I wish I could rate this experience with 0 stars. During my virtual appointment, both the teacher assistant and doctor were more than 10 minutes late, which I understood given their likely busy schedules. However, what truly dismayed me was when the doctor abruptly ended the appointment because I requested to monitor my FIBROIDS and undergo an ultrasound. She dismissed my request for an ultrasound as "poor medical practice" because I had one done a month ago. But within that month, I've altered my diet, increased my Vitamin D intake, and started taking Ayurvedic tinctures. The doctor disdainful responsed to my Ayurvedic tincture usage, mocking me as she exited, saying "I have other patients waiting for me," left me feeling deeply disgusted, mistreated, and emotionally shattered. There were no questions asked about my diet, stress management, lifestyle, etc. She simply stated, "we don't know what causes it, and over 50% of women have it." It's ironic that a health condition so prevalent among women is discredited, under-researched, and mismanaged. It's also ironic that I have learned more about fibroids, how they are caused and how to shrink them on TikTok and YouTube from holistic doctors who believe that diet and lifestyle impact our health and people who have shrunken them naturally. I sometimes wonder if doctors prefer us sick. It's disheartening when a naturopathic doctor, whose role is to explore alternative methods to conventional medicine, offers no solution but surgery. As someone grappling with the mental toll of fibroids and receiving no advocacy or empathy from doctors, this experience was particularly distressing. Especially since she shared her experience of having surgery at around my age, implying it as a recommendation. Our bodies, diets, and lives differ. Treatment shouldn't be one-size-fits-all. I cried for a solid 10 minutes afterward because I have never felt so poorly treated. She made me feel powerless. I ended the call abruptly; I couldn't bear it. It's disheartening when a doctor won't listen to you. you are your best advocate. Best of luck to anyone struggling and seeking help. read more

I usually don't do post....EVER. But, my experience is worth communicating. I am a well-educated in medicine/science. I've worked personally in academia and industry but have never experienced such exceptional medical care/practice than I have with Bastyr. I can best describe my experience as more of a healthy relationship. They care about you as a person, your background, your comfort, working TOGETHER in junction with all physicians (if you have outside ones, like myself). The leadership/physicians are quite exceptional, they oversee EVERYTHING. However, the students (In my experience) are exceptional. Hospitals/Private Practices would be wise to take note of how they actually practice medicine and care for the patient. Not once did I feel they were after my money, or it was just business as usual. They always want to work with you and even your finances. Mind, Body and Spirit is truly important to them. StudentS have offered to come in on their day off for my appointments. Students and Physicians included, I have many accounts of going above and beyond to accommodate me. Both verbally articulate they want feedback. They are committed in a different way that is refreshing, to their practice. They are sensitive, compassionate, educated, direct and WILLING. They take their time with you to get accurate information and leave the door open even once leaving the appointments. I have not once ever felt rushed. The appointments encompass EVERYTHING a patient, like me, needs. And the engagement, practice comes off as completely natural, considerate, compassionate, direct, completely in the moment with both of us (everyone, everything in the room). Again, the Doctors are quite amazing and talented themselves. To be teacher and guiding the practice with all they have to juggle (I've been there) is quite the task. Educating the next generation of physicians is a tough undertaking while a patient is present. In my opinion, it encourages excellence in all staff/student's practice. They convey to them (students) the seriousness of what is in front of them, the patient. "This is real, this is an actual patient, take your time, you don't want to miss anything. Don't rush." How many times have you ever heard that in the hospital or medical appointment. Better yet, how many times have you felt seen, heard, given hope in an appointment? Their practice ability to teach (even educating patients), it's quite refreshing. And the directness is MUCH appreciated. I know I'm in good hands, emotionally and physically. If there were more of people like my Bastyr treatment team, the world would be a better place. However, my world is better because I do have the Bastyr team. Much Appreciation read more

Wholistic Psychology, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, Herbal Science, Exercise Science...I could go on but you should check it out for yourself. If nothing else, a trip to the campus will make you want to be a student there. The former seminary is surrounded by the forest of St. Edwards Park and is an island of tranquility in the hustle and rush of the northeast end of Lake Washington. What a great place for continuing education! Uni in the park!!! From the organic gluten free option cafeteria to the turtles naturally living in the landscaped plant pond area, this place lives the lifestyle it teaches! Great location for continuing education courses. I will definitely attend another conference here. Parking is free too and plentiful so no worries for conference attendees. Campus isn't too large, which is nice for visitors attending conferences or workshops especially for those who are prone to getting lost =D read more

Bastyr University - Seattle Wa: This is not a trusting, welcoming or friendly place. I was recently there, as an alumni to give away some of my naturopathic and homeopathic books after 35 years of practice. One would think this right if passage to pass on a few books and words or encouragement to students would be welcomed and add to honouring the life cycle of this interesting profession. Unfortunately they have hired some particularly rude, 'Karen' hall monitors who have nothing better to do then harass their honoured guests after I was given permission to pass out the books. Then a burly goon like character was assigned to take me to the library where my books needed checking for 'names' ?. Names, like my name on the inside cover? The recent graduates I have met from Bastyr seem to be unnecessarily burdened from over $200,000 in debt and most likely will never be able to pay it off. They lacked the ability to interview patients and so were left without the necessary skills to prescribe correctly. After five graduates from Bastyr failed at my practice, a lack of case taking skills was the main problem, I was not able to pass it onto anyone. Back in the day, I was lucky enough to meet the reveered John Bastyr ND, several times during my four years there, he was a warm, empathetic, thoughtful person. He told me he objected to his name being used for this school, now I know why. read more

This is my first quater at Bastyr, I'm in the Master in Acupuncture. I do not recommend this school to anyone. First, it is very expensive and they would raise 5% tution yearly and without telling the students. They would just put fake amount on the website or brochure. Then change it once you are in the mid quarter. We are paying $25,000 per year and this is a 3.5 years program (will be over $80,000 debt). They often rent out the chapel to host weddings and this mean they take up our chapel, restroom, and even cafeteria. They claim their campus a "fragrance free" environment but this is not true when there are weddings going on. I usually can't study because its so loud, and stinky. I'm only half way in the quarter and I already thinking about leaving the school. It is awful, the class size is large and you don't have anytime to practice. The faculties aren't helpful. I don't think its worth paying this much. I don't mind paying high tuition if I get good education. I wish someone would have told me this before. I wasted $10,000 this quarter and it went to the drain but its ok I just know I don't want to waste more time in this school. Read the review for the Bastyr's clinic, the faculties there do not have any real clinical experience. They graduated from Bastyr and went straight to teaching. I have heard so many bad things about getting treatment at the clinic. I personally experienced it too. Just so bad that I don't want to say it. The students are mostly rude, snooties and arrogant. But anyways the campus is nice where you get to see grasses, trees, and flowers. Well if you decide to go to school here make sure you think it through and do research. read more

I received a masters degree from the MSAOM program in 2009. Hopefully my experience can help future students decide if they want to attend. General - Do your research on what type of acupuncture you are interested in. There and MANY types! Bastyr specifically teaches "Traditional Chinese Medicine". Study up on what this means. I know alot of people in my class who came expecting to learn classical acupuncture and got something totally different. Campus - Beautiful! I hear the new student dorms are wonderful. Clinic - My favorite part of the curriculum. One of the huge advantages Bastyr has over any other schools. Faculty - For the most part, really good. I mean REALLY good. Unfortunately two of the best recently quit. And those that are left teach a highly institutionalized form of TCM. Now the bad... Administration - For the most part, really bad. I mean REALLY bad. Debt - Unless you are a trust fund baby you will finish your schooling with around 120,000 in debt for the bachelors/masters program. With interest you can expect to owe about 150,000 two years after finishing school. In most areas your income potential is simply not enough to pay off your loans over a 10 year period. Fortunately Obamas new IBR plan allows a maximum period of 20 years with payments based on your income. UNfortunately, this means you will always pay a fixed percent of your income and can never have a "good month". Do the research on how much you will owe. I have alot of friends who feel their lives are literally crippled from attending this school. Bottom line - If you are expecting to come to a wonderful University to learn a great form of healing, go somewhere else. Bastyr is a highly institutionalized and somewhat narrow minded place under the guise of a healing and learning center. Dont get me wrong, there are wonderful elements within the school but they are buried underneath the myriad of problems and business/bureaucracy that seems to plague the school. read more

I am in the Exercise Program at Bastyr and LOVE my instructors! They are awesome! June and Tiffany are probably the best teachers I have had in my 5 years of college. The curriculum is great and the classes are very informational, packed with everything I need to know. I only thing that I don't like is the exercise science room. The Bastyr learning kitchen is beautiful and right down the hall is a crappy exercise science room. It really needs to be bigger and needs to be updated. This review of specifically of Bastyr's on-campus Bookstore. This bookstore is fantastic! If you're looking for books on holistic health, naturopathic medicine, psychology, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and Herbs - this bookstore has it all. As an acupuncturist myself, I find this store to be an incredible resource. They have all of the textbooks necessary for any aspiring acupuncturist or student of Natrual medicine. Also, they have lots of books that are NOT on the reading list of an Acupuncture program - but probably should be. I've been in practice for several years now, but I often find myself in here just browsing for new books and research updates on this beautiful centuries-old form of medicine that I humbly practice. They've got a decent supply of acupuncture supplies as well. Including models, sharps containers, cups, etc. The selection of needles that they carry is *decent* but very limited. I only go here for needles when I'm really in a pinch - otherwise, I find much better prices and options for needles online. They've also got a good supply of organic snacks and other knick-knacks to peruse. Overall, a fantastic resource for all things that fall under the heading of "holistic and natural medicine". And after you've browsed around the store for a while, be sure to stop in to the cafeteria there at Bastyr - they really do have some wonderful vegetarian eats worth trying! read more

I've been coming here for their annual herb and food fair for the past 3 years. So I guess this review will be more on the fair. I must say, though, Bastyr is a nicely situated campus that located in the middle of a verdant state park. The campus is welcoming and has that homey feeling. I could spend hours at their well tended herb and food gardens. Who wouldn't love going to school here?! Back to the fair... The fair is fun and informative.. if you're into Eastern and herbal medicine. Herbal and edible plants are sold during the fair. The same goes with herbal and natural ointments, salves, and food! This year they even have Chopstix food truck parked in the parking lot to cater the fair goers. I wish they hold the fair for at least two days, with more vendors. However the number of vendors seem to grow year after year, so I guess I need to be more patient. #ReachingForMyAntiStressSalve So next year, make sure you bring your friends, kids, and dogs to the fair. They have a large area for the kiddos to play and dogs-friendly environment. You could take the shuttle or pay a small fee to park on site. Either way, it's a really nice outing for everybody and a great opportunity to learn about natural medicine. Win-win, I'd say! read more

Bastyr is an anomaly because they teach natural medicinal practices while remaining grounded in scientific facts. The staff care genuinely for the students, and I learned more in 1 year from Bastyr professors than I've learned in almost 20 years of school. Some popular programs include Naturopathy, Nutrition, and Midwifery. Their Ayurvedic sciences are continually expanding. Personally, I completed the Holistic Landscape Design program (Permaculture) in 2015-2016. I couldn't possibly recommend it highly enough for students interested in sustainable agriculture and landscaping. If you're interested in this specific program, feel free to reach out. I'm happy to answer questions. I often see negative comments about Bastyr being hokey or teaching snake oil. Yes, Bastyr professors offered information on unconfirmed practices, but always with that lense: that they were theories in need of further study. They would never present theory as fact. This approach is highly pragmatic and scientific. In fact, it's exactly how scientific advancement occurs: identifying topics that have more questions than answers. And then researching such questions to discover potential answers. Bastyr encourages students to research such questions and develop their own, informed, answers. Anything presented as fact was supported by scholarly studies and extensive scientific research. Anything unsupported my such mediums was offered as a possible explanation that students could believe/disbelieve and choose to further research/not. Example: a mycology professor told us that mushroom spores have been found outside of earth's atmosphere, leading some to believe that mushrooms originated in outer space! It was a fun and quirky tidbit that stuck with me, but it was only presented as one (minor) theory to explain the origin of mushrooms. This approach gives students a solid foundation in science-based care while leaving room for curiosity and creative exploration. I truly believe Bastyr university is pioneering in science-based, holistic healthcare. I'm proud to be an alumna and happy to share a little bit about my Bastyr experience. read more

From the staff to the physicians to the students....INCOMPETENT!!!!!!!!!!!! Every single time I go in to the clinic they screw something up!!!! They under treated my thyroid, told me my lab requisition was faxed to quest diagnostics, and it wasn't. And then they faxed the wrong fax and couldn't find the latest correct fax. I ended up having to leave after three hours and not get my blood drawn, and then wait for medic Cal for 45 minutes for a ride home for absolutely nothing. Four hours of my day wasted and my blood was not drawn because of their incompetence. They checked my daughters blood sugar and the machine was broke, so they never tested again and the doctor just left and never returned. The doctor reprimanded me for fighting for the right medication. He had been reading someone else's labs!!!!!!!!!The first doctor I saw lowered my thyroid medication and made me clinically hypothyroid when I went in to have my thyroid evaluated because I was feeling hypothyroid symptoms to begin with! The current doctor wants to test labs that are recent and were normal. I gave them 10 years worth of medical records. They are all complete idiots and I am absolutely stunned with their incompetence. For the most part they are friendly and the building is very clean and modern, but I'm not there to socialize, I'm there to get healthcare, and both my daughter and I never received the healthcare we needed. They don't even deserve one star. read more

Haunted Trails Review! First, when they bill it as 5 haunts, they really mean 1 haunt because it is just one trail with different parts to it. They were so very organized! No confusion about what to do. First, you get your tickets (will call or not) from the main ticket booth. They essentially give you a number. You wait for your number to be called, then you go to the first person and wait. Then you go to the hay bales and wait. Then you go to the front of the woods and wait. Then you go! (There actually are actors keeping you entertained at all the waiting points). You are lumped in groups of 10 or so, regardless if you know the people or not. Not a huge fan of this, but it certainly made things move a little faster. We still ended up catching up to other groups. The woods themselves are dimly lit and spooky because their is a lot of brush cover that goes to about waist height. They could really use that more to their advantage in the future. The trail was long, funny, scary, etc. There is a cemetary that is a little more free form before you come to the last building in the haunt, where you wait again. They say it is a maze, but really there is only a couple "wrong turns" you can take. Still fun though. Then you are done! Not the most original or scary haunted house I've been to, but one of the more organized and certainly long enough. There are also food vendors in the lot before you go in--and since you don't stand in a line, you can actually wander around and eat and stuff! read more

I have called this school so many times trying to get information. No one has really been able to help me. They are rude, not supportive of working adult schedules and will shove you from person to person. They will talk to you in monotone and reiterate their policies that you might be violating. You will then have to prove you cannot violate a policy you knew nothing about because you are a new student enquiring who has obviously never attended their school and now probably never will. I really wanted to attend Bastyr but not going to happen. I will put my money and time elsewhere. read more

I don't just move clear across the country for just ANY school -- I am in my 5th year of studying for my Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine, and I am continually impressed at the education I am receiving. Although the price is STEEP, it is all well worth it because I'm nurturing my calling, being taught by brilliant professors and clinicians, and I'm surrounded by friends and classmates who want to continue to revolutionize healthcare-- we want to put HEALTH back in healthcare, and to truly do that, naturopathic medicine (AKA integrative medicine) is the way to go :) read more

We came to the Annual Herb Fair. This used to be the location St. John Vianney Catholic church when we first moved to the area, so I have lots of experience with coming here over the years. First for Church related functions, then when Bastyr bought the property, to deliver pizzas. Now that Church is no longer here and we aren't doing pizzas, they still have events and a wonderful garden that is open to the public. Plus the dining hall / food service is open to the public and has delish vegetarian dishes. read more

I recently visited the park with my nieces. I was impressed to see that it was clean and handicapped accessible. The people were friendly, and I was glad to find that I wasn't the only adult on the slide! But, the first thing that I noticed when we arrived was the volleyball net! I search for "nearest vegan food" and it took me here to the cafeteria. Confusing to say the least. Now, granted there were a lot of basic vegan options, mostly beans, quinoa and a few sides. However the pricing was outrageous. I'm not sure why vegan food is ridiculously expensive, considering when you are using some of the cheapest possible ingredients one can use. Example; dried lentils, beans and rice are about as cheap of an ingredient as you can get, along with simple spring salad greens. For a single plate of some beans and salad as well as a small bowl of split pea soup it came to $18.50. Because you see, what they don't mention is that you are paying by the weight. But that's just it, I barely put anything on that plate, and the flavors were mediocre at best with not as much variety as you'd imagine based off what people have said about this place. So I'm giving it a 2 star for having the vegan option, but it's certainly not at all what I expected. Very overpriced simple simple food. Food wasn't garbage, but I'm disappointed. read more

I attended the Naturopathic Medicine program at Bastyr for about 2 years. I was attracted to Bastryr because the program was supposed to be more science based and I had a strong science background. Unfortunately, most of the students did not believe in science or evidence based medicine. Very few students even had any interest in research. I was expecting an open-minded student body but most of the students are self-righteous and closed minded. The most disturbing part about attending this school is that many of the students do not have healthy emotional and physical boundaries. In addition, the most outright offensive and disturbing of all is that the students are taught that if they are over 30 and are not married and have no children than they are not complete. You are also taught to consider that any female patient with emotional distress, over 30 with no children and no partner is not well. As a mother, I think it is abhorrent to attempt to program women to become impregnated while they are in medical school. Any successful doctor knows that medical school studies, residencies and starting a practice leaves no time to care for small children. I was expecting to get into research and an incredible science based program but instead felt like I was in Christian cult full of emotionally disturbed women with the primary goal of becoming impregnated. Moreover, the teaching methods are crap as the instructors are not good teachers even if they are well-meaning and experts in their field. I understand that medical school is very stressful, but the number of students who actually hate Bastyr after attending for 1 or 2 years was shockingly high. The school is overpriced and if you are not wealthy and have a business plan when you walk in the door, expect to work as an adjunct professor post-graduation for a good long time. Go to a real medical school. This school is a magnet for people who have no business with patients, primarily because they are too emotionally disturbed, young and self-righteous to be of help to a sick person. I believe Bastyr would be a much healthier place if they championed single women who dedicate their lives to their careers and decide to not have kids and get married instead of making them feel like social outcasts. read more
