He brings an incredible level of experience and genuinely seems to care. I have never had any issues with the office, and the blood draws are always smooth and painless. I have referred others to his practice including people worried about chronic issues and Dr. Cohen diagnosed them quickly and accurately reassuring them that they were perfectly healthy. I'm a native New Yorker, and have always done my medical care here. Something is definitely wrong with the medical system and it's presenting itself with the doctors' offices. I've always liked and respected the medical care from Dr. Barry Cohen, but some of the reception is so rude that I can't even describe how condescending and disrespectful they are. I even told the Doctor I thought this: next I know I was let go as a patient. Asked for a ECG with a known cardiac history and was refused. Went in with a mental health problem and was told that psychiatry was unaffordable and to use CBD. Have had a knee problem for a year and was told I needed no imaging. Do not do not go to this guy if you want any sort of decent care Reception was rude and condescending as the cherry on top! Dr. Cohen is fantastic. His practice is a complete mess. I can't get appointments. Can't get responses to emails. Can't get someone on the phone. They messed up prescriptions causing delays in filling them. Finally get Tamara on the phone. Have to drag her name out of her b/c she knows she is awful and unprofessional. She tells me to call back later and gets a wild attitude with me when I explain that I have called dozens of times and no one answers the phone for me, or my pharmacy when they call to straighten out the office's mistake. There is no excuse for an unpleasant and inefficient office staff. Knowing Dr. Cohen I hope he reads these and is ashamed of how his patients feel about the staff and takes steps to remedy it. I found Dr. Cohen to be perfectly pleasant as a human, but as a doctor-- someone I was hoping could give me information and walk me through what was a nerve-wracking situation, I don't feel comfortable recommending him. He was annoyed by my questions, at one point blatantly lied to me, and his office is too busy to return phone calls. I needed blood work done and had been told by a doctor in my family what tests should be run. When I asked him if he could ask the lab to run these tests, he told me "No." I reiterated my question and again he told me essentially that they do their thing. His office said they'd call me in a week. 10 days later I hadn't heard from them so gave a call. I was then informed that they hadn't received my results from the lab. Why? Because Dr. Cohen's office had lost my blood sample and never sent it to the lab. So I went back in. Dr. Cohen quickly took my blood and sent if off. Same story: they said they'd call in a week but didn't so I called them. Lyme Disease can be difficult to identify and there is disagreement about what the disease is and isn't. I am technically negative, but the rate of false negatives with Lyme disease: over 50%. I called his office again. A nurse practitioner (Susanna) was there and gave me the full report. "Well you are technically negative, but there were some positive bands in the blood work..." she spelled it all out for me and explained what she would do if she was in my situation. She was great. He's a cool guy and his office is a very cool and hip place. He's got nice art on the wall. Classic rock plays in the waiting room... He's very down to earth. But if you want responsiveness, professionalism and the feeling that your doctor really cares about you, you can probably do better. read more

He was my doctor for three years. I stopped seeing him because there was paperwork that I needed his office to fill out in order for my insurance to pay a claim, and they (his staff) never took care of it. As soon as I switched to a new doctor, I found out that the medicine he had been prescribing for me all that time was available without a prescription. I don't know just how much money it cost me by having this guy as my doctor, but I urge you not to make the same mistake. read more

Dr. Cohen's practice is located on Crosby Street in SoHo, which is perfect for me because I live in the area, but it's also easy to get to from work. I always come to Spring Primary Care for Covid PCR tests, since I travel so often and his practice has a super easy to use patient portal that lets me access all my test results from my phone. Love the girls at the front desk too! They're always flexible in working around my busy work schedule. read more

Doctors offices can sometimes not be the most ideal place in terms of front desk, but I would say that this office has some of the best staff that I've encountered. Front office staff is terrible. Many times they won't even answer the phone, they literally just pick up and hang up immediately. I've had to call a dozen times in a row before I can get them to actually answer the phone. And it has taken me a week and countless phone calls to get him to handle an issue with a prescription he had called in. If you like getting berated by nurses, this is your place. If not, DON'T GO. I went to see Barry for my annual physical. As I was filling out my paper work, I got to the insurance section, and noticed my insurance was not listed, so, I went up to front desk to inquire. I handed the receptionist my insurance card to double check that I was in-network. She didn't know, so she called over what seemed to be a nurse. The nurse glanced at it and said, "I'm not sure." I expected her to continue and volunteer checking for me, but she didn't. I said, "Okay, well would you mind checking for me? I just want to make sure." I figured this was a pretty reasonable / common question, but boy was I wrong. Evidently annoyed at my question, she said, "You have to call your insurance company." Being a little bit confused, I asked, "Are you not able to check?" I honestly thought this would be something that they'd be able to do quite quickly. Visibly, and audibly mad at me for asking a follow up question, the lady, very tersely, responds, "No", while snapping my insurance card on the counter and sliding it over to me. At this point, I'm starting to feel uncomfortable. There is a few other patients behind me listening and she's being incredibly condescending. I tried one last time, to understand what I needed to do, but she proceeded to be rude, and unhelpful so I decided that it was best that I leave. I said, "I'm feeling uncomfortable, so I'm going to leave" and what happened next, was astonishing. Instead, of apologizing, or at least attempting to help me, this lady shouted, "Okay, good. Bye!" I couldn't believe it. Anyway, long story short here is that this wasn't just the worst experience I've ever had as a patient, but it's the worst experience I've ever had as customer. I will be using another doctor and recommending people do not visit this office because of the experience that I had. read more

What a terrible experience that I keep putting myself through. Luckily, I don't get sick often, so there hasn't been much reason to visit. Dr. Cohen was recommended to me by a coworker because he is so fast, but the first time I visited, I felt completely rushed and unheard and was sent home with a nasal spray for my week-long incapacitating mystery illness that caused me to sleep all day and feel generally miserable. I was given a cursory tap on the face and told that it was nothing more than allergies and any further questions were brushed off. The nasal spray gave me terrible headaches when it completely dried out my sinuses, but taking Claritin did seem to help, so despite feeling somewhat depressed by the whole affair, I was under the impression that he at least knew what he was doing. I have been back multiple times and every time I have felt rushed, but I work in Soho and he is just around the corner. And yes, he is fast. I'm merely depressed after visiting him with whatever ailment I have, feeling completely unheard and still largely miserable. Once, they even lost my records. Most recently, though, I had noticed something quite worrying on a summer Friday morning. I called to ask if there was any way they could squeeze me in and explained the situation. I was tersely told that the doctor was not in and would not be able to see me until Monday. I said I understood and somewhat shakily asked if there was a doctor they could recommend in his absence since Dr. Cohen has been my Primary Care Physician for more than 3 years. The receptionist was extremely rude and suggested "just call(ing) another doctor." Just what I want to do, right? Who doesn't love researching new doctors when they're sick and scared? When I asked if there was any way I could contact him for advice, the receptionist explained that she would have to wait until he called in as she didn't have a way of contacting him. I'm not sure if I would be more angry that that sounded like a bold faced lie, or that he actually could not be contacted in the event of a patient emergency. I don't like to write poor reviews, but Dr. Cohen has been consistently disappointing in his bedside manner, his staff has been less than professional on most visits and definitely never friendly, and the idea that a physician wouldn't have at least one emergency contact number, or a colleague to refer his patients to in his absence is just too much. read more

Dr. Cohen is the best. Anytime I need an appointment, I get one immediately. He is GREAT. I feel so lucky to have met him. I am holistic and he hears me out and we work through treatments together. He is not the doctor that will push meds on you if you do not want them. He cares enough to sit down and talk with you and get you to a place where you are happy and comfortable. Left work at 1:45 for a 2:00 appointment, and my coworkers didn't even realize I was gone. They exclaimed "The shortest Dr. visit ever!" which is good because going to the doctor really isn't that fun and nobody wants to be stuck there longer than they need to. For a doctor's office, the place looks really cool. I almost wanted to hang out there for longer. I am amongst the unfortunate who lack insurance (insert sad face here) but I was hooked up with prescription samples that saved me a ton since I didn't have to go to my favorite pharm Duane Reade. I feel really lucky to have found Dr. Cohen when I had a sinus infection. I should have written this review two years ago, but at least now I can say with confidence that he's a consistently good doctor, as I've been to him enough times. He's always great. Without getting into a personal doctorolgoue about my medical history and why I think he's awesome, here's what you need to know: - I've never had trouble getting an appointment as soon as I needed one. - Dr. Cohen has always taken the time to talk to me, to figure out - beyond my symptoms - what was going on in my life to contribute to my illness/condition/injury whatever. - If you have to call him off hours in an emergency, he promptly calls you back, talks to you, and gives you appropriate advice. - The practice is small enough that you don't simply feel like a number. - He has respect for complimentary medicine, which, if it's your thing, can make you feel comfortable and like there isn't an Eastern v. Western conflict with his approach to treating you. So, in summary, if you're into massive clinics, being treated like a sick cow, and not knowing who your doctor is going to be on any given day, don't go see Dr. Cohen. I and several of my colleagues have been seeing Barry for nearly 15 years. He is an exceptional and pragmatic doctor and an excellent health and wellness advisor with a local downtown neighborhood practice in a cool loft building next to Balthazar. He has recommended some wonderful supplements (tumeric, fish oil, saw palmetto, red yeast rice) in lieu of expensive and non natural pharmaceuticals. He is also technologically up to date with a detailed Apple based computer system which has electronic prescriptions, a tracker of all prescriptions and supplements to make sure there are no adverse combinations and all historical health records. In response to an epidemic of fat, he has also recently started a weight loss advisory clinic (Soho Weight Management) in the same neighborhood. After years of fighting getting back to my optimal weight, I took the plunge and went all in on the SWM dietary program. It has produced dramatic results. My wife is thrilled and I feel better than I have in years. It enhances my workout regimen and focus/stamina at work. I have read some of the paperwork complaints below and cannot really appreciate the issues. I pay my co pays and I don't believe I have ever seen any other bills. I don't have any trouble getting through to the office and find that I can easily get an appointment. read more

I have just started seeing Barry Cohen as my primary doctor this year, with my new insurance plan. He is a solid guy...friendly, a good communicator, and I actually feel like he does care about genuinely helping his patients rather than running them on a conveyor belt. I don't wait hours for appointments, and he has also hooked me up with sample prescriptions, as my insurance doesn't cover drugs. He's open and respectful of me using alternative medicine along with the treatments he has prescribed for me. My wife, who would pay out of pocket inorder to hand pick who she visited for her various doctor's appointments (even though we used to have another insurance) went to see Barry and FINALLY decided she had found a good doctor that was also covered by our plan. When our pediatrician proves himself (over and over) to be basically useless for anything but wellness visits, I have contacted Barry Cohen for advice and second opinions. Totally awesome to have such a resource. Totally recommended. read more

I went in for a simple physical in April 2017 that was covered by my health care, only to receive a bill a month later citing tests and diagnosis' that were never approved or even discussed during my visit. I have been in touch monthly to dispute this sneaky and wrongful charge, and eventually it was admitted by the office and I was assured the charge would be cleared. Cut to now, where I am still calling weekly, each time being assured that this is being taken care of, only to now be called by a debt collection agency saying I owe this and it is negatively affecting my credit. Unfortunately I have to leave a less than stellar review approx 2 years after I started seeing Dr. Cohen as my general physician. I originally found him online and decided to go because I was looking for a new general doctor and he was conveniently located near my job. At that time he had pretty good reviews. Here are my main gripes with the practice: - felt very impersonal and rushed, Dr. Cohen didn't really listen to me or try to make me feel very important or comfortable. - twice at my annual physical the nurse staff could not draw my blood. I have a needle phobia so need extra care and they had to poke me close to 6 times in each arm before giving up. This happened 2 separate years and I have never had such an issue! So that was traumatic. - 3 separate times I called the doctors office because I needed to ask dr. Cohen a question or have him call in a prescription. All 3 times the doctor did NOT call me back! Talk about very poor patient service. - lastly, one time I came in to see dr. Cohen and was told he wasn't available and that I'd have to see the nail practitioner that was on duty. After these experiences I've decided to go elsewhere! Still on my hunt to find a great doctor. read more

Dr. Cohen and his staff cannot be trusted, so please go to them with your eyes wide open. They told us that they could handle our medical insurance billing and repeatedly told us not to worry and that they would handle it. We had significant medical issues, which were not covered by our insurance due to their billing practices. Then they turned the tables on us and accused us of trying to commit fraud. They are clearly not a patient-focused practice. We are also cutting the cord, as seems to be the case with the patients who have posted other reviews on this site. read more

Appointments are honored timely, i.e., I haven't waited more than 5 minutes for the doc to see me after I've arrived. Great office location in SOHO. The office is clean, new and contemporary. I hate the NYC offices that are dank, sickly green or have horrible peeling wallpaper. If you live in the city, you know what I'm talking about, lol. The doctor is very honest and pleasant, which I like. Also, if your insurance doesn't cover something, you will know in advance, which is really helpful! The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Dr. Barry Cohen is a god send. A wonderfully caring, insightful, thorough doctor who doesn't stop digging until he truly uncovers what the problem is. I had an issue about a year ago (He's been my doctor for about eight years.) that was the worst medical situation I've ever been in. I was in panic mode. Other doctors put me on crazy medications and costly treatments. And they just made things get worse. Dr Cohen, however, kept at it. Kept asking questions. Consulted other trusted colleagues. I truly think it kept him up at night. What the hell was going on with me? And then... boom. One simple answer came to him. Details aren't important - at least here - but suffice to say, as soon as his "A-ha!" came to him, his treatment was genius in its simplicity and insightfulness. And I've been symptom free ever since. Plus he's a hell of a nice guy. And is funny. I send pretty much all of my friends and near-friends to him. And they all can't believe how cool he is. Found myself with a bad bad cold that seemed to be getting worse, so I looked up doctors that took my insurance and took a chance on Dr. Cohen. I left a message for him late on a Thursday night, asking for an appointment the next day. I got a call back from his office first thing in the morning to fit me in, so we were already off to a good start. The office was nice, as was the nurse and the receptionist. Dr. Cohen was also nice, quick, and thorough. I felt like he listened to me, was not judgemental at all, and speaking as someone who does not like seeing doctors, this was a pleasant experience. Terrible admin--insurance nightmare. Though I had confirmed that Dr. Cohen is in-network for me to conduct my yearly physical, the office sent the blood work from my physical to an out-of-network laboratory, meaning that none of the costs were covered. I am out of pocket over $500. Further, I had advised Dr Cohen's office of my change in address but they did not advised the labs they had used. As a result, I didn't get the bills and got my credit dinged. read more

The receptionists at the front desk are completely useless. I had made a follow up appointment two weeks in advance and when I show up on the day of the appointment(11am on a Friday), I wait for nearly 25 minutes to be led into a room and then told that they never ordered the vaccine that I needed. In addition, they say that they have no record of my booking the appointment--(yes, I just like showing up at doctors' offices on a friday for fun). In another instance I called to have my receipt faxed so that I may have my insurance reimburse me for it. This would normally take a person 5 minutes at most, it has been 4 days now and still nothing. Even after a follow-up and them promising to do it that day, still nothing. Dr. Cohen is Ok for quick routine things but the office itself is not organized and I would not recommend this place. read more
