Updated: Just wanted to say that we finished our "move in" to the new storage space here, and I found three small things that make me appreciate it even more. 1. The carts! They are newer and *better* than the ones we have used at other spaces. This seems like a little thing, but having a smooth running cart just makes moving stuff around much easier. 2. The music! There's some kind of music piped into the storage hallways. I've been in the space cataloging stuff and it just made it that much more pleasant. 3. The smell! Okay, like, I am pretty sure they have some kind of automatic scent in the hallways too. It doesn't smell like cleaning supplies, it's just a kind of light floral, maybe? Anyway, I like it a lot. All the reviews about the wonderful customer service are right on target! We have had an easy time setting up a rental. The place is clean, well maintained and easy to use! I was there 3 months and they raised the rent 40%, so I moved!! Nice facility. Questionable security. Terrible management. All storage facility's raise the rent like clockwork, usually around 10-15%. It's the business model, and IS NOT tied to inflation. They are depending on people not being willing to move, especially when the next facility is going to do the same thing. HOWEVER....40% IS SIMPLY GREED! I talked to Tim the "manager" about it, and he said he would see what he could do. He never got back to me. When I told him I was moving he offered to reduce it. However, I was fed up with the poor management at that point, so I moved. Manuela the other "manager" had no idea how the alarm system worked when I moved in (it apparently doesn't!). She had to walk halfway down the aisle and wave her arm to get the light to turn on (a condition that still existed when I left). One day, a guy had leaned 5 sheets of plywood against the stairwell fire exit door while he loaded or unloaded his truck. I called the office and reported it. Manuela came up to my unit and told me that; "he had to have somewhere to put his stuff while he moved". I explained to her that the stairwell was emergency egress (escape), and can't be blocked by law (it should be marked and isn't). The fact that she is "managing" this facility and doesn't know that is ridiculous! In fact, common sense should tell her that NO doors should be blocked. The alarm supposedly only reports to the office (nothing audible at the unit). The unit is supposed to be disarmed when you enter your code to get the elevator, and rearm a few minuets after you shut your units door and leave. One time during business hours, I mindlessly followed someone into the elevator without entering my code. It didn't occur to me that I hadn't entered my code until I left, 2 hours later. No one ever responded to what should have been an alarm. As a test, I made a point of doing the same thing any time someone happened to be going into the elevator. No one ever responded! I I told Manuela about it and she said that they would have known about it because there would be a record of the alarm. Obviously, a "record" that someone was in my unit does me no good after the fact, and they never raised the issue anyway!! Parking can be tight. The day I left, they allowed "Pod" to drop a shipping container that would have fit in one parking space, smack in the middle of two parking spaces! I could go on, but hopefully you can see why a 40% increase was far too much to pay for all this fine management. read more

Unfortunately, when the movers arrived, we all agreed my unit wasn't going to be big enough. So, I asked if there was another larger unit available. Manuela worked some serious magic. I really like A-1 Self Storage in Belmont. It's a super clean facility, great staff that work at the place, good value overall. Ive had to use their service twice in my life at different points. First it was J.P. at the front desk, now it's Tim & Manuela who attend to customers. From JP to Tim/Manuela, they're all attentive, friendly and more than capable in their position. Great customer service overall. The place is generally kept in very good condition, is clean, etc. The front is accessible in general to get everything from a cup of coffee/water to the key for a cart. What then you might ask is the reason for two stars: I went to clear out my unit today and they informed me that their policy is one to not pro-rate your unit rent on the way out. That's a shame...cost me about ~$200 but it cost you three stars and a potential of not being a customer for a third time. I'd personally say they might want to reconsider that policy. read more

Update: I called and talked to the manager, as advised and he was very pleasant and offered to lower the monthly rent by $40, saying it was an unusually big hike, and that the "system" does it automatically. The next month, I try to pay my rent and THE RENT HAD NOT CHANGED! He didn't lower the rent as he promised. I called and he was out for the next few days and the woman who works there said she didn't know what I was talking about and she couldn't answer any questions. I'm dreading having to call and deal with this. Who knows what they will pull next. read more

No, I do not recommend A-1 self storage.. the manager Tim was very disrespectful to me from the very beginning.. he talked down to me like I was some sort of low life. The unit he assigned me was very dirty on the floor with no light and unfortunately, since I originally had moved in there, I did not notice how dirty the floor was in my bed. Just got so much dirt and dust on it or my mattress it was really upsetting... They should definitely clean their units a lot better. you have to end up buying their lock you cannot bring your own lock. I do not recommend this place. read more

After nearly 7 years of storage at the Belmont site, I recently moved everything to a storage facility in the East Bay close to family. This A1 Self Storage is the cleanest, most secure storage facility I've ever rented. I didn't have the temp control unit but each unit because of the metal and cement siding was a cool temperature. My 10x10 was tall not like my present 10x10. Roll carts are available to help move things. Password protected large elevators. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. I finally remembered to write a review here a few days after signing the lease cancellation form, and I definitely felt my money all the past months of renting my unit was worth it. I got a storage unit here back in March because I was preparing for a big out-of-state move and I needed a place to put my collectibles so my room wouldn't be too stuffed while looking for an apartment/house/condo rental. My entire experience with this business was great starting from the beginning. The representative that helped me with the selection of the unit and starting of the lease was very helpful and understanding. And he searched for the right deal for me and my needs. He ended up giving me the website discount since he was able to that time, and that helped. The staff on site the past several months have always been helpful, and understanding too even when you accidentally break one of the rules on the lease contract. One time earlier this month I accidentally tripped the alarms because I didn't finish entering my code before using the elevator because another person was coming down and getting out and I didn't know what to do. When I opened my unit and was surprised by the alarm, I left a voicemail after, explaining my accidental mistake. And when I called to follow up, and tell them I was prepared to come in and make a statement if they needed, they said it was fine and they already clarified the record for me. So I was relieved. The lobby/retail section has a great set of boxes and other packing material you can need. I admit I went through a lot because of how much I was packing and shipping to the new apartment, but I felt everything I bought was worth it. The big bubble box packs are good, and I liked their 16x12x12 and 18x18x16 boxes as they allowed me to pack in different ways to reduce the expected amount of boxes being shipped They only raised the rents once when I was there, and that was towards the end, so I didn't really care at the time. I have no frame of reference for how this industry does things since this was my first. If you're nearby this storage unit facility, I highly recommend using them for your storage needs. The 10x10 unit I got was more than enough for me and is definitely enough for most people who don't want a small closet-sized unit read more

This is my first time renting a storage unit and Manuela made it so easy for me to move in! I filled out everything online so it made the process so much easier. They also have moving carts to help load everything into your unit which is super convenient. The building is really secure and has a lot of different measures to make sure the right person has access to their unit. Manuela is awesome because she showed me how to navigate the halls and showed me how the locks work (she's also super friendly and great to talk to!) I would definitely get a cylinder lock from the office if you have the money to spare. Also, more importantly (to me) most of the units are inside a building rather than just out in the open. read more
