Barrels O Candy is a wonderful blast from the past! The candies are organized in large barrels around the room. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful in finding any candy you can think of. I walked away with a quite a good amount of truffles/chocolates. The chocolates were delicious however several of them couldn't be differentiated between in flavor. I do wish they came with a card showing which one was which or were labeled in some way. When I got them home and started eating them I had forgotten what I had purchased. We bought 30 truffles. Several of them had gone bad and had a sour milk taste. Apart from that the other truffles all taste very much alike and there isn't a strong flavor besides chocolate. read more

Normally this is not the sort of place we would drive out of our way for. So why do we? Because it is the best source for my husband to stock up on authentic Dutch Drop. You know, the strong, salty black licorice. It's an ethnic thing. The store is also a great source for old-fashioned hard candies like Horehound, Sassafras and Lemon Drops. If you don't mind being ripped off, the candy store is fun to browse with a big selection that you can mix & match to pay by the pound. The price is $8.93 per half pound, but there are no scales for you to know how much you've put in the basket. When it's time to pay, the lady pours your candy into a large bowl (you have no idea if they start to weigh your candy at 0 pounds like an honest business), "weighs" it, and types any number she wants to charge you into the register. Pretty sure I got about 6 ounces of candy, but was charged a flat $10. If you go for the novelty and variety of candy, this place is decent. If you want to support an honest (or friendly) business, this place is not it. read more

I'm fairly local. This business charges by the half pound for their candy. I was quite dismayed when I got home and found they had added 3 very heavy Jelly Belly suckers in my bag. Compared to any other candy store I've been in around CA (Lafayette, Petaluma, Monterey) this is by far the most expensive. The overpriced, stale bag of candy was a disappointment bite after bite. My mother-in-law's variety of taffy flavors were all sub-par, and she said they tasted old and left a bad taste in her mouth. $2.25 for a small travel-size pouch of Hot Tamales? The movie theater has better deals than that. If you are in Virginia City and need something sweet, perhaps a fresh donut or ice cream is the better choice. They literally give you a huge bucket to stuff all your goodies in while shopping in the store, which could be trouble if you have a lot of little ones! One of the coolest things I have ever seen. They really do have BARRELS of candy. Maybe 50+ barrels of everything. They feature one of the largest taffy selections that I have ever experienced. In fact I'm willing to bet I was just as excited about walking through here as my kids were. The staff pretty much leaves you alone and let's you roam about. When you first enter the store you grab a bucket and go from one delicious barrel to the next. Once your done they weigh all of the taffy and bam there's your price. Wow! This is one of the nicest candy stores I've ever been to. It's really clean, colorful and very pleasant to walk around. They have all kinds of candy and it's so much fun to reminisce (and buy!) all the vintage candy you can't find elsewhere. Want a variety of candy?! This is one of many places to go! They have a huge assortment of salt water taffy. I'm not a huge fun of them but so much to choose from and they have a nice variety of other candies as well. Even a little chocolate case! They have some candy classics , like Astro pops , candy buttons, bit of honeys etc. And a nice variety of black licorice, I am not a fan of black licorice, but I found a few I actually do like. What I love about this place is they are so generous with the samples of black licorice, they let you try each one and explain each one, the type and texture. I of course made a special trip to VC to get my faves!! I love the molasses filled called Finnskas molasses, they are soft with a mild black licorice taste and a nice sweet filled center of molasses that makes this one perfect! My next fave is one that looks like a brown sugar cube, it is more of a medium black licorice taste (in my opinion) with a hint of brown sugar taste, the texture is more chewy or stiff texture. This place is a ripoff. Avoid like the plague. We paid $18.17 for two truffles, and a handful of candies. The truffles were not very good, and it would have been cheaper and ten times better to get a pound of chocolates from Godiva, Sees, or Walmart. read more

Typical touristy candy shop. Fun atmosphere and they have a Lot of old fashioned candies. I was Very disappointed with the prices. I paid $1.00 for a tootsie pop, $4.50 for a small lollipop, $3.95 for a bottle of coca cola, and $4.00 for a scoop of ice cream. We walked down the street to "finders keepers" and a bottle of coke was $1.00, a tootsie pop was $0.25, and a lollipop was $1.50...If you want ice cream go here I guess but don't buy candy. I can pretty much confirm what the reviewer from 7/05/2013 said. The store is overpriced and has terrible customer service. I was recently in the store and after having my candy totaled and still deciding if I was going to pay that price, the young man in the store rang up my card before I could object and then began to have a conversation with the girl in the store about what she had planned for the night. I was literally debating with my partner if the price was too high and without second thought the fella rang it up. Terrible business practice or perhaps shrewd since all sales are final. Will not be returning and only wish I had read the previous reviews before going. Hopefully this keeps someone else from making the same mistake. read more
