I'm sorry, but I didn't like the food. I wait d 45 minutes for Saffron rice that was over cooked and unseasoned. The beef ribs that I was told were seasonal were tender but still not very tasty. I won't even mention the cabbage because it was so overcooked and unseasoned that I couldn't bring myself to eat it. I attended a wedding rehearsal dinner at The Rockmart Slate House and these guys catered the event. The venue was amazing and the expectations for the food were high. They catered brisket, baked chicken, mac and cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls and cornbread. The brisket was taken quickly and was juicy, full of flavor and had very little fat. The baked chicken was outstanding and many thought it was better than the brisket (if that is possible). The mac and cheese was delicious. In fact, one guy has 2 full plates of it and was going back for thirds. The mashed potatoes had a wonderful flavor (I could have eaten those as an entire meal by themselves). The green beans were perfectly seasoned and were a big hit. I didn't try the rolls, but I did have 2 pieces of cornbread. It was so light that it crumbled when picked up with tongs. As with the rest of the food, it too was amazing. I didn't save room for dessert (banana pudding), but everyone was raving about it. Afterwards, I met the owners, who were very nice and were making sure everyone enjoyed the food. The expectations for catering are high and these guys certainly delivered! Came across restaurant and decided to try it out. Told about smoked half chicken being a special of the day. It was very good and tender. I ordered the beef ribs and a veggie plate also. The ribs were dry, tough and very salty. From my experience meant they were at least 2 days old. The mashed potatoes on the veggie plate had a sour taste...again old from previous day or maybe sat on steam table to long. The collard greens and yams were very good. The cornbread was burnt along the edges. The baked beans were also recommended which were not good at all. With the exception of the smoked chicken, collard and yams....I tossed out the remainder of my 54.00 order due to the fact it was not good at all and just could not eat another bite. read more

I got the turkey meat loaf, which was on the special's menu, with collard greens and green beans. All really good, and the collard greens were some of the best I have ever had. My gf and mom got the bbq chicken with mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, and sweet potato fries and they loved it. Banana pudding for dessert was fire! Stopped in at this little gem just off I-20 in Temple, GA, for lunch. Not much atmosphere here - this place is all about the food! Not the decor. I had meatloaf, mashed potatoes and greens with cornbread. All homemade and all delicious. Greens were seasoned well, mashed potatoes were thick with lots of color and flavor from the spices. The sides were what I would call normal portions but the meatloaf - oh my - it was a HUGE chunk of a serving. I tried my best to eat all of it but failed. Went here for lunch today with my best friend. It was a TOTAL win. The food was delicious and the price was very economical. I'm familiar with JT (chef and owner) because I've had his catered food before. When I heard he opened a spot, I knew I had to try it. Location: Right now Big J's is located inside of the Chevron station off of the Liberty Rd exit. Since it's a gas station the parking is ample and convenient. There are 2 small 2 top tables inside if you want to sit and eat (which we opted to do today). Food: The food was so good! There are usually 2-3 meat options and then about 3-4 sides from which you can choose. The mac n cheese looked so good though that we opted to double up on it. It was a warm, gooey, cheese dream! Very decadent and rich so we actually didn't finish it all in one sitting just because we didn't wanna fall asleep on the road from eating all of it If I heard him correctly I think there are more than 5 cheeses in it. MORE THAN 5. That's insane... But in a very yummy way. Today the meats were meatloaf, pulled chicken, and baked chicken. It was actually pretty hard to choose from but we went with the meatloaf and we were not disappointed. The serving size was pretty generous in my opinion (considering the price) and the meatloaf was packed full of flavor. I'm not sure what he does to it but something is different with the sauce/ketchup. Whatever it is, it's good. Again the meatloaf was flavorful and not dry (ugh I hate dry meatloaf). We also purchased a chicken thigh on the side which was good as well. I'm not sure of its seasoning (maybe some rosemary?) but it was a welcome delight to my palate in contrast to the normal baked chicken I cook at home. Ok confession... Our eyes were bigger than our bellies so we also ordered dessert annnnd he had biscuits left over from breakfast (don't judge us)...so we also got a chicken biscuit, sausage egg and cheese biscuit, banana pudding, AND sweet potato pie. I know.... ridiculous... But guess who's not cooking dinner tonight? ‍ We tasted everything and ate until we were a notch above comatose...u know, to be on the safe side. Chef JT makes his desserts and they are right on par with everything else. I particularly liked the banana pudding (which you can get with or without bananas....who knew ppl liked banana pudding but don't want the bananas ) Price: Super cheap for what you get. You purchase a meat and 2 sides, or a sandwich, or a slice of pie, OR A WHOLE PIE (whaaaaaa)...and u get more food than a Wendy's combo for less. (Sorry Wendy's, fresh beef or not you can't beat this). Runs you around $7 for a meal and you might even have leftovers! I'm digging it. Ok so... If you're looking for a nice, hot, homemade meal... Head over to this spot. I hear he has some signage coming soon but until then, just know he's inside of the Chevron. Oh and he also does catering on the side and I guarantee you won't find a better deal with the quality of food he serves. Love to find small local food joints when I'm traveling and I had to be in Tallapoosa GA. Tallapoosa isn't known for its fine dining so I expanded my search and found Big AJ's 20 minutes up the road in Temple GA. Any restaurant that says " Southern Home Cooking " catches my attention so i jumped in my jeep and gave it a try. And a good decision it was. A small hole in the wall location but fantastic food. I had the brisket which was tender, juicy and delicious. Homemade greens and awesome green beans complemented the meal. i just left this place about 30 minutes ago. i get home and no sweet potato pie. i guess that's my fault. didn't check my food before leaving. i ordered a veggie plate...collards...green beans...mac n cheese and rice with gravy. the collards was so salty i think it blew my palate out. the green beans were fine. the mac and cheese was...well let just say it's not what a black southern man is use to. the rice was in another container that i was assuming was the slice of pie but none the less my rice was saturated with gravy...like a scoop of rice with a cup of gravy. and like i said no pie in sight. maybe that pie would've made up for everything else. not to mention i got this to go and still tipped 15%. i'm not mad but more or less disappointed in what i just knew was going to be some really good food. smh....i lied i'm pissed! read more
