For the most part, the men are respectful and polite offering to buy you a drink (or water)after a dance and not trying to dry-hump you on the dance floor. There is nothing DC about this place. LOL The crowd was mostly to 50 plus so we were the young ones. Sometimes I felt like I was crashing a party thrown by my aunts and uncles. The music was AWESOME. 90s and early 2000s Hip Hop and R&B thrown in with some current stuff. And guess what... People were dancing. Not a ton of people with their heads in their phones, or posted up in a VIP section. People were dancing and men actually on several occasions asked us to dance. The decor is... I don't know what it is. It had a very "lounge that use to be popping in 90s but never upgraded feel". Can't speak on the drinks or food or pricing of either. The parking is free. 15 dollar cash cover, women are free before 10. It was packed. I wish I could take the same energy and place it in a crowd closer to my age. Like 33-45. Same music. Same energy. It was cool. I would go again for funzies. It was entertaining. But I mean...most of the people were a decade or two older. I feel like sometimes I am a part of a lost segment of a generation. So unlike a lot of you, I didn't hate this place. Let's be clear, the drinks were insanely overpriced (a water bottle of off-brand water was $5), the crowd was noticeably 50+, the food tasted like it was all fried in the same oil making fries/chicken tenders/ shrimp indistinguishable, and the servers were slow and pretty abrasive. Oh and don't even get me started on the nautical, brass, banquet hall themed decor. I mean I could almost smell 1996 in there. However, I thought that before 12am the music was pretty good-- lots of Beyoncé and radio hits. After 12 it's all oldies and the crowd goes wild for that there. Bay Street is located in Lanham Md in the Best Western Hotel. Location is great! Off of the beltway and parking is free unlike DC. A mature crowd (35+). Predominately African American but open to all. No drama. They come here to party. Baby Boomers at their best! They make an attempt to look their best. The music is R&B, reggae, hip hop and a little house. The DJ could do better. He has a tendency to play the same cuts twice and he needs to play more current cuts. Boomers like current music too. But he does get the party moving. They need to turn on the AC. Just because its winter does not mean you need heat. Bodies produce heat. They have 2 dance floors. They need to move the dance floor in the back (its movable) to the area where the small bar is located. People can socialize more thus buy more drinks. hint...hint bay street. Their decor could use a make over buts its clean. They serve food also. Bar food type...chicken wingetts, fries...that type of stuff. It serves its purpose. Bottom line is: if you want to dance, laugh and have no drama, not go to DC, don't want to party with your kids and feel like you want to put on your sequins and cat daddy spats. this is the place for you. read more

It's a perfect place for people that are 50 and above that want to party, but don't want to go in the city, to get their groove on. It has free parking and it's right off the beltway, so it's easy to find. A woman struck up a conversation with me and said it's the only place in the area for the "grown and sexy" to get their party on. Umm, okay. I do agree that older folks in the area needs somewhere decent they can enjoy and have a good time, I can appreciate that. With that being said, I don't fit any of the criteria to party here. The night I came, my cousin was celebrating his 50th birthday and I was literally the youngest person here. This place needs a complete renovation...from top, to bottom! Everything in here is outdated. I find this surprising, because they clearly make money here and it seems to always be packed, so I'm not sure why they haven't updated their "lounge" (and I use that term very loosely) in all the years that they've been open. You MUST check your coat, which is $3. Please, it's not that serious, I put mine back in my car. Absolutely no jeans can be worn, if you do wear them, they charge $25 for you to enter. Ummm, What? I can understand they want to enforce a dress code, but this place is old and dated, why can't nice jeans be worn? Whatever! I do know that older people take the time to actually dress up and look good when going out to functions like this and I appreciate their style. I even saw a gentleman with a top hat on, sort of reminded me of the Planter's Peanut...he even had the cane! LOL! We had invitations, so we got in for free, but I think all ladies can enter before 10pm for free. The ladies restroom was out of order for the majority of the night, so I was forced to go down the hallway and use a random bathroom in a vacant hotel room. Creepy and really unacceptable. On one occasion, one of the officers on duty offered to escort me into the occupied men's room so I could use the restroom. LOL! That was pretty funny and I got a kick out of being escorted by a cop into the men's room! The men were shocked, but they got over it. P.G.'s finest were on duty, S/O to JH for looking out! So if you want somewhere to go that you know you'll be protected, this is the place. All of the staff were friendly, even the guy that shined his flashlight on me because I had a drink on the dance floor...my bad Roscoe! LOL! The room where the birthday parties are held was overly crowded and it not only had my cousin's party in it, it had another man celebrating his birthday in it. The DJ played a variety of music, but mainly old school, with a little new school mixed in. Nothing like seeing someone old enough to be your parents dancing to Fetty Wap's "Trap Queen." LOL! I'm not mad at that! My ego was stroked all night because I never had to pay for a drink and was complimented throughout the evening. I always knew that older men were much more chivalrous than the men my age, but these men took the cake! I did enjoy myself, but I usually enjoy myself wherever I go. I arrived at this spot at about 11:30pm on 4/2/11 and the crowd at this location was packed!! Although, I paid $20 with jeans, $15 with out jeans, there was another event going on at the ballroom that was rented out, it looks like this place has some frequent patrons and with it being a 30+ crowd and more African-American, they did have and are open to all who are there to party! The dance floor stayed full of people moving to the music all night long (I left about 2:45am). The DJ was what I would call OK, he did keep the crowd moving and blended more classic hip/hop and r&b. However, he did mix in some current songs and played some Go Go and Reggae, to change the pace and keep the energy going. My only thoughts being a true music fan, was that he could have let play longer songs that most people enjoyed before mixing it with something else. I rated this a 3-star based on the service and the decor of the place. The bar staff was very slow (only 2 bars, about 5 staff working), so you need to use skills to get a drink and they were not cheap either ($8 drinks, $4 bottled water). The decor needs a serious update, having that sea galley look..(like that of Long Johns Silver restaurant) by day, I am not sure that they will throw money into it anytime soon. read more

Bay Street Lounge never disappoints. Got there on a Friday by 7 pm, you have to pay after 8. There weren't too many people there so me and my girls got seats right on the dance floor. They had a small buffett of fried chicken, collard green, and potato salad. You must buy a drink before they will serve you a plate. By 7:55 pm the place was full and the music was thumping. The crowd is diverse and mature and ready to party. I had a wonderful time. If you can't get there in time for the buffet, eat before you come. Saturday is better where the crowd is a little bit mature and more eye candy is present. They have a dress code on Saturday with men in slacks and collar shirts. Ladies get in free before 11pm on Saturday and its funny to see the women running to the door with their high heels trying to get in before 11 pm and I have seen several fall on their face trying to beat the CLOCK...LMAO. I've been coming to Bay Street for many years and it's always been a great venue for a grown up and sexy party. It was recently remodeled and renamed to the Capital Restaurant and Lounge. A facelift was badly needed and a great job was done. I'm a bit disturbed by the "No Ins and Outs" policy that has been recently implemented. The clientele is a mature one and I'm not sure why a person's ability to go out and smoke, have a one on one conversation with someone or anything else impacts their ability to re-enter the club. I don't want to make any assumptions as to why this change took place but it is ridiculous. A mandatory $5 cost check was also implemented. I understand a slight increase in pricing might be warranted but truth is folks have been putting $$$ in to this place for years and all of the recent changes aren't going over well with long time clientele. Some friends and I went as an after party around 2am. I've been going there for years because of the music. The place needs remodeling. Seats have springs missing and the ceiling leaks amongst other things. I overlooked that because we were there to dance before it closed in an hour. The owner had a nasty attitude and tried to charge us full price for an hour after I asked for a discount. We left and won't be back. That place is not all of that. read more

I'm over 35 but younger than 40, this place is for a MUCH older crowd that don't mind partying at holes-in-the-wall. There's an entry fee (and be mindful of how you dress, because that determines how much you pay), a required drink fee, and a fee for their required coat check. I enjoy it each time I go (which has been twice so far and only on Friday nights). The crowd is MUCH older than other grown & sexy clubs (think late 40s to late 70s with a few mid 30s thrown in..sooo not exaggerating LOL). The music is good (latest in hip hop, r&b, etc.), drinks are good, there is more people dancing than sitting around, and Friday nights are jean night which is great! Bay Street was renovated and now has a very modern look. They also changed the name to Capital Lounge. Since they reopened they keep changing and not for the better. The drinks are high $5 for a bottle of water. I was there three weeks ago and it was free for woman before 10 pm and they opened at 9. I went last night and now there is a cover of $10 and they say it was free before 9 and that they now open at 8pm. Nobody goes out at 8pm. People were complaining about how high the drinks were, so they lowered the prices and then charged a 9% tax on the drinks (still high). They changed the security staff and got rid of the guys who had been there for over 20 years, who were older and classy, and now they have these guys walking around with jackets and ball caps on that say ZERO Tolerance, which is off putting to grown ass people. It took me a while to realize they were security. We are not in high school and they need to lose the Zero Tolerance and class it up. Security should be identified as security with shirts that identify them as security or suit jackets with tags on them that say security. The crowd is mature and the music was okay too much oldies and not a nice mixture of current hits and oldies. I believe they changed DJ's as well since I was there three weeks ago and the music had just the right mixture of old and new. The club really needed an upgrade, but they should not nickel and dime the public to pay for it.
