This charming bistro that you would find in Spain or Portugal is exceptional. The quaint vibe and decor takes you across the pond; like a trip over there. The seafood is so fresh and delicious..as if they just brought it from the boat. I had tuna carpaccio and an espresso! I would order both again and am looking forward to sharing our dinner courses very soon! Mario is the server, bartender who was so charming and friendly! He knows the menu and is happy to help you decide! Ciao for now!

We found this little gem in Gaslamp, San Diego. Had 5:00 dinner reservations and glad we did. It filled up fast! This is a cozy little Spanish Tapas restaurant with a really authentic decor and vibe. Our server Germain was enthusiastic about the wine menu, so we ordered a glass of BTG Malcorta, which is a Spanish white wine and was perfectly paired for the tuna carpaccio, octopus and sardine plates we ordered. This was a really good experience and cant wait to come back!

I was in search of a restaurant near the new coffee shop that I went to and found this restaurant. Me and my friend went early enough that reservations were not needed. Although we were seated right away, it took a long time for us to get attended to. Sadly , this was the theme of the service throughout the entire night. Slow. I did like the intimate and quiet setting because it allowed us to talk to each other without talking over each other. For wine, I got a refreshing white wine. For tapas we got - Tuna Tasting - I can barely taste the tuna due to the other ingredients on the skewer. This was overpriced in my opinion. Pintxo de Chorizo - This was actually my favorite! The creamy aioli and the savory chorizo was a match made in heaven! Wagyu Beef Cheek - This reminded me of short rib to be honest. It was tender and I did like potato puree that came with it. Mushrooms - Breaking the yolk on this dish was so much fun! Definitely added that creaminess to the dish. This experience was a 3.5 for me. Although there are some items I liked, the slow service brought down my overall experience.

Writing about the happy hour since I don't see much information about it yet - it's Wednesday to Friday, 4-6pm. I stopped in at 4pm on a Friday and it was nice and empty. We sat at the bar with no reservation, and service was great. The food is tapas style, so think small bites, but high quality. This is one of the few places in SD that does a Spanish tortilla (tortilla de patatas) and it was perfectly custardy soft in the center. Romantic and cute inside, good for a date night. Prices are steep for tiny pours and portions so more of a splurge.

Barra Oliba ---"Olive Stick" in Basque--is a cozy little venue on Kettner Boulevard, in the Little Italy section of San Diego. Kettner Boulevard is blessedly quieter than nearby India Street, so it might be a touch easier to snag a coveted parking space. The wine list is quite comprehensive. In particular, there is a large selection of Spanish wines available, which, of course, would be expected in a Tapas-style restaurant. The restaurant is just now celebrating its one year anniversary. I originally visited the restaurant when it first opened--I think I heard about it on Yelp--and I just visited a second time on a recent Friday evening. One side of the small dining room is lined in red upholstered banquettes. There is a bar opposite, where some people choose to dine. Ernesto and Eduardo are gracious and welcoming hosts.

I first went here in January when they had only been open for a few months. It was amazing. Me and my friend sat at the bar. Our server Matt took great care of us. We had some of the best pork chop in San Diego. The tapas were delicious but it can get expensive since tapas are meant to be small portions. Next time I went was in May for my birthday and I was sadly disappointed. The pork chop didn't taste as good as it used to and they got rid of some of the menu items. I really wanted to try the Wagyu beef cheek but they got rid of it. I got to sample the other dishes since my friends ordered them and it wasn't something rave worthy. The restaurant is small and has an intimate setting perfect for dates. Dim lighting. The bar was nice if you want to socialize. Parking is horrible. As it's only street parking in little Italy. Would I go back? Probably not since they cut their menu even more now that they've been open for a little over a year. Maybe if I'm in the area and just wanted tapas and wine.

We had a reservations for a girls dinner on a Friday night at 7. Since it's tapas, my girl took the liberty of basically ordering the entire menu and a few bottles of wine. The service was great, our server Mario (who I only remember because my friend's name is Maria and she pointed that out!) recommended that one person ordered everything so the kitchen can flow the food out in a timely flow. We loved this! Brilliant amazing dishes left and right. The table agreed the steak was the star of the show along with the oysters, marinated tomatoes. I don't drink so I ordered a couple americanos. Would recommend, my friends are in a group text saying they would go back for the steak alone! Also get the "hot sauce"

Spain has arrived in Little Italy. :) What a cool vibe addition to Little Italy. I think the best word to describe Barra is serious. They are serious about the ingredients and preparation. This was the perfect place for my anniversary weekend. Shout out to Matt our guide this evening who took such great care. The food! Wow! This is upscale tapas and the flavors were unexpected. Example, we had the black rice q dry aged seared stripped sea bass. The rice is black using squid ink and then seasoned in a way that by itself is a flavor bomb. The sea bass was crispy skinned but still delicate. They have a delish anchovies toast that has such great flavor. Matt will help not only w the food but there is a ton of great wine.

You guys did it again, Barra Oliba! This place never disappoints. The dishes were bold, creative, and packed with flavor !! truly a fun experience for the taste buds. I couldn't try everything in one visit, but that just gives me the perfect excuse to come back soon and explore more of your incredible menu. Cheers, and Happy New Year!

The sea bass was fantastic. The presentation of the dishes were creative and all were quite good. The ambiance of the restaurant is very coozy and comforting. And the service was attentive and good.

From the perfectly curated playlist to the wine list, this place is a hit. You can taste the quality in every bite. I can't recommend this place enough! It feels like a taste of Europe dropped into San Diego. We went opening weekend and they were running like a well oiled machine. Everyone was so pleasant, the staff was so knowledgeable and they all had such great recommendations! The Pan Tumaca is so rich with flavor, I could eat it every single day, with or without the ibérico! I haven't had many items on their menu but I'm excited to try more.

Extremely expensive if you are going for drinks and tapas, but still the best service, quality of food, and atmosphere for this type of experience. Very nice decor. For drinks, food, and dessert, count at least $100 per person at this place. For example, our bill included a $5 charge for 3 small pieces of bread; they'll charge you for every taste and it adds up quickly as their tapas are very small (but good). Do not go here very hungry. It is a great (but very expensive) experience I definitely recommend.

An absolute standout, unforgettable dining experience. San Diego has had its share of Spanish tapas places that just don't quite get it right, until now. Barra Oliba opened just 5 weeks ago, but they've already nailed the ambiance, food and service. We grabbed a seat at the bar- which is honestly the best place to be, largely in part to the awesome bartender, Matt. Everyone seemed to know his name. No surprise given his friendly personality and overall good vibes! They have a great wine list of Spanish wines and even carry Estrella on tap. I didn't see it on the menu, but also saw some folks drinking a sangria! The food is incredible and reminds me of tapeando in Madrid. We started with the aceitunas, cheese board and jamón ibérico. The jamón was melt in your mouth and we could've honestly done this round three times over with just how good it was!! We then moved on to patatas bravas, croquetas and tortilla española. All were an elevated take on the classics that maintained the goodness of the originals while adding such a delicious, complex layer of flavor! We were so full that we couldn't go for dessert but we're definitely eye-ing that homemade basque cheesecake next. This place is next level. Food quality, so good. Service, outstanding. And vibes, absolutely immaculate. Such a perfect date night spot and lovely intimate, yet lively atmosphere! We can't wait to come back.

I made a reservation (just in case) because on a weekend you never know. Luckily, though, we arrived and there was plenty of available seating. Our daughter, who loves a good steak at 5 years old, enjoyed their pub steak and fries and shared a Mexican Coke with her brother. This place exceeded every one of them. Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, Wolf in the Woods feels like a hidden European café you'd stumble upon while traveling. Sitting outside beneath the umbrellas with a cocktail, watching the neighborhood stroll by. It felt like a little corner cafe in Paris. Then the food arrived. Every plate was beautifully presented, but the real magic was in the creativity of the flavors. The combinations were unexpected, yet every one worked. Every dish had me wondering how on earth someone came up with these pairings in the first place. The Sweet Corn & Piñon Soup deserves a standing ovation. We literally stopped talking after the first spoonful. Rich, savory, slightly sweet, comforting and completely unexpected all at the same time. Both of our eyes rolled back in our heads. The Beef Tataki completely surprised me. The outside had a delicate seared crust, the inside cut like butter, and the citrus pairing made me rethink what flavors belong together. And the mushroom and polenta dish? The mushrooms had an incredible texture--like savory little pieces of mushroom jerky. I would have happily bought a pound of them just to snack on. Every dish felt like it was taking me somewhere I'd never been before, yet somehow felt familiar at the same time. Wolf in the Woods creates an unforgettable experience.

As a Colombian who has been craving authentic Colombian cuisine since my last visit to New York in…read moreDecember, I can confidently say this restaurant truly satisfied those cravings. Being nearly eight months pregnant, my expectations were especially high, and it is rare to find a place that meets them so well. From the seasoning of the food to the warm and attentive service, everything about this restaurant stands out. Although I don't recall my server's name, he was incredibly kind and provided excellent service throughout. The ambiance is also worth noting--the space is large, offers plenty of seating options, and even features a large TV, making it a great spot to relax or watch sports. To start, I ordered a watered mango juice along with a beef empanada. The empanada exceeded my expectations--despite being on the smaller side, it was packed with flavor. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered five more to go, which speaks for itself. They were served with fresh ají, a traditional sauce that complemented them perfectly. For my main course, I had the carne asada plate, which included steak, rice, beans, sweet plantains, avocado, tomato slices, and a small arepa. Every component of the dish was well-executed--the beans were flavorful, the meat was well-seasoned, and the overall plate felt authentic. It is often difficult to find truly authentic Colombian food, especially in San Diego, where options are limited or not genuinely Colombian. This restaurant, however, delivers on authenticity and flavor. The portion size was generous, and I ended up taking leftovers home to enjoy later. In addition to the empanadas (two chicken and three beef), I also ordered a buñuelo and a cheese arepa to go. Unfortunately, these items did not meet the same standard. The arepa lacked flavor and was overly greasy, and the buñuelo was dry and similarly oily, even after absorbing excess grease from the bag. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Colombian food, especially given how rare it is to find quality options in this area. Friends of mine visited recently as well and thoroughly enjoyed their bandeja paisa, further confirming the consistency of the food. I will definitely be returning--especially for those empanadas.

Our server was perfect, explaining a few things on the menu, encouraging us to order our main course as they take about 45 min to create. So, ordered the Paella de Pollo to share. Then, we perused the drink menu! What a selection! We were feeling the need for some bourbon, tried the peach Ol' Fashioned. Concerned that such fruity concoctions can occasionally overwhelm the spirit, we were presented with a good looking, clear cubed lowball with a skewered marinated cherry along with a tiny cube of peach. It tasted delicious. CTZN has a mixologist Extradinaire at the helm! By this time, our 1st tapa was presented, Croquetas de Torrezno. Delicate & flavorful, smoked pork belly atop black garlic aioli, apricot jam & Ice wine vinegar. Delicious! Then we were presented with our Potatas Brava, 4 servings of delicately sliced potato dauphine with Bravas sauce & garlic aioli. So many flavors to these perfectly cooked slices. I'd wanted to try another drink & read the Paper Airplane was there. A delicate fruity/frothy mixture that my wife would've loved, but a bit sweet for me. So ordered my favorite bourbon cocktail, with a twist. A Black Manhattan. Again, the bar presented an excellent version, with the black amaro perfectly balanced. Now came the Paella de Pollo. A roasted small half chicken, cooked well with wild mushrooms, chorizo de Bilbao, garlic aioli & grilled lemon. Absolutely delicious with protein to spare. We topped it all off with their own wonderful cheesecake & fruit sauces shared. All of this while enjoying the perfect outdoor weather at the beach with an ongoing promenade of folks enjoying the afternoon sunset. A wonderfully creative bar, outstanding service and so many flavors on the menu, we need to come back to try more! I highly recommend CTZN when in North San Diego in stylish Solano Beach!

I would look at Shirley O's pix.... she did a way better job of photographing than I did…read more We sooo lucked out, going on a Sunday when they make fresh Paella right out front. Smells so good as you get close to walking in.... There are so many things this restaurant does right, it's hard to know where to start. First, by accident we showed up on a Basque Holiday. Amazing luck. Imagine this: we order their Paella that takes 45 minutes to finish and while we wait, we order something from every category to taste. The combination of how they 'treat' the ingredients, how they 'plate' the food, how amazing their staff is, down to their advisor who is basically an executive chef .... How inspired he is, how much he appreciates the fine job everyone in his Kichen does, how inspired our waiter is ... how nice the hostess is ... well, this was the most amazing experience. I believe it is the CAÑA DE CABRA TOAST, that has sliced peaches and jam with goat cheese that is one of the best starters we have ever enjoyed. Lisa says: 'The mint on the top is just the right addition'. Grilled Shrimp and PATATAS BRAVAS are done right. Careful of the heat on the potatoes, if that's not your thing. But just look at what they are creating .... all the work put in to thinly slice them and top them. The broth with clams makes you ask for more bread. The Seafood Paella arrives. Lisa says: "The scallops are done right and the fish is very light. The rice is flavorful, more of a smokey rice with great flavor rather than just saffron. I am a NY'er and I know my cheesecake. I rarely order it because it's not like back home. But with their 'in house' pastry person, I just want to say every bite, every look, every berry, every texture is just perfect. This Basque cheesecake is something I will think about and come back for over and over again. As Lisa eats her birthday dessert, her eyes roll back in her head. Aaah. So it isn't just me that loves this dessert! Can't wait to try everything on the menu! I'm bringing San Diego Foodies and Carlsbad Foodies from Meetup back here, so we can taste everything I missed! Now I hope I can get everyone to share. lol With garlic, gusto and gratitude,  Chef Marian  San Diego Foodies Carlsbad Foodies

This review is from the last time I had oxtails here before they took them off the menu and…read moresubsequently closed. I visit Havana Grill whenever I want some tasty oxtail.  I noticed oxtail was one of the specials.  Last time I visited the oxtail was on the regular menu and you could order it anytime. Oxtail was extremely tender and juicy.  The mix of beef flavor and the spices in the sauce were delicious.  This is my favorite oxtail dish in town. French fries were crisp and had a delicious fried flavor.  The oil was fresh and there was no aftertaste.  Excellent fries. Pineapple upside down cake was dense and did not have a fresh baked aura.  The outside part was starting to harden like it was getting stale so I guess it was baked at least a day ago.  Cake had a mostly mild flavor.  I didn't taste the pineapple though the top was lined with it.  I did taste a ton of ginger flavor.  It appears pieces of ginger were mixed in with the pineapple.  I love ginger as part of soy/ginger seasoning for fish but not in a cake.  This is one of the worst pineapple upside down cakes I have had.  My favorite is at Roy's where you have to give them 30 minute notice and they bake it to order.  Roy's version was piping hot out of the oven, was moist and fluffy, with amazing pineapple flavor. Staff provided fast and friendly service.
