I have struggled with mental health challenges for most of my life. No matter how much effort I put…read morein, I often didn't respond to traditional treatments. In September 2025, my psychiatrist, NP Shadette Soriano, recognized that something still wasn't right and recommended HealthyU's PHP and IOP programs. I am incredibly grateful that I took her advice. From beginning to end, my experience with HealthyU has been nothing short of life-changing. It's true that "it gets worse before it gets better," and I feel so fortunate to have had such compassionate clinicians and supportive peers beside me during the hardest parts of treatment. After nearly six months in the program, I came out stronger, more prepared to manage my illnesses, and learning to love myself a little more along the way. There is no way I could have done this without HealthyU. IOPs are called intensive for a reason. There is a full curriculum, deep emotional work, and days when you want to quit--my advice: don't. You don't have to show up at 100% every day -- the facilitators will meet you wherever you are and help carry the percentage you don't have. They genuinely care about every person who walks through those doors and truly want you to succeed. The group setting reminds you that you are not alone. The peer support is something you never forget. I have made lifelong friends who understand me without judgment, and I offer them that same understanding in return. In my heart, I know I would not be where I am today if I hadn't admitted myself to HealthyU. I don't know if I would even still be here. If you are feeling lost, lonely, or afraid that life will always feel this way, please consider HealthyU. There are people there who care deeply about you and will help you find your way forward.

Welp 2 weeks later and not a single message or call. He said they needed to find me a detox but that there's a "team" for that. It's funny because I called my insurance and was given names of approved detox centers in less than 5 minutes. Called them and was able to get in with no issue...thankfully. To think of all the people who don't advocate for themselves and continue with their addiction because companies don't care to even help them. No wonder people are struggling when you have companies like this. Definitely letting my insurance know to stop working with them. What a shame!!

I have been at the AKUA STRONG location for IOP since January after hitting on of the worst lows of my life. I walked in that door not knowing if I would even wake up the next day. Fast forward 8 months and ALOT of really heavy work. For the first time in almost 30 years...I feel a sence of self. I had been misdiagnosed for years, in and out of therapy amd treatment, but Akua...this is the last stop. I found something I didnt anywhere else. Community. One so close, I call them family. My team finally got to the root of my diagnosis and the work continued. They taught me how to use my voice and advocate for myself, and when I did they listened. From the facilitators to the case manager to the therapists even to the NP. They heard me. They saw me. I felt true safety walking into those doors as I was encouraged to let my inner child shine. I felt acceptance, unconditional acceptance walking through those doors even on my worst days. For the first time in my life I knew I didnt have to do this alone. And that just speaks to the team. They focus on so many parts of healing. Phycotherapy like CBT DBT and ACT. Somatic healing like Yoga and sound healing and even specific somatic groups. Healing through movement and laughter with dance amd karaoke. We dig deep some days and other we laugh it out. And I know I always have a place to go on my bad days after. With co dependency groups and alumni meetings and alumni events, the connections keeps the trajectory moving forward. My team Jen, Valentina and Hallie...hands down the best team. But I may be biased. Kersey is always thinking of new ideas too keep us all connected. Akua will forever have a place in my heart. My team will always have a place in my heart. And I am so incredibly thankful I walked into those doors 8 months ago. I finally know that healing is possible. Thank you Akua for helping me find myself, and for lighting the fire in my soul again. Thank you for changing my life.

Here is the thing: EVERYONE NEEDS A MENTAL HEALTH CHECK UP now and again! Even (or Especially!!)…read morethe ones that provide mental health services to others. If you want my professional opinion, I would choose Jamie every time, 100% of the time. She is caring and helpful and has talked me off a few cliffs. I may be able to do this well for other people but not so well for myself sometimes. No matter how much training, knowledge or how many years of experience, I need to run my issues by someone that can see things from a fresh perspective and help me get some insight. And she has been there so I trust her. I trust that she is helping me find my way down my path and when times are dark she spreads some light. Also, its hard to preach to others if you aren't willing to take the steps and do the work yourself! I can't tell my patients to do things and practice coping skills if I am not doing that myself. Right? I have been a family nurse practitioner for 6 years and I always tell my patients that just like getting a physical check up once a year, you should be getting a mental check up at least once a year. After all, it is your brain that drives your body so you are best served keeping it in tip-top shape! If you have any questions, hit up her website. I mean who puts in HUNDREDS of work hours to give you the most informative education on mental health issues? JAMIE! It is so deeply obvious that she cares and she wants stable mental health for everyone. I know she is busy and I don't know if she has openings but please do yourself a favor and try to book an appointment with her. Your check up may last one session or it may last for several but no matter what, you will get what you NEED to help you continue along your life path. Thank you Jamie :)

On Monday, July 13, 2026, at 2:00 PM, I visited the hospital due to a referral from my stomach…read moresurgeon. The surgeon had recommended an emergency room visit for abdominal pain/vomiting. Upon arrival, I remained quiet and sat alone in the emergency room. This was my first experience at this particular facility, as I had only visited Scripps Green and Scripps Lajolla. During my ER wait, I felt anxious and apprehensive. The atmosphere in the emergency room was unsettling, reminiscent of a crime scene. A security guard wielded a long red stick, threatening to strike a homeless individual who refused to comply. The homeless individuals present responded with aggressive behavior, including yelling and screaming. After approximately one hour, I was summoned back to the hospital. The only available bed was located in the hallway, not in a private room. I endured a two-hour wait before receiving a CT scan. The CT scan technicians were unprofessional and sarcastic, giving rude looks, exhibiting a lack of courtesy and respect. Furthermore, four male nurses or staff members stationed at the entrance to the registration area engaged in inappropriate behavior, cursing and acting in a manner that belied their professional roles. Many of the nurses walked the hallways with egregious attitudes. NEver seen four of the female nurses act this way, I really was asking myself. ..Why am I still here in this ER and not driving myself to Scripps La Jolla, or green hospital. I Simply asked one of the nurses where the nearest restroom was..she gave me a go to hell look and walked right past me, not even answering me. In contrast, my attending physician, Dr. Katherine Ross M.D., was exceptionally pleasant and attentive. I had no complaints about her bedside manner. I am scheduled to undergo surgery at this hospital in the near future, but I have decided to cancel the appointment. I intend to seek care at a safer hospital where I feel secure and where professional medical staff conduct themselves with professionalism and respect. I will thoroughly review my medical bill with my insurance provider to ensure that I am not overcharged. While I appreciate my surgeon's expertise, I will not undergo surgery in an environment that induces fear and discomfort. I strongly advise individuals considering this hospital to exercise caution and explore alternative options. I have great insurance. I am not going to be paying to be treated like a piece of Garbage, to be scared and frightened in a ER. UCSD Hospital, Scripps Lajolla, and Scripps Green are all safer alternatives. Only.
