It was a herculean task to get him to communicate with the other professionals he referred me to. He delayed my treatment and wouldn't even say hello, whenever he had to interact with me (which were rare occasions). I assumed that he didn't realize the difficulty of the case, and knew he was probably not capable of doing the job. He could have just said so, instead of treating me in such an unethical, inhumane and humiliating fashion at the most vulnerable time in my life. His assistant probably noticed and attempted to make up for his rude and unprofessional behavior, and that was very appreciated (she is a sweetheart.) His hygienists are amazing and I am so thankful for them. Do us all a favor and retire, Dr. Margeas! You ARE NOT God's gift to dentistry, as you think you are. I went to God's gift to dentistry, and he is humble, kind, ethical, humane and probably one of the most competent REAL cosmetic dentists in the US ( Dr. Sam Sadati.) However, in this instance, my experience with the staff of Iowa Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in West Des Moines deserves high praise, in this format, for their exceptional standard of customer service. Actually, customer service is an inadequate term. Customer care is more precise. For starters, when I broke my tooth on a popcorn seed, my dentist referred me to an oral surgeon on Ingersoll in Des Moines. And they were ... awful. They are cold. They are rude. They are all about the money. And they don't hide it. I left there $175 poorer (for the privilege of a brief audience with a surgeon who dictated what he would and would not do), and petrified to return. That's when I turned to Iowa Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. The receptionist who answered my call at Iowa Oral was kind, calming, supportive, knowledgable and above all, patient. She (I wish I knew her name) played a key role in guiding me through the process of selecting a surgeon and scheduling the procedure. When that call ended, I felt so much better about my circumstances. The worry was gone. My mini crises would soon be behind me. I met my surgeon for the first time, Dr. Brooke Sunstrum, on the day of my procedure; a tooth extraction. From moment one I knew I was in the right place and in the best possible hands. Dr. Sunstrum, without sounding like a Hallmark greeting card, is the embodiment of sunshine. When she enters a room, she fills it with vivaciousness. She is personality plus. She is caring. She is knowledgable. She is skilled. And she has a bedside manner I've not seen in other medical professionals (with the exception of my dentist, Dr. Chris Cowherd, who is also the best of the best). I have a medical condition (my heart) that makes surgery sedation risky. Dr. Sunstrum, who was aware of this, took every precaution possible. She and her team had me hooked up to heart monitors, machines that took my blood pressure every minute or so, an IV drip and a device that constantly checked my blood oxygen. And ... she was ever present with her stethoscope. Before I went under, I thought back to the words the receptionist had said to me: "I would trust Dr. Sunstrum with my family." The outstanding level of care didn't stop there. When I "came to" in the recovery room, I was met with a team of nurses and doctors who were aware of my return to consciousness the moment I was aware. They could not have been nicer or more attentive, going so far as to tease me when I stretched my arms outward to test my mobility. "Are you seeing things?" a male surgeon jokingly asked, which made me laugh. My procedure was officially behind me. And it felt good to laugh. Much to my amazement, I was pain free. Dr. Sunstrum saw to that. Once home, and hours after surgery, I was slightly uncomfortable at best. I followed Dr. Sunstrum's instructions for pain management and wound care, and am now healed (almost) and without a single complication. Before I sign off, I want to tell you why I wrote this review. The evening of the surgery, I received a call from Dr. Sunstrum. She called to check on me. She wanted to make sure I was okay and did I need anything. I was completely taken aback. I can't tell you how many times I have left word with Unity Point doctors, asking for a conversation, only to be ignored or handed off to a nurse. I was and am beyond appreciative and touched by Dr. Sunstrum's genuine care for her patient (me). And I will do everything I can to convince my dentist to refer his patients to Iowa Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons' star surgeon.

It was an expensive waste of time and money and no pain relief of any kind. No dental work provided except for exam. Never go to this place.

The staff are friendly and take time to explain the purpose of the visit and the dentist meets with you personally afterward to review findings and recommendations. The waiting room doesn't have a TV but there are magazines and toys for little ones in a play corner. The office seems to run on schedule and gets patients in and out quickly.

Im writing this review to simply be a guiding light to other parents that are in a similar…read moresituation we were in with our 2 year old son. Unfortunately my son's 4 front teeth decayed. We brought him in to Dr. Whittemore, who was great and applied a treatment onto his teeth to arrest the decaying process. This treatment was only a temporary fix. As we knew his decay would eventually cause infection. So, time was definitely of the essence. This is where things got tricky, months later. We had an O. R. Appointment scheduled for surgery with dr whitmore to remove or put caps on his teeth (if the decay hadnt gone to his roots). Unfortunately i didnt answer my phone a couple times they called (my son had pneumonia in the hospital) and our spot was given to another child who needed an OR surgery. Basically; the only other OR surgery availability that Dr whitmore had was in February of 2022. This was way too far out and we didnt have that time so Dr Whittemore was extremely adamant on pulling out his four teeth IN his dentist office only using novacane. They were going to wrap him up in a "burrito" and pull the four teeth out. This sounded traumatic and i was very hesitant but yet everyone in that office was pressuring me to QUICKLY get this done. I definitely appreciated DrWhittemore's push to prevent infection. But In the back of my head, i kept asking myself "why cant he just call around to other dentists he knew that DID have OR time." Especially in our case when our appt was given to someone else.. I figured that was my job. And accepted that. Obviously dr whitmore pulls a lot of teeth and he felt our son could of handled this process. But i felt it was too much, and luckily, i spoke to a relative anesthesiologist about this in office event and he strongly advised against it bec novacane was painful in itself and it was just too traumatic for four teeth. It was better to do it in a hospital. So my relative gave me the name of a pediatric dentist who frequents the Hospital he works at often. Called and met this dentist, who said he believed we did have a little time (it wasnt as urgent as Whitmore's opinion). We got an appt in the OR for October. What's bothersome to me, is when we called to tell Whittemore's office that we were not going to go through with the in office pulling of teeth, they said they were worried about our son and they wanted to refer us to (the same dentist we just made an appt with!!!). Their concern was way too late. Again, They were wanting to pull my sons teeth out a long while before this call. They never even offered "maybe this dental place can do it". Again, I had been stalling with whitmores office bec it didnt feel right to me. So their concern felt upsetting. The best thing about this story and the thing i want to emphasize is that my son's roots werent decayed at all. This dentist was able to give my son caps. So he didnt have to be front of mouth toothless for the next 6 years of his life. This wouldnt of been possible had Dr. Whitmore simply pulled them out in his office. I also want to mention that in-office sedation can be dangerous too. Dr whitmore never offered that, but many dentists do. So, moral to the story- if it doesnt feel right to you, dont do it and look around. Thank god my relative helped get me this appt with this dentist.
