I saw a PT in Wilmington, who did not listen and jumped to conclusions without adequate diagnostics. The PT seemed to be right out of school and had me doing stretches that exacerbated the pain. I left this practice and was finally correctly diagnosed - the Boston Sports Medicine PT was in fact further damaging a ligament with the stretching prescribed. I am finally on the road to healing but it will be much longer due to poor care here. read more

I'm not an athletic person at all, so when I tore my meniscus from my first time skiing and then sprained my opposite ankle after, I felt overwhelmed and completely clueless how to address it. After a few months, I decided to check out PT based on a friend's suggestion. My physical therapist, Elyse, was phenomenal. She's knowledgeable and approachable, and was happy to answer the *endless* questions I had about my exercises, how strengthening works, preventative measures, etc. She was incredibly patient with me, working to explain everything because it was essentially my first time doing rigorous exercise, and reassuring me that I would be able to walk and run like normal again! I started out limping and one month later, I was jogging across the room. What I found most helpful at BSM was that Elyse would model the exercises first, correct me as I was doing them, and then emailed me a list of what to do at home. Not only was my PT professional, but she was also kind, warm, and friendly. Our sessions never felt burdensome because we chatted throughout them; Elyse is very good at building rapport! I highly recommend BSM for its great staff and customer service skills, as well as care during COVID. My successful healing definitely wouldn't have been possible without PT and Elyse's encouragement and guidance! read more

I booked one appointment. I asked very clearly how much the appointment would be based on Insurance info I gave them when booking the appointment and the day before when they called to confirm. Told $120 would be maximum out of pocket expense and they couldn't give me an exact cost when going through my insurance. I assumed that meant I would pay ~30-40 for a $120 appointment when goes through my insurance. The $120 evaluation they mentioned was only for first 15 minutes and then next 20 minutes was an additional $200.... Bill came in today from my insurance at $320 for 40 minutes and now I owe $128. I called and then basically told me that their front desk shouldn't have told me that and that would have to talk to someone else to understand how the billing worked. Would not recommend this company if want transparent billing and competent staff. read more

I've been working out since I was fifteen. I'm thirty-one now and I've only been to a physical therapist twice in sixteen years. One of those visits was just for bad posture and tight shoulders. Other than that, thanks to obsessive stretching and icing, I'm pretty durable. That's why consulting a PT involves shame and embarrassment. I feel like I've failed and I shuffle into the office with my head down like I'm about to face someone in front of whom I got too drunk and peed on the dog. Admitting my own physical vulnerability is more embarrassing than a prostate exam. A prostate exam is necessary. It could save my life. And at least you don't have to look the doctor in the eye, though that would be pretty hilarious. Try winning a staring contest while an MD rummages around back there. It'd be funnier still if it was done like a bank: Doctor at the window and a line behind you and you can't decide which is more humiliating to look at. Dr. Lauren Mooney's calm manner extinguished my Irish Catholic-level shame. I explained that I had a mild case of tendinitis in both shoulders from going overboard with the dips several months ago and then being a hero and carrying my suitcase instead of rolling it on my last trip to New York. I had been treating myself but it had only gotten about 60% better. After a thorough examination, she concluded that nothing was torn, broken, diseased, or being eaten alive from within. I heaved a sigh of relief and my stomach, which I had been sucking in, flopped over my waistband like a dead jellyfish. Now it was time for the therapy part. Lauren introduced me to a piece of equipment I had been ignoring for years, the resistance band. Anchoring one end to a peg on a wall, she instructed me to grab the other end and move my arms in various directions. I'm not going to tell you the exact exercises in case you try to save a buck and do an exercise that may not target your injured tissue or make it worse. After I learned the exercises, Lauren demonstrated some shrewd business acumen and told me to come back next week even if nothing changed and she would show me some more exercises. But for now our time was up. During our second visit, she taught me the rest of the exercises and told me that was all I would need but that I would need to do these exercises diligently and to continue icing and stretching. In fact, she basically said that even if my tendons become like suspension cables, I should do these exercises for the rest of my life. I appreciated that she didn't try to sell more treatment. I know healthcare professionals should technically be like that all the time but most doctors are like infomercials with student debt these days so I'm always on guard. Lauren also gives a hell of a shallow tissue massage. During both visits, she whipped out a tool that looked like a giant dab nail or that thing that dentists use to scrape taco meat off your teeth. She pressed it gently into the affected area and I asked if I should try to replicate the massage at home with my fingers or a tennis ball. She said that was a good idea and that should round out the healing process nicely. In between these gems, she made polite conversation that further helped me feel at ease. As shameful as I feel for admitting I need a PT's help, there's something invigorating about looking a stupid mistake in the face and knowing exactly how to avoid it the next time. Now that I know both what to do and what not to do, I'll be even fitter. Fast-forward a month and I'm doing exercises I haven't done for almost a year without pain. The only smear on the whole experience, albeit an insignificant one, was that the receptionist who made the appointment told me that the PT could only address one problematic body part per visit. I wanted to discuss some constant tightness in my knee as well but it wasn't happening. At first I wasn't happy. I guess the Hippocratic Oath is optional in Massage-my-Shitty-Pelvis School, I grumbled to myself. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. You need an entire session, two at least actually, to adequately address just one body part. I would have spread Lauren too thin if I tried to jam my knee into the session for what was a pretty minor complaint. If a client came to our firm and said, "Listen, I've invented a touch-screen device that becomes a heat-seeking drone AND a back massager on command. I need a patent. Oh, and I've kinda been accused of killing six hookers and burying them in my lawn. Will you defend me?" . . . I could only take on one of those cases. So I get it, BSM, and thanks for saving me from myself! read more

This team is so well-equipped and personable. I worked with Joe in particular, who was always on the ball during our sessions. He welcomed honest reports on how my injury was feeling, and developed a rigorous but patient plan for recovery. He added sessions when necessary to see my through. BSM emails your exercises with pictures accompanying so I was never in doubt about how to safely exercise between our visits. One day, I showed up with a stiff neck unrelated to my injury, but we were able to modify so I got just as much out of our time. Joe also kept in touch after sessions and is very available to me still for questions and updates. I felt cared for here. read more

Bonnie and Marcelo have taken excellent care of me. They are being very careful of me overdoing things (which is a perennial problem for me) while also giving me work to do that I can *feel* making a difference in the strength and muscular balance of my shoulder. After every appointment, I have felt measurable improvement in my shoulder, which is fantastic because I have not had such good luck with PT after other injuries. Marcelo took the time to explain exactly what was going on inside my shoulder, using a physical 3D model, so now I know why certain motions are exacerbating the pain and others don't. Bonnie went after me with a couple of different types of massage and found some knots in my shoulder area that I hadn't realized were there, and once they eased up I could *move my arm again*. I've also noticed careful attention on making sure that equipment is cleaned after every use; COVID may not be transmitted via fomites, but the common cold and flu both are, so I'm glad to see this care being taken. I will absolutely recommend them to others. read more

Given the level of detail BSM has disclosed about my treatment process, I'm lowering my rating to one star. I'm disappointed that medical professionals would make public detailed information about diagnosis and course of treatment. I don't begrudge BSM a chance to respond to the criticisms I raised in my initial review, but surely there is a way to do that without disclosing quite so much of my personal information (especially given that my re-injury wasn't a major criticism in my review). read more

Review is based on Erin who handles the insurance. I had ONE consultation appointment that she entered as TWO appointments -a consultation plus a physical therapy treatment. I did not receive any treatment beyond a standard consultation where they explain what they think you have and what the go forward plan is. After calling and explaining this she did nothing to correct it -so I have now been billed for an appointment I didn't have. I would be careful as they are out to bill for as much as they can and do not listen to their customers. read more

I attended physical therapy here for several weeks. Appointments were productive and my condition improved thanks to exercises provided by the PT. Staff are kind and professional. However what turned me off was the firm's draconian late policy. I understand charging fees for last minute cancellations. Accordingly, this firm charges a fee if cancellations are made less than 24 hours in advance. However, this means if you have an emergency and call at 9:26am to cancel the next day at 9am, it does not matter how long you have been a customer, or the extenuating circumstances, the receptionist will tell you flatly there is nothing that can be done, unfortunately, and you will be charged. Quite surprising considering the fact that client-patient rapport is very important as other reviews attest. Update: Staff emailed me about this review. Apparently a director pointed a PT to it. In a previous version I noted that my rehabilitation program appeared indistinguishable from those by competitors and those published online. Staff insisted the program was targeted, though I was never told so. Hard to believe any client would fail to appreciate knowing from the get-go their program was targeted to their needs. Either way I was happy with the program. Since my beef is with the cancellation policy I updated the review and added stars. read more

Boston Sports Medicine is amazing. I am a highly active young person with an array of joint issues. I started having knee problems in college and was told by a different physical therapist (NOT affiliated with BSM) that I needed to give up running entirely. I have been working with Marisa Frank at BSM for four years now. Not only have she given me immense physical relief, but she has always tried to work with me to find modifications/alternatives so that I can continue to be active--including being able to run! Marisa has also been incredibly emotionally supportive as I've developed several other joint issues for which I continue to receive treatment. I look forward to going to physical therapy with Marisa. She is a talented physical therapist as well as an overall enjoyable person to be around. BSM is a great PT place for athletes and active people--they aren't satisfied with just mitigating your pain, they want to help you reach your ideal level of physical activity. Boston Sports Medicine is terrific! I have nothing but good things to say about this place. I have sustained two moderate to severe injuries over the past year or so, one to my right shoulder, and one to my lower back/lumbar area. Both times I sought out their help. They were fantastic with billing issues (negotiated with my insurance so I did not have to do it for the most part), scheduling, and the treatment itself. It was obvious from the moment I began treatment that they really knew what they were doing. My shoulder injury cleared up immediately after my last treatment (which was about a year ago) and has not bothered me since. I'm still in the treatment process for my low back but I feel very confident that I'm on the road to recovery on account of their capable staff. Lastly, you really feel like they are invested in your health and wellness when you are there. It is obvious that they care and genuinely want to help which makes the treatment process a lot easier. I am an avid but aging athlete and first went to BSM in January 2017 for a sports injury. Although my doctor had proposed I might need to give up on the sport I love, I was hopeful I might make a recovery with some PT. I was assigned to work with Marisa Frank, who immediately understood the importance of sports in my life and worked to make a plan to help me get back to being active as soon as possible. I never have enough time in the day and so I expected it would be a major annoyance to take time out the work day to go to PT. Instead, I found myself looking forward to every appointment. Marisa was extremely knowledgeable and patient in answering my many questions. She is a complete professional who is also a delightfully interesting person to interact with. The sessions flew by, and I felt much better. In fact, I found her treatments so effective that I continue to come to see her on occasion for maintenance! She was phenomenal in her knowledge, care and therapy plan as it related to my shoulder. I can not be more enthusiastic and appreciative about my time at Davis Square BSM working with Emily. I've had tennis elbow issues for several years, an injury that progressively worsened and required surgery (for a torn tendon). I started working with Emily about 5 months ago and finished up today. Emily's knowledge, experience, meticulousness, patience and support were like nothing I've ever experienced in physical therapy (and I've had many physical therapists for many injuries over the years, including three previous physical therapists for this same elbow injury prior to the surgery). Elbow surgery is not very common and requires a very measured, attentive approach. Emily managed it perfectly. I should also mention that Emily and BSM have a distinctly more flexible approach to patients' needs than many other physical therapy clinics I've experienced--if your needs exceed the typical 30 minute time frame, she and the BSM team will seamlessly extend your care as necessary without any effect on other clients, etc.--hugely impressive teamwork that allowed me to finish each visit feeling relieved that my care was complete and feeling confident that my exercises had been fully, carefully taught.
