After leaving Santa Cruz and having experienced other places that develop film, I realized this place is actually really amazing. Incredibly quick turnaround time of just a few days (compared to Walgreens that recently took almost 2 weeks). I thought $11-12 was pricey but have not found any place under $15 ever since. Great employees, really helpful with my newborn passport picture. Been looking around for a place that takes newborn passport pictures and it was really challenging, but Bay Photo Lab was only one in the area that was doing. If I could give more stars I would for their professionalism and patience as newborns constantly are moving and it's hard to take a picture. They were amazing, photoshopped a bit, like my hand got in the picture as my baby was moving a lot. I'm really glad that I found this place. read more

Funny thing is, I happen to be looking at another business and their reviews and saw Bay Photo, so I was curious about their reviews; assuming it was mostly five stars. I was surprised at so many bad one star and two stars reviews. I concluded after 30 years of going there, I never had any issues, so I shrugged off the bad rep. Then I had to do another job for an author, who will be publishing my photos in his book. I go to Scotts Valley first, they do not take orders anymore. I go to Soquel shop, I order as I have in 30 years as a photojournalist, the same order as I always do; one DVD for me, and two sets of usually black and white prints; one for me and one for my client. I meet the client at the shop and there is only one set of prints. No DVD. I was embarrassed to be put in such a position. How do you f... up so much? A simple order, to a friendly employee who I thoroughly enjoyed and all my interactions that day were very nice and friendly in the shop, but he was unable to get down a simpleton order. Cannot blame it on the pandemic or tRump, I know people do not want to work at crappy jobs, but its counter intuitive to give such lousy service. Now, the job of the b/w prints were done very well, as the negatives were 45 years old, illustrating the Tree Circus in Scotts Valley. When I called calmly to find out if maybe a second envelop was lost with the DVD and second set of prints, not one SORRY or apology which is the civil manner of dealing with a mishap and mistake on a job of importance or minor issue; the words sorry is a salve and makes the mistake pardonable, or sorry for the inconvenience, no refund or compensation needed, but a sorry should be instilled in workers when there is a mistake the shop did. I was left unsatisfied after that call. I have to admit as I have in some of my Yelp reviews, that my papa was a top sales person, art director to one of the biggest advertising companies in the world, stationed in Kenya serving many African countries. What does that mean? I was pickled and marinated in customer service and ads and how to deal with clients all my life, as this is what papa did his whole life. When I see bad customer service it perks up my memory banks on what to do and what not to do. In all fairness it was a minor mishap compared to when Costco, when I deviated for a minute to a cheaper alternative to Bay Photo. I still laugh about that mess they created for me, which lost me a job at a company when they saw what happened. I protested in earnest that I did not cut the negatives across faces. Costco cut the negatives not at the right places but right thru the face of Maya Angelou. When I saw that I was sputtering with anger and disbelief. That is what you call a colossal fuck up. Bay is minor compared to that disaster, but that I had to scramble like a fool in front of a client, was not groovy. read more

Customer service at this place sucks, they just don't care! I used to use them in the past wow how times have changed. I placed an order for an acrylic photo back in mid April the estimated delivery was mid-May I figured with Covid this was reasonable then at the end of May I contacted and asked for status which took awhile for a reply when I did the email from Ashley on May 19th. stated "I am so sorry, our acrylic production is currently on hold due to shelter in place orders. The acrylic production has been delayed. We can keep the order on hold until production begins again or we can cancel the order if you want to order another product. All other products are being produced with only slight delays in some departments. Thank you, Ashly D." I sent another email asking for an estimated delivery date! This email from Jennifer states sometime in July for delivery!! Hi Tom, We are so very sorry that this email was somehow missed! Super quick, easy, and friendly neighborhood photo developing spot. I'm glad I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The people working here were extremely kind and informational. I was worried that I didn't know most of the terminology, products, or processes, regarding photography/film, but everyone here was more than happy to teach me and explain things to me in depth. I noticed they have a WIDE selection of film, as well as picture frames, photo books, and other accessories. They also have a self-service printing option. I placed an online order to be delivered at the store. The photos were ready for me pretty quickly- just a couple days. The photo quality is great - I'm happy with that. BUT a few photos were missing from my order. Unfortunately I didn't realize it until I'd already gotten home *note to self: always check the order upon pick up. The staff were pretty helpful on the phone, although not the most professional. They said the missing photos should be available for me to pick up by tomorrow - so hopefully It will all be resolved soon. read more

I LOVE Bay Photo! I had two photos restored with another company and while that company did a good job with the restoration, their follow up with everything else was very poor. So, I sent my restored photos to Bay Photo and they did an excellent job with my prints. I asked for a few changes to both prints and they did the changes for no charge and said they just wanted me to be happy with the results. I love the results and am very happy! They sent my photos by mail to me very quickly. I plan to have Bay Photo restore a few more photos for me and I look forward to working with them. Thanks Bay Photo! read more

This place is amazing. I have gotten film developed in SB, Ventura, and now here in Santa Cruz. The turn around time is great, and I love my photos so much. You have the option to get prints, scans, etc. i usually get scans and then decide if I want prints later to save on paper. Definitely worth a shot! My grandfather brought in his camera yesterday with 4 years of memories on the card. He is from a different era so he doesn't really know how to properly upload his photos to a computer-- so he trusted Bayphoto to do it cause they said they could. The girl who attempted to assist him with his photos, somehow deleted every one of his photos... that's absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. Years of birthdays, christmases, other various holidays, family photos, etc... all gone. 4 years worth. He left very upset and I just found out about it today. From what I heard, I assume she didn't know how to recovery the photos, or she didn't even try. Which if you are working for a photo lab or a job that is so technical--- you should know how to actually do your job. Definitely lost some customers. Don't trust Bayphoto to transfer your photos, unless you like to gamble. read more

Wow, I'm pretty conflicted. I was using Dwayne's photo to develop and scan my 120 and 220 film. Then we moved to Santa Cruz and I was thrilled to find Bay Photo. I had about 15 rolls from Europe developed and scanned and it all seemed pretty good. Then, I just had another 6 developed and scanned and I've come to truly dislike Bay Photo. I dropped off my 6 rolls on a Saturday, and the girl at the desk said the color would be ready Wednesday and the B&W would take about a week and a half. I called Wednesday and the same girl said that they wouldn't be ready until Friday and sounded kind of rude so I told her that I only called because she told me they'd be ready Wednesday...she replied "No, I'm the one who took your film(I suppose it said in the computer who took in the film) and you didn't drop them off on Saturday because I wasn't working...." to which I replied, "TRUST ME, I dropped them off Saturday(which I knew because I was on the way to SFO and I only went to an airport 1 1/2 hours away one time in the last week)..." to which she finally relented and said "anyway, they didn't go out until Monday so they won't be back until Friday." When they finally came back and I brought them home I found out they were someone else's scans. I called and the girl didn't apologize or seem to care. She said "yeah, that happens sometimes" like it was super super normal and told me "you'll have to bring them back in" after asking me repeatedly for some number on a proof sheet she said I should have which definitely wasn't with the film. I brought the film in the next day and the other lady I dealt with wasn't nice, didn't apologize, etc. No offer to discount my next film, no refund, etc. I finally ended up getting all my film back but after having them massively screw up and give me someone else's film(most people don't want other people seeing their film content I'd think), not apologize, deal with 3 rather unfriendly women, and having to drive back and forth I think I'll switch back to mailing my stuff out. It's pretty freaking pathetic that a local lab has such HORRIBLE customer service when I've never seen them busy and it looks like a pretty relaxed job, the attitude is ridiculous. read more

The guy helping me had everything set up and ready to go. I sat down, he snapped off a few, said "nice one" and then "meet cha back at the counter, you're done." I'm thinking, "wait, um...does not compute. I need some sort of drama here. Tell me there's a problem. Shake the camera and say 'uh oh'. I recently dusted off my old Nikon and Yashica-D, and was in need for some film as well as developing. This place gets 5 stars for being the only place in town (that I've found) that: - develops 35mm ON SITE, prints, and can be ready same day! - sells medium format film! After trying multiple photo printing companies, these people are the best. They are a little pricey but it is so worth it! After ordering my first set of prints, I was brought into tears! The attention to detail is beyond comparison! Every photo was manually inspected and in the order, they included a little card with the name and employee number that was assigned to inspect, assemble and package it! I brought in several hundred family photos and letters for their shoebox service. They digitized every photo and both sides of each letter (some of them on very thin paper). It took a little over a week. They called to report that one letter had torn, but they did what they could for it. The digital prints came out light, but all the detail was there and they could be adjusted to look better than the originals! It is an unbelievable deal. Up to 1,000 prints exactingly digitized for $100! They couldn't do negatives for that price, though. read more

I ordered prints from them online when I saw that SmugMug uses them and SmugMug's prints are rated very high for quality. The photo quality was excellent. And I used the BayPhoto applications on my computer to upload, resize, and place my orders. The programs were easy to use. Though I will say I found it frustrating that I could not order matte finish photos and glossy finish photos in the same order. Had to place separate photos. The service was excellent. They made a few mistakes on the prints - and quickly remedied the situation. All in all I was very pleased. Excellent prints, and great service. I came in to get our wedding photo discs copied. (They were not copy written since I bought them from the photographer.)I tried being cheap and going to CVS first. But, they can't copy discs with over a couple hundred photos. Anyhow, my discs had 900 photos each on them. So, the nice lady at CVS referred me to Bay Photo. They were friendly and FAST! They copied the discs and had them ready for me in about an hour. read more

I have heard such great things about Bay Photo. I ordered a metal print and it looked awesome until it was hung. There was a slight defect. Really slight. When I asked for a new print they offered suggestions on how to make it "better." Yea, better for them. $90 later, I have a print that is not what I wanted. I wanted a gloss metal print w/o defect. Suggestion was to to downplay the color and go to matte. I feel I should have not taken in suggestion. I am VERY unhappy w results. I did not ask for a second re-correction since they did what they asked. Sad I really like this pic and wanted to show it off, and now it's displayed, but not noticeably. I'm embarrassed of the results of the print, not the picture. read more

The worst service EVER! The order confirmation says expected to ship on 1/6, it is 1/8 and the shipment has not even left your premises. I ordered 2 day shipping for nothing. So I had to go order photo for my mother-in-law's service from CVS because we do not want to have an empty frame in the church, right? When I asked for a direct number to talk to somebody when I call back, sure you gave me extension where nobody was available. If I could give less than 1 star I would. I just spent 2 hours at the kiosk trying to print out photos from my phone. After the first hour of choosing and editing I got an error message. The girl comes over and says "oh yeah that happens sometimes. You need to start over." WHAT?? So I start the process all over. An hour later it does it AGAIN. Guy says "sorry". Wow. I've had to rush prints in the past due to my own procrastination & wouldnt trust Costco or any other quickie lab, because Bay photo's quality is so good, and they rushed my print for me and always do a great job with protecting the prints during shipment. I downloaded a photo to these folks to be printed on their "Art Paper". The resultant print is an embarrassment! Yesterday I paid $2.50 per slide to get 87 family slides digitally scanned onto a CD. Some of the slides were 70 years old, and the lab did a good job restoring the color in them. Why such a negative review? I spent several days getting the slides numbered in chronological order, and the woman at the front desk assured me that the scans would respect that order. Instead, the CD contained 88 slides that had nothing to do with the chronological order. There was also a scan of a slide from some other family. When I called to relay my concerns, Christoff was basically dismissive. He finally said he would discuss the problem with the guy who did the scans, but didn't even ask me who I was as he was fixin' to hang up. The cavalier attitude is astonishing.
