The second time was uncomfortable because Karen was loudly spouting some pretty hateful and discriminatory opinions of political and religious nature. Normally I try to hold space for people's opinions. We learn a lot from each other just by listening, and it's nice to get an expanded perspective when we're open to other people's experiences and another point of view. BEANS is NOT this kind of environment. Sadly. It's like the owner is trying to out-Woke her own self. I'm lbgtq and disabled. What's happening here is not the kind of advocacy we need. We don't create safe spaces by hating on everyone who is not just exactly like us. Most of us just want to not have constant conflict, confrontation and political or social strife. Standing up for others rights is one thing. Intentionally creating discord is quite another. This experience is not great for anyone with anxiety, or needs peace and calm, with a sensory processing disorder or preference to avoid conflict. Hate doesn't need a seat at the table.
