Tribeca barre was actually surprisingly challenging! Exercise is all about balance- when I came here did I have my heart pounding as I worked out? No, but I did focus on using muscle groups that are often unworked during more traditional workouts. The class is on the second floor. It has two changing rooms when you come in and plenty of cubbies to store your gear. The studio has grippy socks that you can purchase, but they also have loaners which I find really convenient in case you forgot your socks running from work. The instructor set up mats for everyone and then we grabbed weights. Additionally the studio provided you with small towels- a nice touch. You start off on your mats, before you move to the barre, with arms, planks, and a general warm-up. Then you move to the barre and get oriented. Real talk y'all, I work out every single day and during the time at the barre I had to take breaks and gawk in amazement at the other students killing it! The teacher, Bianca, did a great job of adjusting students (especially me as a new student). Additionally she offered good variations for people so they could maintain the integrity of the workout across skill levels. It was nice to be able to grab a free banana on the way out. No. Just no. Terrible class and really bad instruction. I can't even tell you how sad I was for all the new students (I have been a barre student for 5 years and taught for a year as well in Los Angeles at Pop Physique: full disclosure). I felt like they were getting a horrible intro to this type of class which can be so awesome! This was their Ballet Body Barre class. I do understand that it's a slight variation on a regular barre class, but it's still no excuse for inaudible music, not counting on the beat of the music, terrible vocal queuing for instructing the moves, no hands on corrections, and ignoring clients!!! hardly any upper body work. A few push ups on the barre, and shoulders, where we used a Thera band. we used it with little to no instruction on how to safely stand and pull the band without hurting your back and shoulder joints. I saw so many clients there with such bad form and NO CORRECTION!! I mean, barely any hands on corrections the whole class which are essential to this type of work out- if you do these exercises incorrectly you won't work the muscles correctly and worst case scenario you'll hurt yourself! The floors are not sprung wood and we were doing all the thigh work on our toes. This puts a TON of strain on the ball of your foot which is so hard on/bad for your foot. I eventually just walked over and grabbed a mat and sweet relief! Some of the thigh work was hard but honestly I think it was because barre classes, even the WORST one like this one, can be hard. It's the nature of the beast. Class ended with a stretch section and I swear to you the instructor Ebony stretched the whole time herself and ignored us while she zombie talked us through the stretches with really bad queuing. The girl next to me even actually asked for clarification (she was stretching the wrong leg and couldn't figure out what to do with her arm). The teacher legit IGNORED HER! I would never recommend this studio and I can't believe they feel ok taking people's money. I took a class through Class Pass: I'd be livid if I'd paid for this! I took my first Barre Wine class with Marsha and it was much fun! The teacher gave lots of detailed instruction which was very helpful for me as a beginner. The music was fun and groovy. Came to Barre Tribeca for the first time on a Tuesday night since it's closeby my office. The studio is a bit run down - there are only 2 small changing rooms, cubbys to put your belongings and they share 1 bathroom with the upstairs yoga studio. I've gotta say that I'm a crazy barre-er (I've only been to about 10 classes so far), so take my review as you may! The instructor I had didn't do most of the exercises with us which bugs me. She would demonstrate it once and then walk around and just observe. Few times did she guide us along with our positioning and postures.. so I found myself trying to figure it out with other people who were in the class with me. Barre TriBeCa was one of the first barre classes I tried about a year ago and I remembered liking the class, so I decided it was time to return on a Tuesday night. Unfortunately, my second experience at Barre TriBeCa was not as good as the first and I do not see myself returning again. The location and interior of the studio are nothing desirable. There are 12 yoga mats laid out on the floor and you chose one. I do like that it is a small class size, but it is also a small space. As class started the instructor, Emily, turned on the heat and it got very warm, but the scariest part was the heater hanging directly above me on the ceiling that did not look very secure. I was wondering if this furnace would pass some sort of inspection. Fortunately, the heat went off soon after and I was then able to concentrate on the class. We focused a lot on planks and then went into weights. Pretty standard. Next came the barre portion, and the disappointing part here is there are no mirrors in the studio. Call me vain, but I like to look at myself in the mirror as I work at the barre. Overall, the class was uninspiring and I did not see the instructor go around giving many corrections, which I know I usually need. One of the best things about Barre TriBeCa is their hand sanitizer. I really liked the smell of it. There are only two small changing rooms and nothing else in terms of amenities. Now that I have experienced numerous barre classes, I can see that Barre TriBeCa is not on the same level as many of the other more established barre studios. read more

Small studio but that means the classes are smaller as well, so nothing to complain about there. I took an Express Barre class here on a Thursday night and the instructor was upbeat and encouraging. It wasn't the toughest class I've been too, but I got a good workout. I think it's great that they have extra grippy barre socks in case you forgot yours so that you don't have to buy a new pair, because they're a bit pricey! read more

The worst barre class I have EVER taken. First off, the studio is smaller than a NYC bathroom. It looks like someone decided to convert her bedroom into a boutique fitness studio. The floors are wooden, which is fine for yoga, but not right for barre (you need a carpet). The mats are cheapo yoga mats, not the cushioned types that all other barre studios use. The weights look like they've been salvaged from my mother's aerobics classes (hot pink + purple with 80s font). That all would have been fine if the class was good, but NOPE. To start, the teacher skipped the usual little barre cardio section. Instead we did some weird neck rolls and ballet warmups and then straight into arms COLD. The arm workout was terrible---either moves that created a lot of shoulder tension in a bad way or bicep curls with weights that were much too light for those. The class then skipped to a very short sit-up section, which was not nearly as challenging or good as most barre abs. Then we moved onto the barre for some lackluster thighs, then maybe one seat exercise, then back to thighs, then to the mat for more seat. As a seasoned barre person, this drove me crazy. You should do each muscle group in one section, work it to fatigue, and then move on to another one. Instead, we never worked any muscles quite hard enough and there was none of that amazing barre shake. The worst part is that we kept pausing to "rest," which goes against the whole point of barre (to push through and work the muscle to fatigue). It also made the class extremely easy. My real favorite part, though, was the instructor. She would stop the whole class to demo instead of doing the exercise with us, which took up too much time and created confusion all around. She also kept giving this pained fake smile all the time that made me want to pelt her with one of those damn inflatable balls. Instead, I just shot her dirty looks, looked at the clock every 5 seconds, and bolted out of there was soon as the class was over. Save yourself your money and time and head to a real barre studio like Pure Barre or FlyBarre. read more

It's a bit confusing trying to find this studio because of all the construction scaffolding on the outside. The studio itself is small and holds only one class at a time. I took the Barre Wine with Marsha. While it has nothing to do with wine drinking, it was a fun barre workout infused with Caribbean African dance. I know that sounds weird but it only makes perfect sense when you try it. Marsha makes it fun and relaxing and because it's a small class, she pays close attention to your form and adjusts when needed. My only complaint about this workout is there are too many breaks in between sequences. I wish it was more continuous so I can really feel the burn. read more

This place is an incredible work out studio that not only leaves me feeling fit and confident but also gives me the motivation to come back. The class will never have more than around 11 students and often has less than 7, giving it an intimate setting and assuring that you get 1:1 time with the instructor to guarantee you're aligned, doing the exercises right etc. the instructors are all incredibly kind knowledgeable and super fit which always encourages me to work harder. Seriously, can't recommend this place more. It's the only place I go to and i already see a huge difference in my level of fitness since I started a couple of months ago. read more

I've never posted a yelp review before, but after this experience...I had to. It's been really hard for me to find a good barre class in the city that does not have a sky rocket price behind it, but there are some gems out there. I tried Barre TriBeCa out to see if this could be one of the gems, and unfortunately it fell SO short. PROS: They have free fruit to take; the staff is welcoming; some of the thigh work was challenging. Convenient location to subways CONS: The speed in which this class went was like the instructor pressed fast forward and would not stop. There was no attention to the actual movement or form, it was "how fast can you do this move." "updownupdownupdownupdown" The instructor would never walk around to see if people were actually in the right form. Half of the people weren't tucked in when you were supposed to be tucked in, and she'd say "that's great guys!" -- absolutely no correction whatsoever. I began correcting myself when i felt strain in my knees, but come on -- this is calling for some serious injuries to take place. There was also barely any stretching between each move, I guess that goes along with the "press fast forward" play. All in all, I'd never come back here...I really hope that the instructors are more attentive to the paying customers and get more training themselves on what actual barre is. read more

Honestly cannot say enough good about this studio! I have previously gone to a different barre studio which was fine, but Barre TriBeCa is SERIOUSLY challenging and so much fun. Agree with Stephanie B in the review below. Tried this class as the timing was right and I live in the area but never again. First of all the studio is not anything to write home about but anyway I thought maybe the workout would make up for that. The instructor was sweet enough but the classes were just not challenging or being done in a very awkward way and unsafe way. Most of the people in the class seemed really confused at the awkward instructions and cues - no one really had their poor form corrected. Some movements we were doing on our knees seemed like it would have been better done on standing up. After an hour I BARELY broke a sweat and I'm normally drenched in sweat at most other Barre studios. If you want a serious barre workout there are so many excellent options, I wouldn't waste time on this one. read more

I was surprised I enjoyed the class as much as I did! Its a hybrid of yoga and pilates, and very low impact. Very small room for class, there wasn't even a locker room. If you aren't visiting through classpass the classes are expensive for what you are getting. But its a total body workout to great music and went very fast! read more

Frankly I'm shocked at the bad reviews. To me, Barre Tribeca is a very challenging workout with nice people in a cool loft space. In fact one of the biggest draws of Barre Tribeca IS the raw space. So much of NYC these days - everything from restaurants to stores to salons to gyms - is ultra-polished brand spanking new and sterile. The one percenters have sucked the life out of this city. Places like Barre TriBeCa are the last vestiges of NYC with character, which anyone in their 20s or 30s can't remember because it's been Disneyland for 15 years already. Another thing: the idea of working out on a rug - as they do at Pure Barre and Physique 57 - totally wigs me out. Who knows what's growing in those fibers? Yuck! I do agree it would be good for instructors to make sure their voices can be heard above the music and to correct bad form when necessary. All in all, I highly recommend. read more

Absolutely love this studio and the laid back yet productive approach. I've worked with 4-5 of their instructors and enjoyed all of their classes. I started as a complete newbie and have felt comfortable in any class and the routines continue to be challenging as I am improving. A great, local place. I've taken multiple classes with about five different instructors here, all with different styles and formats to their classes. I found Barre Tribeca through ClassPass, and love being able walk here from home in an area without many exercise studios. The classes are fast-paced and tough, but they're definitely manageable and leave you feeling great for the rest of the day. All of the classes have focused on both upper and lower body. I love that this studio is a block and a half from my apt. The owner Lisa is so friendly and makes you feel at home as soon as you walk in the door. I have been going to Annette's classes 2x's a week for a year and I still feel super challenged during every class. The classes are small enough to get great feedback and corrections on how you can be working better. I love that the studio has a chill vibe and is neither snobby or pretentious as so many places in NY are. The best part is that I have seen a big change in my legs, just the result I was looking for! Barre Tribeca is one of a kind. First, the facility: If you are looking for a huge, corporate-chain gym, this is not for you. This isn't precious; it's real New York. The large studio, a second floor walk-up, was once an artist's studio and the abstract paintings still adorn the walls. It is super clean and very well equipped with everything you need for a great workout. There are two changing areas and lots of cubbies for your belongings. This boutique studio graciously offers bananas, water and towels. Grippy socks are available for purchase. Next is the actual workout: I have taken many classes here and the workout is always great. I love that it is a no-impact workout while still being very challenging. They play great music and no two workouts I've had there have ever been the same. I work out about 4-5 times a week at all different kinds of gyms doing different exercises, but I keep Barre Tribeca in the mix because it always delivers and challenges me! I was excited to find a barre class in Tribeca on Classpass, since most of the major studios don't have locations in Tribeca and are super expensive to buy individual classes. The studio is small without many amenities, but is welcoming and homey and much less pretentious than some of the bigger studios. Unfortunately, I have taken two classes at Barre Tribeca and was disappointed with both, so will probably not be returning. The classes felt unstructured and the teachers gave very little verbal instruction as to form and almost no hands-on corrections, which can make or break an exercise. Although I broke I sweat, it was probably because of the temperature in the studio more than because I was working hard. And while I felt a muscle burn a couple times, it was not the majority of class, and was mostly the major muscles (top of shoulders, quads) rather than targeted smaller muscle groups like other barre classes focus on. All of the exercises could have been much more effective (and probably safer) with more instruction and hands-on corrections to get me in the right positioning. read more

I like to leave my work out classes drenched in sweat and therefore avoided barre (and yoga) because my perception of it was that it was too easy. Boy, has Barre Tribeca taught me different! My first class was spent one on one with Emily and I've been loyal to her ever since. (I'm sure the other instructors are just as good but we've already got a great thing going here.) I leave her classes shaking and a bit stinky from how much I just perspired and wouldn't have it any other way! Something about barre forces you to confront the weaknesses you tend to avoid when you're working out on your own (for me it's my core and balance) and I appreciate the soreness for the following days. There's something endearing about her personality that doesn't make me feel awkward when I fall or do something wrong. After losing 50 lbs this class is exactly what I needed to start sculpting. I attended my first ever barre class at Barre Tribeca and it was amazing. I told the instructor Annette that it was my first class and she took time throughout the class to insure I was using proper form and doing the moves correctly. The class was TOUGH but very rewarding. Annette is a pro-- very motivating, inspiring and easy to follow. The class size is small enough to give personal attention and not feel overwhelming. The owner - Lisa - makes everyone feel at ease and has extras like free water, etc. The studio has a very lofty Tribeca feel- a perfect addition to neighborhood! I've really enjoyed the classes at Barre Tribeca. The classes move at a fast pace so you don't get bored and still get a good workout. Since the studio doesn't have mirrors, you sometimes have to crane your neck to see what the instructor is doing. I actually like that they don't have mirrors, but it could make things more challenging for a beginner. I feel like the instructors are attentive without being overbearing, but that could just be me. I've been to other barre classes where the instructors correct things for the sake of correcting things and end up contradicting themselves. Overall, a good place for barre classes. read more
