I do not like giving 1 star reviews, especially to places that have good ratings. However, in this case, I simply would like to share my experience, which was the worst wine tasting experience. I purchased a Zozi deal a few months back, which clearly states in its rules that each person receives "One purchase equals wine tastings for two - a total of four wines for each person." And that it would be paired with chocolates and etc. So, the time to use this deal was running out and I decided to take my boyfriend here after spending the afternoon bike riding in HMB. As we approached the bar area where the owners stood talking to another couple who were tasting, I inquired whether or not they will be accepting our deal and handed over the paper. One of the owners scoffed at us, looked at the coupon and mumbled something along the lines of wine tastings never expiring. I was happy to hear that. He then shuffled the paper over to another person, saying he cannot do this and does not know how to deal with it. The other person took over. She was very unfriendly, nearly snobby and condescending. She told us that we get only 2 wine tastings each (even though the deal clearly says four tastings each!) and both of the wines somehow ended up being reds. We were offered some chocolate to pick out of the box. Then, she proceeded to pour the wine. This was the most ridiculous part of the experience. It was about 1/8 of a glass which did not even come down to being 2 full sips. For the second wine, same story. If you do not like to honor these deal, then maybe it is not a good idea for this business to put up deals on websites and encourage customers to make a trip out there for such a disappointment. We were treated like this because we were "not paying" customers, or at least that was the attitude they showed towards us. Nobody explained the wine or talked to us. It was literally pour 2 drops and walk away to the "paying customers" who were wine tasting and had full glasses and they were chatting away with them. I DID pay for the deal and did not get my money's worth. There is more that I could say about this place, but I do not want to waste anymore of my time on this. POOR SERVICE AND BAD ATTITUDE. Next time, I will take my business somewhere else. I do not recommend coming here. read more

Bad attitude. Poor service. The couple that owns the place looked cute when we first went in, but was very unfriendly, unhelpful, and was rude when I said I didn't care for one of the wines. One even started to talk about us as we were leaving to other customers. Just because one person doesn't care for your wine does not give you the right to be rude and condescending. The wines were all mediocre at best. Some tasted like grape juice. I will not return here and do not suggest it to anyone visiting the area. Bad customer service. read more

Barterra is a quaint wine-tasting room along the main street. The staff is friendly and they know their stuff when it comes to wine. The standard wine tasting allows you to sample three wines, but the owner let me try an additional port, and it was really good! The best part had to be that I was served almonds, chocolate, and biscotti during the tasting. The biscotti were so good that we ended up buying a bag of them to take home. The downside to this tasting room is that the price is a bit steep for only getting to sample three wines during the tasting. Then again, we had just come from La Nebbia where it's $10 for 10. Regardless, it was fun to try this place out since we had never been here before. read more

Super cute little family owned tasting room. The old couple are super cute. The wines are pretty good and little different - I liked the chardonnay and primativo. Wine tasting here is $10 for four samples. The tasting room is really cute, and in addition to wine, you can also sample different varieties of olive oil (not my thing, but maybe it's yours?) and biscotti or other treats. The lady serving us on our last visit (Mary I think) was very nice and helpful. The wines are pretty good as well. I always stick to the whites and my husband does the reds....I definitely recommend the 2008 Chardonnay and the Viognier. Apparently the Primitivo is perfect for red drinkers who like a lot of fruit. We've never bought a bottle of anything here but we do stop in from time to time just to try something different. read more

Bart and Mary Colucci's wine tasting room, art gallery and charming courtyard is one of Half Moon Bay's hidden gems for intimate weddings and small gatherings. If you haven't heard this yet, but you're looking for a pretty venue that won't gouge you, ignore you or treat you like another wedding sucker (sorry, but I've grown cynical seeing how hotels and restaurants treat brides), drop everything and pop down to Barterra for a tour and tasting. It's a gorgeous little spot. You won't be disappointed. My groom and I are so happy with the reception we held there last Saturday. Our guests were delighted with the elegant, relaxed atmosphere, the delicious wine and the personal service of the owners' family. Mary embraced us like a member of her own clan. Bart oversaw the whole thing like a benevolent Italian prince, and daughter Terri was making sure we had little things we or our caterer didn't bring. Barterra isn't set up for turn-key zillion-dollar-a-head weddings. But this is a huge advantage. Mary will guide you if you need help finding local vendors, but she assumes you've got your own ideas, and she and Bart are there to quietly support you as you do the organizing. THIS is how to achieve a high quality small reception on a budget. In exchange for my selecting a caterer, flowers etc., I got a full-on personal-touch venue with an atmosphere that can't be beat. I'll be looking for any excuse to host another event there. We had rain, but we tented a small portion of the courtyard and it worked great. Two large rooms flowed into the courtyard, and people moved effortlessly through the spaces - inside and out. Happy couple, happy guests. We'll be back to host our company events too. The Colucci family are a class act. If hotel "events managers" strike you as annoying, and their services overpriced or impersonal... do not pass Go. Get thee to Barterra! Great Find! I was pleasantly surprised about this little place and didn't expect to walk out having purchased 2 bottles of wine, I left a very happy customer. The Colucci Family really make you feel comfortable when you walk into this place. They have a wonderful little courtyard where you can purchase a glass of wine, order a food plate where they will put something together for you, and than sit outside and enjoy your wine in peace and quiet. It is very pleasant, you can also walk around their little art gallery attached to their tasting room. Both Bart and Mary are very knowledgeable about their wine and the grapes that they use. They have some very unique blends and for an amateur like myself they are great at steering me into a direction to find something I will enjoy. I ended up purchasing both a bottle of the 2009 Vermentino - this was something I had never tasted before and I really enjoyed it, and the 2007 Primativo - this was an excellent tasting red wine. These are 2 bottles that I will be pulling out for a special occasion dinner at home for my wife and I or when we have some special guests over. In their tasting room they also have Olive Oil tasting! HELLO, how cool is that. If they had Balsamic Vinegar tasting I would have officially died and gone to heaven at that point. Their Oils are great and original, who would have thought about actually pressing the ingredients in with the olives at the press, that is awesome. I seriously could have bought one of each, but my favorites where the basil, garlic, jalapeno (which has a bite), and the lemon. I'm surprised they didn't kick me out of the tasting station since I could have cleaned them out of bread samples, lol. They had a large selection at Barterra, but it was $15 for 3 small tastings. :( They didn't offer us to revisit any either. :( Nothing special, but they did give almonds and chocolate. read more

This place is great!! I am in the wine business and have tasted wines from the other winery down there - nebbia, and there is no comparison. Barterra - Bart is the owners name and he's right there helping people out. He's an older gentleman with a great personality. He makes a Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel, and an outstanding Cabernet. He makes all of his wine from Napa and Russian River grapes so the wines are delicious and well made. But the cab is really good and pretty cheap for a napa cab of the same quality. i bought a few bottles and bought some of his olive oil also - really beautiful and delicate olive oils. read more

The wine was great (we bought a bottle of 2006 Cab Reserve), but Bart is the one that really made our experience wonderful! He had so many interesting stories to share that we didn't want to leave! The best part- he doesn't charge you to taste, he simply asks that you donate to the charity he's chosen for that quarter (this quarter it is going toward children in Africa). The store is small, so I wouldn't go with a large group, but if you ever find yourself strolling Main Street it is a great place to drop by. read more

4.5. Stopped in to do some wine tasting during a weekend getaway in Half Moon Bay and was pleasantly surprised. Very cute tasting room and patio in downtown HMB. I believe the woman who poured for us was named Mary (or perhaps that was the owner's name) and she was very nice and we chatted a bit. $15 tasting fee which gets waived if you purchase 2 bottles. The tasting includes 4 tastes of your choice. I tried the 2010 Chardonnay ($45/bottle) and it was decent. Then tried the 2007 Primativo (a Zin,$38/bottle) and it was delicious. My boyfriend tried the 2006 New Departure Pinot Noir ($30/bottle) which was equally tasty. We also tried some of their award-winning cabs, which, while excellent, were quite expensive and out of our price range. We decided on a bottle of the Primativo and a bottle of the Pinot. They also have some gourmet food items for sale, including flavored olive oils they had out for sampling. We bought a bottle of the garlic oil (also delicious were the basil, rosemary, and jalapeno oils). The only reason why this is 4.5 and not a full 5 stars is that only one of the tasting fees was waived even though we bought two bottles of wine and a bottle of olive oil. When my boyfriend and I asked how much the tasting fee was upon walking in and were told "$15 each but it's waived if you buy 2 bottles," I thought that meant that if the two of us bought 2 bottles collectively, both tasting fees would be waived. That's what has happened at every other winery I've been to where just the two of us are tasting. Minor annoyance. BUT, Yelp has a $15 for $25 deal for this place (and you can only use this once, so don't purchase it multiple times unless you plan on returning) so this nearly canceled out the second tasting fee anyway. Both women were very nice and fun to chat with and after we paid the owner poured us each a small glass of champagne (the remnant's of an open bottle) since it was my boyfriend's 30th birthday. It was a nice gesture. Overall it was a great experience and I highly recommend a visit if you're in HMB. read more

Such a cute tasting room. The owners two older couple are sweet. Its near the downtown part of half moon bay. They have the cutest and I mean cutest court room area outside. The husband and wife run this place. Very sweet couple. I love the Whites, their Ruby Cabernet and their desert wine is good. If you like chocolate you will love their desert wine. An absolute gem of a find. First, I'm not exactly a wine connoisseur, mostly because I find wines bitter and painful to drink. That is, until I found this place, and learned that there can indeed be wine that is neither bitter nor painful to drink. Their most expensive tasting (the $25 reserve red wine tasting) had the best red wines I'd ever had, including their award winning 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2012 Pinot Noir, as well as their 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon (not award winning, but still amazing). They were sweet, rich, sat on the palate nicely afterwards, and had just about zero burn. As the owner explained to us, this is apparently because they use juice pressed from grapes by a bladder, as opposed to mashed on by machines which grind up the seeds and give (cheap) wine that horrible bitter taste. We also had their dessert wine tasting, which included the elegancia port (amazing), chocolate dessert wine (who knew you could combine two amazing things in one?), and the lua laranja (a bit sweet for me, but still quite good, especially with the biscotti they provide). The dessert wine tasting was a little cheaper ($20) and also came with a great passion fruit licorice candy concoction. All this was served in an adorable storefront, with a courtyard outside, or a little sunroom inside, for you to enjoy your tasting in. They also sell a smorgasbord of olive oils, crackers, and artisan chocolates, along with their fabulous wines. Their most expensive bottle was about $125 (the 2009 Cabernet), and is easily just as good, if not better (and cheaper) than other pricier wines I've had. Not only are the wines here amazing, the owners are lovely: we had a great time chatting with him and learning about his wine making process, and you could tell he was very proud of what he's produced, as well as the adorable store he's put together. He also gave us extra tastings of some of his best wines, and I'm pretty sure wound up undercharging us (despite us trying to correct him). With the combination of excellent wine at reasonable prices, and a homey but elegant atmosphere, this winery is definitely a place I'll be returning to the next time I'm in town. read more

A really great place to wine tasting! I read a lot of good reviews about this place, so I thought to myself "hmm, I have to check this out". So my girlfriend and I visited this place after lunch and I must say that it was exactly the way I hoped for! When we walked in, of course we were carded, but I really appreciated how the hostess was humble in her apology and made sure we weren't offended (which we weren't, because we are really young looking for our age, blame it on the Asian-ness). We tried five wines: 1) Sparkling wine 2) ....I don't remember, but it was a white wine! 3) Primativo 4) Cabernet-Sauvignon 5) Dessert Wine (I actually focused more on the truffle, if anything at this point) Each wine tasted very good, and I can tell that this winery does a very good job in fostering their products. The hostess was very kind and knowledgeable about her wines. She even encouraged us to relax and to sit outside in the beautiful courtyard, or take a stroll around their art gallery to enjoy the wine a bit more. We really appreciated that and what was more interesting was at the end of the tasting, she introduced us to flavored olive oils, which I tried the Jalapeno flavored -- WOW! that's all i have to say, it was so awesome that I even bought a bottle for my mom and dad. It is a small but very nice to have an outside patio and a inside terrace . also features a gallery where one can appreciate art while sipping wine. The owners Mary and Bart makes your wine tasting a memorable experience, the best customer service full of anecdotes. I chose the $25 tasting of high end wines, and I wasn't disappointed. I bought a 1/2 bottle of 2010 Cabernet Reserve that was wonderful. After arriving at home in Wisconsin I found that they had wrapped up the wrong wine. They went above and beyond to rectify the situation by sending me a full bottle of the 2010 Reserve at no charge. Cute little tasting place we happened upon by accident. The ladies that run the place are bonafide locals who also helped us select the perfect place for lunch. We really enjoyed the Barts Red, and I surprisingly I also liked the Sangiovese and Pinot. The Elegancio Port is lovely - not cloyingly sweet like some, and the bottle is beautiful. Make sure you try the liqourice pairings! And if you are a fan of Moonstruck chocolates from Portland you will find a wide selection and some you may not have seen before! The courtyard patio is cute, and a nice place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. Or for your husband to park himself with your dog and young child since they aren't allowed inside. Plus there is a lovely jewelry/accessories store in the courtyard with beautiful pieces that are right priced. Felt like we were on holiday for our short day trip to HMB. read more
