Love this place. It seems hidden amoung the hustle and bustle of Downtown. Parking is a huge pain, this is why we don't go more often. I love the inside of this place, elegant, calming, and welcoming. Our server was good. He was prompt and effecient. There are a lot of items on the menu, but I always get the same thing. Roasted duck with dumplings and to start with a dill pickle soup. My friend went with the Natural Schnitzel her starter was a salad. My soup was delicious, nice and light and fragrent. It had the right amout of acid in it. My friend really enjoyed her salad. My duck was as delicous as usual. Two large pieces with sauerkraut. I would like to see a few potatoes in it though. My friend enjoyed her schnitzel. We ended the night having crepes which were rich. I had the Crêpe "a'la King" butter crêpe with Frangelico. A very hidden little downtown spot to grab a bite to eat before a show at the Citadel. This place has cozy vibes and with that huge painting on the wall and cushy seats it's got nice vibes to settle and enjoy a drink in. On a Thursday night at 530pm it was more empty than we expected but by 6pm it was bumping and getting full. With the smaller seating area a reservation is still a good idea. Our server was super fast and surprisingly the food we ordered came out fast too. Made it nice so we could happily enjoy our food and drink and still have time for dessert. We ordered the Schnitzel Corden Bleu- being advised on the menu as an unforgettable experience we had to try this one. Nicely breaded and adding an extra squirt of fresh lemon was so perfect for this dish! Half a Duck was amazing! The duck was tender and so flavourful. Paired with some really nice sauerkraut and a couple slices of bread. This is the dish I would have again or recommend. We also ordered the Trout but it had been substituted for Atlantic Char. A nice fish, good portion. But the started salad that we all got was the best! The dressing was delightful and a perfect amount! With cheese and fresh tomatoes this one was a hit at the table. Made reservations for 5:15PM for 3 people on a Thursday for my sisters birthday. Didn't need the reservation. Place was 5% full when we arrived and only got 40% full by the time we left (6:30PM). Had to park in a paid parking lot = extra $10. Atmosphere was nice and we were not rushed and food came super fast. Waitress was nice and refilled our water several times. Tried a Innis & Gun beer which was decent. All our meals came with House Green & Tomato Salad - was 10/10 good. Great dressing and nice to have something to nibble on. We ordered 3 meals and then all sampled each one. Half duck: duck was 10/10 super tender, not dry, tastes like chicken, sauerkraut was very good and portion was huge, bread was soft and fresh. Schnitzel "Cordon Bleu": 7/10. Breading as good but tastes more like chicken Cordon Bleu than Schnitzel. Next time I would just go classic. Trout "Jizerka" wasn't available but waitress said it was changed to Alaskan ...I am blanking but waitress highly recommended it so we got it: 8/10. Fish was pretty bland. Well cooked - not dry but just not my preference. Came with pan fried potatoes which we salty and perfectly cooked. Mushrooms were also 10/10 good. Dessert we tried the Strawberry Crepe: 6/10, crepe was a little too doughy for me, too few strawberries for my liking, and I prefer my crepe with custard in it. Lots of whip cream though. Waitress knew we came in for birthday and put a candle in it for my sister. Overall maybe we just had poor food choices but everything was cooked well (expect the crepe maybe). read more

This is such an amazing place, especially when you consider that it's been part of Edmonton's food scene for nearly (or over?) 50 years... one of my first jobs was bussing tables at the Steakboard on the Boardwalk, and we used to come to Bistro Praha after work - it was the after-hours 'club' of the day! They didn't lose any of their charm when they moved to this current location, either! Some of the best Eastern European food (and beer, and wine) you can find in YEG. Strudels, schnitzels, lamb, all with classical music and the beautiful mural... and some incredible faves include their dill pickle soup (OMFG it's good!) and their tartar, possibly the best in the city. Service is also amazing, pleasant and timely, and if you're adventurous, ask your server for their recommendation - and then just go with it! read more

It has the vibe that a grandma is cooking back there cursing in another language that its not good enough for her. But the dishes are fantastic. The fried cheese was gooey and crispy. The snitzel huge and tasty. The sides were so delish. The apple struesel was one of a kind. It tasted like homemade pie baked literally 5 min ago. I felt like I was trasported to eastern europe. I met friends for a weekday lunch and I would recommend reservations as the restaurant was almost full when we were there. I arrived before the reservation time but was seated promptly and had water before the others arrived. The tables seemed a bit close together but there was no issue hearing others' conversations. There was just the one main server who had a bit of help. But I didn't seem to notice as the service was good, but we were also not in a rush to eat and leave and enjoyed a leisurely meal and visit. I decided on the 1/2 order filet of sole for $14.95. I didn't know it came with a salad before the main entree. The lettuce and tomatoes were tasty with the sweet dressing. Some bites were a bit too sweet though. The fish was flaky and not overly floured. The pan fried potatoes were good and I like mushrooms but these had too much butter for my liking so I didn't eat them all. My friends enjoyed their large salads and Schnitzel. Without a doubt, one of Edmonton's undisputed institutions when it comes to restaurants is Bistro Praha. Open since 1977, this is a place where you will find culinary fare from the European country of Czechia. Avenue Magazine named Bistro Praha the Best Tried & True Restaurant 2020 and I think that this award sums things up pretty well. Located Downtown, the restaurant was opened by Frantisek Cikanek (who has since passed on). His goal was to open a place where one could eat familiar Czech delicacies and hear classical music. And let me just say that his legacy lives on and the restaurant continues to keep his vision alive. I visited on a Saturday evening and excitedly entered the comfortable yet stylish space. I loved the modern ceiling which makes the dining room feel fresh and current. Meanwhile, there are still plenty of touches that will take you back to the "old country." They have impressive chandeliers, lots of landscape art on the walls (including one giant piece on the back wall), and plenty of greenery. The space feels simple and easy, yet elegant all at the same time. I absolutely noted the classical music that was playing and it truly elevated the experience. Our server was lovely and happy to assist in guiding us through the menu. As someone with an Eastern European background myself, much of the menu felt very familiar to me. In fact, Poland (one of the countries of my heritage) and Czechia share a border. So the fact that I was getting vibes that reminded me of my grandmother's cooking made a lot of sense. The menu covers a lot of ground and you'll be able to find dishes inspired by not only Czechia, but other nearby European countries as well. While I wanted to try just about everything, I did my best to select a range of dishes from various parts of the menu. Once ordered, the food was delivered to our table lightening quick. I'm not sure if this is the norm but it was pretty impressive. The Starters section included Pickled Rolled Herring (Served with sour cream - $7.95) which I had to have because it's a dish that I grew up with and feel quite emotional about. However, the fried breaded cheese did not go unnoticed and I will most certainly order it on my next visit. My two favourite flavours: salty and fishy. That's straight-up what pickled herring delivers. I will say that this dish takes a certain kind of person. It's somewhat of an acquired taste but if you're like me and have been eating this stuff since you were a kid, this is some of the best. The herring was intensely flavourful, powerfully pickled, and wrapped around a pickle... Because this is NOT a "less is more" situation. I loved the big heap of sour cream, which I don't actually think I've used as a condiment with these before. This version was perfection and each bite took me away to a happy place. (My mouth is watering just thinking about it!) There's a Soups & Stews section and that's where I found the Bistro Beef Goulash (Slavic peasants created this stew using three basic ingredients: beef, onions and a healthy dose of paprika - $13.75). Again, I noticed the Prague sauerkraut soup and plan to try that next time. Originating in Hungary, this stew was served with rye bread (Eastern Europeans = rye bread with everything) and was warm and comforting. The deep rust colour celebrated the copious amounts of paprika used and the tender beef was plentiful. This dish felt simple and reminded me of home. For the main course I had to go straight for one of the main items that Bistro Praha is famous for: Wiener Schnitzel (Selected cut, prepared according to a famous recipe from old Vienna, lightly breaded. Served with potato salad & lemon - $24.95 for a full order). All of the main courses include a small "Jeremy" Salad (Romaine lettuce, marinated tomatoes and onions in white vinaigrette, cheese and house herb dressing) which arrived first. At first I barely registered this salad, considering it a bit of a "brush off" item. But then I tasted it. This had to have been one of the best "included" salads that I have ever received. Bright and fresh, the tomatoes were like some kind of magic. They were so juicy! Was this simply because of being marinated?? Because this is a game changer. I loved the deliciously acidic dressing and the cheese on top totally worked for me. Wiener Schnitzel originates from Austria, another country that borders Czechia. Now, I've had schnitzel before... But not like this. I added the Homemade Sauerkraut ($4.95) to the order because it felt like the right thing to do for maximum enjoyment. Made of a thin, breaded, pan-fried veal cutlet, the breading must stay dry so that it can be "souffléd." I cannot imagine Bistro Praha doing a better job of this. I squeezed some lemon over my piece and was blown away by the impossibly light breading, ultra-tender veal, and overall delicate yet flavourful experience. Where has this been my whole life? Nearly finishing up a 2 week tour of Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, the Icefields, and Jasper, I ended up in Edmonton as a side tour back to Calgary. Needless to say, in 2 weeks, I've eaten my way through Alberta. This place, along with Wallister Stube at the Fairmont Chateau in Lake Louise, are my two favorite places during this trip. Ordered the caviar for appetizer; the steak tartare; and schnitzel. Was initially a bit surprised when the caviar came out with ham and potato salad but was glad for it later. The caviar tasted good but the potato salad was the bomb - not too salty and with the sauce more on top than mixed in. For the main part of the meal, there are two sizes (half and full) and thinking European size, I was about to order full for both entrees. Thankfully Shane recommended the Half sizes because sheesh, these came out more along with lines of American sizes. Ended up sharing the tartare and taking the schnitzel to go for late dinner. Nearly forgot to mention that both came with salad so mom had the tomato and onion salad and I had the green salad. Both were light and refreshing. The tomato though was great and if I had known, I would have ordered that as well. Momma and I mixed up the two salads and everything worked out. The appetizer and salads likely contributed to being too stuffed to finish everything and order dessert. In light of how much food, the price was more than reasonable. Wow, Bistro Praha, where have you been my past 13 years in Edmonton? Or maybe, I should be asking my husband, "Why have you kept your dirty little mistress from me so long?!?" I came here a couple of weeks ago, for the first time, with a group of Yelpers after an event ended. The place was adorable - I felt like I was visiting my Gramma minus the plastic cloth chair covers. We came H-U-N-R-Y (No, you read that right... We were so hungry, I ate the G). Anyhow, we ordered the pan fried cheese, two kinds of schnitzels (cordon blue and weiner), escargot, cabbage soup, the steak tar tar, and the Austrian apple struedel. The schnitzels were HUGE, we seriously didn't even finish them and the beef tar tar was among the best I have ever had. Seriously, we had to order more fried bread. That stuff was like crack... REALLY! 2 bottles of wine later - we were a very happy crowd. The only item that didn't WOW me was the Austrian apple streudel; nothing wrong with it, just not my thing. Our server was attentive, friendly, and informative - what more could you ask for? I will definitely be back! Greeting was almost offsetting as she told us to sit by the window and then took off but our server changed our opinion. Unique, rustic and quaint seating with a small story of the restaurant on the back of the menu. Small starter salad but fresh! First time having steak tartare and it was delicious! Full order was too much for me to finish and I have a healthy appetite. Loved the options they had with it: mint, garlic, lemon, tomato, sprouts and small green things(caper berries). Deep fried bread to help you. Definitely a hands on delight for me. My wife had the duck and it was excellent. The best she had. Crispy and not dried out. Comes with a ton of sauerkraut homemade with bacon and onion to flavour it. Also had a dumpling style bun. My niece had Wiener schnitzel it was yummy. Best with the lemon. An ice cream scoop of their potato salad. They recommend the crepes but opted for the apple strudel which I overheard was made fresh daily but the one we had was not fresh. Drink menu is great and you can go for the $225 bottle of champagne if that's your style. Overall, first time and I will go back to try the rest of the menu. Bistro Praha caught our eyes when Joe and I had the Hungarian sausage on the last Dishcrawl we attended. The rest of the menu looked interesting and last Sunday we managed to finally give it a go. During my Europe trip before I graduated, I actually visited Prague for a couple of days. It was one of the more interesting cities I had been to, rich in history and architecture and the old world Eastern Europe feel versus the Westernized worlds of the UK and France in comparison. For some reason, I can't remember what I ate there as my main meals, and all I remember are sausage stands open late for the nightclub crowd. It'd be interesting to see what Czech food is like, albeit in Edmonton! For a Sunday night, the restaurant was doing pretty well - most tables occupied around 7pm. Inside, the dining area is divided into two sections. We were seated in the main area, a prominent light fixture above us from a curved ceiling, and artworks depicting the old Prague throughout. Our server was kind, very speedy, and very relaxed throughout the night. Their main specialty is schnitzel, a thinly pounded boneless meat, covered in bread crumbs and fried. Different varieties are available to order, the traditional being the Wiener schnitzel, made from veal. To cover our bases, we ordered an appetizer, two different entrees, and a dessert to share. Our appetizer was the fried breaded cheese, a Czech dish. Usually made from Hermelin or Edam, the thick cut cheese is breaded and fried, served with a tartar sauce, as was traditional during the Communist period. The crust was super crispy, not greasy at all. The cheese was Edam and just the right thickness for it to ooze out as soon as you cut into it. By itself, it tasted pretty much like hot, crispy, gooey cheese goodness. With the tartar sauce though, tasted even better! It came with a choice of potato salad or pan-fried potatoes. Our server recommended the pan-fried potatoes and thank goodness he did. So good! Medium cut slices, fried until golden brown, not greasy, and was seasoned very well. Very addictive! I love cheese... Each main entree comes with a side of green salad or tomato and onion salad. Both regular salads, nothing to get excited about. Our dinner came out rather quickly from the time of ordering. I had ordered the Wiener schnitzel, a full order (half orders available), in order to share with Joe. As a star dish of Vienna, it's also popular in Czech Republic. The portions were gigantic! I was able to get through one piece of cutlet, while Joe sized up his portion. The breading is the same as the cheese, making the veal cutlet have a crispy exterior. It was a little under seasoned for my taste, but I believe I have a very salty palate. By itself, I was missing some sort of sauce although I knew that wasn't traditional. Alternating bites with the side of potato salad helped quite a bit. Joe ordered the filet of sole. Well cooked, nicely seasoned with herbs, salt, and pepper, and a side of buttered mushrooms to accompany it. Is it just me or is the fish and mushroom combination a bit odd? I don't think I've ever had a dish with the two, mushrooms usually accompanying steaks or meats rather than seafood. Just a thought while I happily ate my portion of the fish. The pan-fried potatoes made a second appearance, although this time they seemed to be unseasoned. Not sure if this was intentional or a mistake. Otherwise, a great dish. For dessert, I was craving the banana crêpe. This was the best way the meal could have possibly ended. Our server knew we were sharing and was thoughtful enough to split the dish for us without us having to request it! The dish was super yummy, not too sweet, although the icing sugar (also known as crack cocaine to me) was there. Even the whip cream was light and airy, Joe questioning if it was Cool Whip or something house made. Absolutely loved it! I'll most definitely be returning to this restaurant when we're in the mood for something completely different from our usual eats. My favorites: the fried cheese and the banana crêpe. I'll have to try the steak tartare and roasted duck or goose next time, under "Bistro Specialties" on the menu. Cute, cozy place! read more

Bistro Praha has an artistic, bohemian feel. This is fine dining with a history -- I understand some of Edmonton's most influential people used to come here to dine and talk politics, literature, or whatever was on their minds. Lots of different kinds of people still head to this small, cozy bistro to talk, have a romantic date, or simply enjoy food that is well-prepared, with a European feel. The Bistro is known for its beef schnitzel -- tender beef fried in a light breaded coating and served with potato salad or roasted potatoes, depending on what kind you order. Another delicious entree is the grilled chicken dinner, which is a tender, juicy piece of chicken with potatoes and sauteed mushrooms. There are also a few fish dishes. You can order a half or full size of any entree - I find the half size to be more than enough. For dessert, there is a variety of fruit crepes. I had one with an entire large banana running through it, covered in whipped cream and chocolate sauce. It was almost a meal in itself. And for only five or six dollars, it was well worth it. Bistro Praha also has a variety of salads, cold cut dishes, and drinks. It is a little on the pricey side, but the atmosphere and great food justifies the cost. read more

So, the last time I was at Bistro Praha was over 40 years ago (yes, I am old). We went there today for an early Father's Day, because my 92 year old father wanted to have roast duck. After looking around for restaurants that serve roast duck we thought we'd check out Bistro Praha again. My father grew up in Poland and loves European food - so this was a good bet. The service was excellent. The food came out quickly. Unfortunately my father found the duck to be rather "tough". He was disappointed. I had the Schnitzel "Parisienne". It was fine. The potato salad was good. My wife had the Wiener Schnitzel "Corden Bleu". It too was fine. Fine means OK. Really nothing special. For these 3 meals we spent about 15-20% more than we would have at other just as nice Eastern/Central European restaurants in the Edmonton area. The food was OK - not anywhere close to great or excellent. The prices were on the high side. It may be another 40 years before we return. read more

This is a small restaurant, and the tables are quite tightly packed, no different then some of the other restaurants on Jasper Avenue. I don't think they would be able to accommodate strollers/high chairs (admittedly I didn't ask). Service was prompt and friendly, it was extremely busy but our food was served much faster then we expected. Camilla brought an extra plate of fried bread over without us asking. I first tried them when I visited during a Dishcrawl event several years ago and have only eaten a main course there once since that time... and I insisted on having more dessert as my memories of having it the first time were just that delicious! Reliably tasty central European food. I've been coming here since I was little. I was very happy when they re-opened after the fire. Luckily, they seem to be doing well in the new location. I've tried a variety of dishes on the menu. My favorites include the cabbage soup, Sarka salad, goose with dumplings, and goulash. I've never ordered the schnitzel myself, but I always have a bite of my husband's. It's very good. This is definitely a restaurant that I recommend to people. This is one of those places that I have heard a lot of people talk about but have never visited. That needs to change as they have a huge menu and after tasting some of the food I want to try more things off the menu! It was probably some of the best tar tar we have had. That is something we want to try again! The place is small but elegant. It is in the heart of downtown so parking can be a bit tricky. We came here to have some tea and try their traditional Austrian Apple Strudel; made with philo pastry and a heaping mound of whip cream! it didn't disappoint! You know that scene frm inglorious basterds where the bad guy is eating that strudel? Had dinner here the other night and was quite impressed. I've heard a lot of buzz around it and it definitely lived up to the expectation. It was my first time eating escargot in ages and I still couldn't get over my mental aversion to snails (or rather the eating of them), but my dinner date thought it was delicious, so we'll take his word for it. We also ordered a plate of appetizers that was a make-your-own-sandwich (open faced) sort of deal. The egg, meat and cheese were tasty and the pickles were AMAZING (tasted homemade). For dinner, I had the Hungarian sausages with a tomato salad, which was my favourite part of the night. The portion was just right right and the sausage was super flavourful. The salad had a sweet dressing on it, which wasn't what I was expecting, but I still enjoyed it. Overall, a great meal with quality ingredients. I'll definitely be back to explore the menu more! read more

Just had another great meal can't believe how much I like the place the service was amazingly fast and the food was excellent. The split dessert fruit they actually do whatever you ask timely and with a smile. Great wine and awesome dessert. Fresh whipped cream to die for. read more

An exceptional little place. It feels like a little piece of France. The food was excellent. I started with spicy shrimp and had steak tartar. My server was able to make excellent wine recommendations. For a casual yet classy evening this place will become one of my top choices. I would expect a place like this to be more expensive yet the price was very reasonable. read more
