Sandra Michaan who oversees this event brings the most unique vendors with various eras and wares so beautifully displayed. Sandra also runs the Alameda Point Antiques Faire which always is the first Sunday of every month. I have much enjoyed when the event when it was held at the Albert H. DeWitt Officers' Club (O' Club as it is more commonly known) on the former Alameda Naval Base. It has also been held at Rock Wall Wine Company and more recently at the Michaan's Annex Auction Showroom. I have enjoyed the evolution of this show and always find something for myself that I have to have. While some have complained about pricing please keep in mind that these items are vintage scarce hard to source and getting harder to find thus the price you pay. But I find that in most cases the prices are not set in stone there is room for negotiation. I have never paid the marked price. I find that many of the vendors are quite knowledgeable about the wares in which they sell. And are happy to give information freely if asked. I don't mind the entrance fee I mean $ 5.00!!?? For what could be a days entertainment and people watching. And there are always themes the last theme was "Sci-Fi Drive-In" spaced themed. There has been the fabulous 1940's, old Hollywood glamour, Steampunk, Mad for Mod, and the 1950's. There are food vendors there and sometimes coffee a well. I have long enjoyed this show and I will only continue to attend. Sandra Michaan keep up the great work and I hope your shows only continue to grow.

I call that double dipping-- charge the vendors AND the customers. But, it was on the island,and my husband and I wanted something fun to do together. We thought the $5 entree might be worth it. Since it was cash only, my husband went inside to the ATM. While he was there, I tried to peek in best I can to see if I thought it might be worth the entrance fee. I was, oh, say, 10 feet from the entrance and tried to look through the door. As soon as I did, some d00d, about 6'4" moved to block my sight line, obviously on purpose. Um. Okay. You're strange, but I can deal with it. Husband came back with the cash and gave it to the amazingly less than friendly women at the door. We walked to the entrance and watched while the three people at the door blocked the folks trying to leave. Not on purpose, but it was pretty clear they didn't have a clue about about customer service. I moved over to let them pass, and looked at the guy doing most of the blocking, and he finally moved. Um. Okay. So, I walk up to the guy with the stamps. He stamps my hand, because my husband is obviously right behind me with the tickets. But. Wait. Big tall guy who previously blocked my line of sight now moves directly in front of me. I'm staring at a skinny tie, some ten inches in front of me. Some woman, who seems to be part of the Super Duper Security Detail, joins him to block my way. I feel slightly threatened and wonder why, since it is clear my husband, who has the tickets, is right behind me. (No throngs of near rioting masses here, it wasn't a Jones Brothers concert, there were, say, twelve people in the lobby and six of them were workers.) Eh. We make it through the Super Duper Security Detail and into the exhibit area. Meh. Not bad, not great. The prices are high because the cost to vend there is high. Nothing I see I want. I get to the end of row 1 and look. And, guess what. There is a row 2. But no rows 3-7. Really? We paid $5 for this? You know that feeling that you get when you think you've been cheated? Yeah. That one.

We decided to go with the gold instead of the red envelopes. For six envelopes, the price was $3.50. We were in and out of there in less than five minutes. The only item we could not find was a Chinese wedding card. We figured the gold envelope (money enclosed) was good enough to give my nephew and his bride-to-be their wedding gift. I'm just glad that we did not spend a lot of time shopping for those envelopes in Oakland Chinatown.

But many of these books are very reasonably priced, like $7.50-$25! Almost all of the stock is older, even obscure books. But it's a book lover's treasure hunt. I picked up a really interesting book about San Francisco's history from 1948 for only $10! Definitely recommend this place and it's a very quick walk from the Broadway BART station. The only thing I'd "change" is recommending that the owner put more of their stock on ThriftBooks.com to enhance their profits. But that would be at the peril of Bay Area bookworms! :)

At the time, I was pretty sad, because I lived on the east coast. Little did I know, I'd find myself in the area after all. This shop is a nice little oasis for designers who just love nicely designed little every day objects. Hische stocks this place with all kinds of delightful things. I think the best part is that there are things at all price points. It's not just some snobby place, where nothing costs less than $100. There are solid quality and affordable pens, as well as some specialty items that are on the more expensive side. There is even original designs/works of art from Hische herself. Definitely a fun spot to check out if you're in the area. Highly recommend!

There's actual art supplies, pins, art books and kids books, some branded items like shirts, totes, onesies, and cool stuff like gorgeous desk clocks or hourglass timers that I can't afford lol. Anyways, worth a visit if you're in the area. I ended up getting a bunch of my holiday shopping done for my creative friends.
