When we walked in we were told to sit anyplace. We waited a bit before a server came over and asked about drinks. We said we were ready to order. There seem to only be two front house staff working the bar and the tables. My husband had a beer and a French Dip sandwich. The sandwich was very good. He paid an additional $3 for onion rings. Not worth the additional money. I had an ice tea and a Turkey Ruben with potato salad. The tea and potato salad were very good.The Ruben was just ok. The meat was good but other than that it was very plain. The bread was barely toasted. My pet peeve is that they serve you your food and then bring you your napkin and silverware. I watched the severs do this at the four other tables that ordered during our meal. I HATE this! I want to start eating when my food is served. Overall the place was nice. Went into Baron's tonight for a Guinness, the bartender proceeded to straight pour with out resting. I asked her to let it rest and breathe as it should be poured and she told me it's a slow tap and she doesn't need to. Poured the rest of the beer. I tried it and it was flat and gassy. I left it there without another sip taken and told her to tap me out as I would never stiff a tab, even though I should have refused to pay. She saw I was clearly unhappy and I didn't drink the beer, and offered nothing but glares. I would recommend steering away from here, they have poor service and at least one bartender that clearly doesn't know her job. read more

Been going to Baron's since the 90's. They used to be great. Now... Today, they answered the phone, yelled something, then immediately hung up. So I drove to down there, in the snow, for Restaurant Week. The bartender and waitress both told me it ended on Friday Jan 30th. According to everything I've seen, and every other restaurant participating, it ends on the 31st. We were over on Portsmouth over the weekend and we decided to have lunch at Barton's Pub & Restaurant. They are conveniently located at 500 High Street in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. Barron's Pub has been around for many years, but this was my first visit. On select occasions they offer live music from some of the local talent in the area. When we arrived they were not busy and we were able to score 2 seats at the bar, our favorite perch. The bartender was handling the group seated at the bar efficiently. Our drink order came out quickly. My Wife really enjoyed her Old Fashioned. They have a decent menu with a good variety of options. My Wife had the French Dip Sandwich served with Hand Cut French Fries. She enjoyed it very much. The Roast Beef was tender and delicious. The Fries were crispy outside but meaty on the inside, a wonderful combination when you can find it. I had a Grilled Pastrami Reuben and I really enjoyed it. It was both hot and delicious. I was very surprised to find a bottle of 12 Year Old Pappy Van Winkle on the shelf. This is my Unicorn, even though I don't drink anymore. I asked how much for a pour and I was pleasantly surprised. My Wife wanted to try it so she asked for a pour. They were kind enough to let her take a picture with the bottle. I'm not sure what the rules are, so I will not reveal the price here. We really enjoyed our first visit to Barron's Pub and we are already looking forward to our next visit. read more

Nice ambiance! Staff is friendly. It's definitely a regulars/locals hangout place. There are some games in the corner of the pub. Looked popular! We got the Paloma drinks. The drinks were okay, tasted more like plain margaritas. Will come back to try more of the food. The fries were decent , we only got the Barons fries appetizer. The menu looked great, lots of options . I think if you're looking for a divey and local hangout this is the place. People and staff were chatty and friendly, so it was a nice social atmosphere. I visited here on a rainy Saturday night for an event with the Portsmouth Humane society. There were several other locations involved along High St, but it started here at Baron's where their porch and 2 inside tables were taken over. So props to Baron's for supporting the pets in need and hosting! The only reason I docked a star here was the heat was on way too high. Everyone was hot. Otherwise this was a well managed, busy bar in the early evening on a weekend night. The staff were kind and my drink was awesome! They have awesome happy hour pricing, I literally did a double take when I got my bill. They have some of the best chicken tenders I have had in a while. With a rich batter that's tasty and not all crunch. It was easily 2 portions of chicken! Fries were awesome and sauces a-ok. The atmosphere was a lively fun one. And the waitresses were pleasant. At lunch, the crowd seemed very much like shipyarders (loud and energetic). Ordered the she crab soup. It came with a generous sprinkling of crab meat. The taste of the soup base was relatively plain, but the contrast with the delicious crab bits was perfect. this review is for the Barons Pub from Bide-A-Wee golf course. They catered my son and his fiancés rehearsal dinner and it was fantastic. The entree choices were Ribeye Steak or Fried Chicken and everyone complimented on how great their meal was. The steaks were cooked to perfection. We came to Barons for lunch, frankly, because the pizzeria across the street was closed for lunch. I knew that Barons had a good pizza menu and I was very disappointed to learn that the only pizzas they were offering at that time were cheese or pepperoni although the menu listed nearly a dozen custom options. We ordered burgers instead. We were delighted that it was "burger day" and the burgers were offered at a really good discount! They were large half-pound burgers with all the trimmings. I wasn't as happy with my black and blue burger because the Bleu cheese wasn't very good and the cajun seasoning did not come thru as strongly as I expected. I honestly can't say that I ever noticed this place before since it has a dark exterior and you cant see into the windows. Nonetheless I saw an open sign so I ventured in. There were approximately 6 people in there so not crowded but surprisingly not empty. Service was so-so. Not the warmest vibe but its a dive bar environment so I didn't expect too much. After a longer than average wait the food came. The 4 star review is based on the burger. It's probably one of the best burgers that I've had. Cooked perfectly and seasoned well. I recently rented out the private room at Barons for my son's rehearsal dinner. We had 30 people and the room rental came with a private bartender. I really can't rave about the experience enough! The whole thing went off without a hitch. The service was beyond wonderful. I hosted an open bar and open ordering from the menu. The food came out in a timely fashion and the drinks were flowing. The space itself is a speakeasy vibe and had a secret door that attached to the restaurant. It was completely private and large enough to probably accommodate at least 50. Our bartender Heather was a dream. She coordinated just about everything throughout the night and even helped me decorate. The food varies from pub fare to steak. Everything was hot & delicious. The appetizer trays I ordered ahead of time were ready right on time as people were coming in. I cannot recommend this place enough for any special occasions event. I checked out many places before I found Barons and I'm so happy I found them. Just to give you an idea of how reasonable they are, I did an open bar, open menu ordering and appetizer platters for 30 people. The tab with generous tips? $1,000. We are here 3 days in a row, it was so good. Two great, amazing waitresses, one was Shelby and the other two names we didn't get. One server was the opposite of the first two. The food is really good, and is only surpassed by the service of the two bartenders Shelby and Savannah. They are loads of fun to hang out with while you're enjoying your lunch at the bar. Stopped in to Baron's after a 5 hour drive down for our stay in Portsmouth. So glad we stopped here! The food was amazing, service was quick, and everything was fair-priced! We were in and out in 35 minutes. My husband got a burger and I got a Reuben sandwich and we would recommend both. The fries were great, as well. Very challening to find a good place for dinner on a Saturday evening. Maybe because we didn't have reservations and the Avett Brothers were playing at NTellos pavilion. This place had decent reviews and it turned out to be a very good choice for our group of five. I had the blackened scallops. Most everyone else either had the Ruben or the Baron Burger. I dined here in November and overall had a great experience. My only disappointment was my food order. I arrived about 6pm and happy hour was going on...oh yeah!!! Well drinks and drafts were at a good price and all appetizers were half off. I originally ordered the nachos and had a few special requests (minus xyz). So my order arrives and "xyz" are all over my nachos. I was so grossed out. The waitress (Kara) realized the order was wrong as she placed it front of me. As a result, no way was I going to eat them. I was all excited too...but oh well. I then ordered the spring rolls and blackened shrimp. While the spring rolls looked yummy they were super greasy. Me being super hungry, I ate them anyway and later on that night, they were not agreeing with my stomach :( Now the blackened shrimp, I did enjoy them. A friend of mine needed cocktail sauce to give them a little more kick. But I was pleased with them as is. While the food wasn't spectacular, I enoyed the atmosphere and our waitress was a pleasure. Kara was pleasant and very personable when it came to ordering and recommendations. She just seems like a sweet young lady :) The place was packed. The bar area...standing room only. When I walked in there was one table left...had my name on it :) I would recommend you visit here...it wasn't at all bad, I just had a few upsets but that comes with trying out something new. This is a very pleasant old town Portsmouth pub. Two girls working the entire place had things under control. Service was definitely a five star plus. The food however was average. It was not bad, I got poppers and a club sandwich. It was plain, uninspiring with fries that were limp noddles. I am still giving it a four because it was fast and affordable. Not a bad place for a quick lunch. I imagine the dinner menu would be much better and I plan to find out. read more

I went there for the first time on a Friday night, with an open mind. The young lady behind the bar had a horrible attitude (she had blonde hair & a pound of mascara on her eyelashes). She was very rude & impolite. I had plans on having dinner there but that quickly changed. In between serving drinks (if she was actually paying attention), she was aggressively texting away on her phone. Not sure if she was fighting with her significant other or what not, but that's not a valid excuse. Then, she starts arguing with a co-worker from the kitchen in front of the whole bar. Needless to say, I felt very uncomfortable & left. The second time I went there was on a NFL Sunday evening around 8pm. I was glad mascara girl wasn't there. The two staff members were sitting down to the left side of the bar, chit chatting away. Every so often, they would walk behind the bar. Not impressed by this place at all. Seems like there's a lack of management & supervision in this place. If you're stationed here for the Navy, they don't care, even though they try to use that theme in the bar. Came in for lunch on a weekday, all tables were full inside, so we sat in the outdoor seating. My wife and I opted for a quick lunch today, so we both opted for a Baron's Burger. Food was all right (pictured), We ordered our usual preparation: "Medium" and "Medium Well".. Both of them came out well done and a bit on the dry side. Still good, just a little dry... Service did 'remember' we were in the outdoor area and checked on us often, but nearly an hour passed from the time we entered the place to when we got our food. ---In summary, Barons seems like a good place to go to if hanging out with friends, and having a few beers. A great pub if you are going with the intent of hanging out for awhile. They can get pretty lively with all the local music acts. I know the service industry folks love to come relax her after their shifts. The last 3-4 meals here have been quite good as well. These range from Italian subs (surprised me too!) to tuna stk salads. Average service, average food. Burgers are likely the best on the menu but I was excited to have happened upon it on 70 cent fried oyster night. The oysters were good but its hard to mess up fried oysters. I did get some of their french onion soup that was definitely sub-par. They throw in a couple salad croutons for the bread and the cheese is very cheap and tastes like a string cheese stick. Difficult to eat and not very good. Atmosphere... its a pub so it's exactly what it sounds like. I went with friends on a Wednesday night and there were some drunk folks who should have been cut off a few beers ago.
