We purchased some cheeses, crackers, yogurts, falafel wraps, and miscellaneous snacks. I was hoping to get some baked goods as well but everything looked dry and stale. The prices were higher then we would pay elsewhere but that is to be expected. What wasn't expected was the flavor and quality of the items we purchased. We were very disappointed. It is important to support local but the payoff for the higher prices is typically higher quality and better service and unfortunately that was not our experience here.

The prices are great, much lower than Freddy's or Safeway. They have a great bulk section, the only bulk section I've found in the area. Spices, candy, pasta, flours, and more can be found in their bulk section. They don't take credit cards and you have to bag your own groceries, so keep that in mind. This is considered the "poor" grocery store. But I'm not poor, and I like to shop here. Yes, you might end up behind someone in line with two carts full of groceries, and paying with a combination of cash, check, and EBT, but the savings are awesome and the checkout process is relatively quick regardless. I love Winco and if you don't you might be a snob. Bonus fact: "Winco" is an acronym for "Washington, Idaho, Northern California, Oregon." Bonus-bonus fact: last time I checked, their sister store is Metropolitan Market, a North Sound area "fancy" store.

For me, there is no other brie. One time I was at the Cheese Board Collective in Berkeley to find a blue cheese from Asturias when I saw the Brillat Savarin and insisted my mom get it for a party. She asked why the big deal and I said that it's the closest thing a cheese can get to butter. The cheesemonger standing in front of us looked up from his cheese sorting, looked us with crazy eyes and whispered, "No. It IS butter." He then stopped what he was doing to spread out a runny dab for her on a cracker and my mom saw the light. We were so excited about finally finding this cheese when other people heard my sister singing its' praises and they wanted it. There was only one wedge left, so my sister gracefully let another man have it. I mean, how else do you spread the gospel and make converts until other people have had their own spiritual experience. So we'll be back again with the hope that they restock.

I asked somebody once if they worked there because I needed help and the response was "what do you think?". She's now a manager. It's a store full of miserable old housewives who need something to do so they are now cashiers, and young to middle aged men who are scared of the world and think this job security. It's just another grocery store pretending to be down to earth but is full of assholes.

I was homeless in Olympia Washington during the month of April 2013 on April 11, 2013, I had discovered an abandoned shopping cart near a dumpster outside that was full of garbage. I emptied the garbage out and used the cart to push my things around in for a few days. The cart had no name or logo, so I thought it was just one of the several several, carts I have seen just sitting around during my past two years of homelessness. Apparently the cart belonged to a Bayview Thriftway in Olympia Washington. I found this out the day of April 14, 2013, when I pushed the cart down to Bayview Thriftway, because I noticed the store, and I wanted to get something to eat for Breakfast. So I parked the cart outside the store at the bicycle rack to the west side of the main entrance, because I thought it would be rude to push this tiny little shopping cart full of my gear, including my sleeping gear, through the grocery store. I walked into the grocery store, and grabbed some cereal, almond milk, and two packages of Candy that were Products of Mexico. Being that I had no dishes, I walked over to the deli department and asked the lady if she would give me a plastic container and spoon to eat my cereal from. She obliged kindly. I paid for my items at the deli department counter which was located toward the rear of the store. When the lady cashier asked if I wanted a receipt or a bag, I told her that it wasn't necessary. I then Proceeded to exit the store. So I walked through the store, and as I was nearly breezing out the main entrance, I was accosted by a produce clerk...when he yelled at me to see my receipt. I explained the situation noticing that he was concerned because I was carrying items out without a bag...that would be pretty stupid to just carry armfuls of groceries right out the front door if I hadn't paid for them. He also yelled at me that he was going to call the police. So I whipped around and told him that together he and I would go find his manager and the person who I purchased the groceries from to Confirm that I had in fact made the purchase. As I was Calling the Manager, The Clerk who sold the Groceries to me confirmed for a fact that I had made the purchase. When the manager arrived I had him also confirm with the clerk who sold the groceries to me...so there was One Hundred Percent total confirmation that I had made the purchase and didn't steal anything. Right before I left in a heated discussion I conveyed the message to the manager how irritated I was at being accused yet again of stealing from a stupid little grocery store. After I had become homeless, I had to endure a lot of false accusations. So I flew out of the store, grabbed the cart, and marched away to go cool off and find a serene place to eat my breakfast. Within about five minutes I was tapped on the should and was told that I had just stolen something from Bayview thriftway. I was extremely violently arrested for alleged theft. I thought" Those bastards....how dare the do this to me." I had no idea I was being arrested for a shopping cart I had discovered three days earlier...I had no idea it belonged to Bayview thriftway, the cart didn't have a company name scribed anywhere on its surface. I spent twenty six days in jail I Olympia and chehalis Washington from April 14, 2013 through may 10, 2013 and I now have a misdemeanor on my record and had to pay $283.00 in fines. I plead guilty (UNDER EXTREME DURESS) TO "possession of stolen property" and resisting arrest. The employees of Bayview Thriftway, I loathe, and I loathe their company. read more

Thriftway likes to emphasize that it's an independent, family-owned business, but don't be fooled. They treat their employees the same way a big corporate grocery store would; meaning they offer the bare minimum required by law and they clearly don't trust their workers. This creates a hostile work environment and anyone who's worked for a genuine family-owned company knows that when your employer treats you with respect and trust, you're less likely to want to scam the jerks. Sadly, that is not the case at Thriftway. They don't even offer an employee discount and any food that is taken off the shelves (due to it being expired or bruised or just at the end of the night when hot food is thrown out) is put immediately in the trash. Don't you dare try to take any of the wasted food home! The amount of food that gets thrown out here is just sad. And yet the employees (most of whom can't even afford to shop at Thriftway) would get in serious trouble for taking any of it home. Speaking of expired food, this place is full of it! And while employees are instructed to check expiration dates, this rarely actually happens and I got the impression that this is the way the management preferred things. Yes, the food is overpriced here and on top of that, they WANT YOU to buy expired food because they barely break even. Throwing away expired food is like throwing away money at Thriftway, and done begrudgingly. Their prepared deli salads are almost exclusively premade (and dumped out of giant tubs or bags); the only thing they make on the premises are the quiches and sandwiches. I would STRONGLY advise against ordering the burgers here. The beef patties they use are so cheap, they are probably lower quality than dog food. On a $10 burger, they probably make about $9.70 in profit. I wouldn't be surprised if there was horse meat in those patties. If you're looking for a good independent grocery store to support in Olympia, I highly recommend the Co-op! You can tell that the workers there are treated well by their good humor. If you're not too concerned with that, go to Safeway, where the prices are much better. Or Trader Joe's. Thriftway is owned by a greedy, distrustful and manipulative family that will do whatever it takes in order to make a buck, at the expense of both its employees and its customers. read more

calling the POLICE on a breastfeeding mother because of other uncomfortable customers complaints?? Shame on Bayview Thriftway! I live near downtown and so was a regular here. I wont be anymore! FYII, Bayview, here is the LAW on breastfeeding in Washington state. You shold probaly learn it Washington Wash. Rev. Code § 9A.88.010 (2001) states that the act of breastfeeding or expressing breast milk is not indecent exposure. (HB 1590) Wash. Rev. Code § 43.70.640 (2001) allows any employer, governmental and private, to use the designation of "infant-friendly" on its promotional materials if the employer follows certain requirements. (2001 Wash. Laws, Chap. 88) Wash. Rev. Code § 49.60.30(g) provides that it is the right of a mother to breastfeed her child in any place of public resort, accommodations, assemblage or amusement. (2009 Wash. Laws, Chap. 164, HB 1596) Wash. Rev. Code § 49.60.215 states that it is an unfair practice for any person to discriminate against a mother breastfeeding her child in any place of public resort, accommodations, assemblage or amusement. You have to check your backpack to shop in the store as they assume you must be a thief. That and the highest prices in the city are why I stopped shopping there. I also learned that the wealthy family who own it are right wing anti-women's rights extremists who sued the state to allow pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for morning after pills. After doing what they can to force birth on women who can't afford to raise a baby, being good Republican "Christians" they will, of course, oppose all efforts by the state to help you feed, clothe, house and educate the child. After hearing that this grocer forced a breast feeding mom with a service dog out and called the cops on her I feel that they should be held accountable. Don't shop here! If they can't abide by Washington state law then they should not be in business. What happened was discrimination and not right. Boobs are not se toys they are for feeding babies and it's natural! She even called me later to tell me the driver has the groceries in the car and on the way. Once they arrived I opened the door to a small plant and a sweet handwritten note apologizing from drive up and go. It made my day! I didn't get the girls name but I had to rush to make a review so that her kindness, and costumer service is appreciated

The grocery story is dark and dingy, but with a pretty nice supply of misc. things and a decent beer selection. The deli was cooking up a storm as I popped by, and it was evidenced by the overwhelming smell of the deep fryer. A further look and you could see why... there was very little ventilation other than over the grill. Foodwise, they have two focuses - burgers and teriyaki. I tried the burger. The South Bay burger comes with standard toppings, a toasted bun, two slices of cheese, some grilled mushrooms, and ham. The burger patty (small, unseasoned, and some combo of overcooked and pre-frozen) was almost completely unnoticeable in this sandwich, a good thing in this case. The slice of ham was real thick and was the flavor that dominated the burger. The cheese was layered on double thick, one yellow and one white, and was perfectly gooey and processed tasty. If you're in the area, it's probably the best option... but no reason to seek it out otherwise.

It made me feel weird and invalid when I went in there. (Exception: the son and grandmother who work there are awesome and nice.) #2 Reason: Later hours. They're open 'til 11 on weekdays; Don's only open 'til 10. #3 Reason: Cheaper pizza. I love pizza. Puget Pantry has Tony's pizza for $5; Don's cheapest pizza is $8. #4 Reason: They do cash back! They have small packs of antipasto to go in case you want to have a small picnic on your drive. They serve their hot food on slabs of granite charcuterie boards which shoes that they're trying hard. The cake case has cool cakes you wouldn't expect, including a single slice of mango cake that must have weighed a couple of pounds. They serve their pre-made cold sandwiches on ciabatta or large biscuits. They sold tins of tea in cylinders with windows on them so you could see the mix of tea ingredients. Plus they had some cool stickers on sale on a rack and that's my jam. What a cool, curated inventory. Who is the buyer here? Because Bravo!! I will be back because this place isn't just a fun place to grab a snack- it should be a local foodie destination.

And it's not really super cheap. But that's not what most people expect of a rural convenience store.
