This restaurant is described as Vietnamese. Not very, more Japanese style. I was wanting a nice bowl of pho but was kinda sad to find they only had one bowl of "pho" I ended up opting in for the chicken soup which seemed to be pho like on the menu but found it bland and boring. Hoisin sauce was okay, but the bowl overall wasn't my favorite. The gyoza was good though. I was pleasantly surprised with that. Let's be real here for a second. I'm no expert but I am Filipina, originally from Hawaii, living in Vegas, have been to Asia, used to live in New York City and go to Southern California frequently. I know what great sushi/seafood and Asian food tastes like. No, you will not get exceptional sushi here or even true authentic Asian food. This will NOT happen! If you go in with the expectation that this is some fine and true Asian cuisine, you'll be sorely disappointed. If you go in with the expectation that they are really trying to get people to eat something out of their comfort zone, then you will definitely feel much better. And that's what I did. I think that the menu focused more on the hot foods is great. The salt and pepper calamari was great. Seasoned well, super crispy and not too greasy. The cabbage and peppers it sat on were quite tasty as well. The hot and sour soup had great flavor (although I got mine and it wasn't hot - as in to the touch). The sushi on the other hand... not so good. The fish seemed pretty fresh and the presentation was nice but it was grocery store quality at best. I ordered a rainbow roll and the inside only had imitation crab with mayo. Way too sweet and missing the cucumber and avocado. There was avocado on the outside and that was good. I was expecting much worse so I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't try anything else because there were a lot of rolls with cream cheese in them. I hate that. I do love the fact that this Asian restaurant exists and flourishes in such a small community in the middle of America. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. 7-9-24 Ordered $50 of Sushi when it comes out it was disgusting. The pickled ginger on the side had mold in it. Took one bite spit it out. When I complained they just piled on more on my plate. You could smell the mold. No fresh plate just the same sushi next to moldy old pickled ginger now piled 6" high. Makes me wonder how fresh all the rest of the stuff is. read more

So first time here after a few recommendations! I was skeptical about good sushi in an oil town and in North Dakota! What I found was a gem of a place! First off the place is clean and cozy! Second, the service and staff were both friendly and attentive! Not something you see often in this town! The sushi was solid and tasty! Is it the best? No, but was it well above average... absolutely! I got the rose roll and spicy tuna! Both were good and the presentation was nice! I got the fried rice as well and was not impressed! Living in San Diego I feel incredibly lucky to have access to some fantastic Asian restaurants and sushi. When my sister who lives in Williston brought me to Basil for the first time I was blown away. If Basil was in San Diego I'd eat here at least once a week. Everything we've tried on the menu is fantastic. The quality of the ingredients is great but the flavors are fantastic. My wife and I were in Williston again this past week and we are there twice because she also loved it so much. Do yourself a favor and stop here if you haven't already. I drove 5 hours - technically 6 1/2 hours with rest stops, from Billings, MT to Williston, ND for my 50 states Pho challenge. Yes indeed! Before my departure, I searched yelp as to how I can get North Dakota in this year and found that there is a restaurant in western North Dakota that serves Pho, among other Asian inspired cuisine. All I needed was the pho, so I made it a point to squeeze it into my itinerary while in Billings, MT. I arrived here around 6:30pm after checking into my hotel nearby. It was nice to finally get to my destination after 6 hours+ on the roads. The place was moderately filled and the casual ambiance was nice to set the mood for the evening's festivities. I actually asked for a booth, since the host said asked if I wanted to get a seat at the bar. I declined and went to get my seat at a table / booth. The service here was good and typical. It felt like an upscale version of your typical Vietnamese place, but they serve other Asian deliciousness here as well. I can't complain too much though. I was in western North Dakota and I can't be too picky about my food choices, no matter how eccentric they can be! Lol thankfully they had pho still on the menu when I got there. The overall experience at the Asian Bistro here in Williston, North Dakota was pretty good and I found myself having a good time, especially with the $14.50 but large AF bowl of pho. It was seriously large, but small enough for a man's sized meal. While the prices here can be a little expensive, please be mindful that you are in western North Dakota. It is always cool to support local businesses, especially in more isolated cities and towns. This Asian Bistro is located at 1224 Main Street in the heart of Williston, North Dakota. They accept major credit cards, which is always a great thing, and cash too. For me, I drove here in a rental car and found street parking nearby. I don't know whether or not Willston has its own city public transportation system, but that's alright though. Just get here and you will be treated handsomely to these awesome cuisines. From the menu, they do incorporate Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisine and dishes into their menu offerings. The pho itself was very tasty and your quintessential mastery to the senses. They didn't use regular rice noodles, but a Chinese variety that is a pretty good substitute. I could tell the difference and it was pretty good and delicious. The price was kind of worth it, but I would have personally priced it at $12.50, but when in western North Dakota, just gotta deal with it. I also ordered the crispy egg rolls on the side as an appetizer. It was hot and fresh. You can tell that they make it fresh for you, since it burned my tongue upon impact. For what it's worth though, I felt like this place does a good service by providing visitors, like me, and residents a place where they can have access to Asian cuisine. It really does help me in my quest for my 50 states Pho challenge and I am glad that I did step foot in here on a nonchalant Thursday evening from a drive from Billings, Montana. The restaurant is rather clean and very neat. Definitely a nice place for date night or just to enjoy a bowl of Pho. 4.0 stars for the entire experience. 5.0 stars for being relatively close by to Billings, MT. 4.0 stars for the food and 3.5 stars for the service. I'll start with the soup: slightly spicy, not too thick or thin and flavorful. The red curry was just OK. It had potatoes in it which was weird. I have never had curry like that. It was pretty bland. That might have been just a communication issue. I don't think my waitress spoke very much English. The tuna tataki though, OMG! The tuna was cooked to perfection, just a light sear on the outside but still raw throughout. The real kicker was the sauce that the tuna is served on. The tuna comes on a bed of noodles that is covered in an orange citrus sauce. The sauce flavor combined with the texture of the noodles was the best part of my meal! Came here while on vacation in Williston. My expectations weren't super high, and I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Deluxe Sushi Sampler (or something like that... don't really remember the name exactly) and it came with some nigiri and a tuna roll and a california roll. It was good! The quality of the fish was good, definitely better than grocery store sushi but not the best I've ever had in my life. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their dishes too. I chatted with the sushi chefs at the bar - super friendly. Food was a mixed bag. The squid salad was great and tasted just like any decent sushi spot. Now I only had one role and sadly is was terrible. I ordered the flaming sake crunch per the waiters recommendation and it was original... Big mistake. First, it was sloppily made, none of the role held together. There was too much mayo sauce, I stop eating because the smell alone was sickening..... Think mayo left in the sun too long. Lastly, tuna was not solid pieces, it was grated which is never a good sign. Funny part of the roll is that it looks like it is masquerading as a loaded Chicago hotdog..... Weird. I'm sure this place has better sushi options but I definitely chose the wrong roll.
