I had two items to pack up, as I was travelling onward to a warmer climate in the US. The owner may be described as brusque perhaps, however, I realised he was really passionate and immersed in the shop, and the business. When I handed in a jacket-cardigan, and vintage jacket, pointing out the loose button, Lumi announced he would secure it, and went out of his way, at no charge, to secure the others. He is a character. He works long hours. In my case he delivered, with a sense of humour and a sense of 'theatre'. I got the sense that the customers coming in around me, danced with the character, the teasing and recognised someone who knew their craft. New York is full of characters. Lumi for me is one!

That's because it's on Ann Street, which is next to John Street, and on which there are no johns because this is right near the Financial District. I went in since previous washes had not gotten the food grease stains on a pair of brushed denim jeans to the point I would have hoped. I showed the employee the garment. The kind gentleman working there made sure he marked (however dry cleaners mark items) the tough spots I brought to his attention. Before I started, I asked for the price and, for the area, it seemed like a good, fair price. I only asked that it be ready for me in two days because I'd be leaving. I called the following afternoon prior to closing and it was already back in the store and available for pick-up. I went in the morning of the second day. A different person helped me and he was equally helpful and good-natured. They did the job right. While this doesn't affect the rating at all, Lower Manhattan is a very interesting place. If, upon leaving Ann Cleaners, you turn left, you're basically looking at One World Trade Center and, if you turn right, you can either head up to Chinatown or quickly enough be on the pedestrian promenade on the Brooklyn Bridge. Don't settle for just any pedestrian dry cleaning outfit. Instead, go to Ann Cleaners in or near the Financial District. Your closest subway station is Fulton Street.

I brought in a jumpsuit for minor underarm repairs (about 1 inch on each side) and basic cleaning. I was quoted $32 for the repairs and $25 for cleaning--a total of $57 for a single garment. They also wanted to charge $20 just to remove some lint from a coat on top of the cleaning. I did not leave the coat as the quote for cleaning and lint removal was more than the coat is now worth. It's clear these people will charge as much as they can. Unfortunately, there are few cleaners in Harlem, but at this rate, I'd rather travel across state lines to New Jersey. Ridiculous! I did not leave the coat for service, as I could not justify paying these fees. But I did pay $57 for the jumpsuit because I had to have it repaired ASAP. If you're looking for fair pricing for basic repairs or cleaning, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

We've been using them heavily for laundry lately because the washers and dryers in our apt building are out of service. Everything comes back clean and folded nicely.
