I finally made it here!!! YAY I had no idea this was also a full size restaurant where you can order food and dine in!! Next time i will plan to eat in and try their food Ice cream is ok no wow factor, and low key kinda expensive to be honest.... however portions are big There is indoor and outdoor seating Inside is very clean Customer service is very friendly Small private parking lot

Love coming to fentons year after year. Place has great hospitality and an old time diner feel. The owner supports the community with special events to bring people together. Ice cream is always rich and creamy. Can't go wrong! Favorite is coffee cookie dream and the black and tan sundaes.

Brownie sundae

Such a cute atmosphere! I've been coming here for years and somehow haven't written a review until now. There is usually a line at the counter. I like to ask to be seated- it's usually faster! I was sat right away on a Saturday around 4pm. Ordered a brownie sundae. It's definitely a lot to share. Between 2 adults we couldn't finish it. It was so good! I've always had positive interactions with staff here.

Tuna melt with curly fries

My party of 3 was seated right away on a Sunday evening around 8:30pm, and there was a good amount of people waiting by the time we left. We got the tuna melt with curly fries, side of onion rings, and the petite ice cream dish (cookies n cream ice cream topped with hot fudge). Tried some of the crab sandwich too which was alright and my friend said the clam chowder was overly salty. I liked how we could choose the cheese for our tuna melt. Solid classic tuna melt. Curly fries and onion rings were classic too. Ice cream sundae was pretty good too and I'm glad that they have a petite version of the ice cream dish since their ice cream portions are huge. I think this spot is definitely more for the old timey diner vibes rather than mindblowing food.

BANANA SPECIAL

This ice cream spot/diner is iconic. If you grew up in the East Bay or visited, there's a good chance you've been here before. I've been here a long time ago and think it was the original building / location during that visit. On this visit, my nephew and I were in the area, grabbing dinner and thought it would be really fun to stop by this spot for dessert. Also, Alysa Liu just got the gold medal in the Olympics and I was swelling with East Bay pride. When we got there, the place was really busy. Although we were able to get seated right away because people were mainly ordering ice cream at the front counter. The room where we were seated it's pretty large and bright. It was a fun and active vibe in there. Our waitress showed up and I wanted to get some crazy concoction and I can't remember exactly what I got, but it was one of the banana sundaes. My nephew ended up just getting two scoops in an ice cream dish. We both enjoyed our ice cream and I was telling my nephew about my experiences growing up in the East Bay a little bit and how this place was immortalized and one of my favorite movies 'Up'. Overall, just a great time with delicious ice cream and great, friendly service. They have their own parking lot, but I was able to find some street parking right across the street from the location. I would just warn you, however, that when you're parking on the street, try to not keep anything of value visible.

This place has its own dedicated parking lot, though I was able to find free street parking less than a block away during my recent visit. I knew this would be a reliable spot for a quality chocolate milkshake, but I didn't realize I'd find an even better flavor... dutch chocolate chip! Made up of dark chocolate and chocolate chips, it was an easy choice this past weekend. I got a regular size milkshake, no whip. It was perfect! An ideal thickness, a rich and delectable chocolatey taste, and plenty of yummy chocolate chunks which I was able to scoop up with the long thin spoons provided by the restaurant & creamery in addition to the straws. I appreciated the instant service on a Sunday morning, just before noon. Staff was friendly and professional and made me one of the best milkshakes I've ever had. Plus, I was in and out in just 5 minutes and able to enjoy my sweet treat to go. The positive experience at Fentons put me in a good mood for the rest of my day :)

There's a huge line almost always so don't be fooled by it if you're trying to dine in. The lines for the scoop and go. Service is not great here -- your food may not arrive and you will certainly have to ask for it if they bring the check and only half of your food has arrived. I'll chalk it up to them being short staffed... sure. This is casual scoop and go or dine in. The ice creams dishes are delicious and definitely meant to be shared! Even the Fentons special JUNIOR was big and between 3 people for dessert it was enough. Parking is on the street as their lot is pretty small.

A staple every time im back in Oakland. I love that there's two different lines when you arrive, one to sit in and dine and other just for ice cream. The line for ice cream can sometimes have a bit of a wait and parking is limited so i suggest getting there right before dinner time service. The staff are polite and fast, pretty much an in and out service. I do believe you get two free samples which they have so many flavors to choose from! The inside of the restaurant feels like an old school diner that has a homey feel to it! They also have special sometimes and when I stopped in last time it was the "Alyssa's Gold" which I thought was pretty good!

Milk shake!

If you are looking for that good old American soda fountain comfort foods menu, this is the Authentic Original! Menu is quite extensive, filled with homey family friendly diner foods and their ice cream sundaes are wonderful. You can choose from all their flavors and customize your own or select from their signature sundaes and milk shakes. As for milkshakes, you can ask for with or without whip cream and either way, it's with any flavor of your choosing. So we had mocha royal, our fav! Definitely did not disappoint! Yum! Both crab and tuna sandwiches are prepared in SF sourdough breads. We loved how the buttered sour dough bread slices were grilled to bring out the best in the fillings. Crunchy toasty exterior but chewy with fillings of either crab or tuna - these sandwiches are just the right size and ... ah to die for! Service was friendly and as attentive as expected mid-day. The ambiance is that of retro feel-good cheerful lemon yellow grandma vibe, but it's got that pop groovy feel as well. Sundaes&milkshakes&grilled sandwiches&fries!! It's a decadent reward, meetups or birthday celebrations or just because... we deserve this kind of Americana diner experience from time to time. It's a delightful place worth coming back to !

Came here during Chinese lunar new year and open ordered the large Hyundai. I got the mint chocolate chip ice cream with Alyssa gold it is a very good ice cream. Service here is very fast and reliable, super friendly. The ambience is very nice as well because there's an indoor and outdoor seating personally in a very nice area like the Piedmont.

What better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon than at the local creamery. We drive all the way from the tri-valley for this special place and usually find street parking nearby. We must have caught the end of the lunch rush because all tables were full but there was just a 5-10 minute wait to be seated which was great. We came for lunch and the menu is extensive - salads, sandwiches, appetizers. This time we started with the jalapeno poppers and mozzarella sticks. Both were delicious. The Crab Louis salad was generously portioned with a very yummy thousand island dressing. The Cobb Salad (regular size, not the Large) was HUGE. No complaints and half went home with me as leftovers. Both salads were fresh and crisp. Definitely a good healthy option because you know we left room for ice cream! Notable: bummer that the app and entrees arrived at the same time. We didn't receive our sodas until after the food arrived, but did have water from the time we sat down so no big deal. Our server was helpful and cheerful. A good visit all around.

Fast, friendly service even though it's a long line it moves fast on Friday night, especially! We had Jamaica almond fudge, blueberry cheesecake, and Swiss Miss chocolate and Heath bar

Super cute diner/ice cream parlor. There aren't very many of these around so it's a cute spot to stop by. We stoped by for ice cream and it was good but a tad bit sweet for our liking. The staff were nice and helped us fairly quickly. The strawberry cream cheese was lacking cheesecake we felt & focused on the artificial strawberry flavor more.

Is Fenton Oakland still closed for remodeling?

No. They are open

What's the difference between Cobb salad and grilled chicken salad?

The cobb Salad will have rows of chopped egg, crumbled bacon, avocado, blue cheese crumbles, tomato, cucumber and a chicken breast. As our Grilled chicken salad will just have chicken, tomato and cucumber.

Does Fenton's take reservations?

12 people or more if you do it in advance and give a $100 deposit for a 2 hour slot.

What is the covid protocol ? Do we need to show vaccination proof or negative covid test results to dine in? Are tables socially distant or the normal close quarters seating ? Any masks required for entry signs? Re: Oakland location, specifically.

I went last night and they didn't check vaccination proofs or Covid tests. People didn't really socially distance either and I saw several people walk around the restaurant without a mask. A few of their staff had their masks under their noses as…

Who can I speak with to confirm that fentons received my cake order successfully? I called multiple times today and It went to voice mail and was not accepting voice messages.…

Hello Steve - please press "0" so we can talk to you - otherwise call on our direct number 510-658-8500 we are here 9am to 10pm. Thank you for the business. Scott

Is fentons open on Monday September 7th 2020 Labor Day?

Yes, we are open for Take-out and Patio seating on Labor Day :)... and every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas.…

Whats the best way to get an outside table?

Can I just get a black and tan but just with fudge because I found the caramel too sweet?

I am not sure.

Thinking of bringing my kid here for his birthday, do the sing Happy Birthday?

Yes, they sing BIG TYME Birthday,, and if you order the kitchen sink for the birthday person/ it’s really a BIG DEAL

I was able to order guava ice cream for a catering event. However I have never been able to get it in person at Fenton's. Is this available?

It is seasonal. You can call and ask if they have it.

How many days in advance do I have to give to order a cake? And do they have premade cakes I can just go in and grab?

There is a form on their website to place ice cream cake order request. I have not seen pre-made cakes on display at the restaurant.

Do they take American Express?

Yes.

How do I order cake online?

Go to Fenton's website and download cake form - you can bring it in or fax it to them. You can also call them to confirm details.

Do they still have crab sandwiches ? I used to get that or a combo sandwich of egg salad and ripe olives on sourdough w lots of pickles. Are these sandwiches gone too? They were delish!!!

I usually order their crab sandwich. They still serve that.

Garlic Noodles: The garlic noodles had a nice char flavor to it. We could see them set it on fire from the bar, although we felt that the garlic noodles could have had a bit more salt and garlic in them. The shrimp also tasted frozen but they were still good. Bo Luc Lac: We enjoyed the bo luc lac as well, it was cooked well and quite tender. It was very flavorful to the point it made us wish we had ordered the dirty rice with it. Cocktails: For drinks I asked the bartender what he recommended and offered to make me something. It wasn't off-menu, but he made the Pillow Talks which had gin, calamansi and egg white in it. It had a nice flavor profile and balance and creaminess to the drink. I also ordered the Pandanmonium which is a pandan old fashioned which I really enjoyed. Eventually I figured it out - they have menus at one of the counters and as I was looking one over, a man came up and asked what I would like. I liked it so much that I brought it home, and my partner said it tasted like refried beans (though he did have them cold). The crusty warm bread was perfect for dipping, and I ended up not being able to finish it. The chai was pretty milky; there was a tea bag and the spices weren't very strong. Then again, I'm used to Indian chais. I would pass on the chai. There was basically no one else there on a Friday afternoon during off-peak hours. As a result, it took a while for them to be able to stop by our table and provide water, take our order, etc. There was quite a long wait between sitting down to ordering to actually receiving our food. By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.

This place might have become my favorite fast-casual burger joint in Oakland…read more Since my first review, I've enjoyed their food three more times -- in person once and DoorDash twice. And it's been satisfying and well worth it all three times. I recommend both dining in and delivery. You cannot go wrong with their double burger. The smashed patties are perfectly cooked and seasoned. The supporting elements are quality and executed spot-on each time: the cheese, grilled onions, and mayo. It's a perfect fast casual burger. I also recently tried the Chopped Beef burger and dang it was amazing. The hearty meat and cheese the and buttery bread texture hit hard. This will be another go-to and I recommend it. For sides I've gotten tator tots, regular fries, and season fries. All fantastic and they're generous with the portions. HOWEVER -- you've gotta get the seasoned fries. Addictive and finger-licking amazing. When dining in staff is always friendly. Area's not too busy and you'll always find parking easily down a side street. And price wise it honestly feels like a steal for me given the care and quality and pure satisfaction. Works for me though -- I'm going to keep ordering from this place. Cannot recommend this gem of a burger joint enough. Fantastic seasoning and execution, solid prices, and absolutely satisfying every time.

I ordered the turkey club and it was honestly huge. You can see in the photo how big it is compared to my hand. It was stacked and super satisfying, the kind of sandwich that definitely fills you up. We also shared a deviled egg and some fried zucchini to start, which were great little bites before the main dish. The zucchini was crispy and light, and the deviled egg was simple but really good. I paired everything with a mocha latte that was perfectly balanced and honestly superb. Overall it was a ten out of ten brunch moment. Between the sunny weather, good coffee, and really satisfying food, it was exactly what we were looking for. Definitely one of those spots I would come back to for brunch again.

This was me and my husband's first time at the restaurant and the food here was excellent…read moreeverything was very good and flavorful. I gave it to stars because the service was really bad. Our waitress took very long to even acknowledge us, didn't person herself to be very friendly, and lacked any attentiveness to us as customers. We had to ask other people for things like refills on our drinks, condiments, etc. She didn't ever really try to check to see how things were going after the food was served and we had to ask someone else to pay. Unfortunately considering this experience my husband doesn't want to go back and I hate that for us because the food was really good.
