For those of you who are considering a custom engagement ring, I highly recommend Baxter Moerman. Let me take you through my experience. ******CLIFF NOTES AT THE BOTTOM FOR THOSE WHO HATE TO READ****** We searched for months for an engagement ring already in existence then we followed that up by getting quotes from several jewelers in and out of the area for custom rings. No one really meshed with my vibe or seemed terribly excited to execute a design like which I was describing. To be honest I first dismissed Baxter Moerman because their store front seemed too small. I urge you to learn from a stranger and not repeat my mistake. They offer a wide range of style in modern designs. There is plenty of inspiration. When we finally did meet it was very professional and approachable (two things I find difficult to attain together). There were a couple of things on the design I was especially concerned about getting just right. First I described a very specific diamond: gray and rustic, pear shaped, sizable, not completely opaque with a sort of night sky feeling (I dig the stars). The other was I had my heart set on side stones but I couldn't find many side stones on pear-shaped diamonds which I liked. They didn't have exactly what I was looking for in the shop, but they were going to a gem show the following month which would have a wide variety of ethical retailers. They called upon their return to tell us that they did find a diamond that fit my specifications but warned me that there was only one. When we finally saw it in person it was perfect. They listened to every one of my descriptors and found exactly what I was looking for. See uploaded images. Once we decided to proceed with the diamond Matt made out a few rough sketches of possible side stones. Imagine my surprise when I fell in love with one almost immediately- especially since I had searched hundreds of images for inspiration without any success. They REALLY listen to you. It took a little over a week to generate computer models of the theoretical design. It was difficult to get a computer image with a center stone which looked like my diamond so he just substituted a black one for the models. It actually worked better that way because I could only imagine the finished product, making it all that more special. As an FYI you'll get several different views of your piece I've only uploaded a few. I described the things I wanted changed- (a matte finish rose gold instead of shiny, filigree in the setting, and we changed the shape as well as position of the side stones). The second round the ring was perfect. Like I said- they really listen to you. Once I approved the final design I stepped out of the loop to let my then boyfriend figure out payment and timeline. Even though I was part of the design process I was completely surprised by the proposal time as well as the finished product itself. So don't worry about losing that experience. In the end I got exactly what I wanted and he stayed within his budget. I get comments on my ring almost daily. I love that it is modern with a nod to the past and has a very distinct Baxter Moerman design signature. Please do not hesitate to purchase or commission work from either of these fine gentlemen. I needed some help replacing my wedding ring after I damaged my knuckle in a bicycle accident (my ring no longer fits over my knuckle). Matt Baxter and Matt Moerman are two of the most down-to-earth, unpretentious young men in business in San Luis Obispo. I visited three local jewelry stores where custom work is done to determine which would get my business for rings for my late-in-life wedding. In one place, the jeweler was too busy eating his lunch to bother to talk with us; in the other, the woman had her receipt book out before I had taken a breath, trying to steer us to a purchase *that day* on a ring I wasn;t at all sure I liked. The third place I visited was Baxter Moerman Jewelry. Both Matts were breaths of fresh air!!! They took my old gold, my mother's 1942 wedding ring, and my grandfather's diamond pinky ring and created the most beautiful wedding ring I could have ever imagined. They were genuinely friendly and polite and super helpful. They helped me narrow down style ideas from different pieces that they've done and things I brought up. I really liked the design they came up with was perfect and well within our budget. All their pieces are custom made and the craftsmanship is wonderful.
