My artist Layla was extremely specific with the process and during the procedure (she cares & is very customer orientated). i must be honest its been years since i did the tanning bed dance and looking back my pale skin needed some sun but tanning salons are better , quicker and no sand. i went with a friend to beach bum tanning on steinway for the first time and i cant count how many times i drove by and wondered maybe its time to tan it up. place is well set up and besides the tanning beds that are state of the art compared to the ones i layed in back in the day or night , they do spray tanning which is not for me but to each his or her own. the staff are very friendly and answered any question i had before going in to get some color.the tanning beds are very clean and they do the job in 2 visits and i aint pale and stale for now. prices are reasonable and they dont try to sell you package deals or rush you during a session. will be back when my paleness gets too obvious.4 stars on my yelp meter read more

UPDATE: Genna and Gaby immediately contacted me to rectify this situation. I found their management of the situation to be top notch and truly reflects great overall management of the store. They apologized for what happened and reiterated that this isn't how the store is run and they never turn away customers. They extended my package and gave me a couple extra tans for my inconvenience. I truly appreciate both of you reaching out and helping to alleviate my frustration. You went above and beyond! I've been using this location on and off for several years. I've honestly never had an issue here until today. I've used several diff beds and I've also been airbrushed tan here. However tonight was really off putting. I went in at 551pm and they refused to let me tan. For the record I've come in around closing before (on SEVERAL occasions) and have never been turned away. Either lock the front door if you're not going to allow customers before closing or have a explicit sign up stating what time the last tan is. If you close at 6, I expect to be able to tan before 6 unless noted elsewhere. I don't know the name of the girl that refused me, I just know I've never seen her face in there before. Honestly disappointed in Beach Bum because I typically get great service in here and usually really like the girls but this was enough to really turn me off and write this. read more

I love this place. The staff is super friendly and very attentive to cleaning and sanitizing which I really appreciate during these times. They all wear masks and are diligently cleaning and disinfecting the store the entire time. They adhere to social distancing guidelines and enforce people keeping their distance while waiting for their tanning beds and I recommend this location if you're looking to tan in Astoria! Piss poor management and the beds are all Luke warm. Sitting and waiting for my bed to be cleaned while the "manager" with a horrific nose job is just standing behind the counter while the other employee facetimes. The bed wasnt cleaned properly and still had streak marks on the top glass. The lotions and products are marked up at over 100% actual retail value. They try and upsell you every time you go in. There is dust in ALL the cracks and crevices if you look. The towels smell as if they have mildew on them. The beds that "mist" you smell like mold is growing in the water lines. The prices are entirely way too high compared to what level these beds actually are. read more

Came in together with my girlfriend and the desk lady told us both she just had to clean our tanning beds before we could go. My girlfriend went ahead and I was left waiting over 35 min while I saw other people go ahead of me. There was definitely someone in the bed ahead of me. Unclear in their communication and ridiculous waiting time. And my girlfriend had to wait after her session for me for another 15 min. read more

For a place with so much attitude, you would think your getting a tan at a luxury tanning salon in the Hamptons. Don't even bother calling because they'll just rush you off the phone. Go in , and they'll act like they have a bed to clean, just busy checking they're phones. Can't even bother letting you know they'll be right with you . Just go elsewhere. read more

Let me start off by saying I have tanned in salons for years and have never been this pale! The beds are so weak and the lotions are so overwhelmingly overpriced it's almost comedic! The beds are all dusty on the tops and sides, the glass is clean but touching oily nasty controls on the beds kind of isn't pleasurable for me. Also the floors are disgusting like someone put tanning oil on the floor, I step on my shoes so I don't have to touch that horrid floor. Also room 9's "misting spray" smells like a dirty basement that has mildew in it. I'm just not going to go back to the Astoria location, hopefully one closer to my job has higher standards. read more

Was honestly horrified by my experience here. I walked in and the entire place was under construction, tools all over the floor that customers can easily trip on, construction men outside the rooms already made me uncomfortable to begin with. Mid session, while I was obviously naked and relaxing, I open my eyes to see a man standing inches away from me in the bed and hearing multiple construction men talking to him from the hall - door wide open, my body completely exposed. I was so terrified I didn't move or say anything because I was afraid and mortified that they could see me naked. Finally the guy left the room after "realizing someone was in it" (isn't it obvious with the noise, lights, and bed closed ?!). After I was sure they were out, I ran for my clothes, left early and told the manager at the front what had happened. The response I got was barely apologetic, no acknowledgement of how unacceptable this is, and when I asked to be refunded for the session I clearly wasn't able to use (the least they could do) she said she'd give me a credit to come back do another session (ha). Honestly this business should be reported for operating with the entire place under construction, doors not properly closing, and men all over the place. Clearly they prioritize revenue over client safety here (now also charging extra for winkies). Strongly advise to stay away from this business! read more

Updating my review to a 1 star. If I could do lower I would. The staff here is by far the worst and least helpful team of people I have ever encountered. They are rude to customers, dismissive to requests, and act as if you're inconveniencing them by coming to the salon to tan. It is ridiculous that every single time I come here, I am treated poorly and with an attitude from all of the employees. If this were a one time occurrence, it would not be as noteable, but this is EVERY SINGLE TIME I TAN. How has management allowed this to become the culture at Beach Bum in Astoria? Hopefully Beach Bum corporate knows that they are being represented in this way in NY. On another note, the fact that it takes an entire hour out of my Sunday to do a 10 minute tan is absolutely ridiculous. Management understaffs their Astoria location and it causes extremely long wait times for customers. On their Free Tan Sundays, they staff ONE EMPLOYEE. This person has 10-12 people waiting at any given time on a Sunday. They are split between checking people in and cleaning beds. This is disrespectful to all the customers that management can't staff 2 people for their busiest days of the week. Customers are paying A LOT to tan for Beach Bum to be this cheap with running their business. read more

Im not one to complain about much but I called and spoke with the manager , she was very professional and made me feel very appreciated. So I don't actually tan, this review is for the infrared sauna booth. The staff was extremely friendly in helping me redeem my groupon and answer my questions about the booths. I found using the heated booths to be beneficial, especially in the winter. It's a great detox and relaxing experience. If they were so expensive regularly I'd do it all the time read more

I've gotten a bunch of spray tans here, so this review is strictly about the spray tans. I typically get sprayed every two weeks from spring to fall, so I've had A LOT of spray tans - both airbrushes & versa/mystic. I moved from jersey to Astoria & had gone to beach bums in jersey for years & loved them all. This location.. not so much. I've had some really great sprays & some really horrible experiences too. For the most part, the spray tech listen to what you want & it comes out great. But here are some of the weird experiences I've had: 1. I arrived about 10 minutes early to my appointment only for the guy at the counter to tell me they're running behind. Okay, cool.. no big deal to me. He proceeds to say "yeah, the manager is a dick. He overbooked us." Oh.. okay.. thanks for that. Slightly odd interaction to have with a customer. Then.. 2. I waited about 20-30 minutes passed my appointment time before I actually got sprayed, which is fine.. I get it, shit happens. But then the girl spraying me literally only sprayed the front of me & the back. The whole thing lasted maybe 3-4 minutes. She didn't do the sides of my arms, insides of my legs, nothing. THEN the girl says "I'm going to bring the next girl back while you dry." I THOUGHT that meant that I would go into a different room or that she would just start mixing the next girl's color while I dried.. NOPE. she brought a total stranger in the room with me.. while I'm standing there naked.. literally the most uncomfortable experience of my entire life. It was also the absolute worst spray I have ever gotten. I had a wedding the next day & i had to self tan at 6:30 AM over the spray to try to fix it. 3. I've had issues with the spray techs questioning me about making me as tan as I want. I am naturally the color of a sheet of paper & when I say I want to be really tan, they constantly question me. I'll say "on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the darkest you can make me, I want a 4." & I always get a super rude "..are you sure? That's really tan.. it might not look that good with your complexion." Yes, I am sure.. I am here so you can alter the color of my complexion with this spray tan. This has happened probably 7 or 8 times. It's super frustrating because sometimes they'll give me less color than I asked for because they think it will look better. & if I ask for a second layer in some areas, I get questioned again. I know the color will develop & get darker, but I can also tell when I'm getting a crap spray tan. I really think it depends on the time of day you go & the person working that day. Sometimes your spray will come out fantastic & you'll have a wonderful experience & other times, you'll have naked strangers in the room with you. read more

The customer service here sucks. Or maybe it's just one girl. I walked in two weeks prior and scheduled an Airbrush tan for a Saturday. She said she could arrange to work on Saturday to do my tan. I called the Wednesday before my appointment to confirm and the same girl (Victoria) told me I wasn't on the schedule and nobody would be there to do it. She told me she would be there until 4pm Sunday, so I rescheduled for 2pm on Sunday. Friday I got a call informing me she was unavailable Sunday! The party I'm attending is Monday, so there were no other options. I asked to speak to a manager, who wasn't available of course. I then called the other location down Steinway. I asked about the booth, then asked if the manager was the same for both locations. He said yes, and told me HE was the manager. I explained the situation and he told me that Victoria doesn't usually work weekends, but she comes in to do the airbrushing for clients. He didn't really care. My conclusion, Victoria wasn't honest with me in the first place about her schedule. When her personal life interfered with my appointment she just cancelled. read more

Amazing place! The minute you step in it's very calming and has a great ambience about it. Maybe it's the use of browns, the light decorum of pillows brushed against the windows or the fine use of gold accents...you feel welcomed right off the bat. I was lucky enough to be introduced by Gabby. She was extremely professional in introducing me to everything they offer and educating me on proper way of tanning and how frequently to do it for my ideal tan. They offer a Cocoon which has like a Sauna like feel, helps open up your pores and help burn off any access water weight or fat to give you a slimmer look. ALSO just good if you need some therapeutic vibes. ALL IN ALL. Really great place. Will definitely be coming back. read more

Yeah, tanning isn't so great for the skin, but this is a good place to go if you'd like to get a tan. No clue why there are two on Steinway Street within a few blocks of each other, but I'm not complaining! This one is close to my apartment, I've never had to wait long (I do tend to go at off-times though), and the staff is always friendly. For those of you who are worried about it, they do have sunless tanning too, but I've never used it, so I can't really speak for it. read more

I've been a Beach Bum customer for the past ten years, going to locations on Long Island and in the city. I was excited to see that there were locations near my new place in Astoria. Unfortunately, every single time I've been to this location I've been given a problem, a bad attitude, and have experienced unprofessional behavior. The problems varied from being unable to "find" my sessions, being unable to take a coupon because it wasn't in the system (but had somehow been mailed to my house), and not allowing me in at 11:30, when they close at 12. I hate that this place has the same name as some other wonderful establishments, because it is tainting the reputation of other Beach Bums. read more

This place is absolutely wonderful. I went in there to get a tan because a friend of mine suggested that the additional Vitamin D would make me feel brighter and happier and it absolutely did. Beyond the fact that I loved the results of my tan, the service here was outstanding. I really enjoyed my experience completely from the moment I walked in to the moment I left. The staff here is really what makes this establishment a place you want to be loyal to. They make you feel completely at home and comfortable. This has to be one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had. I will definitely be back there as a regular and I highly recommend you go there whether you are looking for that beautiful summer glow or want to feel happier and healthier. read more

It doesn't take a lot to have a service like this run well, unfortunately the customer service is awful. Rude and don't make eye contact, almost like you are bothering them by coming in. I don't know about other locations, but this was was a HORRIBLE experience. The receptionist guy was harrasingly trying to convince me to get a package. He wasn't even nice, he was rude. Somebody should tell him that when you want sb to buy sth from you, it pays off to actually be nice. So after he realized I'm not going to get a package, I became air to him. He wouldn't even glance at me throwing my credit card back at me. Unbelievable. And if that wasn't enough-- they're tanning standing tube must be a joke. It's filthy, there's no paper towels to stand on or anything. No slippers. The tube must have been created for a midget. There's no clock inside, so you don't know how much time is left. I had to slouch and assume weird positions to be able to hold to those handles. And the tube is tiny like a cage, I couldn't even turn around without bumping against walls. read more

For my birthday coming up a good friend of mine bought me 5 sessions of spray tan. I went last night, and the woman at the front counter was terribly rude. I spoke with a woman the day before and made a 6'o'clock appointment which I told her before hand I might not be able to make because I had work, the woman from the previous days phone call assured me that was fine and to just come in when I can and I would be served. So I walk in at 7:25 and the woman behind the counter tells me I need to wait until 9:45 at night because they have a 7:45 appointment... the service takes 15 minutes... she also tells me how the customer with a 7:45 appointment is a valued customer and I'm not so they don't want to anger her.... the airbrush woman is a bit nicer and says she'll take me now so I'll be done before the other woman comes in at 7:45. I pay 5.45 for the ebony sheen and get taken to a room and tanned. Possibly the worst most blotchy and LIGHT tan I've ever received. My entire back thighs are white and blotchy. I paid for the spray tan and extra for the darkest tan possible. This is horrible. Orangey and blotchy and just terrible. I'm so so so disappointed. The service was horrible. I was made so uncomfortable and after following their directions and not showering for an entire day I still look like I used the spray tan from the drug store... actually even worse. Sad because this is the only beach bum around me and I got 4 more sessions to go. Not looking forward to it at all. Update. Spoke to Bianca and told her my experience. She was so kind and absolutely respectful and apologetic for her co-workers attitude and disrespect. She offered me a free retouch with the ebony sheen and also my first session back. Very kind of her and much appreciated. Going to see her tomorrow to fix this mess and I'm excited to have a dark even tan and to meet such a sweet and professional young woman. read more

I thoroughly enjoy coming to Beach Bum (fresh pond road) however since it's closed for renovations i came to the one in Astoria. Unfortunately i wish i waited until my usual one opened back up. 1. Their website doesn't offer the new location address. I primarily live in California so when i am in town I'd like to find your location 2. I use the "S Class" bed (level 4) i don't often burn & ive always gotten such a great tan from this bed. Not only did the bed look like it was ancient but it had cracks that warrants a new bed. I found a long black hair on the bed after it said it was "sanitized" which led me to believe it probably wasn't 3. There was no towel & by the time i realized it i was already naked. I had to use my sports bra to wipe the sweat off after my tan!! 4. Immediately after exiting the bed (after the full 12min.) please keep in mind i have a base tan & i never burn with 12 minutes, my entire backside is completely burned & pulsating from the heat! It seems they perhaps changed their bulbs recently which would be the only explanation for this. If that's the case, the girls at the front should've told me so that i don't look like a lobster from the back!! 5. Their bathroom was out of order so i couldn't wash my hands post tan from my lotion Quite disappointed in this location & will wait until my fresh pond location reopens to tan again :( UPDATE: I am pleasantly surprised and impressed by the immediate response i received from the VP of Operations for Beach Bum Tanning in regards to my review. I have NEVER had anyone reach out via phone call to apologize. I am extremely pleased with the customer service. I do not write reviews to "bash" a business but in the past my experience with telling staff members my concerns has never addressed nor resolved issues. I simply wanted to let others know what to avoid. I love a business that takes customer service seriously and addresses the issues immediately. Between a phone call and a very thorough email from the VP, i have no doubts that Beach Bum takes their business seriously. I really appreciate this gesture to keep your customers satisfied therefore with pleasure i will be returning to Beach Bum (for now just their Fresh Pond location) as it is closest to where i am staying whilst in town. My actual spray tan turned out great but getting it was such a hassle! When I called to make an appointment the person on the phone kept telling me to hold on and call back. He seemed very annoyed and could not answer basic questions about spray tanning such as how long I'd have to wait before taking a shower. That stuff I easily shrugged off. I got a lot more annoyed, however, when, on the day and time of my appointment, I had to wait in the salon for AN HOUR to actually get my spray tan. Whoever booked the appointments didn't realize what time the person doing the spray tans was coming in. By the time she got there, a few people were already waiting so all the appointments got pushed back. Making the situation even worse, two other spray tan customers got into a fight over whose appointment was first! Then I was told by the person at the front desk that I'd only have to wait like 15 to 20 minutes for my tan but had to wait an hour, if not more. Aside from all this confusion and drama the actual spray tan looked really good and woman doing the spray tan was very professional and apologetic. read more

I've been a member of beach bum for years and I especially like this location! :) Rafael is always helpful, I love him!! They often offer spring discounts, free Sunday tans, and student discounts. Cons .. Couple girls who work there, need to loose the attitude though. Also, the website and Google too says they're open until midnight but sometimes they close earlier. read more

I usually love tanning here but this place made me so mad the other day. They offered a free tan day, and even suggested to bring a friend. I got a text about it because I'm on the list and I saw the sign inside. I was legit excited about it. But on that same day- it was their first ever day closing two hours early??? I don't understand- google even said it was open till 10 but apparently on the free tan day they decided to change their hours. My friend and I went all the way there and saw 5 other people try to open the door to get their tan in the two minutes that we were outside. Whoever on their marketing or management team decided to pair these days up and not let it be clear they were closing early definitely made a mistake. read more

Meh! This was the first time I tried baking at a tanning salon and I didn't quite like it for multiple reasons. The receptionist at the front desk was friendly but she was really pushing me to buy a package deal, which I did not want to. If I wanted a package deal, I would have asked for it. Then she was making me buy a whole bottle of tanning lotion... if I wanted a bottle, I would have asked for it. I ended up getting a single treatment along with a free one, which I found nice. The prices were too expensive and I should have done my research before hand. There are other tanning salons in Astoria and in Park slope where a single session can cost you $8 bucks and they don't push products on you. Would I go back? No. read more

I have been going to Beach Bum Tanning in the Astoria location for a long time. I had a rhinoplasty in March 2016 and I was "advised" to put the account on hold until I am clear to start tanning again. What that means is that I have to pay a fee of $5.72 to keep it active. I recently moved and I after 10 months of paying that fee for no reason I have decided to cancel it. The manager said I need to do the cancellation in person but I told her I no longer live in NYC. Then she said she needs to activate my account and cancel it after but that would mean I need to pay a fee of $65 even if I do not go there!!!!!!!!!! As you can imagine I WAS FURIOUS! The manager then said she cannot do anything about it and she asked if "I READ THE CONTRACT AND IF I CAN READ?" She then said she will have her VP of Operations called me, which never happened... This is the biggest SCAM I have ever come across in my life! I used to be a Beach Bum advocate but that is NOT anymore. Would not recommend it, especially that location. Pleasantly surprised when I received a call from the manager after I had posted the review. She was helpful and had assisted with the cancellation! Genna is great and I would return to Beach Bum ONLY because of her. read more

Had a great experience here. Was welcomed with a friendly smile and as was my first time talked through (knowledgeably) by the gentleman. The salon was clean and the sun beds good. I was told all about the process and packages and offers available to me. I was also given the chance to buy the best deal for me and asked what were my needs. I was sad when they closed the other Steinway location because that one was way more convenient for me when I would get off the train from work, but I had been to this location several times throughout the years and have never had a problem. I hadn't been there in a while but I went yesterday afternoon and it was great. The ladies behind the desk were friendly and welcoming, the space was clean and there were fresh towels in the room as well as the stickers for your eyes (I never remember to bring my goggles) I didn't have to wait for a bed, but never have to wait long even if it is crowded. I have never had any issues with any of the staff, they are always friendly and what I really like is that they don't pressure you to purchase any lotions or any of the products, they are there to answer any questions but never pushy. read more

This place is very clean, has a good location, and the staff is great. Variety of options are offered, you can lay down or you can get your tan in a stand up position. The machines are always cleaned and sanitized, there is an extra towel if you get sweaty, you can play some music and control the intensity of the light. Rarely the place is packed, I never had to wait. I recommend this place. read more
