Cute tasting room in downtown Half Moon Bay. They were previously located further down the block tucked away in a little courtyard, but now they're on the main strip front and center! They have plenty of indoor seating as well as a few tables outside. They had a few different tasting flight options when we went, we opened for one that was all white and one that was all red. We ordered at our table and the wines were brought out to us on cute little slate serving boards. Each wine came in a mini mason jar so that you could pour it in your glass at your own pace when you were ready. Of course everyone's wine preferences are different, but I personally didn't love any of the wines I tasted. I ultimately I preferred the whites over the reds. As we were checking out though, I noticed they had a rosé and asked for a taste, I'm so happy I did because it was fabulous! I ended up taking a bottle of that to go. We stopped in to this cute little tasting room on a lazy afternoon in Half Moon Bay. The gentleman behind the counter welcomed us right away and invited us to sit down. He was on his way out, but still took time to tell us a bit about the wines and take our order. We decided to both enjoy the Bold Reds tasting...three generous pours for $15. Melissa took over and poured our wines - Voyage Blend, Odyssey Blend and Syrah. The tasting is presented in little mason jars on a tasting board - cute presentation. Melissa was great. She was able to answer all our questions and provide insight into the wines and winery. She even offered a bonus pour of another wine not on the tasting which she happened to have open. I believe it was a Petite Syrah, but I could be mistaken. All of the wines were quite nice. We ended up staying for a glass and taking a couple bottles with. Stopped in at this wine bar in downtown Half Moon Bay. I tried a flight of Pinot Noir, while my husband tried a red blend flight. The host was friendly and attentive. I loved the Pinot flight, while my other half was a little less enthused with his selection. The cost of a flight was pretty reasonable, about $15. On a trip over to Half Moon Bay this weekend we ended up dropping into Barterra Winery. Though the small staff was friendly, I did not like two of the three wines I tried of the wine flight, which was very unusual for me. After ordering a sparkling and being given a Brut, having expected a Roux, it seemed to be mostly downhill from there. Three pours for $15 was already on the steep side (apparently it used to be four?), but the Moscato was bland, and while the final red was enjoyable I would have much rather purchased a glass of Prosecco retail for $12 at a bar and enjoyed that since I'm not normally a red person. The seating must be nice in fair weather, but it was a little chilly to be completely comfortable during an overcast day which added to the not-steller experience. We wanted to sit together and Barterra is "cozy" inside with very very limited seating. Having really enjoyed our experience at Half Moon Bay Wine & Cheese Company down the way (which also served food) Barterra just didn't compare. I probably wouldn't be back, but the honey enjoyed his glasses, so three stars. read more

Made reservations on a Saturday for our party to go wine tasting. When we arrived a great table with my name on it was set aside by the windows. The waiter came over and explained the various flights and wines to us. We all choose various flights which were served in the cutest carafes. Truly a great time and we purchased bottles to go. The wine tasting menu is suitable for all palettes and affordable. Teresa and Chris were fabulous, very friendly and knowledgeable of the wines and local attractions. This was our first visit to Half Moon Bay and Teresa and Chris made is memorable. The tasting room is quite pleasant, with open doors and windows which allows plenty of ventilation and fresh air. I enjoyed my trip to Barterra, I really did, but it also could have been better. We stopped by late on a weekend for some Half Moon Bay wine tasting. A tasting of 3 wines is $15. We ended up tasting 6 wines from their menu of whites, reds, and dessert wines-- the Elegancia (dessert wine) was good and we ended up taking home a bottle of the 2015 Sangiovese Reserve, but we weren't super wow-ed by any of the other wines. There was a lovely little older woman who was helping us and another pair with their tastings and while she was kind, she also wasn't the most attentive. She would ask us which wine we wanted next, pour that one, and then walk away to go check on the other pair. Some people may enjoy this more hands-off approach to wine tasting, but I tend to prefer the tastings where the person helping you chats more with you about the wine or the history of the winery. I wanted more engagement from our hostess and I was sad that that component of the tasting was lacking. There are also olive oil tastings at Barterry, which I was really excited about because I love olive oil. They have a decent selection, though upkeep of the tasting area was somewhat wanting. Look for the disposable paper cups to pour the olive oil into-- don't use the tin cups that look like they've been used already because that's probably not sanitary. Some of the bottles that were available for tasting looked pretty old, and are only capped with the spout lids, so I'm not sure how "fresh" those olive oils were. They also only have a few of each type of olive oil in stock. Later in our visit, we were joined by an older gentleman who helped to process our purchases who was also pretty nice. tl;dr: Barterra is a very cozy little place for wine tasting in Half Moon Bay, and not a bad option overall, but if you're looking for more engagement with your tasting experience, depending on who is helping you with your tasting, you may find yourself without explanation for many of your wines. read more

Barterra Winery was a toss-up with the other option on Main St., and we opted to go here because they had outdoor seating. At $15 a glass, I found the price to be a bit steep. A tasting of 3 wines was also $15, or you can buy a bottle and cork it afterward to take home; we chose door #3. Barterra's outdoor garden is lovely and pooch-friendly! We stopped in here during a quick stop in Half Moon Bay following the signs that said "wine tasting." This spot was so so cute. The people working at the round bar (I believe they were the owners) were the nicest people and were so helpful with all of our questions. We opted to sip our tasting in the outdoor courtyard area which was perfectly shaded on a warm day. We just had to pop in to the tasting room to get our next taste which was only step away. The wine was tasty and we enjoyed picking out what bottle we wanted to take home. Though they were busy, they were still attentive to each group there. A bit pricy for tasting ($15/four) but as we were enjoying a bottle of their pinot noir at a dinner party last weekend, we decided that we needed to return sometime soon so we could pick up a whole case. The tasting was a nice experience with complimentary snacks, olive oil tastings, and friendly staff who didn't rush us even though we arrived close to their closing time. They encouraged us to enjoy our wine outside in their patio area and one of our tasting fees was waived since we purchased a bottle. Discovered Barterra Winery through a zozi deal for a wine tasting with chocolates! I called to make a reservation but was told that a reservation wasn't required. We arrived at 5:20pm on a Saturday night. It was very quiet in the little shop and no one was around so we waited a few minutes. Right when we decided to leave a lady finally came out she said that their last pour was at 5pm, even though they close at 6pm. She almost didn't want to serve us but we asked her if she'd be able to make an exception since we were from out of town and it was my boyfriend's birthday. After a bit of hesitation she caved and allowed us to do a tasting, however, there were no chocolates though :( At least we each had four tastings and she let us choose between red and white. The wines were pretty good and her pours pretty decent. She gave a short explanation of each wine we tried and answered questions we gave her so it really wasn't all that bad. There were no chocolates but there were crackers and almonds. In the end, we bought a bottle of sparkling wine to make up for making her pour after 5:30pm. We might come back if we're in the area again to give them a second chance but maybe we'll try to come earlier in the day as opposed to at the end, when most people would be kind of tired and ready to go home. read more

However, to be frank, I have become rather spoiled by the Santa Cruz Mountains, Napa, and Sonoma varieties. It was a nice experience, but we won't return. read more

Stumbled upon this family owned winery via yelp. My girlfriends and I were looking for a midweek wine tasting girls day out that's not too far from San Francisco. Very cute intimate place. Mary and Mary - they are very kind and sweet. They were very informative about the wine we were tasting, and even let us open a bottle of wine for free tasting.
