I recently visited this adorable coffee shop on one of my visits to Virginia City, NV. I'm not a regular coffee drinker, but I was looking to get my iced brew fix and there aren't many options in town. You have to drive into Reno or Carson City to hit up a Starbucks or comparable coffee place. I heard from locals about The Roasting House. I saw pics of celebrities like Terrance Howard and Jeremy Renner sitting on the quaint little bar stools inside. Roasting House has officially entered the coffee chat room! On my first visit, I saw that the Iced Brew special was Carrot Cake. Um? Only my favorite cake! I had the best timing and hit the jackpot! Of course that's what I ordered. It was delicious! The decor is absolutely adorable. It's like a beautiful Victorian feel to it. It has beautiful furniture, pictures on the wall, and they have coffee, jewelry for sale and other items. Additionally, they roast their coffee beans on-site with a large vintage roasting machine towards the back of the shop. The place definitely has an elegant, antique-like ambience that fits perfectly with VC. They also serve various baked goods, bagel sandwiches and other breakfast items. You will have a great start to your day by coming here first. Service is impeccable and the staff is super friendly. As you go towards the rear of the shop, there is a beautiful patio that overlooks Virginia city and the streets below C Street. It's a perfect place to sit and enjoy your morning coffee and breakfast item. It's very peaceful with beautiful scenery and they've added some rustic patio furniture. I've been back a couple times and the prices are really good. I'm from the Bay Area and compared to where I'm from the prices are more than reasonable for coffee. Is it worth the ride from Reno for a cup of coffee? Subjective to the individual. But, if you like to ride, and enjoy the routes up to Virginia City, the Roasting House is an excellent place to stop for an alternate beverage than what is commonly sold up here. My new favorite stop in Virginia City! After walking back up cause the last restaurant at the end of the strip that we didn't eat at cause the cashier was mean. This place made us feel very welcome! It was around 3:30p and this cafe was our last stop. They only had 4 flavors available. It's okay, I liked 50% of the flavors. I chose a scoop of Cookies & Cream. The cafe is located in an 1876 brick building best known as "The Brass Rail Saloon" before the Roasting House took over in 2011. Pretty cool that the original Brass Rail saloon counter still stands and now serves as a full service espresso and old fashioned soda bar. It has been a bit since I have been in The Roasting House and a good bit has changed. Today we were here for breakfast. The restaurant is still clean with plenty of seating at tables and the coffee bar. The staff was nice but wasn't too personable. The menu has been condensed down and a good bit of choice has been take out (before you could choose your meat-now they come as is). The food now comes out in to-go containers and paper bags with the food wrapped in foil (regardless of dine in or take out) instead of on regular plates. My dad and my husband had the Breakfast Bagel on an everything Bagel. There was an abundance of scrambled egg and ham and it was well seasoned. I had the Breakfast Sandwich also but upgraded to a waffle instead of a bagel. Mine was more waffle than egg and ham. The waffle was soggy. The sandwich was very one note. I probably will stick to the Roasting House for my coffee instead of food. read more

I stopped into The Roasting House in Virginia City expecting a simple sit-down breakfast with a good coffee. I ordered the Belgian waffles and a latte. The LATTE WAS ACTUALLY VERY GOOD--nicely made and probably the highlight of the stop. Unfortunately, the waffles were disappointing. They tasted like they had come straight from a freezer rather than being freshly made. The syrup was "pure cane syrup," with no hint of maple flavor--real or imitation. The three waffles were served in a styrofoam takeout box with plastic utensils, and the fork I received had bent tines. After a few bites my stomach was already turning, and I ended up throwing the whole meal away. The staff also weren't particularly welcoming. Maybe it was just early in the morning (8 a.m. on a Saturday) and it's a busy tourist town, but the interaction felt flat enough that I almost felt like I needed to resuscitate the conversation just to get basic communication. The overall vibe also felt a bit like being in Williamsburg, VA or Disney World--just another tourist mouth to feed. Get them in, get them out. After all, most visitors are only in town for a few hours. I wouldn't give the ambiance high marks either and the furniture is uncomfortable. I moved three times hoping for better seating. You can't really sit at the counter either. People were reaching over me to get napkins and lids for their drink. There were spills at the other two spots. No one bothered to wipe it down. The latte was good, but overall the breakfast experience didn't live up remotely to my expectations or the price. read more

The Roasting House in Virginia City is such a hidden gem! We stopped in for a drink while in town for the Father Daughter Dance and loved the cozy, historic vibe of the space--it's housed in a beautiful brick building from 1876, formerly The Brass Rail Saloon. On our way out of town, we grabbed some cold brew to go, along with their Cold Brew Concentrate in these stunning blue flip-top bottles--such a cool and unique touch! The coffee was smooth and delicious, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. My girlfriend and I came last weekend for our first time at The Roasting House. It was cold outside and we were in the mood for some good hot chocolate. Walking in we were greeted right away. I asked if they had any dairy alternatives and I was surprised by the number of dairy free milks they had. I chose oat milk, it's my favorite, and my girlfriend went with regular milk. While our drinks were made we wandered around the small cafe. The deco is cute, they have curtains made from coffee bean sacks. In the back of the cafe they have an old fashioned and still working coffee bean roaster. We were a few minute too late to see it in action but hope to catch it sometime soon. We got our hot chocolates pretty quickly and they were both delicious, better than some other places that I frequent. Between the service and the drinks, we plan on coming back often. Well, if it's the only game in town that's open early, at least the view off the patio is fantastic. I was looking for a breakfast spot that opened early and this was it. Their focus is more on their coffees than the, ha ha, food they serve. It seemed like their breakfast foods where an afterthought and not really their main business. I tried to have scrambled eggs prepared a different way and was told that the eggs used were already a mix as opposed to separately cracking fresh eggs for the scramble, I like my scrambled eggs beaten after they hit the pan so there's some separation of whites and yolks, also I like my eggs wet, well that wasn't going to happen, you can't have it your way here. The meal was served off a styrofoam box with toast of your choice and some very sad looking fruit. The server and cook I imagine was efficient in getting the meal out the kitchen, can't blame her since the restaurant portion of this establishment is set up by someone else I would assume. My friend and I arrived in Virginia City a little early today, so we stopped in for some coffee and breakfast before the shops opened. We decided to share a Chocolate Nugget Waffle and a Mini Breakfast. I got a vanilla latte as well. Breakfast was good, eggs and bacon and a chocolatey waffle definitely hit the spot! Pretty much looks like another old building in town but with a more modern menu of a coffee shop instead of a saloon. This is one of the few places in town that doesn't serve any alcohol so come here if you're looking for a place to get something besides that. Prices are okay. They may be kind of high but not too high though. I had the iced coffee. It's about $3.50 for a regular. They have non dairy milk in case you didn't know that. Good drink when it's hot. They also have some lighter fare if you're eating something. I had a Tommyknocker to eat. It's $7 for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This is a lot for a simple sandwich. It's good. What a cute space right there on Virginia City's main thoroughfare, C Street. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Their outdoor patio in the back overlooks the mountain and the St. Mary Church is visible. Their patio to the side of the building has views of the main street. Ordered Iced Latte with triple shot and it was really strong. Yes! The space looked like it used to be a saloon, just like the majority of the establishments on this street. It's beautiful. When people think of Virginia City, the "Old West" is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Simply because this historic Nevada tourist area takes you back to the late-1800's in the heart of the mining gold rush days. Well jump forward to the present day and not a lot has changed here. This takes me on my quest for a coffee shop and thanks to my Yelp app, I just had to check out "The Roasting House". I came here on the morning of Sunday 9/6/2020 at around 10:30am. Since this was Labor Day weekend, it was very crowded with tourists from all over the area. Since this particular place was following strict State of Nevada restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all indoor seating was closed. The ordering process was rather simple though as you simply wait in line and place your order with at the front window. Since it was a rather hot 85° at 10:30am (and smoky due to the California wildfires), it was only appropriate that I ordered an iced drink. I opted for a 16 oz. of their "Iced Vanilla Latte" priced at a very reasonable $4.75. Since it was busy as can be here, my drink took about 10 minutes to make but understandable with this many customers. Although there was no indoor seating, they have a huge deck with an abundance of tables. Best of all, you have an amazing view of Mount Davidson that stretches out for miles. It is a very scenic look and when you're out here, you feel as if you've been time warped back to the 1800's. You can also see the train station where they do train tours on the "Virginia & Truckee Railroad" train tour. Going back to my coffee drink, their Iced Vanilla Latte hit the spot. Keep in mind that this was a very sweet drink so if you're looking for something more on the bitter side, I would not suggest going with vanilla. However, I prefer the sweet drinks and this was definitely hit the spot. Overall, "The Roasting House" is definitely the go-to coffee house in Virginia City; wonderful staff, a variety of hot/iced drinks, a generous food menu, and probably one of the most unique views you'll find. My rating, an above average four stars. read more

On a brisk, winter day in Virginia City, what better to warm up with than a great cuppa Joe or hot cocoa! Enter The Roasting House. After careful consideration, we ordered lunch and some warmers, then collected our goodies and headed for the large patio in the back. The view was breathtaking but the air was a chill. So, back inside we retreated to finished our tasty paninis and savor our coffee bean creations in their generous dining According to the barista, they use Ghirardelli chocolate in their masterpieces. She also included the fact that the beans are locally ground. I'm not sure how much that matters, but it might to you. I thought it worth mentioning. Personally, I really dig the aroma off the roasters!!! I appreciate that this roaster produces a rich, robust coffee that can be on the steering side, in a good way. This it totally unlike the quick hit drive up joints back East that depends on a volume business. Let's face it, VC can be touristy and pricey, but I don't feel The Roasting House is gauging customers. If the price seems high, consider it paid admission to have fancy coffee in the Wild West with an incredible view! 12/20 read more

Arrived here about 1:30pm on the Saturday of Hot August Nights. We were with a friend who has a gluten allergy and he knew that they offered gluten free options. We stepped inside and grabbed menus before ordering at the counter. The staff were friendly and efficient and in no time at all we had placed our orders. The interior is clean and comfortable and they also have a very nice deck area with great views of the surrounding area. We decided to sit inside since it was over 90 degrees. Our orders arrived in a timely manner and looked and tasted delicious. Our friend was really impressed with his gluten free Monte Christo sandwich! You would think this coffee house was there "forever" like just about everything else. Well, the building used to be a saloon in the old days, and didn't become a place of finr coffee until about 10 years ago. I got a really good cup of Mocha there. We drank part of our coffee drinks from their deck in the back while looking at the view of the hills. They actually roast coffee beans there and sell it on site and on-line. If you are wanting a good cup of coffee while you are in Virginia City, I would highly recommend The Roasting House. read more

This is my destination food experience in Virginia City. They've got gluten free waffles and they're not afraid to use them to make a breakfast sandwich. The first time I went here a few years back, the gf waffles were totally different - texture and flavor were spot on - today, they definitely left something to be desired. I still really love the ambiance in this place and f you're into ice cream, milk shakes, etc., you'll be happy here. I wish it was as good as I remember, but still ok, especially with the gluten free option available (although the batter could've used a pinch of salt..) read more
