We absolutely love this bakery and stop in every time we are in Leavenworth! With my husband having a German mother, he spent his childhood there, and we've perused several bakeries in town--this is the only truly authentic one. The bakery is old and small with limited seating, which actually reminds us of the authentic grab-and-go spots in Germany. We always go for the Bienenstich (bee sting cake). The server at the counter was really sweet and helpful; she cut us a big 'ole slice knowing we were sharing. We devoured that incredible slice, which delivered a perfect bite of creamy vanilla custard nestled between soft yeast cake and a crunchy, caramelized honey-almond topping. The contrast of the smooth filling and the sticky, nutty 'sting' makes for a truly memorable dessert experience, perfect every time. We also snagged a mini pretzel loaf. We were only missing mustard, but honestly, my husband said it was so good it didn't even need anything. It was fun to see the baker hard at work making bread, and the whole place smelled amazing. My husband, son and I tried Bavarian Bakery today and we cannot say enough good things about this gem of Leavenworth! The staff was lovely, the shop was warm and cozy, there was a few tables to sit at and the selection of breads, cakes and pastries was divine! We especially loved the marzipan cake and my son loved his soft pretzel. Honestly the cake was one of the best I've ever had. We spoke with the kind owner and he explained to us his devotion to use high quality ingredients which we deeply appreciated. When you have a chance to go to Dan's market, or time to head back home, please remember to stop this little bakery shop. I am not Germany, but their deserts and bread are so yummy. Too bad, I was only by myself and I could only eat so much, therefore, I could only consider what I could eat while driving the breathtaking but long boring I-90 plus little leftover for the next morning. The bakery doesn't open everyday, but good timing to stop by for snacks. The coffee is from Leavenworth, but tastes weak than I expect. But oh well, water or hot tea always matches the sweets. I will recommend to buy little bit and snack in their parking lot to make sure you have enough comfort foods before heading to the roads. Also, I just knew, if you buy over $50, you will get a free shopping bag from their bakery shop. I read up on the Bavarian Bakery which is on the edge of Leavenworth, entering from the Eastside. It's easy to get to and you don't have to fight for parking! Come EARLY, as the breads are warm! Great variety (I went around 9:30 am), though my pretzel was a bit on the harder side (will need to microwave it) - have heard mixed reviews on the pretzels, so maybe I just got one from a lesser batch. Was MORE impressed with the raisin bread! SO soft and had golden and regular raisins! Decently priced items! I would've gotten a bunch more items, but I was driving quite a distance today. Great place to try out and they bake their goods in store! Super friendly staff! Will go again when I'm in the area! read more

Fresh bread on the edge of town. They have huge pastries and baked items including apple strudel, fresh pretzels, and danishes. I ordered an apple strudel ($5.75) and a Raspberry Custard Danish ($5.50). The apple filling seemed more like apple sauce to me but at least the crust was flakey. The danish was quite rich and maybe could have been a little more flakey. The snacks were delightful regardless. Worker was friendly and chatty in the morning. The sweets were nice and prices were fairly reasonable, but what lowered their score for me was that we were in the shop eating some treats about 30 minutes before their posted closing time and the staff started putting chairs on tables and mopping the floors, pretty much rushing us and the other customers out. We used to make it a point to stop here on every trip to Leavenworth. Get our Bienenstich, and whatever yummy pastry they have. We haven't been there in a couple of years because we've always come into town late after they closing. No big deal. We stopped today, and got Bienenstich (Bee Sting cake), an eclair, a marzipan horn, and were given some pretzels as a freebie. The Bienenstich looked good in the case, but when we got to the hotel room to eat it the cream had started oozing out. I tried to cut into it (since they gave us two pieces that weren't cut apart. ALL of the cream came out beneath it, and it was very difficult to cut through the "cake" part. For those who know the cake is a yeast cake so it's a bit firmer than regular cake but this was way too hard. By the time I got through it and tried it, I had to scoop up cream to have with it. The cake literally tasted like dry bread, and the cream? It was like whipped cream with lumps in it. It was really unpleasant, and as this is my favorite thing to get in Leavenworth I was extremely disappointed. I'm German, and I've eaten a LOT of Bienenstich from not good to amazing. This is now the worst I've had. Moving to the eclair. The chocolate on top was bitter and tasted burnt. It looked like it had been brushed on and melted off. The cream was like the Bienenstich. Like whipped cream with lumps in it, not like the custard you would expect. The eclair itself tasted ok, but with everything else it ended up in the same place. Lastly the pretzel, which I feel bad about commenting on since we got it for free, but it was chewy and tasted burnt. Overall we were extremely disappointed, and I doubt we'll be back. I was so excited to try this bakery after reading so many positive Google reviews but our experience was not just sub par but truly NOT good. We tried several items-custard/fruit danish, glazed almond flaky croissant-type pastry, a raspberry danish and a tub of little powdered sugar lemon cookies. Everything except the lemon cookies was STALE and even after heating, just not good and not worth eating. We felt really jipped and so disappointed. Although the lemon cookies weren't actually stale, they just weren't good! I don't know if we hit them on an off day or what but I'd advise to be careful and maybe just try one or two things first and see before stocking up. Sadly, our Safeway cookie was better than anything we got there. On a positive note, we really enjoyed the young man working there. He was very nice. read more

Was looking for some real German bread and pastries on our way back home, and I remembered this place. They actually had samples of their breads to try which was great. I bought a loaf of the Light Rye Bread which tasted like the German bread I often buy at a Russian store in my area. The crust was a little harder than what I was used to, but it was still good. The pretzels were tasty, but not as soft as my kids would have liked. All of the fruit and pudding pastries we bought were not super sweet which is more authentic than other pastries bought in the States, but the dough was a bit tough and not flaky like we were hoping. I heated them up at home which helped a bit. The prices were a bit steep (almost $8 for one piece of cake), but for an occasional treat, it was worth it. This is not as fresh and plentiful as a typical bakery in Germany, but more authentic than a regular American bakery for German baked goods. read more

Almost passed this one up because of the older reviews mentioning lack of mask adherence and grumpy owners. I'm happy to report that the Covid precautions were in place and that the lady behind the counter was a delight. I had the cherry cheese and I believe I will be going back tomorrow for another! Also if you need a min to settle your nerves for the traffic into downtown, this bakery is on the edge of the downtown and has its own parking so you can walk right in and back out without a large hike. The Bavarian Bakery is on the main drag heading into Leavenworth from the east. It is easy to find and has plentiful parking. This is a big bonus compared to most other shops in Leavenworth that require you to park a few blocks away and walk or drive the main loop inside the maze, hoping there's a paid parking spot. If google maps had not been available, I think we would've given up with the maze by now. We tested out the Bavarian Bakery in the late morning, hoping to pick up a grainy bread, because the local Safeway has few options in this category. They had a handful of different breads, many of them appeared to be German varieties of white bread but they did have an oatmeal bread. In their defense, it appeared that some of their breads were already sold out by the time we got there. The oatmeal bread had a thick crust, but the interior had the soft, textured feel of a quality whole grain bread. If I was in Leavenworth any longer, I would've returned for another loaf of oatmeal bread or to try one of their other loaves. Another winning food item at the Bavarian Bakery is their pretzel. It is medium-sized, has a thin, tough crust, soft center, and is expertly salted. I probably would not order a bunch of these to eat at home, but they are a perfect snack to bring on the trails and eat after a couple of hours of hiking. This was how we ate ours. read more

Such a cute interior! Loved the pretzels on the Christmas tree. There were many different pastries that all looked super tasty as well. I ended up getting the apricot almond galet? (I think) along with a pretzel. Wasn't sure what to expect with the pretzel but it was so good! Wasn't planning on finishing it in one go but I did anyways. It was slightly disappointing that it wasn't warm at all since that would've elevated the experience but it was tasty anyways. The apricot pastry was good as well. One thing to note is that although the worker taking the order was super accommodating about dietary preference and the additional bakers in the back had answers to if the pretzel was vegan, I waited quite a while in line behind only one person to place the order. I just left the Bavarian Bakery, and within a few minutes of leaving I finished the marzipan cake and the pretzel. I loved that the marzipan cake had a ton of marzipan on it and it was not overwhelmingly sweet, as many American bakeries tend to do. I thought everything was in good balance and absolutely delicious!! The rest of the group loved what they ordered, as well. I think this is the best bakery in town. If I were to live close by, this is where I would shop for my bread. The bakery is owned by a German family and it really shows in their bakery. The MUST STOP for PRETZELS BAKERY! The closer we got to Leavenworth the more I heard the cries for pretzels from my 5 year old in the back seat. Of course we stopped just like we always do. Of course we purchased the worlds best pretzels as well as some wonderful chocolate croissants and a danish. Light conversation from the baker with the motorcycle who doesnt care for Everett (where I live) and prompt friendly service from the woman. They dont see us enough to recognize us especially since everyone in this place wares a mask like we should but, we have been comming here for years. So my mission in Leavenworth was to get a hold of the best Bretzel in WA. This seemed like the most likely place I'd find one. Having been to Germany in August 2018, I had the fondest memories of a German pretzel and was trying to recreate those memories. However, this was a bit of a fail. I mean the pretzel was fine but definitely NOT what the reviews made it out to be. Their other breads were way better in fact. Their French breads and beer breads were way more memorable. As we pulled into the parking lot we watched a girl dump out the vacuum into the dumpster. The wind caught the dirt and blew all of it back on her (completely sucky time for her). At that point we should have turned around. We walked in, the vacuum girl apologized for the mess and asked what she could get for us. We purchased a pretzel, bee sting and a chocolate dipped nut bread. We went to our car to try our bake goods.
