I visited Union Bar & Grill for the first time, and unfortunately, it will probably be my last. I was disappointed with the portion sizes, especially since the menu advertised "big plates." The crab cakes were very small, and the salmon was about the size of a small block. Even the side of spinach was served in a bowl that wasn't even filled. The wait time didn't help either--it took about 30 minutes for my salmon to arrive. After finishing my meal, I was still hungry and ended up looking for another place to eat. I'm glad to see a quality restaurant spring up in the New Carrollton area. The Union Bar and Grill sits below the "Stella" apartment complex which is among several luxury apartment buildings that has adorn the New Carrollton Metro area. The restaurant is really nice. It reminds me of a smaller Burtons or a more refined Busboys and Poets. The food is also really good. I've had the burger, wings, calamari, spinach dip and the shrimp Po Boy. I'm a lamb chop lover so the next time, I'm definitely getting those! Service has always been solid and the three hour free parking with validation is definitely a nice touch! They definitely updated the recipe and I love the presentation. If you like firmer grits, southern-style, and rich, then you'll like theirs. I find their prices to be very affordable especially their cocktails for this to be in the DMV. I find them to be very reasonably priced. The servers are always friendly. This place is a hidden gem! Everything we ordered was amazing. We ordered close to closing time without realizing it, but the food still came out fresh, hot, and full of flavor. The wings were delicious. I tried the sweet and spicy sesame flavor. It leaned more sweet than spicy, but the flavor was so good. The salad was incredibly fresh. I'm usually not a fan of kale salads, but the blend was amazing, and the salmon was perfectly seasoned. The sliders were also a standout! Cooked medium well and absolutely perfect. The sweet potato fries had the perfect amount of crunch. We visited on a Monday night, so it was nice and quiet. Food was also served quickly . The Union Bar and Grill We decided to try The Union Bar and Grill and were hopeful based on the location and reviews. When we first arrived, we were greeted and told we could sit anywhere, which we appreciated. The atmosphere seemed casual and welcoming at first. After sitting down, however, we waited approximately 15-20 minutes before our waiter came to the table. During that time, no one checked on us or acknowledged the wait. When the waiter finally arrived, they asked what we wanted to order, and we placed our food and drink orders. I ordered the honey chicken, and my husband ordered the Union Burger, requesting it to be cooked medium. Unfortunately, the food was a major disappointment. The honey chicken was not fully cooked, which immediately ruined the meal for me. I've seen photos of this dish in other customer reviews, and what I received looked very different from what is typically presented. My husband's Union Burger also did not come out as ordered. It was cooked medium-rare instead of medium, very plain, and the burger was soaked in bacon grease, which made it unpleasant to eat. The quality and preparation did not match what we were expecting from a restaurant in this area. We understand that it was game day, and there were some groups and couples dining, but the restaurant did not appear overly busy at the time. Because of that, the long wait time and lack of attention were even more frustrating. We ordered two lemonades with our meal and were hoping to get refills, but after our food was delivered, our waiter never returned to check on us. No one asked how the food was, if we needed anything else, or offered refills. We were essentially left to finish the meal on our own. On a positive note, the restaurant itself was clean, including the bathrooms, which were well-maintained. The area felt safe, and there is a parking garage conveniently located next to the restaurant. They do validate parking, which is definitely a plus. The bar also appeared to have a wide selection of alcohol, although we did not order any alcoholic drinks during our visit. Overall, while the cleanliness and location were good, the customer service and food quality fell far short of expectations. Between the undercooked chicken, incorrectly prepared burger, lack of follow-up from our waiter, and long initial wait time, the experience was disappointing. I grabbed a quick lunch at this place with a co-worker while on a business trip. We both ordered the Jamaican Curry Bowl which was the perfect meal for a busy work day. It's a generous serving of Basmati rice with chicken (one can choose shrimp too) smothered in this flavorful curry sauce. The interior is comfortable with lots of choices for seating. Came here with some coworkers, one of them lives right next door and always raves about this spot, and now I see why! The drinks were strong (just how I like them). I ordered a mojito and they didn't skimp on the mint, it was perfectly balanced and refreshing. We also had a few shots, and the pours were generous, which is always a plus. I got the lamb chops with mashed potatoes while my coworker got theirs with fries. The chops were packed with flavor. The chimichurri sauce was amazing! ended up pouring it all over my velvet-smooth, buttery mash, and it took everything up a notch. We kept seeing this bar a few times we came in town and today decided to try them out.. A bar empty on football Sunday, with multiple residents living around to pack the place. Oh it's a bad sign to begin with but I paid it no mind. Ordered food and drinks the first glass was dirty with lip gloss still on it after she made the drink and the remake the glass was chipped.. We ordered jerk chicken tenders, shrimp tacos and a hot honey chicken sandwich( that came out 45mins later)that came out in 4mins.. mind you there's no one at the bar and barely 3 tables sat, but after we ordered the bar become busy but the rest of the restaurant is empty. I don't know if this was a off day but the tenders were pre-made frozen nuggets drowned in a bbq-jerk sauce tasted terrible.. shrimp tacos were the best item we ordered. Bartender never gave us napkins cutlery or even asked how the food was till we asked for everything or got it ourselves.. she wasn't doing anything but standing around at times or looking uninterested in being at work... Even the customers next to us were having their own food & drink issues.. My hot chicken sandwich came out super late (now 1hr)and not how I ordered it.. when the Manager "fixed it" I received a regular fresh chicken sandwich again not what I ordered.. unfortunately we didn't have time to continue playing around here and just closed our bill manager gave a little discount but for the time and experience we had wasn't enough.. I let the Bartender know about the chipped cup at the end cause I didn't want the attitude with pointing this out again cause that her job.. While I had the address to this location, It was a bit tucked away in the metro's surrounding area that has been grossly populated with apartments. The parking situation was a bit tricky, but if you part in the garage, they provide parking for two hours, so it was okay. We ordered the Lamb Chops, Union Bar Sliders, Brussel Sprouts and Sweet & Mild wings, calamari, fries & hummus. Everything we ordered was pretty tasty. The brussel sprouts were pretty good, however I did think they could have used more sauce, so I ordered more from our server. We also ordered margaritas, which were the right amount of sweet and tangy. I am assuming that because it was a weekday, the bar was pretty full but the dining room had available seating. Our server was very patient and allowed us time to look over the menu and order various items. I do like that fact that there is a restaurant within walking distance that seems to have pretty consistent and tasty food options. I would definitely visit again- especially after work for HH. My last review of the year! An Indian chef owns this spot, but the menu doesn't necessarily reflect that. I give this place a solid 3.6. It's not a 3... Or a 3.5. It's not a 4 but I'm rounding up. Let's get into why. You wouldn't expect to see a restaurant the second you get off the New Carrollton metro. But with the creation of so many new apartments, this restaurant is at the base of one of them. Parking seems awfully limited, but there's a garage right around the corner and The Union is conveniently able to validate up to two hours in there. Once stepping inside, the layout is open and quite nice. Bar straight ahead, tables everywhere, nice decor, and chairs that are architectually intriguing. Someone doesn't seat you -- you can seat yourself. The vibe really is something -- even the Iveys were dining in when I was there! My neighbor and I caught up after a while... We really do need to hang more given he's a 5 minute walk away LOL. Anyways, we sat at the bar... I had the brussel sprouts and the Thai Coconut Shrimp soup. Loved the brussels, though they had more cheese on them than I expected. But no worries -- it was still very good! The soup was perfect in terms of taste, but I just wish it had more shrimp (there were just 3 in the bowl), and the ginger root (I think) was tough and I had to keep spitting it out. For the less patient folks, I'd say it's a choking hazard. Fast forward to catching up with some buddies... It was happy hour time. This is from 4-7 everyday and the entire menu is 10% off. Not too shabby. I decided to try the salmon... Honey glazed, on a bed of polenta and served with spinach on the side. The presentation was lovely... Though, due to the positioning on the plate, something felt like it was missing in one side. The meal would've been a 10 but the spinach held it back. It's one of my favorite veggies, but it was salty... Beyond salty. That's one item they should work on. Other things to take note of... The staff are super cool. They never seem stressed out and they act quite professional. There were several various tables (and the bar) occupied throughout our time there, but service left a lot to be desired. It took quite a while for some things... Especially drinks. And it doesn't apply to me directly, but my friend asked for a medium steak, and first got a well done and then a medium well... I'm not a big steak guy but I know how important temperature and cooking specs are to the fans. Even getting the check took a while, that took us over the 2 hour parking validation limit... And this is key. Once you pass that point, you have to pay $7 to get out of the garage. That's steep for little PG County... majorly! As much as I love the vibe of the place, it currently is not somewhere I feel alright spending that much money to park at just to hang out for an extended amount of time. Parking aside (I think that's out of their control), I hope the downsides I mentioned are resolved. Improved service, and the kinks with some of the food items would help greatly. They got the ambiance down, and their music playlists have been awesome. I wonder if there's a parking workaround I can find... the Metro garage? It's cheaper ... But it's a walk. We came in for a bite around 8pm. It wasn't too busy so we sat up at the bar. It didn't take us long to decide what we wanted so we ordered right away. We ordered 2 lemonades , the union burger, and boneless wings. It ended up taking 1.5 hours for our food to come out. After 40 minutes, the bartender told us there was a 'mix up' in the kitchen but the restaurant did not seem busy enough for a mix up. My boneless wings came out about 15 minutes later and then the burger took 20-30 minutes longer after that. The staff didn't seem to care about this mix up and nothing was taken off our bill or offered to us for this mix up. I didn't expect anything to be free , but the staff just didn't seem to care that our food took so long. We watched another couple come in , order , eat , drink & leave before we finished our food . What should have taken at most 1 hour , lasted 2 and impeded on existing plans we had after. The place is exceptionally beautiful and the service on a Tuesday at 4 we had the honor of having the lovely jomirah(sp) she was beyond excellent and we had such great service all the way through. I gave her my order accidentally super quick and she was able to remember every single thing I ordered for my party of 3. We started off with a sweet and unsweetened tea it sadly taste like water and no tea. She brought out all of our food as it was prepared and she was quick ! We started with our sides of Brussel sprouts came out hot and crispy they had a nice balsamic glaze on them as well as Parmesan cheese. It was pretty good for $1 you can add bacon. The lamb chops were so good they were juicy and well seasoned I wish they were a bit bigger but they were so well seasoned I think I can live with the price. The crab cake was great it was no filler and seasoned well. I wasn't a fan of the mashed potatoes they tasted like box mashed potatoes but no butter added my mom liked them. The beef egg rolls were okay the wrapping was a bit hard but the flavor was pretty good. We love that everything came out hot and as they were made. I am happy to see that there is new restaurant close to my house. It is right by the New Carrollton Metro. When I arrived I was told that it was open seating. I was ordering my food to go and it didn't seem like that process has been refined, but I'm sure they will in time. The chef was there and I'm glad that I got to talk with him before I ordered. I ended up ordering the shrimp and grits. I loved how creamy the grits were. The lamb chops were tiny! They gave me 3 instead of 2 so I wonder if it was to make up for the size. We had the sheet pan nachos while we waited for our to go food. They were okay but I would have appreciated more toppings. I was invited to a small celebration here and was seated with what became a party of 10. I'll say I've never worked in hospitality so I'm not sure where the deficiency lies, I'll just relay how it went. In a word: Disappointing. My understanding is that this is a newer spot. It's tucked into a mini town-center feeling space in a residential area near the New Carrollton Metro. Street parking is limited and free (I think); Paid parking is in marked spaces inside the garage that also serves another business and residential parking for the apartment dwellers. There is a 2 hour limit - marked on signs in the garage and the restaurant, and they offer validation. However, it doesn't work when the service is so slow and disjointed that the first drinks ordered took more than an hour to come out, and most of them came out wrong and had to go back (mine was comped bc a portion of it was spilled). The food I saw on the table looked good - I ordered the beef egg rolls. The meat texture was a bit strange. No real tooth to it, very mushy. And inclusive of tax and gratuity it was over $20. For four tiny egg rolls. Back to the food though, it came sporadically as did the drinks, the dishes were announced correctly but the wrong food was placed (think: One person ordered sliders but was delivered a huge chicken sandwich). Seemed a bit strange as the place wasn't terribly crowded. And not all of this was the fault of the server. Poor guy was doing his best. I'm sure someone was aware that things weren't going well as someone came by to ask if everything was okay. This person was standing immediately to my left and I started to speak, but then excused myself as I realized he wasn't talking to me - which he confirmed verbally in a most sassy tone "I was speaking directly to (guest of honor)". Ok, fam. Ok. I finished my drink and left... only to find that the pay on foot machine didn't have a mobile tap option. I eventually got out of the parking garage, well over their two-hour limit. When we got there, we were seated right away. The place was decorated nicely very clean. The servers and staff were very nice and friendly. We started with appetizers. We had the sweet and mild sesame glazed wings were very flavorful. The lamb chops were excellent very tender and lots of flavor. The Thai coconut soup was OK I think it needed less coconut milk and it needed a little more flavor. They were out of the calamari. the sheet pan nachos were good. It's a lot of nachos. We went to The Union Bar and Grill for a late-night pre-birthday date. The place has modern, stylish décor but feels cozy and relaxed. They played chill R&B that worked for everyone. Ari provided fantastic service by being attentive and communicative. We tried only appetizers--Lollipop-Style Lamb Chops, Union Bar Slider, and Calamari. The food was fine, not outstanding, though it might be because we arrived close to closing time. Based on other positive reviews and the excellent service, I would visit again. Overall, the staff was very friendly and helpful, the vibe was terrific, the music was good, and the atmosphere felt easygoing. read more

Union Bar and Grill is a fairly new establishment. The ambiance and decor are modern and chic. My favorite dish were the lamb chops. I would come back just for those. The Brussel sprouts were decent. The mash potatoes needed a bit more butter and seasoning. I would like to try some other drinks. I ordered a lemon drop but was unimpressed. Cute spot with stylish decor and well-designed interiors. I've been twice and enjoyed the food both times, consistently well-executed and flavorful. Service is friendly but occasionally slow or forgetful. The music was too loud for daytime dining, making it difficult to hold a conversation or concentrate. This evening was my first time going to Union Bar and Grill! As soon as I entered the bar, I was greeted by friendly staff. I ordered the Blackberry Spritz Gin. Great choice, I must say. However, I will like to talk about the menu! They offer items that will accommodate everyone's dietary preferences/choices. I ordered 6 lamb chops, mashed potatoes, and spinach. Everything was seasoned to perfection. Try this combination please, even though the yellow rice was tempting. Lastly, I orders the rainbow chard! Oh my gosh! Long story shor, I will be back again . Well let me take you on this journey (Dec 6 @ 8pm) ....First let's start this establishment opened in September 2024 and is not black owned. I learned about this restaurant via my friend via social media. We were excited that a new restaurant in pg county (because we don't have many) & it was only 20min from our home. Upon walking up to door, you can hear the music provided by the establishment playing -no big deal right? WRONG; music was loud and vulgar inside and outside. Every song played. Once inside, there's no hostess stand BUT the male waiter greets you and states you can seat anywhere. Cool. Once seated, we did noticed a party gathering (but wrapping up) to our left and informed the waiter know it was our first time and to enlighten us on his menu favs. We ordered waters and alcoholic beverages to start BUT never received our beverages. Why? Well the party made it way to the bar to order more drinks & mingle with staff, the HEAD CHEF was enjoying his meal and walking around & mingling as well, the female MANAGER was arranging chairs then went to bar to enjoy her meal, an OUTSIDER came off the street and grab food from chef window to eat & mingle. Our waiter took more beverages over to the party area, music so loud couldn't hear my friend across from me (was gonna ask for it to be turned down but waiter never returned) witnessing all of this on a matter of 15min, we decided to leave along with 7 other guests who was never greeted at door or witnessed the same. Did I let management know? OF COURSE I DID! Manager and head chef listened Even though they were apart of the problem. As a community, we beg for more establishments in the county and this is what we get? not sure if my suggestions and complaints will be taken heed to BUT it'll be awhile before I return. Management STEP IT UP! As I told you, social media can make or break a business. Do better. More hospitality training needed. And pick edited, diverse pandora station to play at low comfortable volume for ALL guests. Something positive: 1) there's no grass wall decor. That tends to be a red flag for most restaurants lol.
