Planned this little staycation to escape the heat in the valley and the fact that our electricity was going to be turned off for maintenance of power supplies in the valley. Beautiful view! walking distance to the beach literally across the street. Nice small quaint hotel. Rooms appear clean. Fridge in room, TV, AC, desk, small closet, keurig, and ceiling fan. We got lucky and found a metered parking spot right in front. After 6pm it's free. We arrived around 5:40. Check-in is 4-6 pm. Let me preface this by saying I am not trying to be negative, but just honest. I gave this property a 3 rating because while I reserved my room with an ocean view earlier in the week, I showed up and was told that all rooms were gone with an ocean view I showed them my confirmation and then I was told that there was another room that was ready and I could have that one but it was more expensive.. No thank you. I said i requested a room with a view and received a response that it would be accommodated. Then I was told, well there is one that faces the front but we can't seem to get the guy out of the room to which I kindly asked , well what time is check out. He stated 11am, so then why is a guest still in the room? He told me to come back in an hour and hopefully the room would be ready. IT'S HOT and I was fit to be tied, but because we are right at the beach, we just walked over and sat for a while before coming back to finally check in. They provide amenities in a very small amount. Like only one person can use the shower gel. The bed did not have a top sheet. That was a first for me. I can't sleep under the duvet because of menopause so having a top sheet is nice. Not a very comfortable sleep for me, as bed was very firm. Toilet "ran" all night. Basically if you want peace and quite, stay somewhere else, but if you want great access to the beach and don't mind outside noise(people and cars), then this is the place Not a pleasant experience, but I managed. My experience at Bayside Hotel was atrocious. It was way too expensive for a tiny, badly decorated room with a view of a wall (I had asked for an ocean view) They charge an extra $36!!! per day for parking in such a small enclosed lot that you'd be lucky if your car doesn't get dinged or, for that matter stolen. No AARP or AAA discounts were mentioned by the reception staff and when I asked for alternate parking, the staff was not helpful at all. One of them--the guy--was downright rude, The outside of the hotel was a mess too. Old clothing, bikes. food and other crap were strewn everywhere. Even the outside smelled bad. I would feel ashamed to bring a guest to this hotel. There are plenty of other hotels in Santa Monica. Approximately same price, free, underground parking, elevator, AARP discount (mentioned by the staff), Rooms are well-appointed, nicely decorated, staff efficient and helpful. Some even have gyms. All for the same price. DO NOT stay at Bayside. It will ruin you Santa Monica experience. read more

I stayed here for 8 nights and will stay there again. They upgraded me from a Queen to a King (thanks). When my flight was delayed they let me check out late...and when I accidentally slept past my flight, the front desk called and woke me up lol. It's expensive, but that's the going rate - and much cheaper than other area hotels. Same for their parking - $30ish/night but I didn't have to worry about my car being towed. Perfect location. I was impressed with the kitchenette, didn't expect that. 2 fridges - wow. I'd def recommend the Bayside. My room over looked the parking lot lol. These pics are from outside my front door, "garden courtyard." Nice ambiance. Also you need a key to obtain access to the hotel...which is a huge security feature. No bums could sneak in! read more

My girlfriend and I are wrapping up our 5th and last day here. We will be back. The hotel, which I was told was recently remodeled, is wonderful. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff is friendly, courteous, and helpful. They have complementary beach towels, chairs, and umbrellas to take to the beach, which is across the street and a 5-10 minute walk to the pier. This is, without a doubt, the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The duvet cover was stained with... something. I rather sleep in my car than stay here ever again. I then proceeded to ask for another duvet. Most hotels can do this, but apparently, they do not have any spare duvets. They did, however, have another cover, which was also stained. They handed us the duvet cover and said they can not come up to change it. Strange. What takes things to a whole new level, is that the night manager said he would discount our stay. How kind we thought until we asked him whether or not it would be credited back to our card. The manager then said that he was not able to do anything about the charge after we booked the room. I would highly suggest everyone avoid a hotel that has dirty linens and a staff that will lie to their guests. The only convenient thing about this hotel is the location to the beach. read more

Charming and comfortable place to stay in Santa Monica and I would gladly stay again! Our friends got married at Shutters on the Beach and this was super conveniently placed. We booked early on a discount site, which helped with the steep price that is all you'll find if you want to be this close to the beach. Recently stayed here for a girls overnight trip with my daughter. We enjoyed ourselves. The room was clean, nicely decorated with beach decor. Bed was decent. Within walking distance to the beach. We were able to spend the evening at the Santa Monica Pier had dinner and walked on the beach then next day went and enjoyed the day at the beach. Overall experience was nice and comfortable. The only complaint is in LA all hotels you have to pay about $30 for parking I don't blame the hotel they have to do what they have to do especially being close to the beach. Parking lot is small on a first come first serve basis so I Made sure not to check in too late and we got a spot. There is no pool or jaccuzzi so if you are looking for those amenities not the place for you. Front desk was polite and easy checkin. read more

It's almost unreal how awful this place was. The worst part is that the front desk manager soured the entire experience, when he could have easily made it an enjoyable stay. If customer service is important to you, and you don't want to feel like staff is outright rude, then steer a wide path. The photos do NOT represent the property, it is much worse. It's true I am a light sleeper. However this has to be one of the worst night sleep I've ever had at a hotel. Let me put it this way, my room was right over the office, I thought it would be quiet there. But no, the night manager manager was really loud on the phone from about midnight until 1:15 AM when I had enough and went to knock on the door to tell him to be quiet.. Then a delivery truck rolled up at around that time with the laundry delivery & pickup Right under my room. Guests inconsideratly spoke loudly as they passed my room right near the stairs and in the office in the morning. And never mind the rock hard bed! Traffic noise and loud stereos are common here. I woke up sore and grouchier than usual. Recommend if you like extra firm beds & traffic noise and also curtains too small to cover the windows. read more

I've stayed here twice since reopening a few weeks a go to go mountain biking with my daughters up in the SM mountains. Clean, nice and the staff is very nice. I was delayed by hours getting back to check out and they were very cool a bout it. Also regarding Covid and other hotels at the moment: the advantage of a motel? - no lobbies to walk through and no elevators - right to the room. On the ocean, clean air. Can't beat it. This is the best kept secret in Santa Monica! I've lived here forever and needed to relocate temporarily and was delighted when I checked in here - from Robert, the manager, to desk clerks Chris and Costas (sp?) and all the wonderful maintenance and cleaning family, I was embraced with friendly professionalism even though I had to keep extending and changing my booking and having things delivered, and having my dogs come and visit, etc. I ended up living there for 2 months, and loved every minute. Staff is always available, never intrusive. If you are looking for the giant, impersonal Loew's, go there - it's right down the street. It's not really fair to come here and expect the Loews for 1/3 the price then complain when it's the Bayside. For me, this was MUCH more comfortable because the little flaws here and there made it imperfect and homey, which I find relaxing. I spilled a few things on my duvet and in the bathroom and kitchen, the dogs inevitably shed a little and barked a little, but it didn't stress me out like it would in a big corporate hotel. My room was perfect - surprisingly silent (!) comfortable, spacious and with incredible amenities like full kitchen (no microwave, but that's fine), fast free WiFi, very comfortable desk chair and 2 low-slung armchairs, yummy firm mattress with lots of variable pillows, crisp white sheets and very soft nice towels, heat/AC/fan and ceiling fan, lots of closet/dresser space, lights everywhere you want them, plenty of outlets, and windows that open in every room! The ocean breezes filled the space while I worked and slept, it was lovely. Also great ice maker, ha! This is at least as good a location as its pricey counterparts with incredible direct ocean views, a small but lovely courtyard with plantings and astroturf for the pups to explore, comfortable patio furniture to work, read or lounge, adorable string lights that aligned with my window in the evening (2nd floor) and friendly, down to earth guests to interact with, if you choose. Walking distance to the Expo Line and all the shops and restaurants on Main Street and Ocean Ave, and of course the beach and pier. If you are local and have need of some solitude or solace during these very stressful times, I strongly suggest taking a few days' "social distancing" at this restorative little jewel. Like so many small businesses, the sudden collapse of tourism and travel is devastating to them, and please trust me - we want this place to stay open! read more

Little hick ups that are expected for a hotel in this price range- no bottom sheet on bed, hot and cold reversed in shower, bed very squeaky it would wake my wife up if I rolled around. I was VERY pleasantly surprised when we got to the hotel it was in a GREAT location walking distance to everything we wanted to see. The front desk staff were very helpful giving directions and helpful hints of what to see and maybe stay clear of in the evening, (Venice beach) We stayed in the king room with garden view and loved the full kitchen and bathroom. Lots of windows and light in the room. Very quaint and cozy. You can hear some talking of people if in the room next to you. Nothing bad at all though. We really loved it for our mama/daughter trip. Perfect getaway on the west coast and I would highly recommend the Santa Monica farmers market on Wed. Or Sun. We bought all kinds of food we kept in the kitchen to save money on meals and the market was huge with great food selections! We had a wonderful time and would stay here again for sure! read more

This place obviously was not built as a hotel... It was originally studio apartments. I can tell it was built in the 60s, because the bathroom and the closets were identical to the house I grew up in. There was a little kitchenette, and the overall room was a very nice size. Everything had been redone fairly recently in a beachy type theme, and it was very nice. This is not a five star hotel, this is a great place to call a temporary home, in a great location, walking distance to everything in Santa Monica. They have parking in a back lot for an additional fee. And you can rent bicycles. I'm not sure how the price of the bikes compares to the bikes you can rent around town. I had an ocean view room, and it was lovely. The people at the front desk are very nice and very helpful. There are very few amenities on site, but everything you would ever need is close by. read more

I did not have a good experience with this place. I booked a reservation online, only to show up to discover that they had double-booked the room. The guy at the front desk was clearly frazzled. The mistake was on the hotel's end, but he asked me to use my personal phone to call the reservation center myself to get them to refund the room and book me in a new place. My phone was almost out of battery. Nevertheless, I called and waited 30 minutes to speak with a representative. Long story short, I got a room at another hotel, but Bayside did not pay for my cab or offer any apologies for the mix-up. read more

Tricked by Travelzoo! I was stoked to see a beachfront "hotel" in Santa Monica for just $129...and the photos on the website looked too good to be true. But, I took the plunge and hoped for the best... You'll hardly recognize the place when you show up, as the website seems to use photos from their small number of "renovated" rooms (which you probably wont end up in.) The rest of the rooms look are classic motel style. I literally laughed when I walked in...so completely different than what they advertised. Yucky floral bedspread, plastic shades on the windows, tiny television (not the fancy flatscreens they boast about on the website). Thank god for that view of the beach when you open your door...the only thing that matched the website photos. I booked a "garden view" room, which ended up being a" cement wall view" room. I was too tired to complain. The bathroom had no toiletries, and asking the front desk for some was a fruitless venture. Parking is a pain, as it's all metered and starts at 9am. Plus the 3am - 5am sweep zone makes it sort of impossible. The hotel parking lot in back was full at all times, but I wouldn't have parked there anyway because it was so impacted I thought I'd get trapped. The one good thing about this place is the location. Close to main street, the beach, and the 3rd street promenade. But, if you're there for business it'll be quite the adjustment. read more

It's by the beach, yes. But after looking for parking for an hour, waiting for 2 hours for our room to be ready, the only thing I looked forward to was getting as far away from the place as possible. Located a nice walking distance from the Santa Monica Pier, the location of Bayside is nice. Close to restaurants, shops and fun - but all those are but a disappointment when you return to your room. As if a final insult to my stay as I showered in the morning before checkout the tired linens they provide as towels were filled with holes and merely scraped the water from my body. I've slept in worse. Probably. At some point. The rooms were tiny, but the beds were comfortable. I was here on someone else's dime, so I had no idea this place was so expensive, but man, I would not pay that much to stay here. I will say, the housekeeping was great, they kept our room refreshed, but for two people staying in one room, the fact that they only left us one washcloth on the second morning was... Irksome. I would have rated it better, but I woke up one morning to find both a cockroach and a silverfish on my bathroom floor. Yeah, ew. Sure, it's near the beach, that's nice. I could have slept *on* the beach and had fewer bugs near me, I'm sure. If those were the two I saw, I can only imagine what lurked while I slept. I'm glad that I have a sound-sleeper for a service dog, or he might have been up all night chasing fuzzy things on the floor.
