Been here several times to purchase books and gifts. Found a really cute weekly calendar today that doubles as a mousepad and has space to write daily agenda plus weekly checklist and notes. Such a fun and practical gift! Each time we've been here it seems they're either understaffed or not enough stockers are cashier trained because it'll be just one cashier until an antsy line queues and then someone notices and comes up to help ring down the line. Good selection of books and games. The front by the cashier also has a fun collection of gift items that change seasonally. There's a cafe in the back but it's usually pretty full so we haven't gone there yet. The store is well organized but maintenance needs to come in to clean the escalator and repaint since it is pretty dirty in some spots which is normal over time but looks like whoever is in charge of regional upkeep maybe hasn't noticed on their visits that this store needs so deep cleaning in some high foot traffic areas. Overall a good albeit pricey place to find your next good read as well as a great place to find gifts for everyone. Cashiers are friendly. Keep up the good work! read more

I didn't even take a picture because I was just in awe. This bookstore is large and gorgeous and clean. I love some big windows in a bookstore, and this place is filled with natural sunlight. They have great big, clearly marked sections. I had never been here before, but 5 minutes of wandering and I knew my way around. Plenty of staff around and they were all super friendly. I came for the hardcover book sale, ended up buying several paperbacks. The store was pretty busy with the sale, but still had no issue getting through there. The only time I saw an employee anything less than incredibly nice and friendly was when they caught some kids playing on the escalator. Then it was a very firm "don't do that." I have missed bookstores. Yes, much of the world surely feels the same after COVID, but there's an even deeper sense of longing for a place that people come together, where community is formed, where knowledge of real facts is recorded and sold, where art is dispersed and revered. Indeed, much of what a bookstore represents is in rare supply these days. Additionally, bookstores are in rare supply and while we have all seen "You've Got Mail" and know the fight that the small and independent bookstores have against the large ladies of book retailing like B&N, I do indeed think to be glad that in the heart of Sugar House we have a bookstore at all. I have had some very fun experiences at this location, and I can think definitively back on 2013 as the time I really started enjoying it here. But most recently, I was simply walking by and noticed something I had not before--there is a window visible from the sidewalk, facing north, and there's a bookcase in that window. They've chosen to highlight Utah-centric books on that case, from driving guides to hiking tomes, and more. And right there at eye level as I walked by on a gloriously warm Spring night, was a camping guide to Utah that for which I have a particular affinity. And that's about my most favorite memory of this Barnes & Noble. All the (admittedly) useful info from my original review still stands, though I haven't been to the coffee shop in over a year. But the coffee shop, the periodicals, the second story, the poetry, the fiction... all of this is still here. It's still standing. read more

This Barnes and Noble is in an awesome location and has plenty of little nooks to study in! The only downfall is NO CHARGING stations in their cafe. Be aware of that if you decide to post up for the night. There are two floors and lots of hidden treasures to browse and find. It's quiet and clean, making it the perfect place to be. It's also located right in Sugarhouse, offering you lots of places to eat or shop within walking distance. The parking lot is always so crowded though, so good luck trying to snag yourself a spot up close! TIPS & TRICKS: * The cafe sells Starbucks coffee and other snacks, but they aren't necessarily Starbucks--so unless they've changed it recently--you can't use your gift cards or get points with them. * If you're sitting in the cafe, steer clear of the doors. People are constantly coming and going and it gets chilly! read more

My niece is into BTS and wanted their CD/Albums for Christmas. We were able to find at least 6 different albums here (Chicago) and brought it home to LA! It was hard to find these since I guess there are more BTS fans in LA? LOL. read more

July 26/24. 12:00pm This is the sugarhouse location in Utah went into the store went to the information desk and there was no one there. so I waited a couple of minutes to see if someone came back to the desk , and nobody did. I thought OK I'll try my luck at the cashiers so I waited patiently in line there was two people ahead of me. Now it's my turn. I asked her if she could look up a book rocks that I was specifically looking for. she proceeded to tell me to go to the information desk and again, I told her that there was nobody there that's why I was standing in line. She then told me that she had other people to help. What horrible customer service and then they wonder why people buy an Amazon . I told her no please just look it up and let me know if it was here in the store and if it's not then I'll just be on my way. To that as a customer that I don't deserve to be helped after I waited patiently . She has no customer service skills whatsoever she proved herself to be an idiot . She could've called someone up to help her cashier while she was helping me that is one solution , or if she could've just made it easy and looked up the book herself and I could've been on my way. this is all about customer service, which she knows nothing about then to have the customer behind me saying that I'm rude after I waited patiently for my turn, I don't know where these children think that they get these their manners from, but obviously they have none. The three stars are for the books and building itself. Great place to get lost in books games and magazines. Add coffee in the same building and it's the always our first stop when coming to SLC for my son and I. Staff....Staff was horrendous when it comes to customer service. If it weren't for the fact that we just drove 7 hours from Denver to go to my sons annual hospital visit, and B&N being the first place he always wants to come to when arriving, I would have left after my first encounter with the young girl with short black hair. I saw her exiting what looked like an office upstairs and said "excuse me, do you work here?" Her reply was "yes but I can't help you, someone over there can." I asked if they had an open bathroom anywhere and her reply was "no they are closed". That was strike two- during a virus you close the area people can walk their hands?! Gross. Next was the extra awful cashier Ron. After typing in my phone number for rewards I told him I had an email that said I have a $5 kids credit and asked him if it showed up on his screen. He put his hands up and said "if you got an email, you need to bring that to me." I turned around to look at my mom to make sure we both heard the same rude tone and response. Her expression was similar to mine...(did he really just say that?!) My mom was in line to buy my son a toy and said if he didn't want the toy so bad she would have walked out. RUDE STAFF, NEVER STOCKED. Disclaimer: Ann, the cashier worker was extremely helpful, kind, and funny! The only good part of my experience, aside from all the books. I came in seeking 1) a copy of a specific book 2) to browse and select a specific genre of book and 3) compare different options in order to select the best one! I came in for the same reason anyone enters a book store. I also asked some questions along the way in order to receive some help from BOOK STORE EMPLOYEES. This, was apparently far too much to expect. Two ladies were wondering around organizing and such. I asked one if they were hiring during the pandemic and what that was looking like for their staff. She assumed I was seeking a job and straight up told me "we have people on furlough so there is no way you'll be hired. Go look at the website." Didn't look at me, didn't stop organizing, just dismissed me. I then was browsing another section and asked "Am I in the right place to find a book on (genre type)". To which a different employee than the first point to the end of the shelf and said it's at that end, not looking up, not moving, nothing. A few minutes later after selecting some options I sat down on the floor in a corner to compare summaries and prices. She waltzes over to me (aggressively I might add) getting far closer than 6ft, thank you, and says "you're not allowed to sit on the floor. You can be touching books unless you have the intention of buying them" I said "oh ok, I definitely need to buy one I was just comparing". To this she says "yeah there's just no sitting, you can't be touching things and there's just no sitting on the floor during the pandemic" and proceeded to stare at me with her arms crossed until I had gotten up and walked away. I just wanted to be in a book store, I had a mask, I was away from people, I had followed all the rules and she couldn't just be nice or an adult when informing me of my mistakes. I grew up going to Barnes and Nobles to hang out. There was one right by the mall of the town I grew up in and it seemed like what everyone would do on the weekends was either hang out at the mall, or hang out at Barnes and Nobles cafe and the bookstore. I didn't mind this as I have always been a huge book worn so even if I am only hanging around books and not reading them, I am still happy because they are close by. This location is huge! Two stories with the cafe on the first floor and lots and lots of books. It is somewhat a part of Sugarhouse Shopping Center and then is also seen if you are going up or down 2100th or 1100th. read more

Clean, nice store, but several issues. 1. Constant music (with words). Can't consider a place to actually sit and read anything. 2. Online says a book is at the store, but no way to look it up once you're there and online won't tell you where it's located. 3. No LGBT section. I get it's Utah, but it's the middle of SLC. There is more space dedicated to children's toys than interesting non-fiction. So as a side note, bring your young child with caution. I gave up. Going home to buy it for my Kindle instead. Or off Amazon. Sorry B&N, but you'll have to do much better. read more

While in a super long line to buy a simple book for my kid some employee comes over to me to harass me about wearing a mask when it was on my wrist WHILE I WAS SIPPING ON A DRINK that I bought in their store!! The Sugar House location is the best Barnes & Noble. With two levels of books, a large coffee shop, and a great location this is the king of big bookstores. While it doesn't have the charm of a local bookshop, you can count on Barnes & Nobles for a HUGE selection of books, music, DVDs, and other items, and at prices that are hard to beat. One issue with this location is the congested parking lot. Because it shares a large parking lot with a least a dozen other businesses sometimes parking is frustrating. But if you can find a spot or if you're on foot, shopping here is great. read more

The sugar and oatmeal raisin cookies the Barnes and Noble Cafe are delicious! Just the right size for an afternoon tea/coffee or evening dessert. Taste is decadent, the sugar cookie just melts in your mouth. Oatmeal raisin has lots of raisins, no scrimping there. And the flat white coffee accented the cookies to perfection. Went in for a date night with my wife- we pick out books the other reads, and then we go out for dinner. Wife is black, I'm white. A clerk felt the need to follow my wife around the store the entire time we were there. She only left her alone when she saw that she was with a white guy. It really upset her, and the morning after, she came up to me crying saying she wish she wasn't black. So, fuck that clerk, fuck B&N, and fuck UT frankly. read more

Watch out for this store's staff, they can be very curt and rude and after speaking with the manager, Dan, I can see where they learned their lack of customer relations . I have a membership with Barnes and Noble as I believe in supporting brick and mortar bookshops, however the cashier made a mistake on my receipt and owed me $8 but was very rude when I asked her to redo it. I get that they are busy but the reality is I was owed money and she hadn't entered my membership number as I had requested. She did ask for my email but apparently that was only to send spam not to apply the discount. When I questioned her she got defensive and I asked to speak to the manager as she was unable to apologize for her mistake, but he didn't apologize either just said ok about 20 times. read more

I always love large, sprawling bookstores. I've literally gotten lost in here before, but I'm not mad! There are plenty of spots to chill out and read. I usually shop at either the Cottonwood Heights or Gateway locations, but I've recently been hanging around Sugarhouse a lot more, and I've grown to really love this location. Usually if Cottonwood doesn't have a particular book I'm looking for, they will have it here. read more

I like small, cozy bookstores with overstuffed chairs and a community atmosphere. So how is it that I LOVE this Barnes and Noble store? It's because even though it is spectacularly big with an amazing array of books and gifts for all occasions. ..it is extremely comfortable and homey. You can browse through the books and gifts and music all day and nobody there is going to hurry you along or force you to buy anything. Besides that, they have a cool little cafe inside that serves Starbucks coffee. But don't try to pay with your Starbucks card or smartphone account. They don't take it. But free WiFi all day more than makes up for any inconvenience. If they had a big screen T.V. for watching sports I might never have to leave. From what I could see the upstairs has the children's books and music sections but I have yet p wander up there yet. read more

One particular staff member condescendingly told me i couldn't sit on the floor while i was sitting and texting ( although that is not posted anywhere so maybe put that up before you start being rude to people ) and took the book i had on the ground next to me. I don't know her name, i couldn't find her but she was operating the customer service desk around 4 on August Tenth wearing a pink tee shirt with glasses. I don't care if you're just trying to do your job, you're in a customer service position. Not the barnes and noble i grew up loving and maybe that's just the pandemic - but this is the first negative experience i've had at B&N in 8 plus years of coming here. I've always treasured the bookstore as a safe haven. If you can walk into a resteraunt and eat with ur mask off, i don't think it's much of an issue to sit on the ground while wearing one. We can spend a lot of time in a book store. A LOT of time. Much like record stores (which coincidentally we can ALSO spend a lot of time in), the places where one can browse rows an rows of books are few and far between. Barnes & Noble still provides us with this glorious opportunity, and I thank them for it. Generally they have some great sale prices on a good range of genres, their classics series are buy 2 get 3 at very reasonable prices, and you can fin a lot of great games, toys, and learning activities for anyone from 0-101. I hope that B&N can continue to have their stores, as aside from the few independents in Utah (which I love more and often) they are the last chain that you can still browse without being in front of a keyboard. Other great things about this location is the proximity to Jamba Juice, Old Navy, and Down East stores in the same complex. read more

Not only is one of the bigger BNs in SLC, but also has a good Stabucks, is always clean and the workers are cool, AND has a bunch of nice stores around to check out. Remember that if you are a BN member, you get 10% discount on your Starbucks. $$$ read more

B & N -you seem to be everywhere! This store has a non-Starbucks Starbucks Cafe. Let me explain: It looks like Starbucks, smells like Starbucks, sells Starbucks accouterments, even says "Starbucks", but is not a company store so they DO NOT honor Starbucks gift cards, the app on your phone where cards are stored...Nope. But, they will honor your B & N gift card. RE: books. I was assisted by a guy named Brad who noted I was searching for a book via the kiosk. The dude walked me right to the book, made comments such as, "I read this book, it was great" and "if you like this genre / writing style, you should try ...." I picked up the two novels I wanted, showed my teacher ID for a 20% perk, and went home to read. Kudos to Brad for being an awesome help. The downside of the visit: the lack of counter checkout help. One girl doing check out. The line was about five people deep. She requested assistance, but no one came while I was there. read more

This is a nice two story location in Sugarhouse along 21st South. They have free Wifi, a Starbucks coffee shop, and a friendly staff. There are plenty of books to choose from although I find prices are better on Amazon and you can usually find what you are looking for at Amazon for less money. If you need a book in a hurry then this is a good destination. This location shares a parking lot with a number of restaurants but that hasn't proven to be a huge deal except during the Christmas shopping season. read more

Customer service just doesn't exist anymore. We walked in to this location trying to buy a Nook. We stood there for 45 minutes asking personnel after personnel for help. Everyone just kept paging everyone else. At one time someone said "I'm helping another customer" who had walked in just two minutes ago (after we had been waiting already for well over 30 minutes) I will never go back. There is literally 1 chair in that store that isn't located in the cafe. It's upstairs, beside an electrical outlet. I needed 1 chair plus an electrical outlet, but the sole chair was occupied. The cafe has plenty of chairs, but it's noisy and there are zero electrical outlets. Zero. Your choice of noise will range from the latte frother to the grinding of the soda/pop machine. Years ago they removed most of the comfy reading chairs that were scattered throughout the store. This was once a relaxing, welcoming retreat for book lovers and people who are looking to get away from the hustle-bustle of the world outside. Not any more. They've turned into the typical "Give us your money and get out" business. As for using the Sprague Library next door, it closes at 6 p.m. on Fridays, and knowing this, I visited B&N at 5:50 PM because I thought I might buy a drink in the cafe, plug in my laptop with the dying battery and relax. I don't ever write reviews, however; this is an exception. I have been a loyal customer to this Barnes and Noble for the last few years. I have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars here, enough coffee to fuel an army, and countless hours reading. That all changed tonight from the way I was treated by staff. As I was charging my computer sitting on the ground in a corner minding my own business, one of the managers told me I was not allowed to sit on the floor. I was unaware of this rule and apologized, I then informed him I would be just 5 more minutes. He crosses his arms and tells me that is unacceptable and I need to leave now or he will be calling security. I tell him I have been a valued customer to this store and him treating me this way would surely lose my business. He looks me dead in the eye and says "that's fine with me, now pack up and get out." There are other Barnes and Nobles or other bookstores to go to, I implore you to broaden your horizons and go elsewhere. read more

Perfect Sugar House location with a tolerant attitude towards studying in the coffee shop with your own books. In fact, I'd wager that most people in this coffee area are not really patrons of B&N. Otherwise, their selection is as good as any other in SLC as far as retail books go. Parking isn't too bad either since it shares a lot with Rubio's and other merchants. read more
