I just finished throwing away all my moldy stuff that I thought I was paying to keep safe. It turns out that this place is prone to flooding. I lost so many things I can not replace. My only relief was realizing that I had been paying for the insurance. The manager told my husband we should have paid for the insurance when he reported the damage. We were really relieved to realize that we had gotten the insurance and been paying every month for the last few years. However it turns out that the protection agreement doesn't cover flooding of any sort. I would be less angry if I didn't find out that these units had all flooded before. I guess you are supposed to ask for a unit that doesn't regularly flood? What a waste, they really don't care about your possessions. read more

Be aware that this location has flooded at least twice. It is located next to a river that floods due to high tides and storms. Our unit flooded this spring. They did not notify us. Even though we paid for the insurance they offer, nothing was covered. The insurance has no value that I can see. Read the contract and see if you can find a scenario where the insurance would actually cover your loss. Its hard not to feel ripped off when you find out this has happened before and they did nothing to fix it. Go somewhere else if you don't want to throw out moldy boxes that were once your belongings. read more

Rented a small size (5ft x 10ft) unit to store home belongings while we are doing a redmodel project. Tricia is super friendly and she matched any online price that the company was advertising. They even offer 25% off your first 4 months and give you a free rental of their moving van for a day upon move in. I'm going to rent for about 6 months and will update if anything changes but great experience thus far. read more

When it came time to enlarge my self-storage unit arrangements, I gave Bay Area Self Storage a shot. But why in the world would I pay the extra 25 or 30 percent higher fees this place offered for plain-jane, sunbaked outdoor entry storage? I'm sorry to say the staff sitting behind the desk when I stopped by were also a little bit of a turnoff. They were not very welcoming--one person stayed on her cell phone with what sounded like a personal call the entire time I was there, leaving a slightly Mansonesque, unprofessional-looking guy to respond to my inquiry on sizes and prices. He blurted out a figure a good 30 bucks or more higher than two new spots just a block away, especially when you factor in the two free months I got at the other place. He really didn't seem interested in selling me storage. They really didn't try to get my business, so I didn't really give them much of a shot. The place looks tidy, and it's large, but I don't think they're trying very hard. read more

I had a great experience with Bay Area Self Storage. I received a free month when I signed up and found that the access was easy and appreciated the security system they have in place. The one-story-only aspect is huge, too. The pricing was pretty competitive. I could have gotten a bit of a lower place somewhere else, but only on a second or higher floor. I just cleared out my space and the manager came by and reminded me to sign the ten-day intention to vacate. I thanked him for the reminder and signed it and the contract was terminated quickly. I'd return to Bay Area SS in the future if I need space again. I think management has changed since the past review so that probably explains the difference between the two reviews. read more

This place really irritated me. I've been a renting a storage unit here for 4 years, and I used to rent out a storage unit in the San Mateo location for 4+ years previously. Never been late on my payments, never complained about anything and had the rent set up on auto pay. So pretty much a loyal customer for 8 years of the company. I am moving out of the area and my fees are due on the 7th. They give you a courtesy 10 day which they will charge you a prorated fee. That will bring me to the 17th. My move out day is the 18th so I asked them for one day, not for free mind you, I am more then willing to pay for an additional day prorated. NOPE can't do it I have to be out by the 17th or I will be charged an additional full month. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? A loyal customer for over 8 years and you can't even give me an extra day that I am willing to pay for??? I operate 3 businesses, and I know all about policies and procedures, but sometimes you can make exceptions here and there if they are not too outrageous. I don't think that asking for one extra day that I will pay for is too much to ask for. No appreciation what's so ever for their customers! They just take your money and could care less. read more

I rented a large storage unit about 8 months ago, to store 29 doors that were the subject of a lawsuit I brought against a contractor. So, it was a bit of an unusual situation, where we needed to stage the doors in the unit and bring the judge there to inspect them. The couple managing this Bay Area Self Storage were terrific. I borrowed their truck to bring the doors in (a great cost-free service), they were helpful in setting up special lighting for the judge's inspection, and they then actually helped me move all 29 doors into a smaller, less-expensive storage unit after the judge finished her inspection. They couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. I would DEFINITELY recommend Bay Area Self Storage. Bill P.S. We won the lawsuit. read more

Just rented a unit here last month. The place is quiet and well maintained and right off of 101. Staff in the office did an excellent job taking care of me when I moved in. I cannot remember their names but it was a guy and a girl. The prices are pretty average as well, plus you get to use their moving van for FREE when you move in. SOLD! Definitely recommend to my friends, especially since they give referral discounts! read more

My husband and I have had such a great experience with this husband and wife business in the past year with them. I couldn't ask for better customer service. When my husband forgot to close his storage gate, they closed and locked it up for us and gave him a call to let him know. That's just one example of what they have done for us as a customer. Their prices are reasonable and they have comprehensive security as well which all adds up to us remaining as customers. read more

Friendly communications, prompt action, and very lenient with my mistakes. I missed payments a couple of times when traveling caused my credit card to cancel (and thereby caused my auto-pay to break), and they just sent me an email in each case with a friendly reminder. There were no ramifications. Also, when I had to move out via hiring movers and not being there to oversee it myself, they really bent over backwards working out a solution for me to get the key to the unit, welcome the drivers, and run the final check for me. Wish all storage facilities were this awesome. read more

I have been using this storage facility for almost 10 years and have never missed a payment. I never complain about anything, but when I received my recent invoice my bill went from 200 bucks a month to 260. I asked the manager why the steep increase and they basically said they did not care, if I did not like it I could go elsewhere, I asked to speak with the district manager (Angela), who never answers my calls despite many calls to this facility, the office managers won't even give me her contact name or phone number. I have been yelled at by the last few site managers (there seems to be a high turnover), one time I was with my 6 year old daughter when this red faced brute started screaming at me and using foul language. I cannot be more disappointed as the past managers have all been pretty nice, needless to say, the Extra Space around the block is 30% cheaper and at least the employees are cordial. I feel bad having referred many friends to this place as locally owned and operated, but I think that there is no longer this reason to rent here or refer others to them either. I am out as soon as I can get a truck. read more

While they are over-priced for the area, the manager will help to find out if you are eligible for a discount and gives friendly reminders if your payment is late. The managers must turn over quickly because the current manager isn't rude nor is she a red faced man that yells at children. She is businesslike and efficient. The site is clean and well-kept, but I would appreciate access during holidays. I deducted one star for the limited access and non-competitive pricing. read more

I recently moved out of a BASS unit I rented for 8 months. They gave me a larger rental space than I could afford, but I'm glad they did because I needed the space. They also gave me a big discount for 4 months! The rent went up as they said and I was happy to pay the regular rate because the discount was a big help. The space was easy to get to and the facility was always clean. They have a truck you can rent for free to move your stuff and plenty of carts to help you move things around or load up your truck. They facility has a clean well maintained bathroom available and the staff are helpful and pleasant. I don't have any cons for this place. I paid my rent in full and before the due date and I think they like customers who do that and leave the place clean when they move out. read more
