We stopped in Sutherlin, OR, for gas on our way to Portland . We had intended to go to McDonald's…read more But, across the parking lot from McDonald's, we saw this little place. From the outside it doesn't look like much but we were surprised that when we went in to check it out, we found that they actually have a small dining room with tables and chairs. There is a counter where you enter your order and sandwiches pay for your food. The menu is surprisingly extensive. They have both hot and cold sandwiches along with some hot entrées . I had a cold pastrami sandwich and it was very good. I liked it better than most supermarket sandwich counters and better than Subway sandwiches. My wife had a cup of Vegetable Barley Soup and Onion Rings. All in all, it was pretty good. It was far better than we expected. This is a good lesson where we should not judge a book by its cover.

I've seen a lot of reviews mentioning their high prices but you got to remember they're offering convenience and they're the only game in town for now. You can get most anything you need here and they have a meat section, deli section and bakery. They also have premade sandwiches that are pretty tasty. Parking is no problem they have big lots. The store is clean, well-organized, and has decent prices; its shelves offer organic local-grown and fair-trade items for the concerned shopper. Books, juices, gluten-free foods and other items can be found throughout the shop too. I was personally impressed with the honey and organic vinegar selections. A brief conversation with the owners is enough to know that they're outgoing and friendly people with a great business plan; they project strength and fortitude, tempered with earthy personalities that will surely be mirrored by their business. I'm confident the store will succeed because this ethereal little shop will unquestionably fill a much needed demand for the people of Oakland, Sutherlin, and the surrounding rural areas. Once the store realizes it potential the elusive fifth star will be awarded. I wasn't sure how bad it would be after reading others' reviews, but once again, my personal experience was pleasant and I left happy. I headed toward the entrance, hoping they would have a smaller size cart or hand held basket, but unfortunately I could not locate anything besides their huge carts. Once I entered, I asked an employee if they had any other options. Katy, as her name tag read, was very friendly, but said that unfortunately they do not. I told her I was just in the market for honey, so she cheerfully pulled out a map, located the honey, and handed it to me. The hunt was on. On my way, with my trusty treasure map, I walked past the promotional wall, and was greeted into the produce section. The avocados looked like a good find and ready to eat. The space was clean and spread out. I took my time meandering through the store and was impressed with WinCo's bulk food section. What a great idea to use multiple aisles for bulk food! It cuts down on waste and provides its patrons with fresh and customized amounts of healthy food, plus some sweet treats. I finally found myself in front of their honey section and was happy with my choice, even though they promoted their generic store brand in a primo spot and the local west coast small business section was located on the bottom shelf in small batches. My cashier, Tracci, was upbeat and friendly. I told her how great and helpful Katy was in my search for honey, but how disappointed I was with WinCo for not providing baskets for small purchases. She agreed that Katy was great and she said she even noted Katy's great work ethic on the employee board. Tracci's statement made me like WinCo even more because positive employee outreach and company unity is a Win Win. I'm still disappointed in the lack of hand held baskets, but I could have easily brought in one of my own reusable bags to carry my purchase in and out of the store, just the same. As you can see on my receipt, their prices seem fair, at least to me... but I wasn't in the market for a full fledged grocery run either. The store itself was spacious and clean with well stocked shelves. The other patrons present seemed comfortable and at ease, taking their time.
