Service was really friendly & helpful for us first timers and since we're big fans of a good schnitzel, we ordered the jagerschnitzel (fried pork cutlet with mushroom) & the farmer's feast to get a little try of several things (smoked pork loin, sausage & pork roast with sauerkraut or red cabbage). Meals also come with salad, complimentary bread and your choice of side carb - we tried the dumpling, which is kind of like a big ball of stuffing with gravy on top, and the Viennese pasta - a gnocchi-ish lighter pasta (we liked this one best, it melted in your mouth!). Food was made fresh - you can hear them pounding out the schnitzel - and was very well seasoned. We ended with a slice of strudel to share and it was stuffed with so much apple, it was filling in itself! Decor is retro and cozy - a warm & inviting vibe for a cold wintery night. There are only a few German restaurant options in the Edmonton area that serve Schnitzel and Spatzle (a German-style egg noodle). Bauernschmaus is one of the options but unfortunately not the best option. The decor was authentic and homely but the service was drawn out and lacked follow up from our waitress. There was also a crazy long wait for our food even though the restaurant was about half full. With the entrees, you got a side salad to start which was tasty with a sweet dressing. The schnitzel however was not crispy and served at room temperature. You also get a very tiny portion of the side you choose regardless if it is fries or spatzle. read more

The Bauernschmaus is an interesting, if not difficult name to remember and pronounce. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue nicely. A buddy of mine and I decided to check out this German/Austrian restaurant on a cold, first Sunday of winter for lunch. The place has an old school vibe to it and reminded me of being back at my grandma's house. From what I saw, I'm guessing that 99% of their clientele are regulars as many were dressed in their Sunday best and of a certain age (aka. old geezers). We were greeted rather rudely by one of the waiters when we first walked in (Urbanspoon never lies) but the waitress we had was nice enough. Also, I oddly got some stares from a few of said older clientele which was a tad off putting. Don't you just love when a restaurant has no website AND no menu to see beforehand? I took a few photos to remedy the situation (sorry, the photos aren't the best). Most of the dishes are in the $15-18 price range but include a soup (goulash) or salad along with your choice of side. We ordered: - Bread pork cutlet with mushroom cream paprika sauce ($11.50) - I picked the mixed salad and dumpling as my choice of side. I like how you can hear your meat being hammered back in the kitchen so you know it's fresh. The sauce was delicious with the pork cutlet and the meat itself was tender (and not greasy as it was lightly fried). The dumpling was interesting to try as I've never had one before. The lunch deal is cheap but could have used more vegetables (two dinky carrots don't cut it). - Promenaden platte ($15.50) - combination platter of breaded smoked pork loin, sausage and pork cutlet. I tasted a bite of the sausage which was quite good. My buddy enjoyed his as well but would have liked a sauce to go with his various meats. Verdict? The food is decent but be prepared to wait. I'm not sure if I would go out of my way again to eat at the Bauernschmaus. German/Austrian food is heavy on the meat, deep fried and doesn't have that oomph/flavour that makes me want to go back for more. If you want something simple, then definitely check them out. We have been to this German restaurant many times over the years. The food is fairly authentic and most items are quite tasty. I had the special - pork schnitzel. It was tasty and a good value for the money. My father had the Paprika Handel. It was good - but over-priced. My suggestion is that if you want some good German/Polish food go to the Continental Treat. Also good food and the prices are generally 10-15% lower. read more

Extremely reluctant to review this gem of a restaurant for the simple fact that I'd rather not share this hidden secret with anyone else. The good was absolutely delicious. I had the butter pan fried pork chops with dumpling. The sauerkraut complimented the meal well and the rye bread was great for cleaning the platte afterward. If you have special dietary needs or allergies DO NOT EAT HERE! They will not substitute anything for what you are unable to eat, disregard your needs and still charge you full price, even if you ask them not to put what you can't eat on the plate. I have over many years frequented this restaurant and have been happy with the food and service.... until now. I have had to change my diet due to health reasons and found myself unable to eat the 'starchy' sides that were the options. I asked to get a little more salad (which comes with the meal) to makeup for not getting one of the sides I couldn't eat. I was told that the salad was complementary so they can't increase the size, which made no sense at all as the menu stated it came with salad and a choice of the 4 items I'm not allowed to eat. The description of the dish I ordered said that it came with sauerkraut or red cabbage, both items I could eat, so I requested that I get both or more of one to make up for not getting the 'starch' side. I was told 'No, we just don't do that'. The only reason we didn't leave then was because my friend had her heart set on schnitzel. I settled, and said to put the starch side in a separate bowl so I could give it to my friend so that at least I got the amount of food that they are charging me for. I thought the matter was settled, but when the salad arrived almost a quarter of what was on the plate was potato salad, which they already knew I couldn't eat and they didn't even tell me that when I ordered it, which was after clearly stating my food limitations. When I pointed this out to the waiter he just shrugged and offered no apology at all. What would have happened if I had a life threatening food allergy to a substance that I couldn't readily see? Would they disregard the information, serve it anyway and potentially risk a life? The food (that I could eat) was still tasty, the only reason I gave them any rating at all, but I will unfortunately not be returning because of thier inflexibility of accommodating my dietary needs. read more

Extremely Disappointed!! This has always been our go to restaurant for great food. Not any more! Apparently the place has a new owner and it shows, In the quality of food. The goulash soup was tasty, but thin - no crackers The pork schnitzel was greasy and overcooked and the accompanying Viennese pasta was mushy amd watery. I lived in West Germany from 1983-87 when my dad was stationed there with RCAF. As a result, we made quite a few trips to Austria. This restaurant is very reminiscent of the gasthauses that we would eat in - the decor, hearing the chef pound on the veal to tenderize it, right down to having an Austrian waitress! The food is fabulous! Exactly like the food that's made in Austria! always go with either my folks or a friend that I met in Germany because it always reminds of the good times there. read more

The Bauernschmaus is one of my favorite restaurants in the city - we do all of our family dinners there. It is an incredibly charming little family run business. When you walk through the doors, you are immersed into the atmosphere and culture; it truly is an experience. My favorite dish is the Paprika Hendel (chicken with paprika sauce), potatoes, and a side of sauerkraut. If you like sauerkraut, you have to have it here because it is phenomenal! The menu items are named in German but the descriptions of the food are in English. The meal starts with fresh buns and rye bread, followed by a salad that is to die for! My family has been trying to get the recipe for about 20 years now! The service is always great and the staff are friendly. I love everything about The Bauernschmaus. It's a pretty well-kept secret except to those who frequent it. And those who do, are loyal customers who eat there on a regular basis for the many reasons I have listed above. Check it out! What a fun experience! The restaurant is like a quaint home outside and the servers were SO nice. I tried the parmaschitzel with dumpling and the pork roast with red cabbage. The salad served with scalloped potatoes was a nice appy with a delcious sour sauce and just a bit of decadent goodness. The parmaschnitzel had a nice crunch and a deliciously strong cheesy flavour, but the dumpling was on the slightly tougher side. The roast pork had some delcious streaks of fat, but sometimes the fat was a bit chewy. Personally I found the red cabbage too sweet but perhaps some like it that way. I had no idea we had a dedicated German restaurant in the city. You ever have a friend in your group that is ethnically different that you try to learn everything about their culture? Well I'm that guy. Not that guy, the other guy. The guy that's pestering the guy who's different. Our German friend suggested this place for News Years Eve and I did not know what to expect. It's quite easy to miss on 99 street so make sure you slow your roll. Parking was dicey as the restaurant is situated beside many other smaller stores and for whatever reason the strip mall was packed on the last day of 2014. When you enter, the only thing missing is the clashing of beer steins that would make it complete. Really warm lighting bouncing off walls hung with European style paintings and signs. Seating is quite packed so make sure you make reservations. I'm not sure if it's standard but the only dining menu was a 3 course menu for $29: a salad, a choice of soup and a choice of entrée. I ordered the goulash soup (not goulag as my German friend pointed out as that's a prison. Yes, I'm that guy) and the zigeunerschnitzel with dumpling and vegetables as a side. As previous reviewers have noted, service does take quite a long time. The first salad didn't quite roll out until an hour into a party of 7 service. Thank goodness they gave us the gift of bread and butter. The goulash was very delicious. The vegetables were not overcooked and the pork/chicken were stewed just right. The broth was very flavorful and I kinda wish I didn't two hand the bowl. You know what i'm talking about when you're drinking delicious soup. I think because my entrée had the word schnitzel in it, I raised my expectations for the dish. In reality I became a little deflated when it merely was breaded pork. There wasn't any flair or excitement to it. Unfortunately, I'd have to compare it to a lunchtime cafeteria. It was very average tasting and honestly not even hot. I wasn't sure what to expect with the dumpling. When I think dumpling, I always refer to an Asian one. The German dumpling was huge like Nikki Minaj's video (My anaconda DON'T). Unfortunately, it tasted a little bland, like a big ball of breaded stuffing. I can totally appreciate the home-cooked vibe from this place and I'd love to come back and try more authentic dishes. I did not know about anything about authentic German cuisine until I met my SO. He took me here for our first Valentine's Day. We've been back many times to celebrate other occasions throughout the years. It is Edmonton's best kept secret as it's already a busy place without being advertised. Reservations are highly recommended as walk-ins would be turned away. My fiance's all-time favourite is their Farmer's feast. It's got almost everything. Huge portions! They also have got something for vegetarians, but not for vegans. (Deep fried cheese and fried mushrooms; delicious when dipped in ketchup!) I love their salad. Maybe it's their secret dressing, but I always wished there was more salad. I usually get their dumplings to go with my main course. Yum! If you are able to come hungry, start with their paprika goulash -- it is to die for! I also agree a previous reviewer in regards to the Paprika Hendel; it is delicious. Music is always gorgeous -- classical and very fitting to a nice family dinner or a romantic dinner for two. He makes a reservation, or he takes his chances and walks in, hoping that a table is available. He is seated and given a menu, from which he makes a selection of the dishes offered. He eats. He pays the bill after hopefully enjoying the meal, and leaves. The Role Of The Restaurant. The restaurant owner sets up shop in the location he can afford which he thinks will be handy for his hoped-for clientele. He hires staff and orders food. When customers arrive, he greets them and seats them at a table. After they have ordered, IT IS THE RESTAURANT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO ACTUALLY SERVE THEM SOME FOOD!!! Made reservations here for my wife and myself at 6 o'clock. Arrived promptly and were waved in the general direction of an empty table. There were 2 servers working hard, since there were two tables of 8-10 diners each as well as a few other tables, but the restaurant was by no means full. No menus or water for a half-hour, despite at least two apologies... "Sorry for the wait. We'll be with you soon." Menus came, I ordered soup and we both ordered entrees. Another half-hour wait... More apologies.... "Your soup should be out any minute now..." Disgusted, we got up to leave. Magically, a bowl of soup appeared from around the corner. So we sat back down again. The soup was lukewarm and extremely peppery! Salads and entrees came rather quickly. We ate and got the heck out of there, AND WE WON'T BE BACK!!! Over an hour to get a bowl of soup to a patron's table just isn't acceptable service!!! read more

I can see some complains on Yelp about slow service. Come on, guys, it's not a fast-food, their meals are so good, that it takes a bit of time to prepare them. To me, the waiting time is quite the same as in any non-fast-food restaurant. Honestly, I love this place badly. My parents were in town for a visit and wanted German food. None of the authentic German places were open or had a table, so we settled for Austrian food. I'm SO glad we did m the food here is awesome. Be prepared to spend a bit of money when you come, but the food is worth the price. It's a pretty cozy place, maybe a bit dated and worn but the staff is super friendly so it has a grandmas house feel to it. The menu is in both German and English is which is handy, and fun to learn German words. We went at lunch on a Friday and it was mostly seniors but we were seated right away. If you order the special of the day, then the value proposition is good. The bread rolls that they bring out complements of the house are poor quality and they belong in some kind of greasy spoon, not an establishment of this calibre. Perhaps the proprietors can try to get some kind of arrangement set up with the nearby Artistic Bake Shop. They offer very good authentic German bread products. The sauce ladled over my cutlet used canned or bottled mushrooms, which surprised me. This may be typical of German cooking, though, and Northern European cuisines do tend to make used of picked and preserved foodstuffs. My water glass was not refilled once, nor was I asked whether I wanted a refill. It's a good thing that I'm a real sipper when it comes to my water, as I managed to get to the very end of my meal without requiring a refill. All in all and despite the fact that German food has never really excited me that much, I think that Bauernschmaus Restaurant merits consideration. Recommended. read more

This was one of our favorite restaurants since arriving in Edmonton over a year ago. The food was truly wonderul and the ambiance was like being in Bavaria. However, I took out of town friends there for lunch with reservations and waited over an hour for the salad and drinks. I complained and was told it was due to only one cook and many walk in customers which came in prior to my reservation. If you can stand to wait this long, more power to you. I love this place!! My husband introduced it to me years ago when we were dating, and we try to go back a couple times a year. Small, cozy restaurant with an authentic, family run atmosphere. Have always had a good experience here. Their berry studel is amazing!! After the birth of our daughter, I was craving the strudel, so my husband convinced them to allow for dessert takeout (which they apparently don't do), and he brought it to me in the hospital - it's that good!!!
