Ah my little neighborhood store. This place is great if you need a quick snack, some soda, even random household items. They literally have almost anything you need, including produce and meat (although I can't attest to the quality). There's a deli counter, excellent beer and wine selection, etc. The prices are a little high, but you are paying for the convenience after all. Owner is super friendly, and if he doesn't have something you need or want in stock he'll get it for you. They also make an excellent gyro. Thumbs up! read more

The perfect neighborhood grocery store. I live nearby and whenever I need anything -- milk, flour, a breakfast taco, detergent, any random household item -- they have it! Their selection is solid (good variety of many items; they offer organic and local brands), and the quality is high. The store is clean and friendly. The prices are reasonable. The hours are great (open early and late). I love the people who run the store. They are professional, helpful, and friendly. Decent selection of goods when you're in the neighborhood and need something quick. This is, hands down, my favorite convenience store in Austin. Here's there scoop: The wine section in this place is almost alarmingly diverse. There's a whole little cubby-room area that just holds their wines. Pretty fkn sweet. The beer selection is decent, but not quite as plentiful. The deli offers hot sandwiches and pizzas. From what I've been told, the sandwiches are mostly just bread with mayo and not worth it. The pizza ain't bad for quickie convenience store pizza. The dolmas are also totally edible. Fresh produce is available, but don't have unreasonable expectations. There's not an organic or local section, and a bunch of that shit is inevitably bruised. That's what you get from a convenience store, and just be happy that you can grab an avocado or tomato at the last minute because you forgot at the grocery store. Vegan chocolate! As a vegan, this is something that I care about. Also lots of sorta fancy drinks, a la flavored kombuchas, a few brands and flavors of coconut water, some coffees and teas, and some Mexican sodas. Canned goods! Need 'em? They got 'em! But for whatever reason, whenever I go in there to grab chickpeas to throw together a last minute batch of hummus, they're out. When I go in to buy chocolate/beer/anything else, the shelves are stocked with chickpeas. I suspect this could be some sort of Hummus Conspiracy against me... There's a pretty good selection of frozen Amy's entrees, frozen pizzas, and other on-the-go frozen options. Also a few bags of frozen veggies and the gamut of dairy products. Plus bacon. Cigarettes! Cigarettes to your heart's content! Including, but not limited to American Spirit blues, yellows, light green, dark green, and black; Skydancer black and gold; Smokin' Joes; etc. The dudes who work at Barton Hills Market are pretty great. Me and my boyfriend have been long time customers of this place until recently because the owners have decided to nickel and dime the crap out of their customers. I'll give you a great example: we go in to buy some water. Easy enough right? Ok we see the "value pack" of 32 bottles of Ozarka water. (If there are any prices around, they're usually put in a place that is marked for another item or just flat out wrong. We have had issues with their pricing falsely for items that are marked.) Now, we're friendly people, we've been coming here for a year and we recognize the family members that work there and say hello and chat.. And then when we get to the counter, the cashier says its $8.99 for the entire pack! We asked " Why so expensive? I can get this for less than $5 at any gas station." We were shocked at how aggressive the cashier became and told us the reason why it's so expensive is because he charged us per bottle!!! (Apparently this is the BS they're going for this time) This is pre-packaged Ozarka water people!! Nothing special. So we took the water, but when we said weren't ever coming back, because this is such a rip off, amongst other times we've been ripped off and the attitude we were getting, the cashier could really care less because this place is a cash cow. People are going to keep buying seriously over priced items that aren't marked properly and burn money all for the spirit of Austin's "let's support the private businesses". I get that, and I'm all about that too, but I'm not going to let a private business rob me stupid anymore just for "convenience". read more

BHM is a great neighborhood store. They offer fresh deli meats and prepared foods. I love their Gyro's, always very fresh and I can call ahead and have it ready and waiting by the time I get there. ...haven't seen a better bodega since brooklyn. They offer everything you need if you are down at the pool, and want lunch, or live in the neighborhood and need a few essentials. By essentials, i mean an array of dry/frozen packaged foods, a great deli & of course a full selection of beer & wine. There seem to always be great prices on middle-eastern fare: hummus, heat & serve indian food, but other than that prices are of course higher than the regular grocery. Only thing that would make it completely perfect is if they sold Prosecco & had a full fruit/veggie stand. read more

My initial review was 7 years ago. I thought it was time to reaffirm my affection for this place. I stop here a couple of mornings a week to get breakfast tacos or cream & sugar for the lab coffee area. I stop on the way home to get some essential food items (including beer or wine). I still do my big grocery shopping at Whole Foods, but you can't beat Barton Hills Market for convenience and reasonable prices. Like most of their customers, I live in one of the nearby apartment complexes. When I moved in, the rental manager was sure to tell me about it. "Hey, she said. "Make sure you check out the little Barton Hills Market down the street if you need something, before you get in your car and drive." I'm so grateful she did that; it might have been months before I went in, and I have saved myself SO MANY drives to the grocery store. They carry a good variety of things, including some organic dairy. I haven't had reason to buy their meat, but it always looks fresh and tasty in the case, not sad like you might expect in such a small store. Mostly, I go there for wine and ice cream, the two things I am prone to deciding I want at 10 o'clock at night when other stores are closed and I'm *TIRED*. I just walk half a block, pick up a reasonable bottle of wine and a pint of Ben & Jerry's, and walk home. The convenience and selection aside, I have *never* gone in there and not had the staff be friendly to me. They're quick, courteous, and cheerful, and I'm really glad to have their business in my neighborhood. read more

I love BHM! I live very close to it and several other markets but always go here first. The owner and employees are wonderful. As is their selection. I can always get what I need whether its a quick snack for the kids aft school or a quick carton of organic eggs or milk. Great selection of good for you food and bad for you food! This is the best convenient store I have ever been to. The staff is great, especially this guy named Rocky. He's a really chill dude.

This is the best lil supermarket in town and the coolest thing about being in the Barton Hills hood. First, the staff is really nice, with a great sense of humor (experts in sarcastic wit). Next, they have an enormous wine section, not to mention fresh fruit n veggies, steaks, fresh pasta (luv the gulash, only $5 and big enoug for 2), fresh pizza, sandwiches, frozen food and more. I don't know how they have such an extensive variety in such a small building. Somehow it's larger on the inside, than on the outside. For instance, I counted 9 different brands of granola cereal alone and ALL 5 varieties of Honey Bunches of Oats! Ya can't find that at HEB. When I've ever needed anything on the fly; a phone charger, cat food, margerita mix, shades, a wine opener, Western Union or to rent a movie, Barton Hills Market has always come through for me - Thanks guys. read more
