I transferred my care to Barrow Institute after relocating, expecting a level of excellence comparable to the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas, where I had previously been treated for my neurological condition. Unfortunately, my experience did not reflect that standard with Dr Rinu Abraham. After my initial appointment, I received no follow‑up and was later told that I had "fallen through the cracks." When I asked my physician what approaches typically help patients with my condition improve their sleep, I was immediately told to "see a psychiatrist," which felt dismissive and unrelated to my actual question. I shared this concern with the director of neurology, hoping for a more thoughtful response. At my next visit, I felt reprimanded rather than supported. The physician emphasized that they do not prescribe sleep medication, despite the fact that I had not requested any. I was simply seeking guidance on evidence‑based strategies that might help patients with my specific neurological disorder. I also asked further questions about determining my progression of the condition and other topics a 'specialist' should know of, not in this case. They told me I can go online to a company that can test my markers, but they cannot. I was baffled. This experience did not reflect the level of care I expect or need. As a result, I chose to continue my treatment at Mayo Clinic, where I have found the comprehensive, patient‑centered approach I was looking for. My doctor referred me over to Barrow Brain and Spine. I need a simple procedure. This clinic and doctors should not have the word brain in their title. I called 2 days ago. No answer, weirdest answering system ever created. Someone calls me back this morning. They give me another phone number where NOBODY ANSWERS!! Meanwhile, I've got pain shooting down my shoulder and arm from a bulging disc. If this is how they start their relationship with a patient, I would run as fast as you can to another clinic or doctor. Imagine letting them operate on your brain. read more

Review of Barrow's Office in Chandler with Dr. Sanford and scheduling I'm writing this review to share my frustrating and disappointing experience with Barrows' office and their handling of my recent procedure. Before undergoing a medical branch block (a diagnostic procedure to see if a nerve-burning treatment would be effective), I specifically asked the office staff to verify the cost and insurance coverage with my provider, Aetna. I was told clearly -- twice -- that it would only cost my regular $40 copay. Based on that information, I agreed to proceed. Fast forward a few weeks, and I receive a surprise bill for $500 on top of my $40 copay. When I called to question this, I was essentially given the runaround. It is incredibly frustrating that a medical office, whose staff do this kind of billing and insurance verification every day, could misinform a patient so significantly. This wasn't a small mistake -- it was a major oversight that directly affects patients financially. To make matters worse, at my follow-up appointment, the PA told me that because my pain had "come and gone," the procedure likely shouldn't have been done at all. That left me feeling even more misled -- not only did I get stuck with a much higher bill than I was told, but I also may have undergone a procedure unnecessarily. I understand that mistakes happen, but this feels like a breakdown in both communication and patient care. Transparency, especially around costs and medical necessity, should be a basic standard -- not something patients have to chase down or fight for after the fact. read more

So after waiting over an hour for Dr crisp to finally come in and talk to us he was a rude and sarcastic responding to my questions about why he has a certain diagnosis of my 87 year old mom. With " Ok Doc" sarcastic and condescending attitude is ridiculous and completely unacceptable. I don't recommend this place and certainly not this Dr to anyone!! read more

My experience was AMAZING!! Best neurosurgery team in AZ and possibly the country. Dr. Chang, while a conservative surgeon knew I needed to have a complex case anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at C-5/6 and C-6/7. He got me into his office within 72 hours of seeing my MRI. I even hesitated and got three other specialist consults. All agreed and highly recommended Steve Chang. He was very personable, professional and did not over promise a miracle. The Chandler hospital, I was not a great fan, but when he heard of my issue helped get it rectified. Sue, his MA, is bar none the kindest and most caring I've ever worked with. I'm barely 3 months out and here's my incision. This is the ONLY neurosurgeon I'd ever recommend. read more

Scared the crap out of me. I will spare you the details. We had been monitoring a growth. The latest scan said it changed. So in I go to get the crap scared out of me. While the surgeon is a surgeon, he referred me to a specialist (and apparently one of the few in the region who can do what I need). I'm in recovery now, but it appears to be what they feared. I'll rate the other facility separately. But apparently they got me on track with the specialist I needed. read more

Dr. Changs bedside manners is a 0 Sue office lady if you want to say lady is so rude and unprofessional to say the least. When your going to have surgery and this type you would think their would be some sort of compassion. Being in nursing for over 40 years im honestly informing you to stay clear of this place. I would not recommend Barrow Brain and Spine to anyone. The care provided to me was not care at all; it was the exact opposite. This uncaring organization also has exorbitant fees and dishonest billing practices. I know I am certainly not better off for seeking treatment there. This review is not for any of the medical staff, it's for the office lady / lady that deals with scheduling and related phone calls. Probably the most ignorant and unprofessional person I have ever dealt with, as far as scheduling and communication goes in the medical field. She called me, and when I answered she was having a conversation with someone else and laughing. She then began speaking to me as if I was interrupting. Pretty sad, clearly no compassion or care for what people are going through. I don't trust that she truthfully relayed any of my information to the medical staff as her follow-up information to provide me was the Dr. recommends any neurologist at any facility and to make sure my insurance is accepted. I'd recommend getting rid of this person, as it's going to push people away who would otherwise want to pursue treatment with Barrow. read more

I can't say enough about how disappointed I am about the way Barrow Institute treats people, especially veterans. I need spine surgery in my neck and had the VA do a MRI and X-rays. I have a friend who is retired surgeon recommended Dr (?). Barranco. All I can say is everyone, anyone who is thinking of seeing him STAY AWAY!!!!!!!! I called him three times leaving messages but he or staff NEVER returned the call. I then went down to the office but was told I cannot leave any paperwork for the Dr. . I was trying to leave a copy of the MRI and other paperwork. Told my friend about this and he called the Dr about this. Then was told for a second time to return to the office of Dr(I'm too good for most people) Barranco and drop off all items. For me it is a 25 mile trip one way. Next day we receive a message from the (?) good doctor that they DON'T DO veterans!!!!!!!!??????????? This is the second time I've been insulted for being in the military serving my country. First time was returning from overseas during the VM war. If payment was the question, the VA would pay. If not the VA, I have other insurance and if that was problem, I'd pay for it! All the reviews make sense. The front office staff have no idea how to speak to people. While waiting for my appt I listened to them deal with 1 upset patient and a confused older gentleman. The young lady at the desk has zero idea that she is coming off as rude, sarcastic and dismissive, all while the office manager sits there chatting it up with other staff. I have lower lumbar pain that, episodically, has plagued me more decades. As It worsened I was referred by a doctor I trust implicitly to Barrow Brain and Spine, and specifically Dr. Timothy Sanford. In time it became apparent that i would need regular epidural injections or extensive surgery. I opted for the injections ... I've had three. Because of stents and mesh that I have in the general region, the administration of the epidurals requires exemplary skill, enormous competency and a very steady hand. Dr. Sanford and his support team have delivered all three EVERY SINGLE TIME! The support staff (say "Hi" to Nena for me y'all) are all supportive, able and available. The only thing that would have been better than my experience with Dr. Barrow and his team would have been born without the congenital birth defect that led to this treatment ... oh, and never having played 60 years of basketball in school and schoolyards ... which is not only ancient history but also something I would never change! read more

I was recently referred to Dr Tim Sanford by my physical therapist to get an epidural injection for L4-L5 disc bludge. I contacted my insurance to see if they were covered and they were. But to be on the safe side I called there office and requested a quote of the procedure. I was given a quote of $226.50 for my first injection. They did not mention at all that the initial consultation itself is $650.00 which insurance may cover or may not cover. Turns out after I paid them the $226.50 on the day of the procedure I owe them over $500.00 for the 10 minute brief conversation I had with the doctor and his associate. They are not transparent at all in their practice. The billing office and the medical office are not in sync. Only go there if you are prepared to get legally robbed. Your health is not their concern. Their concern is to clearly take advantage lf our broken medical system. Between your crappy insurance and their shady practices you will regret going here. Btw the one injection I did get did not improve my symptoms. So it was a complete waste of money and my time. read more

My injections were fine and helped that Dr provided however all the conversations are with the PA and, the PA I talked to is a liar, and the medical assistant I talked to was unprofessional. I saw them last year in April, and had to pay out of pockets over $800 between 2 visits and I have yet to receive a bill. I have called twice just needing a copy of the bill. Dr Garrett Is a top Dr. Not only Is Ethically and Morally sound, Listened to me, Critical thinking and open minded to have awareness most Provider's, with exception of the few great ones nowadays. Didn't abandon, dismiss or try to pass me on like The multiple Nuerosurgeon's ,Neurologists, Spine Surgeon's and multiple other Provider's did for the last almost 3 years. Kept advocating, hiring and firing Dismissive, Incompetent, and Negligent Provider's. Left untreated to a point of Severe health decline, disability and more injuries. I'm beyond blessed and grateful for the team of Provider's who take their oath seriously and actually care to provide exceptional patient care. Back in the day I did not have these issues to face. I can imagine that Millions are Suffering, I can attest to not only being subjected to but witnessing atrocities NO one could begin to imagine. Blessed with extensive experience and medical knowledge as not only a disabled first responder but as a patient in the most severely broken Healthcare system, Insurance, government funded run entities. I soak up and continue my advocating as to make the public aware. Educate on patient rights and law's when able. My journey was meant for me to not only see, but share, and continue the fight for Compassionate, Ethical,competent Healthcare so there's no more wrongful deaths, abuse, Harmful and safety negligence. Charged $450 for an initial consultation that lasted 10 minutes and accomplished nothing. Have had ongoing lumbar pain for the last 6 months and was told by the provider to just "do more PT and consider getting a standing desk at work." For the record, I had already indicated that I have been doing PT continuously and that I'm an airline pilot, so clearly listening isn't their forté. Charged an exorbitantly high amount for no solution whatsoever is the reason for this 1-star review. Would strongly recommend looking elsewhere, at least for back pain issues. read more

My mom went to here for lower back pain. What I loved for her was they were kind and explained the situation with her back and did not run to surgery for her. They recommended a pain management place and she is progressing well. I very appreciative of the time and care they provided her. read more

Two stars because Dr. V. Wes Crisp is an excellent doctor. No more than two because office is poorly managed: I had out-patient surgery yesterday. I was told to call one of two numbers if I needed anything. Phone numbers provided went to voicemail, and "emergency" number said this doc wasn't on their list and gave me ANOTHER number; staff there said the number I called was for providers only! In addition to a 102° fever this morning that I was concerned about, the office never sent a prescription that was promised would be sent yesterday for pain. I left a message before noon, and called twice more but it said not to leave multiple messages, and they never returned my call. I drove up to the office at 4pm (they're open until 5, supposedly) only to be told everyone had already left for the day, and I'd have to wait til Monday to talk to someone about it! What?! You drill into my back and provide no pain meds, nor any way to reach anyone?? read more

I had to have a hernia removed from my back. Dr. Almefty was great. They got me in as soon as possible for the surgery and checked on me and answered all of my questions. The surgery went great and I am doing so much better. I had severe leg pain and numbness from the hernia compressing the nerve and they did a great job fixing it. I have no more leg pain and the numbness is almost gone (they said it may take time for the numbness to go away). I am so happy I was referred to this office. read more

I called several times to schedule an appointment; every time I got their voicemail. Their communication skills are lacking. I was a patient to a different location; my profile and information was already in the system. I believed that I did not have to fill out new paperwork. however, when I called (on my way to the clinic) was told that I did. It would not have been a big deal, however, to fill out paperwork a person must arrive 1/2 early. I was not aware of this!!! I arrived to my appointment 3 minutes late, and was told I had to reschedule. The staff lacks sympathy and understanding for people with pain. They say that they are accepting new patients but when I called they said that they didn't accept my insurance and I offered to give them the phone number to call and get prior authorization but they were not interested.
