What an incredible find. Came here on 2/26/12 for the Cypress String Quartet performance and I was…read moreblown away. About once a month, Kohl Mansion hosts musical performances (chamber concerts) in the Great Hall, a very intimate setting nothing like a symphony hall. Think of a Victorian era sitting room/parlour with a gloriously high ceiling and this is what you get - musicians on a slightly raised stage in front of a (non-operational) fireplace, and just several rows of seats surrounding the stage on 3 sides. I felt like I was enjoying my favorite Beethoven string quartet in a Beauty-and-the-Beast setting. You know what I'm talking about - that scene with the Beast sitting in front of the fireplace w/ the doggy footrest? Concert performances start at 7pm, but their resident musicologist, Kai Christiansen, gives a pre-concert talk at 6pm. If you are under 30, you are really in for a treat in the form of a generous discount - their "Gen Y & Z" discount tickets are only $15, compared to $45 for adult and $42 for senior tickets. To my fellow under-30 yelpers... get on this before you make it over the 30+ hill!! The parking lot fills to capacity with concert-goers so I recommend arriving no later than 6:30pm to ensure you get a parking spot. Complimentary refreshments are served after the concert - e.g. wine, cheese, charcuterie, fruit & other finger foods. One of the best refreshment spreads I've ever seen to be honest...without sounding too gluttonous. ;) You can meet and mingle with the musicians at this post-concert reception. So glad I found this place. Can't wait to be back in the coming months.

Receptions are staffed by Mercy High School parents and students and community volunteers. The 2014-15 series will be the 32nd consecutive season, and features local, nationally and internationally-distinguished ensembles. In addition to our concert series, we provide school performances, master classes, coaching to approximately 5,000 local students as well as community outreach through our partners at the San Mateo Public Library and Peninsula Jewish Community Center. Our office, located on the campus of Mercy High School in the Kohl Mansion is open Tuesday through Thursday, but messages will be answered throughout the week. Our concerts are on Sundays, once a month October through May.

If you want your kids to advance in piano or any music instruments in a normal pace. This is not…read morethe place. The owners seem to care about fulfilling there teacher's schedule more than the students individual growth. As there are big gaps between teachers quality as well. Some are ok some are horrible. It depends on your luck. Of course they would tell you these teacher is specially selected for you base on your kid's whatever but in reality. The owners seem is the best teacher but they pick their student very selectively. Only the best will get into their schedule. Other's they don't care. I would never send my kid to music schools like that again. Will always get the individual teacher in the future. Amanda, My son got pass the ABRSM with distinction is mostly because of his hard-work. I want to add that your school and the teacher didn't informed us there will be a fourth song that needed to play during exam until a week before the actual exam. That being said. This shows how inexperience the teacher is and your school didn't bother to let us know as we have plan this months prior. My son only had a week to practice a bring new song before the exam and that really stress out the entire family and fortunately our son pulled it off. Again. All you care is fulfilling your teacher's schedule over the independent students growth as you have many students with many teachers who sometimes comes and go fairly quickly. I am not saying you don't care about your students but we feel we didn't get enough attention as we feel independent teacher would be a much better choice for parents who wants more growth for their kids in time.

Wonderful teachers! Staff respond quickly to emails. Flexible slots if there is a need to…read morereschedule your session.
