I love book stores & it's a shame that this is the last large book store on the island. It's a great place to hang out, drink coffee and read. They carry most books I've looked for, however when they don't have what you're looking for they can order it and have it shipped to the store if you're willing to pay and wait for your item. My son loves the kid's section, lots of books and toys (both educational and just for fun). Most of the associates I've encountered were friendly and helpful. I wish there were more book stores on the island. There's a membership fee if you'd like a discount, or if you sign up for their free mailing list they will send you coupons every so often. read more

A perfect place to stop to cool off during summer months, or escape the crowds doing shopping season, or grab a hot coffee during winter and browse their selections while Christmas music plays quietly in the background. The kids sections is usually where we end up, I like that there's only one way in and one way out of it, ensuring no little ones escape out of a different opening. The staff isn't that friendly, and the bathrooms are usually pretty dirty whenever I've gone. Their books selection is vast and their "deals" section is just that, a DEAL! 2017.12.03: Perhaps the most frequented place on island my family and I go to. Always a place to go and checkout a book, grab a coffee, chat, and catch Pokémon if you want. But just a bit of advice. If you put a bathroom in a store that depends on folks hanging out longer, you will up your profits. I mean I went to the Macy's one in a pinch and I feel like I might get Zikabola in the Macy's restroom. But it's available, there are only two available in Barnes n Noble. Your restroom foot print is too small to only have two stalls. Just saying. More people drinking coffee and reading a good book to take with them you Med to capitalize on them staying longer. But I'm sure you guys have your reasons. Also I do love the fact schools can come out to earn donations for there school. Great idea. Keep it going. read more

Barnes and Nobles is always such a wondrous place to visit; almost like stepping into the Belle's library in Beauty & the Beast. They keep their books organized and their store clean. I love browsing the tables where they place their featured books; this is usually where I find the books that I buy. I've seen a variety of featured titles, most recently being A Song of Ice and Fire series (the books that the Game of Thrones HBO miniseries is based on). The magazines are always kept with the most up-to-date issue and are kept in good condition (no bent pages). I know I can usually find my husband browsing their car and computer magazine section. Probably the largest selection of magazines I've ever seen in a store. I like the variety of products they offer - they don't just sell books, but also stationary, chocolates, school supplies, games, and toys. Whenever I visit the store, I ALWAYS check out the new Vinyl pop figurines that came in - my most recent find being the Amy Farrah Fowler (from Big Bang Theory) figurine. [Insert high-pitched girly scream] They also have a rewards card that offers members a discount on their products. The only drawback - a $25 annual fee. Not too shabby, considering you can recoup your investment quickly if you shop at B&N often and go to their cafe for a coffee as well. I'm bummed that the Kahala Mall location is closing, but I'm hoping that they keep this location for a long time since it is one of the few (if not last) large bookstores on this island. read more

Went looking for a book for my father recently. The employee at the information desk helped me locate the book I was looking for since it appears they moved things around since the last time I was in there. I'm not sure if it was because the store was crowded but it felt stuffy inside the store. They should have the mall look into servicing the a/c. I am thrilled that there is still a brick and mortar bookstore in business and I do my part to help support them, but if they truly want to stay in business, the employees at this Barnes & Noble at Ala Moana need to get their act together and learn to be polite and respectful to customers. I was looking at a book in an aisle and one of their workers, a short haired older-ish Asian lady, just walks right in front of me. I looked at her, expecting her to say, excuse me, but instead, she grunts at me and gives me a genuinely insolent smirk. Honest. This person continues to mistreat other patrons in the same fashion, yelling at an old guy who took a wrong turn towards the counter cuz he thought it was an exit and shouting at another lady who had left her purse on the ground. Gads, I walked out of that store empty handed and also thinking, good riddance, if it means that that rude SOB woman would be out of a job sooner than later. read more

In a digital world I still like to hold a book and read it. I'm glad that the Ala Moana store is here. I especially like their children's section. I started buying books for my nephew because his parents would read to him as part of their nightly "routine". I now have a grand niece who loves books; so, I buy books for her. read more

This review is for the Starbucks inside the bookstore. Today I was there with my dad and my daughter. My dad picked out some magazines that he was going to purchase, and since he can't stand very long on his feet I told him let's go sit in the cafe while we wait for my daughter to pick out books. As we sat down I proceeded to stand in line at the cafe to buy something to drink, and the cashier came running out from behind the counter and told my dad you can't sit here because you didn't pay for the magazines yet, she told us that unpaid items are not allowed in the cafe, okay I get it so we left and walked around the bookstore some more. I have no problem with the rule of not allowing us to sit in the cafe with unpaid items, and I also understand that this is in part due to the pandemic situation we are in, and they are trying to limit crowds in the cafe. We walked around some more, and found our way to the music and movie section, my dad bought a DVD, and at the same time paid for his magazines. At this point my daughter was still looking around for books, so I told my dad, let's go back to the cafe, since we paid for the magazines it shouldn't be a problem if we sit there and wait. I want to mention again, that I was also planning to purchase something to drink, while we waited. Again we sat down, and again the cashier came running out from behind the counter and chases us away again. I thought to myself what policy are we violating now? When she approached us this time I told her we paid for the magazines, and she said "you have to be eating or drinking something, you can't just plop yourself at the table!" I told her I'm actually going to buy a drink, and she told me "well you have to go through the line first, purchase something, and then sit down!" Again, I totally understand these rules and policies, but it's the way she approached us, and the tone and cadence that she used, it was just so un-friendly. I'm a frequent customer at Barnes and Nobles, and I've eaten and at the cafe many times, and this is the first time I've experienced this kind of service. I actually stood in line to purchase a drink, and as I was waiting my dad told me let's just wait outside, forget about this place. So we ended up waiting outside instead. The cashier really needs some training in customer service, there is a way to say what she said to us without making us feel like we were committing a crime. I actually spoke with one of the Barnes & Noble employees and brought this to their attention, and I was told she's just having a bad morning. Hmm...even after I've been here multiple of times, I think it's been added into one of my favorite stores since today's visit. I've always loved the smell of new books, and in the instant you walk through those doors, the smell automatically puts a smile in my face. I'm not sure why, but it could be because my mom bought tons of books for me when I was a child and I loved to read. And now that I've become a mother, I do the same when wanting to purchase books for my son. And I didn't even know there was a whole area for children! It's like a mini library with so many options! Plus they have toys and baby items that you can find at Nordstrom or Target! I was even suckered in to buying the annual membership for $25. But hey, the 10% benefit for every purchase is something I couldn't pass up. Especially since Christmas is around the corner and I need to stock up on gifts. So worth it! Also, one very unique thing I found is they sell Pokemon cards! I know right! My boyfriend and I were collectors when we were young, and now our addiction is coming back. Even new releases are sold here as well, plus you can get the discount with the membership. DEALS! Lastly, it's just a good place all around. There's a small cafe to buy coffee and just read a book, and there's always something interesting to find. Just like Target, I never leave empty handed...although my wallet is drained because I never know how to stop shopping! read more

Considering this is really the only bookstore in town these days, it's tough to suggest going with different options. Selection is you'd expect from a bookstore, vast and just more than most could ever hope to peruse in a single visit. Prices are a different story and unless you need a book immediately, there are better deals out there. I wouldn't say this store is the type of place where you have a seat and take the time to browse a book or two. Well, you'd be extremely lucky if you manage to find an open chair. Service here isn't bad, some of the cashiers are rather friendly and knowledgeable. Nice to have a chat about a book series with a fellow fan. Those who are stocking seem much less so. Friendly that is. Maybe they are all having a collectively bad day? I would warn anyone trying to use the Barnes & Noble website to check stock. In my own experience, that is very much hit or miss. Best bet? Call ahead or try their in store pick up option. I've had many an experience where the book I wanted was said to be in stock, but no one could find it. read more

I wanted to write this review to make people more aware of what's happened to my boyfriend and I the past two times we've gone into this store. Both times we have visited, within 5 minutes of entering the store we have been approached by men looking to "talk story", however after a while of simple questions like "Where do you work?" and "How long have you been together for?" once we have expressed our discomfort, or most recently, our desire to get back to what we came to this location for (A BOOK) the men have quickly jumped to the, "Well hey I have some mentors," and "Its been nice talking to you, hey lets meet up some time, me, you and my business partners." And hurriedly try to get our phone numbers. This has happened to us too many times and both times in the business section at Ala Moana's B&N. The first time it happened was in May of 2018 and the second time was January of 2019. When approaching a worker to let him know of our discomfort and how upset we were, he made a note to say, "Oh, those guys," before telling us repeatedly that he would go tell his manager (Would he? We never found out). Seriously?! If this has happened to the point where you now refer to this group of people as "those guys" then you ought to be working on something. My SO and I look forward to going into your store and looking through books to read, but instead both times we've never even picked up a book because we've been too quickly approached by weird men trying to get us into whatever they're selling. (Not to mention the women who I've seen do this, too). Until I feel safe coming back here I won't be coming back. read more

Bookstores, a rare thing nowadays. Where there used to be Borders, Waldens, etc, the only one of these huge bookstore chains that still reminds. I often come here whenever I'm in Ala Moana. I mostly just browse around. Gone are the days, where I'd buy a lot of cds or books. It's mostly Amazon and iTunes for my shopping. Can't always drive all the way to Ala Moana so the other 2 options work better for me. I will have to say this location is busy with a a Starbucks inside and free wifi. It's full of book you can browse through and the selection is good. If I did want a book or CD it would be a great place to purchase since I don't have to wait for shipping! I still believe in having a hard copy of a book or cd even though the other 2 options are cheaper and readily available. read more

I was a tourist looking for a quiet place to drink some coffee and read. BN was the perfect respite. It's like home away from home. It's got the same standardized feel as all other BN's with the addition of local Hawaiians. The locals really hang out here. I sat at the cafe next to some ladies who hadn't seen each other for some time. They were catching up on lost time. Behind me was a young man tutoring a kid. To the other side of me was an older gentleman sipping on coffee and quietly playing a video game on his phone. It was cool to get away from the tourist crowds in Waikiki for just a couple of hours. The local feel was icing on the cake. Proper etiquette suggests that you purchase food or a drink if you're going to sit for awhile. One of the workers did go around and offer menus to those folks who hadn't made a purchase. This BN is located on the ground floor of the Ala Moana Center (mall). read more

Me Barnes and Nobles is not the best book store, the parking is nightmarish, they never seem to have what I'm looking for, but tell me they can order it? I can do that, I go there for instant gratification. Yet I love B&N. I love the smell of books, new and old, but the feeling of virgin paper, the crisp never creased page (Rabbit earring pages is disrespectful to the author) makes some purchases worth while. Today, I went in looking for Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury," I have a copy boxed somewhere in my attic, but on a hot day the thought of seeking it didn't seem to be worth the fifteen dollars a new one would cost. Luckily they had it in stock. I pick up a couple of LP's (my new thing!) and payed and went for a latte. Of course, the seating area is packed? So I decided to just snap a yelp pic and bounce. When I popped the top off my grande, I was a little taken aback. Now, I always say "Art is art"... It is a true expression of the artist feeling and environment at the time, and I have been known to "dicker" around in my coffee (pun intended), but never like this. I looked up at the barista but no eye contact could be made. I snapped my pic, covered my joe, and took a sip. Is Michelangelo's "David" art? Is Georgia O'keefe's "Red Canna"? Art...is art, or maybe it was a rorschachean (again, as in my post, I made thaT up!) test. Did I fail? Disclaimer...I did jostle my coffee? So maybe it's just a random act...of the amusing kind. NOTE TO EVERYONE: you are NOT allowed to sit down on the floor to read a book. It's supposedly a rule. I was sitting down, legs crossed (not blocking the aisle or anything) a worker passing by tells me I need to get up. So I ask, "I'm sorry, is it a rule that I'm not allowed to sit down?" And she replies yes. She then proceeds to tell me that even though there's limited seating I could ask someone who's been sitting down for a long time if I could have that seat. Why the heck would I do that? I find this the most bizarre rule and to tell me, a paying customer, to ask another paying customer to get up from their seat is absurd! I wish borders was still open because I would take my business there! read more

I think it's the center of the universe. If you sit in the cafe long enough you might see everyone you've ever met. I like the music, travel, and cooking sections. A former employee told me customers can be a-holes - condescending, impatient, etc. They should really keep in mind that employees can look up their addresses and screw with their lives if they really wanted to. Not that I've ever heard of that happening. I'm told the cafe's sandwiches end up tasting all the same. I personally think it's the processed cheese. read more

I think in my next life I will be a bookstore builder and build Barnes & Nobles all around the world! I love B&N because the books are new, the magazines are crisp and the cheesecake is decadent. They need to build a boy factory like this and all the world's problems will be solved! I could spend an entire day at B&N and never get bored. You can read trashy magazines and gossip about Brangelina, research your next global jaunt to Argentina, plan your wedding to husband number 7 and learn how to flip multi-million dollar houses. All in one place! Simply genius! I'm a sucker for the journals and stationary. I have an entire collection of unused journals that I've never written. i just like the way they smell and look! B&N serves Cheesecake Factory desserts at their cafe which I have a love and hate relationship with. LOVE because I now can eat a giant chocolate cupcake and it will go graciously down into my tummy. HATE because I now can eat a giant chocolate cupcake and it will graciously sit on my okole. Even though they say they have Starbucks coffee I don't think it tastes quite the same. I usually opt for their lemonade iced tea which is sweet and refreshing. They've got FREE Wi-Fi now at B&N which is a huge plus but I really wish they had more outlets so I could plug in my laptop. You have to be really quick to grab a seat at the cafe because it gets fairly busy with people squatting and reading 12 magazines. I love everything about this store but one thing...... JUST LET ME SIT DOWN ON THE FLOOR PLEASE! I always get scolded for laying on the ground on my tummy with my feet kicked up with their entire photography book section scattered around me. Okay not that intense but really? If you're going to scold people for sitting on the floor...maybe you should put more CHAIRS! Couches? Something! I'm sorry your floor is so comfortable! I think I'm gonna bring out my own fold-out chair next time I come here. Anyway, I think the average hours I spend in here is about 3 1/2 hours. I love their huge non-fiction selection along with their gift/stationary section AND their foreign film DVDs. I also love their magazine section...it's my personal heaven. Something about the sound of turning pages that eBooks will never replace for me. Came here looking for a specific book needed for my genealogy, instead of taking my time and looking around I went straight to the nearest employee and asked for help. I normally would look around, but my two kids were sleeping and I did not want to chance them waking up. It was easy to find someone and as soon as I told him the title of the book, he knew where to take me. I was legit amazed... Out of alllll the books in this store, he knew what book I was referring to. I expected him to go to a computer and search for it, but nope. He said follow me, and that we did. He looked for a bit, and said that they usually have that book in stock but we couldn't find it. So he told us he would be right back as he checked the stock. We didn't find the exact book i was looking for, but we did find other volumes of it. He suggested I try the Hawaiian book store Na Mea down the road. I could not believe he knew what book I was looking for. Talk about knowledge! Oh and it helps that there's a coffee stand in here. Was able to grab a coffee for the road home. read more

My daughter and I attend story time on Saturdays. My daughter enjoys it because she gets to meet other kids her age. The story teller always fun and energetic which the kids enjoy. Sometimes my daughter gets up in the middle of story time and wonder around and the story teller does get distracted or annoyed. Though this behavior is expected from the age group. I do wish the event was coordinated better. For instance at the end the story teller would give coupons for lunch (1 per child) but parents would grab more coupons and other parents would be left without. Also, the benches for story time are meant for the kids, but parents would sit on them blocking kids wanting to see the books. I just wish story time had more structure. The store is also toy heaven for my daughter, everything she sees she wants. It is hard to go in sometimes because I have to bribe and make promises to get out of the store without purchasing anything. read more

I'm not going to lie-I used to be an avid Border's patron, so I'm probably a bit biased with my review. However, the reason why I say B&N is A-OK rather than Yay! I'm a fan is because while they do have a better selection of books/magazines than Costco/Target/Wal-Mart, I don't like how the seating is limited to the small cafe section and a few uncomfortable chairs on some random aisles. I know it is a book store, not a library-but lets be real...people mainly go into book stores to (1) read the new magazines or (2) sift through books they're curious about. How could a book store get a 2 out of 5 stars??? Having spent a significant part of my life in NYC and DC there is nothing I enjoy more than spending a Sunday afternoon hanging out in bookstores. I love thumbing through the pages of books and magazines and exploring new genres. I've been known to grab a book or two and sit in the corner or up against a wall as I thumb through those pages (making sure I am out of the way). Often I hang out in book store cafes doing work on my laptop. I can spend all day sitting at Starbucks doing work, reading books and consuming an excessive amount of caffeine and sugar! The more time I spend there the more likely I am to spend money. You would think B&N would want me to hang out there and be comfortable. B&N Ala Moana has taken the joy out of curling up with a good book and hanging out in a cafe doing work. There is not enough sitting area in the cafe, there are no electrical outlets in the cafe and you're not allowed to sit on the floors. Any retail outlet can create a transaction but not any retail outlet can create an experience. I'm never coming back here. If I want to buy a book, I'll buy a soft copy for my Kindle. Books. Books. Books! Walk in and it's set up pretty much exactly like every other B&N anywhere. Pretty good customer service and selection really can't be beat. If it's not in store, look online. Or I guess next best would be amazon. Did you know that you can look online, from the comfort of your own home, before heading to the mall?!? And this handy little button says "Pick Up In Store" and, if your title comes up as available, you can have it help for you and ready to pick up in 1 hour! Made my trip to the bookstore so much quicker this last time, I didn't even get a chance to check-in, I was in and out so fast. LOL The book I had requested for pick up was ready and waiting for me at the checkout counter. Easy Peasy!! I appreciate Starbucks having a cafe though I wish I could use my Starbucks reward card to get my stars. Ah well, at least B&N members can save some loose change on coffee. read more

I love to come here after 9pm, because it feels like a library, except with a new book smell! The aisle are less crowded and the staff is more available to help you. This place has a nice selection of books, toys, stationary and DIY kits! They got everything you can imagine! Planning a wedding? Hit up the magazines for some inspiration! Family potluck? 1000s of great recipes in the cookbook aisle! A little blue? Free therapy in the Self-Improvement section! Because I'm happy! That's what I feel every time I walk into here. The musty smell of books has this nostalgic effect on me. It's like a pile of bricks landing on my head. Or a pile of books. I admit, I'm one of those people that heads directly to comic book section and peruses the titles. Don't sit on the floor when you read though. The staff don't like it for some reason. Probably because they know the unsavory things that have soaked into the carpet and could now be residing on your posterior. Besides books, there's an assortment of odds and ends, like puzzles, toys, and stationary. Basically, stuff that would be good to stuff in a gift bag. If you're a nerd, geek, or dork, all these things would probably interest you. I claim residence for all three states. There's also a coffee shop near the entrance, which I believe serves goodies from the Cheesecake Factory. I try to watch my figure though, so I don't partake. There's only enough room for one spare tire in this trunk. If you're literate, you'll probably enjoy this place. That is all. read more

The cashier was nice but when it came to the pick up area it's another story. I think it's rude to judge in front of the customer on what they order, especially when the customer can hear you. I ordered an espresso and I like mines extra sweet. Yessiree, when I was young there used to be big ol' stores with wooden shelves just filled with books. Real books, ya see? Books made with tree paper with inky words printed on 'em, and to read ya would have to sit under an electric light and flip the pages with your fingers one by one. We would buy these books, sometimes a whole stack if we had the money, and take 'em home and read 'em. Then when we were done a-readin' we would put that book up high on a bookshelf and sometimes we'd read it again later and sometimes it would just be a-sittin' there and its pages would start a-turnin' yellow and it would just be the remmeberin' of a good story. Ya know, when I was young there were bookstores all o'er the place. And then times started a-changin' and these bookstores? They started disappearin' one by one until an old place called Barnes and Noble was one of the last ones standin'. It was a nice place to be, big, clean, had plenty o' books and a little bathroom and even a cafe with a big ol' glass case full of small frosted cakes and cookies big as your hand and slices o' thick cheesecake with cream on top. If ya wanted to, ya could hang out in the bookstore all day long! My favorite section had a bunch o' books for discount prices. Ya could buy big books, same as the ones sittin' on the regular shelves in the store and then some special ones that weren't nowhere else, and they would be right cheap they were. Kits about jugglin' and colorin' books for the grown folk and heavy hardcover mysteries that could keep ya up at night. Oh and your momma? She would always drag ol' granny over to the toys and I'd watch her go from shelf to shelf pokin' this and proddin' that and touchin' all the colorful boxes with that little gleam o' want in her eye. We'd never buy nothin', though, cause the prices were sky high but they were still fun to look at. Your ol' granny even worked at a bookstore called Waldenbooks for a bit right outta school. When we were there we had to smile and go up and down the aisles askin' folks if they needed us to find 'em a special title or suggest a good read and we even knew all the shelves by heart! That was back when bookstores were a big thing, though. It didn't stay like that. By the time Barnes and Noble was the last big bookstore, the workers there? They didn't seem to know much at all. They didn't smile or say hello or pay much attention to the folks trying' to buy books, but I suppose it was cause they could feel the end a-comin'. It was too bad though, they really stopped carin' and maybe if they had just been a little more kindly, maybe that Barnes and Noble could've been around long enough for even ya to see it. Anyways. I admit it. I love what used bookstores stand for and I love to support local businesses and all, but sometimes you just know what you want and you know the big, bad chain store is gonna have it. And they are gonna have it with Starbucks...and with a plethora of brand new, shiny, great-smelling books to browse through...and with a huge magazine stand. I could spend the entire day here just sifting through all of the books in all the different categories. I love the magazine stand, although I think they could afford to make it bigger! I've seen more options. Yeah, the prices suck and the only thing on the bargain racks are books that were specifically made to go to the bargain rack, but if you can't find what you want (which is rare), they will order it and it will be there in a few days. Win-win. My hugest gripe, however, is that they won't just let you sit on the floor. One of the greatest joys of a bookstore is sitting and perusing through your preliminary findings and sorting the ones you will buy and the ones going back on the rack, but they just won't have it. They come and tell you to get up. Which I suppose would be okay if they had anywhere to sit...but they don't. There's a few small tables in starbucks. That's it. BOO, Barnes and Noble. :/ However I may gripe about prices and the like, though...I always get super excited to come here and spend hours, so I must digress that I am a huge fan. read more

Wow, super friendly and efficient staff here. I was really impressed as it's a busy store. Went to the coffee shop, too, fast service through a long line. Consistently crowded, so if you want to work it might be hard to find a spot. read more
