Really enjoy this place, and it is great to come here for lunch because they have some really good deals. You can choose a main and two sids for under 20 bucks. So we went ahead and did this. My husband decided on the beef sandwich and lemon potatoes and Ceasar salad. I went with the open face beef gyro with lemon potatoes and the chicken rice soup. Food came in a reasonable time. Food was good. Although both my husband and I felt the beef in the sandwich was overwhelming mustardy in taste. So if you don't like mustard don't order this sandwich. Lemon potatoes were flavourful and tender, and the salad was fresh and well dressed. My gyro was delicouis and had a generous amount of tender meat. Both the potatoes and soup were fresh and flavourful. The soup did not look too encouraging, but delivered in flavour. Our server was friendly and helpful and seemed proud of their menu and food. I am a Celiac so my options are limited. I like the dolamdes and my go to meal is chicken souvlaki no pita with greek salad and potatoes. My husband raves about their pizza. Lovely first time experience dining in this location. Quiet enough that our friend with hearing aids didn't complain about not hearing what we were saying but still had lovely music in the background. It was a Monday night so I imagine they're busier during the days, as we were one of three tables while we dined in. The decor items was lovely amongst all the oil lamps displayed. It felt like we stepped into another world with the colours compared to all the safe neutral restaurants in the city. The two serving us I think were the owners and were quite lovely to take a group photo for us. Jokingly he said we need to be more excited for the photo and the lady took over the photo opp pretty fast to make sure he didn't convince us to go on the bar or something extra crazy (her words, lol!). Later in the evenings no reservations are required (at least for a table of 4). Options of raised benched tables and tables that are directly on the floor. Door was propped open so I didn't even look for the option of an automatic door but I'm pretty sure the door width would be good for walkers & wheelchairs to get through. They do close at 8 pm, so make sure to be there & ordering before 7 pm or you'll feel really rushed (as this isn't a meal that comes out really fast). They do take-out at this location (as I noticed a few people drop in to pick up supper, which is always a good sign in my mind) and the website mentions delivery option too and linked to skip the dishes. The meal itself was enjoyed by all. We all thought our main course options were generously plated. However, there are a few things that left it a 4 vs 5 star experience (for me, I forgot to poll the table). There was no specials mentioned to us when we were seated or while taking our order. Even though we only wanted to start with water while looking at the menu, no other drink suggestions were given or opportunity to order something else as the meal went on. It was assumed that the one coffee ordered right at the start was all. Water was refilled regularly but I don't recall a coffee pot coming out to refill my friend's coffee. He didn't ask for the splenda later on so I don't think he got more than a cup. We were all aware they closed at 8 pm, so we got everyone seated at 6:30 pm (bit later than planned but they weren't taking reservations and that's just how the evening turned out). However, from the start I picked up on the vibe that they wanted to close even earlier than 8 pm. This was one of the reasons why we didn't order dessert. Meals themselves were generous. The Saganaki we had to start mentioned in the menu that it is pan fried. In other restaurants it is cooked at the table so it's super soft as you're eating it right away. This however was pan fried in the kitchen and by the time it got to us it was stiffer and definitely chewy. We basically cut in in chunks and definitely wasn't the texture I was so excited about having the others try (so I felt bad about that recommendation). The Greek salad was an interesting side. It was a tasty version of a Greek salad but I expected to have more than one olive. I don't need a whole plate of them but a few more would of been nice. Both of the Greek salads ordered as sides had only one olive. Like a centrepiece. Caesar salad was what one would expect. The carrots on my plate were sweeter which was a lovely pairing with the rice & prawns. The Tastziki has a good consistency and flavour. Overall everyone was happy with their meal choices (spanakopita, chicken souvlaki, chicken musaka and jumbo prawns) and we were quite full. The atmosphere was lovely and it did help give the vibe we were celebrating our friend's birthday. So overall we were decently happy with the restaurant choice and probably would choose to come back for a shared appetizer option or a lighter lunch. read more

Oil Lamp has been on my hit list for the longest time. I've passed by it SO many times but for some reason or another, it's never been top priority to check out. Not sure why because it's so close to downtown and Chinatown, which I always seem to be passing through these days. Well, with some encouragement/gentle nudging from Fern (who loves Oil Lamp), we went to check out OL for a Thursday lunch. The inside is way nicer than you'd expect given the outside facade. The interior is very Greek with typical white and blue colours. There's even some exposed brick along parts of the wall. It has a rustic taverna style to it that I found very endearing. It's strange how there aren't many Greek places in town to eat at. If you're thinking of Koutouki's or Yianni's, we clearly can't be friends. I also liked how spacious the place was with several large comfy booths to hold larger groups. We were given the regular menu but we were here for the lunch deals.Surprised to see there were several options to choose from. Most of them fall at the $12.50 mark but steak and roasted lamb were $15.50. - Marinated chicken souvlaki ($12.50) - toasted pita bread with chicken and a side of tzatziki sauce. The tzatziki is addictive - if you like garlic, you'll love it. One small plastic container might not be enough. You also get to choose two sides - everyone ended up picking the Greek salad and roasted potatoes. Make sure you get the potatoes! They were incredibly tender, succulent and lemony. Just a perfect infusion of citrusness. The Greek salad had tomatoes, olives, green peppers, onion and feta. Ferns always gets the chicken souvlaki when she comes here and thoroughly enjoyed it. - Calamari ($12.50) - the calamari was also delicious. Not greasy with a great bite and lightly fried. - Keftede ($12.50) - I went with the keftede which consisted of three meatballs in a tomato sauce over a small bed of rice. I wasn't expecting any rice so that was a nice bonus! The meatballs were tender and moist. You could cut through them without a knife but they were still binded well enough that they didn't crumble. - Roasted lamb ($15.50) - Bbop's bud went with the roasted lamb, which was my second choice. The roasted lamb looked like roast beef doused in gravy sauce that you get at buffets. Definitely wasn't the type of roasted lamb that I was envisioning. He ate everything up so it must have been tasty. Everyone enjoyed their lunches except that a day later, Bbops and I were both on death row. The only connection that we could link our sickness/food poisoning to was our lunch at Oil Lamp and let me just say, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It was just awful. It's so wonderful to see all these great places on 97th Street including this restaurant. We arrived around noon and there were a few tables available. We were seated in a booth for 2 which was cozy and not too cramped. I also liked how they had coat racks available. I didn't look at the menu too much as I saw they had a variety of lunch specials. I decided on the marinated chicken souvlaki. You can choose from 2 salads or vegetables to accompany your meal which already comes with potatoes. The food was excellent. The ceasar salad dressing was a bit too creamy and had too much cheese but it was good. I loved the potatoes and the chicken was plump and tasty and not too dry and overcooked. There was about 5 pieces served on the skewer along with tomatos and onions on pita. There was plenty of food and for $10.50, it was a great deal. If I'm in the area, I would definitely be back. My only concern is that it gets busy and sometimes the server can forget a few things, but they are only minor. read more

Well this is a first for me. I have never been to an authentic Greek Diner before. Restaurants - yes but diners -no. I came here for lunch one day with a friend during the work week. We got there before the mad rush. The servers had their jobs cut out for them but we had no complaints considering how busy it was. The decor is obviously Greek but it has that small diner feel with the booths, small tables, the long bar and service counter when you first walk in. I would have to say this is what I liked the most about this dining experience - the laid back and familiar atmosphere. I got the feeling this place has been a staple in the neighborhood for some time. We ordered the pita bread and hummus. The pita bread was delicious! I loved how it was baked in olive oil and a bit of sea salt. The hummus was great too. Just the right combination of lemon, garlic and olive oil. I would have to say this was the best part of our meal. My friend ordered the Moussaka which is a delicious baked eggplant, tomato and minced meat dish topped with a white sauce. I was able to sample it and it was good. It was a little more bland compared to others I have had. I ordered the lemon chicken soup and a Greek salad. Both were satisfactory. The greens weren't as fresh as I would have liked. With that being said, I was still satisfied with my meal once all was done. The next time I come, I will try one of their lunch specials. I would say that this is a good lunch option if you work in the downtown core. It's nice to escape to Greece, even if it is only for an hour. read more

After driving here from Banff we checked into hotel and decided to get food delivered. There's a lot of Mediterranean food where we live and we eat it often. The food was quite good and the portions are huge! I ordered what I thought would be enough for two people and it was enough for 4. Meatballs were a little dry as kofta frequently is, as there is little fat. But it came with tsaziki and pita and was tasty. I liked the fact that there was a coat rack near my table. The staff member who served me was really prompt to provide service and the child playing in the restaurant reminded me that it must be a family business. Oil Lamp got my business this weekend when, after an extensive online search I concluded that it was one of the only sit-down Greek restaurants open for lunch on a Saturday. Not wanting to satisfy my Greek food craving with a food court quick stop, I decided to take my husband and friends on an adventure to a part of town we don't venture to often. We arrived for noon, and were the first to be seated. The hostess was very warm and friendly, with quick and attentive service. Despite being located in a somewhat seedier area of town, the restaurant was very clean (they were just finishing up cleaning as we arrived), and decorated as one would expect for a Greek restaurant. The menu included all of the dishes usually found at Greek restaurants including appetizers of hummus, dolmades, keftedes, etc. There was a lunch menu with selections such as gyros, chicken souvlaki, and other similar dishes. The lunches came with a sufficient helping of Greek salad and lemon potatoes. I tried the gyros lunch special ($13.95), and found the portion size to be more than ample, the salad to be perfectly dressed and the lemon potatoes to be some of the best I've ever had. The only downside was that the tzatziki was a bit runny, which ended up making quite a mess as I was eating my gyro wrapped in pita. My fellow diners had differing opinions than my own however- my husband found his gyro on a pita to be too greasy, another friend's lemon rice was very overpowering, and the final friend's beef sandwich lacked flavour. This is one of those "diamond in the rough" restaurants in Edmonton. It's open at lunch on the weekends which seems unique compared to the other Greek counterparts around the city. As well, the price was very reasonable compared to the more expensive Koutouki or It's All Greek to Me! It's worth the trip to check this out if you're looking for value and friendly service. read more

Just popped into a restaurant I have been waiting to try. This is a perfect spot for dinner before a Winspear or Citadel Theatre show. It is a Greek restaurant and the food is scrumptious. The decor is warm and very Greek. I love the decor. It is a very clean restaurant, well taken care of. We ordered the chicken souvlaki. Very fresh and delicious. Their tzatziki sauce is fresh and flavourful. I just wish it came to the table in a glass dish instead of a small plastic container. The chicken was fresh and well seasoned. The fried cheese appetizer was perfect on a cold day. The roasted lamb was good-sized portion served with roasted potatoes and a salad. The chicken souvlaki was very tender. Three friends and I arrived here on a Friday night looking for a good dinner. Unknowingly we arrived just a few minutes before closing, however, the lovely hostess (and by 'hostess' I mean front of the house one woman show) assured us that they had no problem staying open a bit longer to accommodate us. The decor is rather interesting, rather homey with various knickknacks throughout the room. The service from our hostess was warm, attentive, and prompt. We shared a hummus platter to start with and it was very good, plenty of garlic, and nice soft fresh warm pita. Two of us had the baked lasagna, it arrived bubbling and sizzling, a nice sized portion, and it tasted delicious. Only complaint was that the garlic bread was made from plain brown bread. One other friend had the chicken souvlaki and one the calamari dinner. The chicken souvlaki was huge! Four big skewers with sides. Both were very happy with the taste, With a couple beer added on the bill came to around $90, pretty good for four people. Overall a very good experience, I would just suggest they stay open later on weekends. We will be back for sure. read more

Perhaps the Greek Food in Vancouver is a bit much to live up to - no matter where I go, I find myself disappointed. Or perhaps there are just too many mediocre Greek restaurants elsewhere. I should note that my wife is a huge fan of this place, particularly their lemon potatoes and their tzatziki, both of which are homemade. She likes their Spanakopita as well. But I haven't been as thrilled about a few of the dishes I've ordered. It's rare that I don't like a Caesar Salad, but for some reason, I don't like the one here. Perhaps it's the odd texture of the bacon bits they use, or perhaps it's the cheese. But there was something off about it. And normally I love Saganaki, but I found mine to be a bit tough. And the pita bread they served with the meal was stale. I should note that I had both the saganaki and the pita on a Saturday night, when there were only a couple of other parties eating in the restaurant. On most weekdays, the restaurant is bustling and I imagine the food is a bit fresher. Also on that Saturday night, I ordered meatballs, which I found to be a bit too chewy. But I liked the flavour, and enjoyed the accompanying tzatziki. read more

I really liked the Greek salad: they did a bit of a different take on the dressing which I enjoyed and there was plenty of veggies and feta. The lemon potatoes were tasty, however the spanakopita left a bit to be desired. The filling was dry and bland and had to be lathered in tzatziki to be enjoyed. My pal had the Tsatsiki that was served with warm pita bread, however when it cooled it was rock hard. The birthday girl had the nooner pizza. Can't go wrong with oven fired pizza. We went to the Oil Lamp with friends on a Saturday night based on Yelp reviews and on other sites. I was under whelmed by the experience. Some of the items on the menu were unavailable, such as the octopus. It appears that Edmontonians are quite unadventurous and the Oil Lamp had to throw out unused product too frequently. I didn't see retsina on the wine list (my quirky taste) but was assured that they did indeed have a house retsina. From a lack of that refreshing pine taste, I suspect that I got a mediocre house white instead. Service was also slow (only one on duty - it was a slow night. Also, the list of available desserts was much too short so we went home and had our own dessert. On the good side, what was available was quite well done. Three of us had the lamb and the fourth had shrimp. No complaints. Also, the server was very friendly and provided us with a history of the building. Overall, a mixed experience read more

Also had a piece of baklava - that was okay, very sweet, but I guess they're supposed to be like that. I like the interior - a little mismatched but open, spacious, and a lot of interesting decorations from Greece, including oil lamps :). My friend and I were the only ones dining so the service was pretty good. I would say the food is good but the fact that the service is terrible, makes it hard to give a fair rating on food. I wanted Tzatziki for lunch, and pointed to that item on the menu, and the waitress came out with hummus and tried to say that I pointed to hummus on the menu. My friend confirmed that she saw/heard me point to Tzatziki. Glasses of water was poured for us, but we were never asked if we wanted something else to drink. We both each ordered pizza, and after 10 minutes, got told there was no more pizza. So my friend settled for chicken soulvaki and I settled for grilled prawn. The grilled prawn came out but it was smothered in some kind of tomato sauce. Not what I envisioned or expected. Nonetheless, I dug around for the prawns. Our bill was difficult to read, and my friend's food was just 11.25 but the waitress put some other amount on the debit machine instead of discussing it with my friend. Mostly terrible. The lamb was leather. Not sure if they buy mutton and cook it or buy acceptable lamb and let it sit until it becomes mutton. Also very salty. Soup was bland. Potatoes were had a measure of the lemon that should have been in the soup. Even the soda was not hooked up properly (little syrup). Service was remedial. They probably do brisk business because they are across from a courthouse. They shouldn't interpret that as approval of their effort. read more
