My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a staycation and were so excited to try the restaurant. Unfortunately, our experience was incredibly disappointing from the moment we arrived. First, the hostess didn't greet or acknowledge us. She simply stared at us before eventually seating us. After we were seated, we waited... and waited. No one ever came to our table. We were never greeted by a server, offered water, or even acknowledged by any staff member. We noticed two ladies behind the bar and neither came to check on us . What was supposed to be a special evening ended up being a frustrating and disappointing experience. We went for brunch on Saturday when we were in town for our grandson's graduation and had an amazing experience. Jimmy was our waiter and he was awesome. He gave great recommendations, which I believe can be difficult to do because everyone has a different taste. Barrel & Derrick is our go to date night spot! We have been wanting to try the August Special Menu. The Bang Bang Shrimp is AMAZING and I really hope they consider adding it to the regular menu as an APP it was so delicious and crispy! My husband had the Gourmet House Wings with the guajillo sauce, his favorite. For our entrees my husband ordered from the August menu and he got the Grilled Lamb Lollipops and I ordered the Saffron Risotto. My husband enjoyed the lamb but it was on the small side he also ordered a side of truffle fries with a side of hatch chile queso. My Risotto was cooked to perfection, I loved the calamari cooked 2 ways and the crispy kale added in gave it a nice crunchy texture. For dessert, we both ordered the two new August desserts. The Pistachio Burnt Basque Cheesecake and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. My husband loved the cheesecake it was a large piece and he couldn't even finish it all and he said that it was better than the regular cheesecake they have on the menu. My Sticky Toffee Pudding with the brown butter caramel, vanilla ice cream and fleur del sel was so rich and was sweet and salty. The cake was moist and soft. Our server Joann, was amazing as always. We have had her as a server a few times now and she gave us amazing recommendations and told us we had to come for the September Menu which we made a reservation for next week to try! We look forward to the new offerings. It's nice to have a restaurant to go to that is not only delicious but is innovative and not afraid to try new things from time to time. I'm in Odessa once a month for work. On top of loving the Marriott for lodging they also have an amazing restaurant called Barrel & Derrick. I travel quite a bit all around Texas and rarely can I say the hotel restaurant is one of the best places to eat in the city. This place never disappoints. From the staff, to the quality of food.....temperature, presentation and most importantly flavor. Tonight I kept it simple and had their hearty potato soup and Turkey BLT sandwich with fries. A year ago this place was fantastic - everything on the menu was delicious and full of flavor. Unfortunately, the menu has changed and for the price, the food no longer matches the quality. I'm not sure if the chef has changed, but the dishes now lack seasoning and flavor. The ambience is beautiful, and service is great, but the food just doesn't deliver. This used to be my go-to place for important lunches with medical doctors and regional directors, but I can no longer take them here as it would be disappointing. Ordered hot Nashville chicken sandwich to go. Sandwich didn't have any cabbage or pickles as described in the menu. I didn't realize the error until I was back in my room. Disappointing. Had dinner here with some co-workers last night and aside from the banging noise by the bar area our service and dinner were excellent, our server Mackenzie was extremely friendly and polite, she was also very attentive and helpful. We had a couple appetizers to start the Cowboy Queso and Hatch Chili Chicken Quesadillas which were both really good, I ordered the Ribeye steak MW with asparagus, the steak was cooked perfectly and the asparagus was just as amazing and delicious. My co-workers had the ribeye also and one had the chicken fries steak, we were all very pleased with our meals. I have worked in the food and beverage industry as a server in fine dining and for a hotel restaurant this place is excellent, great atmosphere and the service from our server was top notch, not very often do you find a server that is as professional as Mackenzie is. She checked on us and ensured the food was to our liking and kept our drinks full, she is the kind of server you want when you're eating out. Great place and can't wait to eat here again. Love the setting! Might give it another try because there's potential, but service was lacking. Food: My steak was apparently "Wagyu" per the description on the menu for Steak Frittes. I've actually cooked Wagyu myself. The cut I cooked (sous vide and finished on a grill) could have been cut with a fork. That was not the case with my steak here. It was either a bad cut or simply wasn't Wagyu. Flavor was good though. My wife ordered the burger and asked if she could have salad instead of fries. When asked which dressing, she simply asked for a vinaigrette. Per the menu, the burger included bacon. When it came out, no bacon and vinegar for a salad dressing. Service: Our server was a very sweet young lady. She needs more training based on bringing vinegar for a salad dressing, not returning to our table to check on how the order was, and not knowing if the steaks with no specific description were Prime or Choice (they're Prime, apparently). need to give you a little back story on this complaint so you know just how bad you messed things up. My daughter graduated high school in 2017. 3 days later she was in a serious head-on collision and suffered many injuries. She had to relearn how to walk and talk. Her recovery took 2 years but she did recover. She went to school in Odessa to become an x-ray technician. Before she graduated she went to clinicals at the 2 hospitals not far from Barrell and Derrick. As a reward she told us that when she graduated she wanted to go with her family to Barrell and Derrick to celebrate. Fast Forward to May 10th 2025 when she graduated with honors. We all went to Barrell and Derrick and the shit show began. I'm pretty sure our server was drunk or impaired. Staggering and we watch her have difficulty using the credit card terminal for other customers. 2 hours with no food. Our orders were taken, but not food. I talked with the server and I guess the manager. They said they were having trouble with the system. I understand that. 3rd hour our food comes. Everyone's food is cold. I complain again. Manager says she will comp the starters and desserts. No offer to reheat or redo. Going our hour 4 no desserts still. We ask for them in boxes. No boxes ever came even though we asked many times. We did our best to hide all this from Ellie. She had a family drive and flew in. The only good thing was we were all together in the shiftiest restaurant I've ever been to. I really wanted to love Barrel & Derrick, but unfortunately our experience here lacked some of the finer touches that are important to a high-end dining experience. When we arrived for our 7:30 reservation, we had to wait at least 5 minutes at the hostess table for anyone to come help us (which would have been more understandable had the place been super busy, but it wasn't.) When we were seated out waiter came over soon after and took our drink orders. I had the butterfly kiss martini, which was good. We had the bacon wrapped quail and burrata salad for apps. The salad was really good and fresh. The quail was a weird texture but the the bacon maple glaze was really delicious. I had the steak frites as my entree, and it was cooked perfectly. The chimichurri was good, but not as thick as I prefer. I also got a side of brussel sprouts, and they looked better than they tasted. They were very underseasoned. Then we ordered the banana bread pudding, and it took forever to get out the kitchen. By the time we got it, the pudding portion was a weird room temperature when it should have been warm. The pecan ice cream was really good though. Overall, the atmosphere was intimate and nice. I mostly enjoyed it, but the inconsistency with service and a few off things about the food just disappointed me a bit. read more

Make a reservation! But be aware, that even when you do, they still can take a while to seat you. Service needs a little work. Hostesses have always been a little short with us, not super friendly and the host stand isn't always staffed... we've waited for upwards of 10 minutes for someone to greet us... even when the place wasn't busy...Having said all that, the Waitstaff is understaffed for sure but when they are able to attend to you, the servers are GREAT!!! Food has always been amazing! Try the lobster mac! And the Caesar salad with steak is also really good! Charcuterie board.. meh. I was one of 4 guess when I walked in, I had to have the front desk of the hotel to call since no one was at the host stand, just to be seated. The first server I saw passed me to someone else who only took my order. And I never saw them again. I order the All American breakfast for $12 and a hot tea, the plate presented to me had so much oil on it that it saturated everything and all I could taste was the oil. Even the tea tasted like oil. I am glad I was the only one eating since when the bill came it was missing one of the 2 items I ordered.
