I've been a patient of Dr Bungay's for about 6 years now, thanks to finding him and Gotham Medical through their stellar Yelp reviews. All the reviews are accurate! And so I wanted to take the time to pay it forward to other Yelpers by noting that Dr Bungay has now moved his practice to NYU Langone Penn District over on 31st and 9th. I saw him there for the first time today and I have to tell you, I was IMPRESSED. The facility is brand spanking new and in amazing condition, and every staff member I met was friendly and helpful. The new office runs extremely efficiently. I arrived 10 minutes early, checked in at the electronic kiosk, and was welcomed in 2 minutes before my official 2pm appointment time by a nurse who did my intake. Dr Bungay saw me right after, and then another nurse came in to give me a quick and easy tetanus shot after about 5 minutes' wait. This facility also happens to have a phlebotomist onsite, and so I FINALLY got bloodwork done after years of never getting around to making a separate appointment at LabCorp downstairs! An extra bonus -- one of the nurses had already gotten me in "line" for the phlebotomist before I even walked out of Dr Bungay's office, so I had zero minutes of wait time once I walked down the hall to get there. Lab results began to roll into the patient portal later that same night, and I was notified by text message. All very impressive. Dr Bungay himself, of course, remains as gentle and caring of a doctor as he always has been. For anyone potentially worried about the loss of Gotham Med and the transition to the big faceless NYU Langone machine -- you don't need to be. It still feels like the kind and friendly practice that Dr Bungay's old office was, and now maybe even a little shinier! read more

I'm pretty healthy. Sure, I eat too much and I drink too much and I don't run around as much as I should...wait, maybe I'm not that healthy. Anyway, I generally feel pretty good, so I don't go to the doctor. I'm telling you this because I don't really have a ton of experience with doctors (which I'm thankful for). But from my limited experience, Dr. Bungay is one of the good ones. Until last month, I hadn't been to Dr. Bungay for my routine yearly checkup in eight years or so (I somehow missed the other seven years, but I didn't die, so everything's fine), but both times I have gone, he's been about everything you can ask for from a physician. He's obviously knowledgable and certainly compassionate. He's efficient, but thoughtful about answering questions, and once you're in his office you will not feel rushed. It feels more like a casual chat with a friend (that knows medicine) than a sterile doctor's visit. It can be difficult to get an appointment quickly for a non-urgent matter (I assume he just has lots of returning patients and not enough time), but he is available via e-mail, and if you get the flu or something you can always come in and see a nurse practitioner. Simply put, he's a good doctor, and I'm glad he's mine. read more

Crap. I now totally get what others mean when they say that they'll miss Dr. Bungay if they ever leave NYC. Once you've been in his care as a PCP, it's hard to imagine going to anyone else. Sure, the front desk staff might be a little gruff, but I only take that to mean that they're getting their crap taken care of. I certainly know that they obtained all of my deets with a minimum of fuss, easily caught my accidental omission of one signature, and otherwise left me to my own devices. Also, I don't remember the last time I didn't have to wait an additional half-hour to see the doc after my actual appointment time. This joint runs pretty much like clockwork, based on my experience (where, admittedly, n = 1). And Dr. Bungay himself is totally genial, super professional, and quite warm. I mean, anyone who can hold a pleasant conversation and make you feel reasonably comfortable while handling your private bits... well, that takes some seriously dope bedside manner. Bonus: Upon observation of my ring, we have a brief exchange that went something like this... Doc: So, I see you're married? Me: Well, no... engaged to my boyfriend. Doc: Oh, me too! Me: (Giggle*) Which then caused us to delve into a whole other realm of extremely personal, yet pertinent health-related queries for his EMR (presumably). Nope. As far as I'm concerned... it really, truly doesn't get better than this, folks. --------- * This may or may not have actually happened. Dr. Bungay is the BEST doctor in New York City. He has been helpful with every medical issue I've ever brought up, and is extremely professional and caring. I couldn't speak more highly of a doctor and all of his 5 star reviews really speaks to the service he provides. I'm seriously considering never leaving NY (ever never ever) just because of Dr. Bungay. In a large city like this, finding a doctor you trust, you like, who cares, and performs great medicine is like discovering time travel. Doesn't that stupid elevated bed with the sterile crunchy paper and the bright flickering lights make you uncomfortable and vulnerable? Having to talk about the puss or cough or pain under extreme examination makes anyone want to avoid going at all costs. Visits with Doc Bungay are anything but that. His desk with chairs are in one room and the examinations are done in a connecting room. He sits down face to face to chat and talk about what ails you (and with great concern and attentiveness I might add), takes you in to be examined and then back to the cozy room to discuss. Funny how the psychology of removal from the stale and scary changes your experience of going to the doctor. And yes. He's available by email. I find myself quite often sending him a list of my symptoms and finish up by asking if i should come in. Invariably he's concerned. He's always gotten back to me within the hour or two and that's even on Saturdays! I don't know. If I ever do end up leaving NY, I think I might just kidnap him. read more

When I first moved to the city, I transferred my care from my provider in Connecticut to a provider at a community health center that is well established within the LGBT community. Fast forward a few years --- it was time to find a new primary care provider because I'm a full-time paid employee of said community health center. I was beside myself - I didn't even know how or where to begin my search. A half dozen or so of my coworkers recommended that I make an appointment with Dr. Bungay, and the rest is history. I've had my fair share of primary care providers over the years. Let me tell you...Dr. Bungay is simply the best. It's very important to me that my provider [in addition to being brilliant, of course] have impeccable bedside manner. Living in NYC, I suffer through my fair share of meanies throughout the course of the day. The last thing that I need is to experience that via the person that has my physical well being [somewhat] in their hands. Well, Bungay does not disappoint. He is ridiculously nice and super sensitive. AND, patient! I've been on an injectable medication for a little over 4 years, and was looking into changing to a topical gel version of the regimen. Bungay was a big help and SO patient in this arena - totally listening to my desire to change and giving me all of the information that I needed to make an informed choice. If you fall somewhere on the queer spectrum and are looking for a medical provider, look no further. Bungay is EXTREMELY sensitive and affirming to those that identify as LGBQ and/or folks of transgender experience. Confession: I HATE talking on the phone. Pretty much more than I hate anything else in the entire world. Bungay has the option of communicating with him via E-mail. It's the most convenient thing that has ever happened to me. That, and the fact that I can make my appointments MONTHS in advance. I need to see Bungay twice a year, and the office is able to make my next appointment at the conclusion of my last one. I LOVE THAT. I've seen so many providers in the past that don't book appointments that far in advance, and instruct me to call closer to the date to make an appointment. Um, I will never remember to do that. While this may seem like a minute detail, being able to plan my [very hectic] schedule in this way helps me more than I can explain. The office is also GREAT about fitting you in ASAP if you have an urgent issue. The screening nurse, Sue, is basically the nicest woman that I've ever met. She's worked her magic to fit me in the schedule for urgent care twice over the past six months or so, and I can't thank her enough! The physician assistant for the office, Kelly, is also lovely. If you're looking for a new provider, look no further. Bungay and his team make up one of the greatest practices in the city. read more

I've begun to use Yelp exclusively when it comes to finding doctors. So far, I've been successful finding a dermatologist, lady doc, and now a GP. Without going into too much detail, I'll say this: Dr. Bungay is warm, comfortable, thorough and honest. We went through my medical history (and my list self-diagnosed ailments). He assured me I wasn't dying, but did need to cut down on the Franks Red Hot and coffee, and take a pill (both literally and figuratively). He is accessible via email, which I think is fantastic. He seemed hurried, didn't really listen to what I was saying -- I mean, I was in the office for less than ten minutes. I'm kind of surprised at the unanimity of these positive reviews. I didn't know Yelp did doctor ratings. Dr. Bungay is fantastic. Because of a chronic condition, I probably see him more often than most people see their primary care physician. He's warm and welcoming and has always made good referrals for specialists. I've referred several friends to him and would do so again. He isn't one-sided like some doctors about what treatment plan to use, either--sometimes I've found from past experience that a particular medicine works well for me, and he's willing to prescribe it even if it isn't his preferred medicine, or he'll explain why he prefers a different one, and it feels like we're having a conversation about my care rather than just "doctor's orders". Only thing to be aware of (and not Dr. Bungay's fault): the elevator in the building is dreadfully slow. Either arrive five minutes early or be prepared to trudge up five flights of steps. read more

Sadly, my long-term doctor who I loved did not accept my new insurance. I had to get another MD. Dr. Bungay was recommended to me by several of my coworkers. They raved about how nice he is! I googled him and found these reviews on yelp. Wow! a doctor who is not only incredibly nice and attentive BUT who you can email??? Now there's a no-brainer! (If I had a question it would take days to get to actually speak to my existing doctor) I could deal with a cranky receptionist if need be. I went to see Dr. Bungay. He (AND his staff) were lovely. I love Dr. Bungay! He's an extremely great doctor, he's patient, you never feel rushed and he's thorough. I think that's all most people expect in a doctor but he exceeds that. He's also available via email, which from my experience is actually pretty rare ( which is sad since we are in 2010!). He does specialize in the LGBT community since he does HIV and transgender care, which many PCP's do not. A couple more things to note, the elevator in his building is horrible, he's on the 5th floor, so you rely on it ( get there a little early) and Quest Diagnostics is in the basement, so when he sends you to draw blood you're not going far! ( keep in mind they close early so this doesn't apply to appointments past 4:30pm) read more

Without a doubt the best primary care physician I have ever had, and I have lived in Atlanta, D.C., Tucson, and now New York. Every visit I feel like he truly cares, and twice I have had emergencies where he has fit me in the day of with minimal wait. Not only that, he is the only doctor that I have ever had that will correspond with me via email. It makes asking simple questions and getting simple advice that much more easy than calling a switchboard and leaving a message that may or may not be returned within 72 hours. I had to wait over a month for my initial appointment, but it was well worth it. Even if I move out of Chelsea, he'll still be my doctor. Can I give six stars? read more

I never write reviews but after my experience I had to. I had been to Dr. Bungay years ago but moved out of the area so had to change doctors. I moved back to the area and had to get a physical and not sure why but went to a different doctor from a recommendation. Long story short worst mistake I could have made and the doctor didnt get back to me for 6 weeks. Finally when he did he said my blood tests were off and I needed to come in for a follow up. I reached out to Dr. Bungay immediately and he saw me as soon as he could. After sitting with him he assured me all my tests were fine and went through my results with me. I went from being very nervous about my health because of a horrible doctor to being completely assured I was ok. Great guy. Great Bedside manner. I had my first visit with him today and not only did I not have to wait after coming to the office but I was greeted by him and taken into his office before the exam. He was super friendly and seemed very thorough. It was my first visit with him and I feel like I am in good hands. He gave me a thorough exam including palpating my abdomen and went over all the basics even though I appear healthy to make sure I am healthy. Sometimes looks can be deceiving. I looked forward to being able to write this and praise him. He also has been spot on with diagnoses. I had problem today and they fit me in same day. Reception did a fine job with that.
