We stopped here because this is a local, non profit co-op and we wanted to support them. The store is small and smells exactly as you would expect it to. Some cleaning would go a long way. We purchased some cheeses, crackers, yogurts, falafel wraps, and miscellaneous snacks. I was hoping to get some baked goods as well but everything looked dry and stale. The prices were higher then we would pay elsewhere but that is to be expected. What wasn't expected was the flavor and quality of the items we purchased. We were very disappointed. It is important to support local but the payoff for the higher prices is typically higher quality and better service and unfortunately that was not our experience here. read more

I love this place! I've been going since I was little. My mom used to take me to the Westside Olympia location, but nowadays I like this location much better. (The photo is of my daughter at the Pacific Ave location BTW) My go-to's are: fresh veggies, frozen veggies, meat, pre-made sandwiches, ice cream, soup, hot sauce, seasoning, condiments, supplements and soap. The only downside is I can't afford to buy everything I need from here. But when I do go, everything I get is amazing and grown with higher standards than most grocery stores. When I first moved to the Olympia area a year ago, I was disappointed that there was no Whole Foods around because I love scouring their aisles and finding the weird little healthy snacks that line their shelves. Cut to a year later and I'm still a newbie but I now know that we don't need no stinking Whole Paycheck" here because we have places like Thriftway, Haagen, and Olympia Food Co-op. As small as the Co-op stores are, they're much less intimidating. I can freeze up sometimes with ALL the variety and choices in each food category at a WF, but because they have a smaller footprint, the Co-op is much more discerning about what they carry, so it can be a foodie paradise. I picked up a kouign Amman and chocolate chip cookie and they get a thumbs up from me. Most surprisingly, they carry La Fermière French yogurt, my bougie pleasure that I discovered at a French warehouse distributor eons ago which is just now emerging in the past few years here in the States. A must if you want to get the next colorful seasonal pots which can be hard sometimes since they sell out at the Fred Meyers across the way. read more

This place has more of everything which is surprising because it's crammed into such a small space. Even so, without fail, I find at least a few items on sale at a terrific price. Gluten free pasta? They've got it! Amaranth? Yup. Local Kombucha? They've got a whole section of booch to choose from! Hot soup and sandwiches? More of everything, including a vast array of granola bars and trail mix, I won't even mention the aisles of healthy snacks! I come here often and today was a completely different awful experience. The older lady with the purple braids was so rude to me I said hello when checking out out my basket up on counter she didn't even acknowledge me just goes "I need all of that out" I said okay no problem and got all the stuff out of basket onto belt (as I intended but thought acknowledging the other person in front of me was kind of important) anyways then after she is ringing me up I ask if there are any boxes she says "they're outside you can go when I'm done" after ringing up and paying I tell her I will get a box and be back. I love visiting natural/health-focused stores when I visit other towns. The Oly co-ops are no exception! This one is conveniently also located just off I-5 freeway for ease of pit stop fixin's. At first, I totally drove past it but that kind of helps lend itself a rather peaceful setting being setback and slightly above the street with shrubbery. I enjoy seeing the bounty of organic (aka the real NATURAL) produce (all the veggies, starches, grains, fruits, etc), eco-friendly toiletries, household goods and packaged stuffs. Wonderful co-op full of all of the good stuff, regardless of what diets you choose to follow and wholesome products. Just remember that you should never follow a diet just because it's plastered on the cover of a magazine; always give it due reading and research before you commit. Unfortunately I don't drive a prius with a Hilary or rainbow sticker like everyone else, but I can still appreciate this place. I remember composting when I was I kid and am glad this place does it too. I also like that they offer natural and organic products not found at most drug and grocery stores for eczema prone people like me. Customer service is always familiar and warm here, its a small location. They're exceedingly LGBT and hippie friendly. I only come here for the delicious 8 Arms Bakery snack bars! I don't know how either the Eastside or Westside co-op in Oly could possibly get a bad review. I have been a member since 1985 and am more satisfied with these stores than ever. The label "organic" you find across town in various grocery stores from Winco to Fred Meyer does not guarantee purity, but at the Oly co-ops the buyers very carefully source their goods and, by and large, most dry goods are not rancid but rather fresh, the produce comes from responsible growers (many local) there is a fascinating variety of products, and 95% of the time customer service is responsive, courteous and quite professional. If you have an issue then you need to raise your gripe in a much more constructive manner to the Co-op staff, and after that if your critique still falls on deaf ears, then at that point go ahead and write your nasty Yelp review. Out of all the Co-Ops I have been to in Washington...I think I like this one the best! It reminds me of a non snooty version of my fav one in Portland...minus all that Vtopia cheeze (sad face). If they have Vtopia I might have overlooked it. Anywho. Why do I like this location? Best it has exactly what you need plus about $5.8M in shit that you think you need. Like allll the stuffs. You need it, just buy it. From bulk items, special misos, special vegan cream cheeze, fresh artisan bread, veggies, oils, beauty, hygiene, special condiments, etc etc. Dried veggie mix soup in bulk. Like as in you add fresh clean water and simmer. What an amazing thing. Seems logical right? Well they have it. Service is nice. Everyone is nice. Parking is ok. The Westside is kinda homey and you see neighbors visiting in or out of the store. So much is offered in the little place. Eastside is bigger with greater selection. Both carry local organic produce. It's not all healthy - I walk out with a huge ginger cookie sometimes... The bulk items are great because we can take our own containers and not add to the landfill. I'm new to the area and was in search of a place to buy fresh eggs. Found it and so much more! Including pizza from a brew pub that was quite tasty. They have a huge selection of bulk foods to drool over, especially the dried mangoes. All of the "employees" were very friendly and helpful. They even recycle egg cartons which is huge as I have not experienced this before. And fabulous fresh bakery products from a number of local bakeries in the south sound area. I love the Olympia Food Coop. There's one on the Eastside and one on the Westside. They both have awesome produce and products which support our healthy lifestyle. I almost always run into someone I know, and if not, sometimes I make a new friend. The Coop is very local and a beautiful place to shop for bulk items, dairy-free, gluten-free and lots of other yummy foods. The Westside Food Coop has a huge bulletin board and great little garden shop too. If you're in Olympia, definitely make the Coop one of your stops. I'm not super-happy with their selection, but I get that a small store has to stock what people want. I think the salad bar is a waste of space - I'd much rather see a better selection of fresh refrigerated items, like garlic sauce or other sauces, desserts, etc. Also, their selection of bulk herbs is poor. Also, it seems like their staff is rather uneducated, for a co-op, which offers out-of-the-mainstream foods. I wanted to buy cranberry concentrate, and the two people I talked to didn't know if they were out of stock, or didn't carry it. I finally found someone who I forced to go look on the shelf, and he said they did not carry it. I don't think their organic brown rice is organic, because it is a uniform brown color, and Lundberg's organic rice always has lots of green and greenish colored hulls - that's part of how they get organic rice - they harvest early, before the weeds set it. They were uninterested in finding out why they weren't getting Fairhaven Whole Wheat Pastry flour. I can understand their not carrying it because the distributor shorted them, but they should at least have called to find out what 's going on, and when it will be back in stock! I get the feeling they are more intersted in being cool, and following the latest fads, and not so interested in taking their responsibility as a neighborhood food source seriously. read more

I call food coop to see if I could shop there without being a member and they said yes you can shop there as long as it's not over $10 and so I get up there with probably a 20 some dollar order and then the cashier tells me she has to give me a 10% charge on my order and I said well I called up here and the lady said that I can shop there as long as I don't go over $10 and she says but you went over $10 and I said but that's not what you just told me you told me I could shop there once a month with a 10%. I'm getting two different answers. I left my stuff at the counter and I said well I guess I'll have to go shop downtown. "what would God think about putting a 10% on the food that he created"? Just goes to show you how cruel the world is. The lady at the computer counter that I asked to do a research for me she was so rude she just pointed right in front of my face trying to help another customer and then when I asked her if she look up something for me she wasn't even able to search a Google she come up with some out all kinds of weird stuff a Yogi tea bag when I was looking for bulk tea. I think we need to start looking into New Management of this place and stop hitting non members with a 10% charge. They just lost a cell and you know that I'm already paying more than what the foods worth because they're able to sell it as a 10% discount to disabled people and people that don't have a lot of money. Completely agree with Connie H's review. I live in Portland but am stuck up at Fort Lewis for a couple weeks. I ventured down to Olympia because I love shopping at co-ops and this place was rated better than the co-op in Tacoma. The place is a decent size which is the only nice thing I can say. There seems to be somewhat of a selection of locally produced items but there are also a lot of items that are at the commissary (!!!) so that was a bit disappointing. The produce also didn't look great so I avoided buying any. Every employee I saw completely ignored every customer around and kept their eyes on whatever it was they happened to be doing. The icing on the cake was the downright nasty look on the cashier's face the whole time he was checking me out. He was just so sullen and unfriendly and seemed to be actually making an effort not speak one single word. Most expensive co-op I have shopped at with the most uncomfortable atmosphere. Very negative impression, won't be back. read more

I was kind of disappointed in this Co-op store. It seemed to not have as much variety at least in my mind as it's equivalents in nearby towns yet it is very, very busy here. Parking in their lot was a near failure due to congestion and weekend shoppers. I did get lucky and park in their lot though. When I didn't really see much that I wanted I was just ready to leave. However I did find some delicious Veggie Chips that I have had in the past and decided to get those. As to be expected the cash register lanes had considerable lines and a staff member opened an additional register. People flocked to him like droves of fruit flies to freshly sliced fruit however he did notice that I was the first to leave the line when he said " Who is next". I thank you for that! I get Co-ops are often in places where other grocery markets were before. Often times they are not in new spaces, sometimes they are. I wasn't expecting a Whole Foods experience in a fresh, new store but I wasn't counting on being so claustrophobic during the whole time either. read more

Pretty great place. Prices are as you would expect for a natural foods store, because apparently buying natural foods is more expensive than putting all kinds of weird things into food. The produce is beautiful though! Prices on bulk items are pretty amazing. I have friend who have signed up for the low income discount, which is really awesome because you get 10% off with the card, and you don't have pay for the membership if you are unemployed/underemployed. They are really into ethical practices and that's so awesome. Though, I have encountered some judgmental people who work/volunteer there. The holier than thou attitude is probably expected but unwelcome. We are all doing the best we can, being rude about people not meeting your standards is not helpful. read more

I love this Co-Op! When I shopped here for the first time I absolutely disliked it! I disliked it because it was small, expensive, because it was cramped, because it was weird and because they charged me for not being a member! I found at that time PCC, Whole Foods and Marlene's Market were so much better! But then, I needed organic whole foods, so I started shopping there, I became a member and I absolutely LOVE it! Being an accountant I did price comparison and their fruits and vegetables are cheaper than at the farmers market. They are selling a lot of local produce which I truly appreciate! When it comes to raw whole foods I prefer to shop here over any big whole foods market because it is LOCAL, because it comes from places around. Are there things they could have done better? ABSOLUTELY! I am not entirely impressed with their dried produce section. Sometimes produce is not all that great. But in general I love it and am really grateful we have it here in Lacey! I do not shop there for everything. It is quite rare when you can find everything in one spot. But between that place and farmer's market (which is by the way more expensive) I am very satisfied! When it comes to meats I go to Stuart's and order in bulk there or go directly to the farmer. Yes sometimes I encountered rude people there, but there are rude people everywhere. I also encountered some really nice ones there! And one last thing. I absolutely ADMIRE their support for Palestine and condemning Israeli crimes! It is sad that everyone who doesn't support Israel's take over Palestinian territories is automatically labeled "anti-Semitic". Please try to do more research and look at that from more objective perspective. read more

I only grow to love the coop more and more each year! If you want fresh, organic, healthy food this is the place to go! They also make efforts to buy locally. They have lots of things like gluten free brownie mixes, locally baked bread, and decadent amazing ice creams, but I go for the organic produce and the killer bulk section with all kinds of spices and dried fruit and nuts and all kinds of foods. If you shop smart, it isn't that much more expensive, and certainly beats spending money on doctors for illness. The place is run by some staff but also a lot of volunteers. I have never had anybody here be rude to me, but if you treat them like they ought to serve you, I would not be surprised if you got a rude reaction. I love coming here for local produce and the buckets o' cheese still in brine, and olives. Staff is always friendly, a little pushy about updating co-op cards, but I suppose they have to be. My only complaint are the children running loose in the store. THEY'RE ANIMALS. I've been ran into at full speed, hit in the ankle or back of my leg with a child pushing a cart unsupervised. Watched children knock over cans/items bumping into shelves. Worst of all, I have seen the dirtiest little rascals I've ever seen eating straight from the peanut paste containers. Licking fingers, and going in for seconds, thirds, fourths. If you come here with your children please be vigilant about supervising them. Otherwise, thank you for existing Olympia co-op. read more

I typically go to the East-side but enjoy both locations. Produce and local items (meat, dairy, bakery, prepaid goods) are all so fresh and beautiful. The supplement section has a vast selection. We love the bulk section, chocolate/protein bar wall, and the specialty foods that are kept in stock. This store even has a gardening supplies, local decor, and fresh flowers (when in season). The best way to get a deal is to be a member and then if you can be a working volunteer member. The staff are all so friendly, and so much thought is placed into every corner of the store. They even have mini carts for your little one to shop if you feel up for the challenge. Last thing I'll say before wrapping this up- the east side "salad" bar has an amazing selection of ready-made food every day and there always seems to be something for every diet: vegan, gluten free, dairy free, paleo, nightshade free, soy free, etc. also if you forget your bags, you can load up recycled boxes Costco style to take home. In short: if you approach eating with a seasonal, local, sustainable approach- this is the place for you! read more

Gotta love the co-op! I love both of them, but especially the east side co op. it's bigger, more spacious, more of a selection, and had more staff/help at hand. I pretty much do all my grocery shopping at either one of them. Everything they sell is as local and organic as it comes. They have a wide selection of food, pretty much anything you can think of. The bulk food and spices are 1 of my favorite parts because you can buy as much or as little as you'd like. Have a Radom recipe calling for 1tbs of a random expensive ingredient you will probably never use again? You can buy 1 tbs of it here! They also have a fresh salad bar with many different delicious salads and soups. Here are some tips I wish I had when I fist started shopping at the co op: -Right when you walk in grab a board, paper, and pencil. Most of the time you will have to write down the number of what you're buying. -There is a section in the back of free containers people donate for you to use! So you don't have to use more of the plastic bags. You can use these for bulk foods you're buying or maybe bulk shampoo/soaps you're buying. -When you do use your own container/one someone has donated make sure you get the Tera weight.. There is a scale for you to use by the bulk foods. Wrote down that weight first when it is empty, then put in whatever you want and write down the number for what that is. (That way you aren't charged for the container as well.) -Any purchase over $10 gets a fee if you don't have a co op card/membership. These are very reasonably priced and have many options to choose from. I try to recommend the co op to a lot of people but unfortunately I hear a lot of the time that they are intimidated or "wouldn't fit it in" and this makes me very sad. Most of the time the staff is very friendly and helpful but yes there are the few that like to stick their nose up, but just look past them and there should be someone to help :) the co op is very different but in a awesome, environmentally friendly way! And people come here from all walks of life! It takes some getting accustomed to but once you do, I promise you will be glad you made the transition!! I became a member because I appreciate a place that supports local farmers and sells their produce and products. But every time after shopping there I am totally unnerved! The parking lot is small and the store is tiny. I'm all for leisurely shopping but it takes me forever to shop for a few items because everybody is in everybody's way. I would like to know if there is a relocation into a bigger building with better parking in the future. I am actually considering buying at Winco, where they have tons of bulk items and organic foods instead of battling my way through this labyrinth of a store. read more

In addition, they take a lot of care in stocking items from producers that provide fair wages and socially just working conditions. People from all walks of life shop at the co-op. I moved to Olympia, not knowing many people, and found the co-op to be a very welcoming, quirky space with a great selection. It's a worker collective, one of the only of it's size in the United States, and the staff is deeply in-tune with the needs of the greater Olympia community. Besides offering traditional grocery services, the co-op also hosts a variety of cooking, fermenting, and gardening workshops. Members have the option of working volunteer hours to earn monthly discounts and all customers play a role in shaping the future of the co-op. OFC is a miricle that I'd like to see all over the place... The fact that they use so many local sources for produce and baked goods is rad. Their deli could be expanded, but the food is always good and fresh... and the cheapest ORGANIC salad bar in town... Excellent soups. OFC has a volunteer program that is so valuable... I mean where can you go into a food store, take a few trainings and start helping your community and help yourself? I was a working member cashier for almost 3 years.. it helped me financially. It also allowed me to meet many different people and learn a lot more about different kinds of food I'd never eaten. I had many valuable experiences interacting w/ customers (Members and non) and staff... the staff..... AWESOME.... sometimes a little rude, but they are dealing w/ a lot all at once...
