We accidentally discovered this gem when we were looking for a safe place to dine. It seems that Leduc isn't really concerned with safety. Barney's has an outdoor patio completely glassed in with lots of plants and greenery to look at. Located in the Best Western Plus, it offers fine dining at reasonable prices. The staff really made our day. They were struggling with a rush on Father's day, but really made up for it. The steaks are excellent. I had the best chicken Caesar salad in the world. I've actually been around the world, so I can speak with some authority. The only problem was the side dish of grilled corn on the cob was ice cold. They replaced it, but it still wasn't coming out hot. Oh well, corn isn't that good for you anyway, right? The fries were awesome. The wine list was decent. I'd consider coming back here again if I'm driving the QE 2 and feeling a bit peckish. read more

I have to admit, when I first heard about Barney's and that VUE Weekly voted them #1 Worth the Trip: Leduc 2018... I was skeptical. How good could a small town pub really be? Leduc is a small city to the south of Edmonton and it's pretty much a suburb at this point. Is the food there actually good? I was more than willing to give Leduc a fair chance to show me what they're doing that's delicious. I visited on a Saturday evening and upon pulling into a parking lot, noted that the pub is attached to a Best Western hotel. This is the kind of place that definitely has VLTs on the premises. But again, keeping an open mind, I entered the large pub-style restaurant. The space is huge with a massive bar right in the center of the room. The decor definitely screams "bar" but it isn't terrible. There's a lot of dark wood, rock finishes, and some funky booths wrapped in vinyl. In terms of a pub, it's pretty much exactly what you might expect. It's certainly far from a hole-in-the-wall but at the same time I still found myself questioning how good the food could possibly be. Our server was extremely friendly and very attentive. I never felt "forgotten about" at any point in our visit and everything was quite prompt. Once seated, I was first met with an extensive liquor menu. They offer something pretty neat at Barney's called "Pour Your Own Beer" where they have an entire wall full of Alberta craft beer taps and you can select and pour whatever you want - self-serve. A very unique and interactive idea! This isn't the kind of place that makes fun cocktails (they do caesars on Sundays) or anything of the like. I wasn't much in the mood for alcohol (which felt somewhat wrong) and decided to forgo the booze entirely and move straight to the eating. Barney's does pride themselves on offering locally sourced food, something that I can always appreciate. The menu is fairly simple, featuring many of the pub staples that you would expect. They have daily special features and boast that just about everything is homemade from scratch. I was starting to understand what might be good about this place. I certainly have NO problem with pub-style food and was so curious to discover what this restaurant is dishing out. There's a pretty wide appetizer section in the menu - because that's often what you do at a pub! You grab a couple of apps and everyone shares stuff. Well Barney's has just the thing: the H-Appy Platter (Ribs, wings, nachos, deep fried pickles, parm fries - $35.00). I couldn't say no! This thing is filled with all of their best-sounding items! I was slightly shocked when this massive iron tray arrived at our table like a giant feeding tough. What had we done?! On the other hand, I was starving and this all looked exactly like what I wanted to shove into my face. Starting with the Dry Rib Fingers, my expectations were extremely low. I don't think that I've ever had a good dry rib. They're always shriveled and dry to the point of being unpleasant. Well Barney's sure showed me! These dry ribs were nothing like that. They were juicy, meaty, and fall-off-the-bone tender. I liked that they were salted to bring out the flavour. These things were miles ahead of my perception of dry ribs. For the Chicken Wings we were able to choose our flavour from a wide selection. There were four dry rub choices and eight wing sauce choices. Many sounded great, especially the hot + ranch which is right up my alley. But on this visit I went with the Maple Bacon dry rub because it sounded the most interesting. The server exclaimed that it's their most delicious flavour. And wouldn't you know it, the wings were some of the best that I've had in a long time. So crispy and perfect on the outside, so juicy on the inside. The flavour of maple bacon truly came through and shined, adding a complete new dimension that I never would have expected from the humble chicken wing. Then, Barney's Nachos - of which there is no further explanation... Until you see them. These aren't your typical nachos and there are no tortilla chips in sight. The chips used for these nachos are potato chips and I felt joyful over this revelation. Smothered in a hefty amount of marble cheese and topped with diced tomato, there wasn't much to these "nachos" yet somehow they were just right. I'm never upset to see Deep Fried Pickles and these ones were fried to a crunchy perfection, encasing a juicy pickle spear on the inside. Lastly, the Parmesan Fries, which were a huge pile of perfectly golden, crispy fries topped with parmesan cheese and chipotle mayo. Loved these! They were super flavourful and very addictive! On top of this, the whole platter came with a side of five different homemade dips; Salsa, Sour Cream, Ranch, BBQ Sauce, and Chipotle Mayo. These were excellent accompaniments to everything on the platter and they just made sense with the food items. I had an unfavorable experience when eating here. We were a larger group (group of 8) and our waitress had just started working there. In my opinion she shouldn't have been given a large group without having assistance. Most of our food orders were incorrect altogether or mixed up. One of our meals did not come out at all and came out when we all were finished eating. The manager was very apologetic and did offer us dessert on the house for all the mix ups that occurred. The best part of Barneys I would say was the beer and wine Wall. Visiting from the states, this was my first experience serving my own wine this way. Always had decent food here and the beer wall is pretty neat as it allows samples or full pints of beer. Pay for what you pour! I had the burger and rosemary parm fries this time, the fries are really good with their aioli sauce. Burger was a bit greasy, not quite sure why, cooked on flat top that was a bit greasy perhaps? Had a decent steak sandwich here for lunch a couple weeks ago. The only thing was it had too many extras & was a bit small. Avocado, tomato relish of some sort, sometimes it's best not to mess with a good thing. Service was fine but the server seemed to be off in her own world a bit. Not a bad place for lunch. For a gastro-pub, Barney's is indeed a hidden gem! This is the second Barney's, the flagship is located in Wetaskiwin . The decor is funky and different. There is a lot of what looks like reclaimed wood, and glitter vinyl covering the booth seats. There is a featured, long booth on the back wall that looks like something out of a malt shop in the 50s. They have a room for meetings or group gatherings that can be provided. There is also a games room. Firstly what makes Barney's different is the "Pour My Beer" wall. It features Alberta craft beers that you can try in any amount you want. You get a card loaded with 32 oz. The digital display almost reads like a gas pump, it will tell you the dollar amount as you pour. When you have reached your 32oz, the AGLC requires that you check in with your server to ensure that you haven't had "too much". If you are good to go, you can get another 32 oz put on to your card. As if the beer wall isn't cool enough, the food is AMAZING! Where has Chef Chris Hickman been hiding all of my life? Ingredients are sourced locally as much as possible. I was impressed that my two favourite dishes from the evening were (mostly) meatless! The "must trys" are the Barney's Sweet Potato Fries and the baked brie. The baked brie is wrapped in phyllo pastry and finished with caramelized pecans. It was the perfect balance of gooey and sweet. The sweet potato fries were fried perfectly and then topped with pork belly bacon bits, Parmesan and garlic aioli. This is one of those gastro-pubs that I cannot wait to visit again. read more

We ended up giving this place a second shot and while it was better it wasn't anything incredible. We ended up going with the bruschetta which was actually quite good but the service both times were just so "meh" that I couldn't give it any better rating. We love good service and good food. It makes our time out so much more worth it and awesome. The waitress came back three time's not knowing what they had for beer, if they were all sold out, and what was on feature. Then when the bruschetta did arrive we had no napkins, plates, or cutlery so we had to find someone so we could start enjoying the food. The absolute BEST service I've ever had at a restaurant. Waited to get a drink order. Table that was seated after us was getting food/drink orders already and no eye contact from our sever the next table over. Shelby cam over, noticed I went from super happy to hungry and not happy anymore. Said she would take care of us. Expedited our drinks, took excellent care of us. This woman, she's a saint. We watched her work her ass off and be super attentive to us, not her table. She's a gem. And now we have a new place to go. read more

I like this place. I've been a few times and all in all the service and the food has been good. The beer wall is really cool and unique. I've had a few things off the menu and really like the grilled Caesar salad - although the last time it needed more dressing. The Bruschetta was really good the last time I was there and my friends and family have all enjoyed the food - except weirdly they don't have jalapeño peppers for the nachos . I was so excited about trying "a hidden gem" as I have heard nothing but foot things about this place.... BUT was so disappointed. The atmosphere and interior were inviting and very cool, but the food and drink were sadly lacking. Our waitress was young, and very loud and obnoxious. I would think that a place trying to be hip and cool, would consider more classy and considerate staff to represent them. As for the food, I ordered the chicken tenders and fries.. the chicken was dry and greasy, and the fries were soggy and wet - great combination! Yuck! I ordered a blueberry mojito, based on recommendation, and it was tasteless and the mint was brown and bitter. My husband ordered the special pasta and it was ok, but the portion was extremely small, leaving him hungry and wondering where the rest of the meal was. Would I go back, perhaps to try their good selection of craft beer on their beer wall, but would have to have a good reason. Why is it hard to find GOOD hidden gems in our small towns? We were looking for a patio for after work drinks and snacks and settled on Barney's since none of us had been there before. The renovations are simply beautiful. Gorgeous stone work and stained glass made up the decor. The bar in the middle of the room with a stone counter encircling it gave the pub a group atmosphere - very good for large groups. it had a cool vibe and their show piece beer wall was amazing! It's a self serve concept and there were so many beers on tap! Out of all the one I sampled, I found all of them delicious! Moving onto the patio we sampled several of their appetizers including the maple bacon wings and the sweet potato fries that came with bacon bits, Parmesan cheese and chipotle aoli drizzle. I am so excited for bacon anything! The food was fantastic and the drinks were cold, delicious and self serve! Definitely not disappointed! I will wait for renos to be done outside before sitting on the patio though. read more
