Hello my little yelplings! I'm not sure if I'm just lucky today after my past week of weird…read morecircumstances, but I actually landed excellent barbecue, in back-to-back visits of barbecue joints! For those of you who don't read my reviews, only about one in five barbecue joints I go to make the cut. The last one that didn't make the cut, was that fast food place Smokin Ds in St Augustine Florida. Anyhow, let's get to Big J's. I'm parked across the street, which I park at semi often, and throughout the years, and have only been next door at the vape shop in the strip mall. I think the other times I've came by they were closed, but they weren't closed today and I kind of expected them to be. I wanted to have supper here last night, but I had to go endure tragedy at the Mexican restaurant in the same row. I noticed they were open today, so I mosied it over about 1:00 p.m. The place is really clean, it's a family run outfit, and they are ALL SO nice. So I wanted a brisket plate, but the nice young gentleman behind the counter told me that it wasn't ready and it would be ready in an hour, so I came back at 2:00 p.m.. I ordered brisket, collards and green beans. Again if you don't follow me, you don't know my culinary history and that on the smoke pit, but this place was just about as good as my own. My collards were fabulous, green beans were off the chain, my brisket was hot, tender and moist. So good! They went above and beyond, the young gentleman at the counter asked me if I was a truck driver after placing my order, which I am an O/O, and I got something free or got a discount, not too sure what it was but I got something! That means a lot, we spend weeks and months away from our families to bring ungrateful people the things they want, so it's a little gestures like that that really makes a difference to us. Well they definitely have a lifetime customer. I just have to make sure when I pull here that they're open. But I'll definitely be back! ***DISCLAIMER*** This pure, uncut, honest review is federally protected under Federal Law by way of Bill #EO14149. From the outside to the inside, it is a fairly classic countryside establishment that has a homey feel to it and a welcoming, yet confusing to outsiders atmosphere. All the classics are here: pulled pork, baked beans, fried okra, potato salad. Walking in, the couple resident guests who likely consider themselves part owners give the stare down, in the same fashion that they do for their cat when it drags in a rattlesnake into the house. Asking if the sauce comes on top or side of the pulled park, the waitress pleasantly informs that the chef does either depending on the day, thus going back to check what kind of mood they are in today. Yeah, it's that kind of a joint and there is nothing wrong with it. It is a different world than the city that's a mere half hour away. As far as the meal, the pulled pork is all-right. A bit dry, not particularly fresh, but standard mass produced pork. The okra is excellent. The potato salad is very vinegar centric, to a degree that made it a bit hard to actually finish, but could be of flavor for some. With all of that said, Jones BBQ is still a much better option than the fast food options in town and worth a stopover if passing through Temple. It's a simple place, with homey food and represents the place where it is.

We happened upon this little gem while checking out the Iced and Topped Bakery Shoppe in the same strip mall. Hubby and I had already eaten lunch; however, were interested in coming back so we walked over to check out his hours. Mr. Kelley graciously answered all of our questions and let us try his brisket, BBQ ribs and alligator sausage. These were on par with the best smoked meats we've had anywhere in the United States. You would usually only expect to find smoked meats this good at a few places in the Atlanta area and in Texas. The meats were tasty and tender with a great smoke flavor being present in a big way, something you don't find at most BBQ places these days. In addition to the aforementioned meats, he smokes rabbit, chicken, etc. The game meats he smokes varies occasionally depending upon what he has available to smoke. Mr. Kelley's BBQ Food Truck can be found in the mall most days, unless he is servicing a catering event (Wedding/Birthday/Business/Celebration.) BRING CASH as he doesn't have the means to facilitate paying with credit cards with inflation rampant these days. This is a "To-Go" setup. It's such a great location as you can get phenomenal smoked BBQ and delicious dessert next door all in one quick stop (along with a hair cut, if desired).

I will admit, I parked on the wrong side of the patio. There was a door that appeared to be an entrance. I saw no Handicap Parking and thus parked there at the door as it was very convenient (we are 78 and 79 years old and have difficulty walking). We got out of the car and walked up to that door, and I attempted to open it, but it was locked. Thinking they were not open, I turned around to return to the car but then I heard someone attempting to unlock the door. I stopped and turned around, and the door opened and there were two people standing there. The female was somewhat smiling and said she was trying to unlock the door. The male said to come on in. I did ask the female jokingly, "been unlocking doors long (or something to that effect). I noticed on the door a sign stating, "emergency exit only". He said the main entrance is on the other side of the patio but to come on in there. I asked if I need to move my car and if we can exit at the same door and he replied, "leave the car and we can exit at the same door". I ordered a ribeye steak, medium well, but it arrived well done. I informed the server but went on and ate about half of it. The server brought me invoice which had a $6 discount on the $29.99 price of the steak which was a nice gesture. I paid with cash and he returned with a different invoice which shows the amount of change. I asked to see the original invoice as it shows a different amount. I failed to notice it shows the amount due if paying with a credit card. That seems to have upset someone and another person brought me that invoice. We then got up to leave and asked if we could leave through the door we entered and was told very emphatically, "NO". That is for "emergencies only". When I mentioned that I was told we could and tried to point out the person that told me that, about 4 people approached us and practically threw us out the front door. That caused us the walk out and around the patio area in the rain to get to our car. Needless to say, we were treated with disrespect and we were very embarrassed. If the overcooked steak had been the only issue, we likely would return. But when management and staff treat me like they did, I will NOT GO BACK. We will certainly tell friends and family the same.
