Dave was excellent! I felt like I could trust him and that he was genuinely wanting to do what's best for me. My car was making funny sounds when I put on the brakes so I had him check it out. He checked it right on the spot and told me that they were fine. I asked him how much it cost for him to check and he said nothing! So I could tell he's the guy I want to continue working on my car. I brought my car back a couple days later and got an oil change as well as a much needed belt changed. The prices of parts and labor were reasonable. This place is wonderful for car services. Dave is a very honest straight forward guy and will give you a fair price. He will tell you if you really need something and not try to up sell you anything you don't really need. I wish I would have known about him when I had my old car. I've been to places were they try and sell you stuff you really don't need, well that doesn't happen here at all. They are very flexible with your schedule and will even drop and pick you up if you live or work close. Dave and his employees are great. They know their craft and they are straightforward in their explanations of what work needs to be done and what might be postponed. Their charges are very reasonable, below many other places, and their service so consistently good that I come all the way from Cupertino to get automotive service. After a botched valve job by Smog Pros (at San Antonio and Charleston in Palo Alto), my engine was leaking oil. Badly. The proprietor refused to fix it because it was a "warped head" and not bad workmanship. Dave and his people correctly identified the leak as a bad head gasket installation, and fixed it for a song. This is the kind of mechanic you want to have on hand. Honest, forthright, skilled and and conscientious. He's been doing automotive work for me for two decades. I rarely write a review but I had such a great experience that I felt compelled to share it. I had borrowed my friends pickup truck to move a piece of furniture. I was on empty when I pulled into the station at 4:00 in the afternoon only to discover that the gas cap needed a key and my friend was in in Oakland. Late, anxious, and growing increasingly upset, I was looking at having to wait over two hours for my friend to drive down from Oakland and miss dinner with my 91 year old Grandmother. I had no idea how to break it off. I approached one of the service guys and explained my situation. He was super nice proudly introduced me to his son David and within minutes David was able to get the gas cap off!!!!! Not only did he save the day. David and everyone at the station was kind and friendly. While I was there I observed several people pull in with questions or in need of just a little help. My first car was a 1984 Mercedes, and that car managed to leak every imaginable fluid, fluids I didn't know cars HAD: freon from AC, brake fluid, oil, power steering fluid, windshield washing soap and some other stuff I couldn't identify. Also, depending on the weather, either the heating or the air conditioning would stop working. When that was ok, various lights would go off in one week intervals... I brought in my punctured tire to see if they could patch it up but unfortunately, the lining and interior of the tire was damaged hence I have to get a new tire. Service/repair staff was efficient and helpful and they did not charge me for the initial assessment of the tire. read more

After being stranded at work and waiting for the AAA jump, prepared myself for the worst by looking for a AAA Approved repair center. This shop and Dave lived up to the reviews when my AAA tech ruled out a dead battery (thank you, too, Collin!). Left my dead car and key with the night watch, had my car back the following early afternoon. Granted this was a case where it was quickly identified to be the starter and was an easy enough repair, my car was one of many that night and I took up what appeared to be the last spot not obstructing ingress into the lot and gas pumps. Dave worked me in and got me going in less than 24 hours. With no backup plan other than the bus to get around, this was much appreciated. He was very easy to speak with and called me back when he said he would. Can't speak for the rate I was quoted, since I didn't care for much more than getting my car going again. But this already highly inconvenient and moderately stressful experience could have been worse. Dave pulled through for me, so good reason for this shop to have AAA's seal of approval. read more

Fair pricing, honest assessments, and expert work--I've taken my car there for years for just about everything (except fixing the windshield, for which Dave referred me to a fab glass guy instead). I have no expertise in automotive tech, so I look for people who make me feel like they're giving me the same guidance they'd give to someone in their own family, and Dave and the guys at Barron Shell do exactly that. As my boyfriend who knows a bit more about cars says, this place is legit (but I knew that in my own way, anyway). The shop is busy, so being flexible with your schedule and planning ahead helps, but they do answer their phone (I tried today and someone picked up after a couple rings), and they'll try to help anyone if they can (my first time there was simply because my tire seemed flat and they were the nearest gas station--they found the leak and patched it on the spot). read more

We were down from San Francisco to go to Fry's when my Honda started making bad noises. We stopped in a parking lot to check it out, it just got worse. Of course we called AAA who said they could take us to place of our choice within 3 miles, and noted that the AAA approved stations were checked out by AAA, mostly small, family run businesses with great reputations. So we used our phones to see what yelp had to say and picked Barron Park. Excellent decision. We had to get back to SF for a deadline, so we left the Honda with David and co. He checked it out and called back quickly to tell us it was only the distributor. I was relieved because it had sounded like something in the engine block. David said best, cheapest thing to do was to buy a prefab one and put it in. In the old days they would have replaced parts, but much cheaper to just put in a new one. They could get it done the next day (Sunday). I had recalled that I had something in the distributor fixed only 6 months prior. I checked my paperwork and indeed many parts of the distributor supposedly had been replaced. I asked David to check the one he took out and give it to me. It looked like nothing had been done before (very old distributor), and the last guys charged me more to supposedly replace a few parts than David charged to replace the whole thing! In addition, I had left the Honda dealer after many years because they told me to replace the timing belt (2nd time in 70,000 miles - 20 year old Honda). A year and a couple thousand miles later they told me a few gaskets (few dollars worth) were leaking and they would have to pull it all open to fix (~$1500). They easily could have replaced everything for almost nothing, but hadn't the prior year and would not step up and fix their mistake. Actually I thought that they were just trying to rip me off. I went to the place that botched the distributor and they said, just keep an eye on in it. So I worried about it when ever I drove. I asked David about this whole thing. First he noted that the dealer pushing to get the timing belt changed every 6 years or 60,000 miles without carefully considering the the condition of the belt was a bit extreme. Then he showed me pictures and explained how it would really take some strange alignment of the stars for these hand full of small gaskets to actually cause any real problem. I was going to have him fix it, but he said really to stop worrying about it. I could tell from our discussions that he really was an expert in his field, and had attended special training for such issues with Hondas and Toyotas. He was up on all the latest. The best I've met in some 35 years of car ownership. Everyone there was great, honest, friendly, held my hand, took all the time necessary to answer all my questions. I even met Dad. Truly a family-owned business which really cares about it's service and reputation. I would take my car all the way to Palo Alto from SF for any serious repair now to leave the car with David. All around best experience I've ever had. read more

I was referred to Barron Park Shell five years ago and -- despite living in San Francisco and commuting to Santa Clara -- I have had Dave and his crew perform all work on both of my cars. It's WELL worth the trip. Dave provides trusted guidance based on what my cars need and what my budget can withstand -- not on the biggest sale for him. In fact, he assessed a used car I bought (for free) and gave me the info I needed to go back to the dealership to get everything fixed free of charge! The crew is always friendly, up-to-date on the latest automotive technology (e.g., best tires for certain models, conditions, etc.), and fair. Unexpectedly outstanding. My ancient diesel benz wouldn't crank after work one night, and they happened to be the nearest AAA-recommended shop. With 400,000+ miles on the car I feared the worst, but they were able to get it running again with a new starter in less than 24 hours. When I picked it up a quick chat with the owner revealed a depth of expertise and integrity far beyond what I've encountered at most shops. I only go to this station for my smog checks every few years, but when I called this year to schedule an appointment, all they needed was my name and they were able to pull up their service record indicating what car I owned. Two minutes later I had an appointment scheduled for the next morning. When I arrived, all the paperwork was already made up for me, and a quick signature was all that was needed. 35 minutes and one latte later (a Starbucks is within an easy walk), the job was done and the car was ready to go. I have gone to Barron Park Shell for over 2 years. I started going there for little things like a light on b/c my gas cap was lost or battery issue or wheel this or that. I had never gone anywhere but a car dealership for service so I was starting slow to see if Dave/Barron Shell were honest, fair and good. Well, they are all that and then some. They pick me up at my work and drop me off. They worked with me on price etc. HUGE. They told me what could wait and what couldn't and what was "frivilous". This is old school mechanical shop like my grand dad owned and would go to... Good values, honesty and reputation. They keep their customers - coming and coming.... If there was EVER anything wrong with something.. like a noise that was fixed- returned again, Dave would look at it and get right to it or schedule me in as soon as he could. If it were a danger issue, he would prioritize it. If it was there error or oversight - (human thing, it happens) - he owned up to it. I referred a friend to him and she too likes him. I have told 3 girls at work about him b/c well, I trust him. He works hard and is always there. This used to be his dad's business and now it is his and it's his name... he is old school. He may sometimes be a bit over priced compared to the quick -shops but you know.... he gives you the other things for cheap so it levels out to be the same. If I go to Jiffy Lube and pay 50 for an oil change, and go bk b/c something was wrong... I don't know if I will see the same person to get it fixed for free. Dave is Barron Park Shell.
