My experience with Basecamper mirrors was not a good one. In particular: 1) After taking delivery of the van and starting our trip, the rooftop tent ripped off the top of the van while driving down I-15 at 80MPH. After pulling over and calling the owner, Matt, he pointed me to an item in the list of things he had supposedly trained me on, marked in the document as "need to know." 2) I never received any instruction to drive the van at 65MPH, which is significantly under the speed limit. I did receive training on how to set up and take down the tent, but nothing else regarding speed. That is indicated in the section I initialed, however I never received any verbal training or instruction to drive that slowly. I have driven with multiple roof racks, ski racks, etc. and have never been aware of a speed limit restriction, certainly not one that is 10-15MPH under the legal speed limit. Matt did tell me that he was "tired" from having to drive to Capitol Reef the previous day to deal with another vehicle issue related to his fleet. 3) From the damage, it appears that the right rail failed, in particular the right front attachment to the top of the van, a Yakima roof rail. It appears to have completely torn off from the van, causing the rail to snap and the tent to fly off. In addition, it seems that the tent was in no way secured to the two rails perpendicular to the Yakima bars, as there were no bolts of any kind attaching the tent to those rails. If those bolts were present, the roof rail would have never snapped even if the Yakima attachment failed. . 4) The above statements indicate to me that the tent was not attached to the roof of the van in the recommended way. Based on my inspection of the other vans in the Basecamper fleet and others I saw while on our trip, as well as my own experience, the tents are attached directly to the roof rails (Yakimas) via the standard connections you see on a Thule or other roof rack. I have never seen an attachment set up like the one on this van with two additional perpendicular rails that are not secured to the tent. 5) Based on 4), it seems that the tent was attached in some sort of way to accommodate the vent, which I believe is not consistent with how it was supposed to be installed. Matt insisted it was industry standard, but as I stated I've seen and used multiple rooftop racks and attachments and there is never a set of wood blocks involved. 5) Additionally, there were other issues with this van, it overheated while idling for less than 10 minutes and I had to put a quart of oil in after the engine started knocking. Additionally, a cabinet door came off the hinges and there were issues attaching propane canisters to the tube connecting them to the camping stove. I only point these out as they indicate a pattern of issues with the van that support the statements made above. In summary, I don't think the issue was a result of my driving at a legal speed, it seems more an issue with the tent not being installed properly. Yakima roof bars should never fail if installed properly, and given how the tent was installed it's a pretty logical conclusion that those had issues as well. This was not only an inconvenience for our trip, but a very dangerous situation if the tent had hit someone's car on the highway when it flew off. In my dealings after the fact with Matt, he has come across as very defensive and argumentative. Given the gravity of the potential consequences, I would think every effort would be made to ensure that each requirement that the driver needs to know is explicitly called out and delivered to the driver so that there is no chance for something like this to happen. The attitude I've been getting in my dealings with Matt does not give me any confidence that they are committed to doing everything possible to ensure a safe trip for their customers. I don't think the van I rented (Tan Campervan) is suitable for customer rentals. read more

Let me start by saying how excited I was for this trip, it was something my wife and I were planning to do for a long time. Before booking a van or RV I did endless research and I will save you the time. IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO RENT A RECREATIONAL VEICHLE out of Salt Lake City, BOOK with these guys. The Van. Approx 880$ Booked the tree-line van for the extra space as we had a significant amount of gear, plus you'll likely be transporting firewood at some point. This was a good choice for us given our gear situation. Clean van, and most importantly mechanically sound, no problems at all, no speaks, no rattles, no freakin worries! This thing was easy to drive, easy to see in the mirrors, and not too big where I couldn't take it wherever I wanted. It was surprisingly good on gas(I babied it and only three fill ups for all that mileage) Set up well, the netting in the back is like genius, the cabinets/cooler easily held food for six days and all our beverages. I mean I was making eggs every morning, full bbqs for dinner. you can really take and cook whatever with the setup they provide. setting up the outdoor camp stove on the table(also provided by basecamper) wherever, whenever, in some of the most beautiful locations in the united states is not enough to warrant the price mark but, was some of the most enjoyable parts of the trip. Its a hotel on wheels with literally everything you actually need to spend sometime off grid already included. The bed was comfortable, plenty of blankets/pillows I brought sleeping bags knowing it would be in the 20s at night and never touched them. used the heater one time in Teton for about fifteen minutes, it warmed the van enough for the entire night. issues: Had a little issue starting the heater, but I made a phone call to them and figured it out in ten minutes. I broke the French press, I replaced it before returning the van, and they were understanding and did not charge me No other issues. Trip: We drove from basecamper vans to Jackson hole, did the entirety of Yellowstone park, back through Jackson and to salt lake. We drove whenever, went looking for wolves every night/morning. You could not drive this van more than I did in 5 days. grand total I was over mileage by 594miles I paid an extra 200$ and honestly I would have paid more. It was a flawless trip. I've done Moab in a rental car for the same time, in the end the extra few hundred you spend for a van like this pays for itself, everything you need is there and if you are like us and trying to see Yellowstone in a short period of time, this is the way. thank you basecamper vans. trip was glorious and you had a big part in that. I've used Basecamper twice: to do a climbing trip to St. George and Vegas and a MTB trip to Moab. On both occasions, service was top-notch. The vans were clean and ready to go, with kitchen kit, bedding, water, and various accessories. All kinds of thoughtful stuff we didn't have to pick up on the road. Vans are much better to drive than an RV, and the right balance of cozy and roomy for us. The dual-fuel CNG van to Vegas was better than expected. I have no previous experience with CNG vehicles, but it was easy enough to use, and fueling stations are plentiful, so long as you know where to look (get an app or check the web). Paying $1.65 / gal equivalent cut our fuel cost nearly in half for a long drive, and we never dipped into the gasoline tank until the home stretch - which to be honest was more due to laziness than anything else. Nice touches: the solar charging on the red van. Maybe not truly necessary (we drove the van every day, and the aux batteries could have been charged off the alternator) but I think it's a cool feature. The space heater in the light blue van was AWESOME -- I'm keeping this in mind for a SKI TRIP to Silverton for this winter. Van life is way better than motels. ;) read more

We were on the road in Salt Lake City when our conversion van broke down. Every other place turned us away either because they were booked several weeks forward, or because the warranty problem that we had would be unprofitable to them. Matt was unhesitating and patient in working to help us identity exactly what was wrong, and helped us get on our way as fast as possible. Matt and Mark are without a doubt the kindest people we have ever met, we really lucked out by meeting people like them who know their craft well. Although we did not rent a van from them this time, I would definitely do so next time I'm in the area. Sure you could rent a van elsewhere, but I'd rather do it here because I know we'll always be taken care of. read more

Nice Vans but They Nickeled and Dimed Us. My spouse and I took a Basecamper Patti Wagon to Capitol Reef and the N. Rim of the Grand Canyon. The van was v. comfortable for two--I'm 6'1" and feared the bed would be too short; it wasn't. It was also well equipped--Matt and Mark (who I gather are the owners) stocked ours with everything needed for car camping except for food and bevs. The equipment was good quality, too--Coleman stove, Helinox chairs, etc. So if this were just a review of the van, I'd give Basecamper five stars. But we had service issues that, in the end, made me less than enthusiastic. First off, the engine warning light stayed on nearly the whole time we had the van, turning our vacation into a week of (mild) worry. Mark insisted the light would go off and that it only came on intermittently. That wasn't true. We had the van for eight days, and the light stayed on all but one day (when we didn't drive much). As a result, I had to call him several times to ask what we should do. The first few, his answer was basically, "I don't know--I can't get through to the dealership." By the third day, he did get through and said he'd been told everything would be fine. In the end, that was true; the van didn't break down. But driving the remote roads of southern Utah and the Arizona Strip, you don't want to be anxious about an engine. So we didn't get the worry-free trip Basecamper promises on its website. As for the nickel and diming, that came in several ways. One is the mileage charge that's tacked on, if you exceed 125 miles a day (which you likely will, if you head down to the national parks, as I suspect many people do). Mark told us as we were leaving that most customers end up paying an extra $75 to $200. We ended up paying $80. So our $109 a day rental ended up being ~ $119. That's reasonable, but if everyone ends up paying at least $75, why not bake it into the headline price? That'd be more transparent. Likewise, Mark insisted that we take the van to the carwash before returning it. For ~ $1,000, they can't clean it? A small charge, sure, but tack that on to your final bill, too. Then there's the insurance--the deductible is $1,500. That means you're going to be responsible for anything that's likely to happen to the van--rock chip, side-panel ding, etc. Put differently, the insurance covers Basecamper, but it doesn't really cover you. Finally, Mark tried to nip me for another $20 after I left my headphones in the van. I asked if he could mail them to me. To his credit, he said he would--but only if I sent him a check for $20 first. (A small USPS Priority Mail flat-rate box costs $7.) My spouse thinks that's reasonable for his trouble; I think it's nickel and diming, esp. after our engine-light adventure. read more

I had Basecamper vans deck out my Ford Transit to be a tiny house which has turned into a home. I have been living in it full time for about 2 years and have not had a single issue. The quality and craftsmanship is top-notch and I'm sure it will last for many years on the road. The good thing when you have Basecamper is you get a extremely experienced master carpenter named Mark who really works magic forming your small spaces. Then you have Matt who is an expert at the water, gas, electric, and the solar that you need. Basecamper vans is a complete package which makes getting your van build done much easier and more affordable. Like most people I don't have a lot of expendable income and they figured out ways for me to save money and still get what I needed. From my experience I would say that if you are working with Basecamper vans you are very lucky indeed. read more

We recently rented the "Tan Van" and were, overall, pleased. The van is very new (only 15,000 miles), clean, and equipped for most things car camping related. It has a stereo with an aux. cord and Bluetooth capability, and a couple of speakers up front. The check out and check in process were streamlined and smooth, Matt was very easy to deal with and knowledgeable. My criticisms of this particular van are mainly with the "bed". It measures 5' x 4'8". This might work for one small adult to sleep diagonally on or a kid or two, but should not by any means, be considered a bed for an adult. My girlfriend slept diagonally on the bed and I slept on the floor, after buying bedding on the road to accommodate this arrangement. Not quite the romantic birthday weekend we had planned for her, but we made do and had a great time anyway. This van could also benefit from some leveling blocks. Unless you're in a very well developed camp ground, you're going to need them. All in all, we enjoyed the vehicle and the experience, but would CERTAINLY make sure we get one with an actual bed next time. read more

This van was great for my week long trip w/ a friend through Southern Utah. Matt picked us up at the airport, hooked us up with an AWD van (the White Van) because it was snowing down south, and dropped me off at a friends house after I returned the van. Matt makes everything easy and we appreciated his laid back attitude. The van itself had everything we needed during our trip (anytime we realized we needed something, we looked in the storage container and there it was). The van also kept us just warm enough to sleep comfortably during our one night of 0 degree temps. Basecamper is a little more expensive than competitors, but in our experience, the vans are nicer and more capable, and Matt is more flexible than other van rental companies. I'll start with a summary - If you're planing a trip around SLC and looking for a van, don't even look anywhere else, rent it from basecampervans. Period. We had a blast using their white van, and were super happy to call it home for almost three weeks. It has a comfy bed, small cooler that plugs into a battery, tons of storage space and comes pre-packed with all the gear you need for cooking and eating in the great outdoors. The car is new, clean, drive amazingly well and is perfect for any type of trip (ours was camping and hiking mainly). Matt was awesome and super helpful. Quick background info, I am a frequent SLC traveler for outdoor trips, and also used SLC as my base for burning man many times, normally renting from different local RV shops. This year I saw basecampervan and thought the offer looked pretty amazing and went with it, despite next to now reviews from "active" yelpers, I thought I'd take a little risk here Let's compare it against local RV chains that I used in the past... Short version: Rent elsewhere, you might get better value (you really do!) and less frustration. Don't fall for the shiny webpage. Long version: The Good: The guy did airport pickup. That's cool, other Van/RV rental paces I used in the past, don't do that. Then again we drove off to a backyard of some apartment complex to do the handover. The camping equipment in the van is simple but pretty complete, especially if you don't have sleeping bag or don't want to borrow utensils. Basic insurance is included, I didn't get to see policy document thought, so who knows... The Bad: The vehicles was a pretty old converted transporter (ours with ~90k miles) and not as neat as we are used to on pickup. The bed is a simple wooden board. They sell the CNG tank, that is supposed to save costs, that one got us around 200 miles far, since there is no CNG station west of SLC you are out of luck if you happen to go that direction... ... and after that the van ran guzzled up a 30 gallon tank in just 300 miles (at a constant 75-80 m/h on freeway). That is comparable or worse than the full sized RVs we normally rent. Extra 100 miles (beyond 125 miles /day) are charged at 35 USD, seems steep given these are just simple transporters and given that local outlets for full sized RVs just charge 25 - 35 USD. The electric cooler does not really cool, vegetables in there turned bad after 2-3 days, despite constant "cooling" Lastly right from the onset the guy renting came across as rather unfriendly... normally people in SLC are super nice. And now for the ugly: When we arrived the guy asked us where we go and as we said burning man, he said he now has to charge us 1k USD deposit. Obviously this sort of info can not be found on the webpage at the time of writing (and comparing that to 400 USD for a full RV at a local chain that should have raised some red flags, but what are you going to do when you are that far... again worth keeping in mind that this is just an old transporter with some slight mods) Upon return he checked vehicle in multiple places swiping finger on different places (ceiling, inside compartments etc) until he found some dust somewhere. As usual we properly cleaned the vehicles inside-out prior to returning and took good care, local RV shops have always fully refunded all deposits. Not here, here we were told cleaning this up normally takes 6 hours and he would fully charge us. And another.. 150 USD. After returning home we got the bill stating that on top of it all he would also keep the initial 200 USD as he said we had been driving on a dry lake bed and that is not allowed (btw. we never received a copy of the contract we signed, could this be any more shady?) Finally to round things up we were charged am additional "fuel service fee". Story here is, that we were in SLC ahead of return time, close by CNG station was closed so we asked him if he could recommend a close one. He said we shouldn't worry, he would just refill, provide us with a receipt and charge just for that (which we also never received) Summary I'd give this place 1 stars if you are a burner, 2 stars if your a simple outdoorsy person. I highly recommend checking out some of the local RV places first though, you might even save money. All in we were charged around 1.2k USD including all fees. Incidentally our normal go to place for RVs quoted us 1.125k USD for the same 5 days (for a full sized RV that sleeps 5, not including insurance and additional miles though) All in all, if you don't care about shower, toilet, fridge, air con etc. and everything else is already booked, and if you simply want to travel as cheap as possible... well maybe then you should check out some local moving van shops first (like many do anyway). Used these guys last summer on a trip to Telluride. Matt and Jen were great, they picked me up at the airport. It was quick and easy, and I got on the road in a jif. Vans are clean, the lining and blankets smelled like they had just been washed. It came fully packed with a stove and dishware :-), which made it easier for me, I didn't have to pack as much. They even gave me the inside scoop on some places to camp at on my way down. All in all,it was a great trip, using awesome vans that had a solar panel on the roof was a nice touch as well. Super easy online booking. P/U and drop off at the airport. Van was immaculate and ready to go. Water supplied, cooking utensils, table and chairs, even threw in some sleeping bags since it was so cold outside. Van drove great. We had a wonderful visit to Arches/Moab. Matt had a GPS available as well as maps of the area and jotted down some camping ideas for me along the way. The van got quite a lot of attention from others who thought it was a GREAT idea! Only con...if you're really tall, the bed might be a bit short for you. For my friend and I 5'4" and under...we were easily comfortable. Despite 23-36 degree weather, we never even needed the heater. We just spent a fabulous week exploring southern Utah in our Basecamper van. I have rented camper vans from other companies and Basecamper is by far my favorite. The van was awesome. Our van was equipped with absolutely everything we needed including camp chairs and tables and all the kitchen utensils, oh, and 5 gallons of water. The bed, comforter and pillows were super cozy. The van was in great shape, really clean, well-maintained and easy to drive. And added bonus, Matt makes it so easy to rent, he's really responsive and helpful. I highly recommend. read more

Matt was great picking us up from the airport and dropping us off at the end of our rental. The van was exactly as described and came with all the utensils and kitchen equipment you could need. The bed as fine for us, as other reviews have mentioned it may be an issue for tall people, my husband was 5"9 and we were both fine sleeping horizontal but any taller may have to go vertical and have dangling feet. Our trip entailed extra cleaning which we felt Matt was fair about charging us for. Would definitely use again. read more

My girlfriend and I rented a van for a long weekend and toured all over Utah. We flew into Salt Lake City airport, they picked us up at the airport and we hit the road. The natural gas engine was great, then having the regular gas as back up made for long stops between refueling. It hit 19 degrees while we were out there and still stayed warm at night. read more

First of all, I would tell you that it was easy to deal with Matt and his company as far as setting up a rental. The pick up/ drop off from the airport was SO nice!! Matt has really thought about the needs of a camper/traveler and has put a lot of thought into the needs of someone camping/ traveling on an excursion. We rented the black van for a week long fishing trip through Utah, Idaho, and into Montana. We constantly said to ourselves "this guy has thought about all the little things that you would forget, or have to go spend $50 at a store to get !" The van was just as described and the sleeping bags were amazingly warm, clean, and lightweight. Matt was willing to get, or provide, any little extra request that we made. The solar panel cooled cooler kept 1 bag of ice for 4 days, not to mention being able to plug in electronics such as a phone or a go-pro was plus ! I would highly recommend using this company and if I wasnt in Virginia, I would use them more often ! the CNG is definitely nice and saves you a lot of money ! On a recent trip to Utah's west desert, our van was comfortable, practical and affordable. I couldn't believe we filled the tank for less than twelve dollars and it lasted the whole trip. There was plenty of room for dogs and a ton of gear. The ride was smooth, but the van had lots of ground clearance and tires with an aggressive tread. Best of all was the full electrical service that let us make real blended smithies for breakfast! Definitely worth it. read more
