There are a few locations in Bradenton and 1 in Sarasota and over the thousands of times we've eaten at Basil's, I would say there are only a few times where maybe the chicken was dry or we were not satisfied. I read some good reviews about Basil's and have always wanted to try the chicken. I finally convinced my wife to accompany me there for dinner. The first sign of upcoming disappointment was the lack of people in the establishment, the next was mounds of cooked chicken just waiting on the grill. My wife ordered a three piece chicken meal with corn and macaroni & cheese for the sides. I ordered the half chicken meal with Spanish rice and fresh vegetables for my sides. The main host was very friendly and explained all of the menu choices. The rest of the personnel were pleasant and accommodating. The chicken was the driest chicken that I've ever had in my life. My wife agreed. The Actual flavor of the chicken was pretty bland. It's sad that the best part of the meal was the sides. The Spanish rice was tasty with nice pieces of onion in it. The pita included was moist and fresh. The broccoli, although bland was cooked perfectly. My wife had similar thoughts about her sides. Having enjoyed rotisserie chicken at a local chain, Perhaps my wife and I were spoiled for tasty, well-seasoned, moist chicken. Unfortunately, Basil's did not live up to their hype. Salad - it is ONLY Iceberg Lettuce (the cheapest lettuce in the world) & chicken meat on the top. ONLY Iceberg Lettuce, no crouton, tomato, onion, cucumber, cheese, NOTHING else but Iceberg Lettuce & chicken on top. That's crazy. I noticed that back in 2016, I reviewed this restaurant & had this same thing happen, so since 2016, they have NOT changed the salad. Oh, the chicken on the salad was so dry. I popped a piece of chicken in my mouth before sitting down to eat my lettuce and I could hardly swallow it. Flavor was fine but it was dry as a bone. DON"T BOTHER with it. You can buy a head of iceberg lettuce very cheaply, open a can of white chunk chicken meat, drain the chicken & put it on top of your iceberg lettuce - done! Your homemade salad will not be dry and just think, you now have the opportunity to actually make it a 'real salad' by throwing in some of your favs like black olives (my personal fav). This menu item should not be identified as a salad. Very sad I made this discovery in '16, forgot & ordered it again in '18. read more

We have been eating at Basil's ever since they opened. And I was going there even before - I was the acting Fire Marshal and did their Certificate of Occupancy! This is just plain good food - and it has been the same from day one. Gus and Nick make the place not only a place with good food, but also a friendly place where you get to enjoy eating there. In September (?) they sold the place they've been in for 20+ years and moved down to the plaza on the south side of Manatee Avenue immediately west of Burger King. The new place is even nicer than the old. It is brighter - both in lighting and furnishing - and the counter is a fresh new look, too. We really like the new look. As for the food - it tastes the same, if not even better! We both had chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, while I had the beans and my wife a salad. It was so tender and tasty - just like before! There are other options beside chikcen, and I have been known to have gyros and my wife a chicken salad on pita - but generally I come for the chicken. The only thing missing from the old location is the drive through. My wife feels bad about that because she would often go there and get a chicken salad through the drive in when I am working out of town - but now she'll have to take advantage of the two spaces directly in front of the door for the carry out business. All in all we highly recommend Basil's - always have, always will! read more

Surprisingly, we had a hard time finding a place for ribs. The places I did find with BBQ in their name seemed to only serve BBQ sandwiches, chicken and brisket. Then I found Basil's. The ribs were yummy as were the sides and the prices were extremely reasonable. I Greek salad was also really good. This one is on our list for our next visit as well. read more

We ordered from Basil's for the first time tonight for dinner. I had the three piece white meat chicken with coleslaw and baked beans. This was possibly the worst meal I have ever had. First of all the chicken pieces were chopped. They were not full pieces. The amount of actual meat totaled more like one chicken breast, not even close to three. Second the chicken was so dry I couldn't eat it. It was just awful. Lastly, the baked beans had a good flavor but the container had about seven beans and the rest was liquid. I have no idea how these people stay in business. I will never order from here again. read more

Amazing spread of chickens on the grill when we walked in. Rib sandwich was the special so I ordered it. Shouldn't have. It was a small plastic-y looking piece of pre-fabricated meat-type product. I took one bite and threw it out and left. We really wanted to like it here but will not be back. I should have tried the chicken or the real ribs. They should say that the rib sandwich is fake. We purchased two Basils salads for lunch today. When got home and opened the box there were so many brown pieces of lettuce, slimy, and watery 99% of my salad was this way. I called the restaurant and the owner said well I have to give my customers something! you know how expensive lettuce is? I said, don't give this lettuce to your customers, just throw it out. I've ate at this restaurant multiple times for many many years when I just recently experience a negative visit. I had to take my 6 year old in to pee because he was soon to pee his pants but when we walked in the owner seemed to have a huge problem because when we entered we walked straight to the restroom and I guess we didn't look like "paying customers" but he just continued to yell and give attitude to me when I repeated several times how I understood that I couldn't use the restroom and while I was already walking me and my son out. To make things worse the bbq beans were right from a can and lousy. And the Spanish rice was not really Spanish and it was under cooked. The pita bread was ok but it could have been grilled longer. They ask for the tip when you make your order at the beginning of the visit and didn't specify that the sides would be added to the rice & chicken bowl I ordered. When I commented about this, the older guy with the receding hairline said it's written on the board with an attitude that he didn't give a rats ass. I've been eating Basils since I was a kid. Such a Bradenton staple. This new location has a fresh new look and the same great food. Flame broiled chicken is so flavorful and light! I love the Greek salad as my side...Delish! Hubby loves the gyro wrap and my daughter eats up chicken and salad like it's her job! We come here every few weeks, affordable, fast, and delicious night out. Lunch or dinner-don't miss out on this tasty Bradenton staple! Great spot for grilled chicken but the wings are my goto. They don't separate the drums so you get a double portion compared to anywhere else that serves wings. The bbq sauce is excellent and has a little kick. Wings are grilled not fried so less fat and great taste. Ribs are excellent too. Good place for lunch or dinner. I have ate here numerous times. Their ribs are usually very good - tender, meaty and have a tasty rub. I recommend them, but they are not cheap. The chicken tends to be a bit dry. It's Ok, but does not come with a lot of flavor as many flame broiled establishments serve their chicken. It's a little pricey, healthy, but dry. My biggest complaint is their gyros. Specifically the gyro meat. It is sliced paper thin. So thin that the meat comes off VERY dry. So much so that if it is reheated - it reminds one of jerky (seriously). On my last visit I asked they slice it thicker. They refused saying they use a saw and this is the only way they slice it (no knife available). Honestly, I have probably ate at close to a hundred places that serve gyros. No where have I found meat sliced this thin. It ruins the meal. The fact that they refused to accommodate shows a real lack of customer service. Perhaps the reason is their lame attempt to save money by stretching the meat out in the Gyro. Well it fails miserably. I would much rather spend a little more (if I must) for flavorful gyro meat then dry jerky. read more

I called last night and ordered a Greek salad for 10 people to be picked up at noon today. I got there at 12:02 and there were two people working there that did not know a thing about it. The girl st the register laughed and said she didn't work last night. The guy cooking looked confused, checked a calendar on the counter and got out his phone. He went to the back and made the salad. The restaurant was full. I felt sorry for the guys who ordered ahead of me because all the girl at the register did was keep ringing up new orders and no one was preparing them. The guy took about 15 minutes to make my salad. He charged me $25 and no apology at all. The place was packed. They really need more help and obviously more communication. read more

They have curbside service since their new location has no drive thru. My usual is the 2 pc lunch special with salad and steamed broccoli. Satisfying and guilt free. "Worst management I have ever seen"! My story begins when I bought a Deal Saver gift certificate online. The deal was $5 for $10 worth at any Basil location. The gift certificates had expired, but legally would still hold the original purchased value which was the $5 dollar amount. Last night I visited this location and showed the cashier the printed certificate. She immediately looked panicked and told us in order to use it, she would have to call her boss, weird? She told me the reason was due to a customer who scammed them out of an expired voucher. What the hell does this have to do with me??? Ten minutes later the manager calls back and told the cashier to come back in tomorrow at 3 in order to see it for himself. The man on the phone is supposedly the owner. What is he thinking??? If this is how the operate, they are beyond doomed!! I think the lack of customers inside was also a sure sign of future problems! All this over $5 bucks? Pathetic to say the least.
