This year's La Fermière Valentine's Day pot is pink and you can find it here.

When I first moved to the Olympia area a year ago, I was disappointed that there was no Whole Foods around because I love scouring their aisles and finding the weird little healthy snacks that line their shelves. Cut to a year later and I'm still a newbie but I now know that we don't need no stinking Whole Paycheck" here because we have places like Thriftway, Haagen, and Olympia Food Co-op. As small as the Co-op stores are, they're much less intimidating. I can freeze up sometimes with ALL the variety and choices in each food category at a WF, but because they have a smaller footprint, the Co-op is much more discerning about what they carry, so it can be a foodie paradise. I picked up a kouign Amman and chocolate chip cookie and they get a thumbs up from me. Most surprisingly, they carry La Fermière French yogurt, my bougie pleasure that I discovered at a French warehouse distributor eons ago which is just now emerging in the past few years here in the States. A must if you want to get the next colorful seasonal pots which can be hard sometimes since they sell out at the Fred Meyers across the way.

Unfortunately I don't drive a prius with a Hilary or rainbow sticker like everyone else, but I can still appreciate this place. I remember composting when I was I kid and am glad this place does it too. I also like that they offer natural and organic products not found at most drug and grocery stores for eczema prone people like me. Customer service is always familiar and warm here, its a small location. They're exceedingly LGBT and hippie friendly. I only come here for the delicious 8 Arms Bakery snack bars! My favorite is the rare "I Love Coconut" bar.

Out of all the Co-Ops I have been to in Washington...I think I like this one the best! It reminds me of a non snooty version of my fav one in Portland...minus all that Vtopia cheeze (sad face). If they have Vtopia I might have overlooked it. Anywho. Why do I like this location? Best it has exactly what you need plus about $5.8M in shit that you think you need. Like allll the stuffs. You need it, just buy it. From bulk items, special misos, special vegan cream cheeze, fresh artisan bread, veggies, oils, beauty, hygiene, special condiments, etc etc. Dried veggie mix soup in bulk. Like as in you add fresh clean water and simmer. What an amazing thing. Seems logical right? Well they have it. Service is nice. Everyone is nice. Parking is ok. Everything is happy clouds and green trees. If I lived there I would be a member. Could I live there? Possibly.

Tulsi Rose tea is my all-time fav!

I love the Olympia Food Coop. There's one on the Eastside and one on the Westside. They both have awesome produce and products which support our healthy lifestyle. I almost always run into someone I know, and if not, sometimes I make a new friend. The Coop is very local and a beautiful place to shop for bulk items, dairy-free, gluten-free and lots of other yummy foods. The Westside Food Coop has a huge bulletin board and great little garden shop too. If you're in Olympia, definitely make the Coop one of your stops. Everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable.

I haven't had health insurance since I was in high school, so when I am so sick with the flu that I am inadvertently crop dusting my section and throwing up behind the bar, I count on these little Mom and Pop places. It's not as effective as riding the trolley into Tijuana, but it's what I got and it works. I first went to Good Life a few years ago when I had a severe throat infection. The man that works there is extremely knowledgeable. He practically diagnosed me within minutes of conversation and gave me several options or routes I could take, based on how involved I wanted to be with treatment and how much I wanted to spend. I went there today and the experience was enlightening. It was the same guy, and he was very certain about what could be wrong with me. He gave me some options and commended me on my initial battle plan to attack my bout with bubble guts (I think I ate some undercooked sausage). He seems very sincere about everyone's health, all you gotta do is walk in. On a quick note, it is from my understanding that if someone is not a MD, they cannot "diagnose" "treat" or "prescribe" anything, which is why you will get "suggestions" So if this doesn't sound good to you, I suggest spending your day (and money) being climbed on by a family of 8 in the waiting room at the walk-clinic.

However, I feel that the Pacific Avenue location's crowdedness makes it a little more fun to discover all the little culinary surprises the store has hidden away. What this location has in favor of it was one little wedge of cheese that we've been looking for forever since we moved to Washington State- a wedge of Brillat Savarin. For me, there is no other brie. One time I was at the Cheese Board Collective in Berkeley to find a blue cheese from Asturias when I saw the Brillat Savarin and insisted my mom get it for a party. She asked why the big deal and I said that it's the closest thing a cheese can get to butter. The cheesemonger standing in front of us looked up from his cheese sorting, looked us with crazy eyes and whispered, "No. It IS butter." He then stopped what he was doing to spread out a runny dab for her on a cracker and my mom saw the light. We were so excited about finally finding this cheese when other people heard my sister singing its' praises and they wanted it. There was only one wedge left, so my sister gracefully let another man have it. I mean, how else do you spread the gospel and make converts until other people have had their own spiritual experience. So we'll be back again with the hope that they restock.

It's much more a deli than a grocery store- not a dig, just the truth. I arrived around 1pm and they had a steady stream of people ordering smoothies and deli items. They have a fun mix of locally made crafts, some organic food items and some weird art. Truly an original mix! But the most important things - the place was clean. The bathroom was clean. The employees were clean and exceptionally friendly and attentive. And most importantly - the food was soooo good!! I had the veggie wrap grilled (because I'm in an endless search for good vegetarian food to eat on the go) and omg was it good. As of this year, I've made it a staple spot for my vegan and vegetarian options. On my most recent trip, I connected with their deli and hot bar, which is small but not lacking in options. The salad bar has a very well-seasoned balsamic tofu, which is my favorite. I've also purchased some of their Seitan options in the frozen food area that's decent. Overall, I truly love this place.
