The salon is in the former City Sun location which I used to go to. The set up is pretty much the same but the beds have been updated and are good. The staff is amazing! The sessions are appropriately priced. My only criticisms are I wish I could just press the start button inside the bed instead of having to wait for the lights to come on or pressing the blue button that's on the wall. It would also be convenient to be able to keep a bottle of lotion there but I get it. Space is a premium and people leave it and probably forget they left it there. Other than that it's pretty good. I haven't done the spray in this location so I can't review it. But they do offer it along with red light therapy in what looks like a giant shell. read more

I have had a very less than pleasant experience with Beach Bum. While signing up for a membership, the financial instructions were extremely unclear and my card was charged $500 with a three month financial commitment to the beds ($250 upon signing up, $140 the following month, and $110 the third month). I asked for clarification regarding the steep recurring costs because it did not align with the information online and what I was "sold" when signing up in store. However, the staff gave me confusing information with no clear explanation or support throughout the process beside stating that it was what I agreed to within my contract and that tanning is a luxury service. Additionally, I have not had a good experience with the bulbs in Beach Bum's beds. I regularly tanned for three months and after a few weeks of not going in, I am already back to my original color. Even worse, I have white, pigmented circles all over my chest and shoulders. They are concerning. (I am aware that I willingly went to the tanning beds and this is a risk of my decision, but it is unfortunate and not something I have experienced at other tanning salons/beds.) Brittany, the manager, was kind enough to contact me in regard to my concerns once I voiced my frustrations with the company as well as cancel my membership on the spot. Honestly loved my experience here, Clean, professional, and the girl at the front desk so super sweet and honest when I was picking my tan package. Had never tried a tan bed before and this set the bar! She made me feel so comfortable and gave a proper rundown as well as providing protective eyewear. This is such a poorly run salon. Originally bought a package of the highest level tans because I didn't need to tan often and was specifically told they do not expire. With this package I also bought two spray tans and was told I could get two free "add ons". When I went in for my spray tan, I was told that the salon was under new ownership and the add ons would not be honored (fine, not a big deal still got the spray tan). Fast forward a few months and I go to use a tan and am told my remaining tans have expired which is why I bought the package that I did. This place is such a scam, go anywhere else. read more

The first time I came here I had an hour to kill and was in the area before a work dinner. Corey was awesome. It's okay, not the best, not the worst. I haven't tanned in a tanning bed since 2006. I've been doing sunless airbrush tanning for the past 10+ years to help save my skin from the damage of the sun and so should you! Coming from Cali, I had many options of great aestheticians who specialized in spray tanning. Unfortunately, in the years I was in NYC I was not able to find one for a reasonable price ($20-$30 in socal) so I opted for this as an alternative. Spray tanning in a booth is not my ideal but it will do. I always walk away having missed a spot here or there. This is your typical tanning salon with various tanning beds and tanning booths, not sure if you can get a customized spray here. read more

I've been tanning with Beach Bum for years. I went in my hometown, I went throughout college, and now I've been going here for the last 2 years. Honestly, compared to other tanning chains I've tried, I have always preferred and gone back to this one. And this location in particular is the best. Everyone that works here is kind, knowledgeable, and quick to help you, especially Sarah. The few times I've asked her a question or to help select a lotion, she's been great! I'm always greeted when I leave and enter, and every employee promptly helps me. When you're low on tanning sessions or they have a promotion going on they let you know so that you can decide to renew or purchase at a discount, which is always great. I don't think I've ever paid full-price here honestly. I only use the tanning beds, so I guess I can only vouch for them: they're always clean and in mice condition before my use. I've never had any problems here. I can only imagine this location's other services are just as well-maintained. I'm going to continue to come here because I love it. I have no interest in testing the waters elsewhere. read more

I found Beach Bum via Yelp and decided to try an automated spray tan for the first time; the price was very affordable! I called to inquire about pricing and setting up an appointment and the guy was pretty short with me, telling me to just come in and that spray tans were $40ish. Shortly after, I walked over and was VERY impressed with the cleanliness and atmosphere of the shop. It ones of the nicest tanning salons I've been to! I told the employee what I wanted and he gave me some suggestions. I told him I had never used a booth for a spray tan and was a little surprised when he said "you're in room #__, watch the video and it will tell you what to do." I would have appreciated it if he had taken a minute to walk me over and given me a few tips that the video didn't cover. For example, the video screen shows you the 4-5 different arm positions you need to do to achieve an even tan (which makes sense). But the screen is on the outside of the booth, so once you are in the booth there is no way to reference the positions... I suggest they add a poster to the wall so you can see the positions while you're in the booth. I'm happy with the color result the employee suggested but felt like, even with the video, I wasn't given much guidance. Not being able to see the arm positions again caused some spots on my arms to be missed so my after results were a little uneven. Overall, I recommend this place if you have had automated spray tans before and know what to do; OR make sure you specifically ask them to show you the room and how it works. read more

I wanted to get some color quickly, and was really debating whether to go get an airbrush spray or hop in a UV bed (I hate the smells and maintenance for spray tans, but love the fast color). I'm SO GLAD I opted for a bed at beach bum! Their staff is incredibly helpful, ready to address your questions, and patient-- it's obvious they want you to have the best experience possible. I'm actually surprised I haven't written a review for this location yet... I've been coming here on and off ever since they moved from 14th street. If you're familiar with the old location, no real need to read this review as it's pretty much the same all around. For those wondering what this place is like, I'm obviously a fan since I gave it 4 stars. Some of the staff is very friendly, other staff members don't particularly seem to care, but nobody is by any means rude. I mean work is work right? Can't blame someone for not being enthusiastic 24/7. Place is clean. The rooms actually seem to be more accommodating than what I remember the other location to be. There are hooks as well as a little shelf, and a small ottoman or table... So no more putting my bag or clothing down on the floor. And, just like other beach bums, they are very accommodating with packages. Pretty sure it's not a location thing because I've been to maybe 5 different beach bums and they all are happy to give you a couple extra sessions for free if you renew your package. They need to open one farther downtown... Walking or taking a cab from the financial district isn't the worst, but I mean, it would be nice if it weren't miles away. read more

Went on and off to CitySun for years which was by far the best place in the city with thoughtful touches like peppermint candies, eye protection, cold towels, complimentary water bottles and well kept up machines. While beachbum has kept a few touches, it's not kept up as well. They are often out of cold towels, only have disposable eyewear now, and after repeatedly telling them that the bed fan was off and the spray canisters are always empty on the top level machines, I have yet to get there where everything was on point. The place is fine, but at this price I hoped they'd at least maintain the quality of the previous owners. It's still slightly better than the other beachbums but like others have said, CitySun is sorely missed. read more

I went for a spray tan. It was the first time I've gotten a spray tan from a technician. She was lovely but my results were not what I had expected. There were a few spots that looked darker than others, and it wasn't very even in places but luckily, nothing that was super noticeable to people unless I pointed it out or they looked closely. The guy at the front desk had up sold me on a "special" so I have like 4 more sessions that I can go back. Hopefully next time will be better. read more

I went in for a spray tan and had a 7:15 appointment and had to wait until 8:00 to get the spray. It took FOREVER! The woman who sprayed me was very very nice but it the wait was ridiculous. Overall the spray was pretty good, it lasted about 6 days. read more

I'm an experienced tanner and know my skin type and what works. No matter what I said, the guy at the front objected and tried to upsell me. I then told him I wanted to go max time and he wouldn't allow me too, although I have never burnt before in my life. Went for 7 minutes as he insisted I would burn in 1.5 hours. Literally the weakest bed I've ever bed in and I didn't have the slightest burn. Listen to what your customers want. I will never return to this location again after my experience. It is rare that I edit, clarify, or retract a previous posting as I pride myself on writing well thought out reviews that reflect a place's overall quality and not just my spur of the moment emotional reaction to a situation. Having said that, Beach Bum's handling of my recent bad experience with them merits my revisiting of my last review. I really respect a company that takes seriously enough a customer's experience to not only contact them (which Beach Bum did almost immediately) but then take steps to go beyond not only repairing a relationship in order to measurably improve their way of doing business. Beach Bum really went beyond what was necessary and has changed my negative review into a positive one. I got the feeling that this was not just a way to get rid of a bad review but was of real concern for their level of customer service. So thank you Dante (the manager) and thank you to the gentleman at the front desk (whose name I unfortunately do not know but deserve special props for handling my situation and thanking me by name!) for making good on your promise to provide excellent service. The place is your typical tanning salon, in regards to looks and cleanliness. The service that I received however, was horrendous and super awkward from one particular guy at the front desk with a skinny beard. I went in prior to a wedding and just needed 1 tan. They have 5 different tiers to go in, starting at $17... all the way up to like ~$40 per session. He told me I couldn't go in one of the bottom "cheaper" tiers because those are for people with diseases (apparently people with diseases like only reddening bulbs). So I had to start at the $26 level. Then I said... Okay, well I'll buy this Yelp deal ($10 for $25 worth of services). And he told me I couldn't because that was "only for packages... it's written in the fine print." But when I pulled up the fine print, it said it could be used for any "Services" (which he proceeded to tell me "Services means Packages") and I said that makes no sense. Finally ... he asked the other lady standing next to him and she was like "yeah of course she can use it on a single visit." He literally let me walk out the door twice. But I was in a time crunch and it was really close to my apartment. Bottom line, tanning has become expensive anyway, they give you a hard time to use the deal, they're rude, spend your money elsewhere. read more

I came here for a spray tan on Sunday, I had the best spray tan experience ever, I walked in, I was greeted and taken care of immediately! JOEY at the front desk was so helpful and sweet!!! I purchased my session, ARIES took me to my booth and thoroughly explained what to do, how to stand, what to expect.... She was AMAZING.... I now have a beautiful even tan..!!! Love this place! Mostly because of the service. The shorter guy who's usually working the front desk at night is the best! Very sweet and hospitable. My favorite worker there and definitely wants to cater to what you're looking for in terms of services. Some of the girls who work there aren't necessarily the friendliest, but I haven't had any problems with them. Prices are average so nothing crazy if you consider that this is Manhattan. This place is absolutely disgusting. I am so sad city sun had to sell out, the owners of beach bum probably have never cleaned the place once since they took over. I'm not kidding, just look at the floor when you come in let alone look at the floor of any of the spray tan or bed rooms....Piles of actual dirt everywhere. I bought a package of 3 for airbrush tanning. The guy at the front tried to pretend my email promotion i had specifically from NYC didn't exist....The second time I came, i was told the spray tanner was 'booked all night'. He was a complete tool about it too. He said I could use the machine which was obviously worth less than what I purchased my package for. I walked to the back and actually passed the 2 spray rooms where they were empty with door open. By the time I left, the 'spray-er' who was absolutely booked all night was hanging out at the front doing nothing with the other moron who told me I couldn't get airbrush. Literally was there for 30 minutes because they made me wait 15 to 'setup' the booth. The guy lied to my face and made me go in a disgusting room for the machine spray. The girl who sprayed me did a good job (the first time) I will say that, the only reason I go is because its so close to my apartment but wish someone else would open up near by. HEY BEACH BUM - Whoever allowed these guys to franchise this location, you really need to do a check in on them. Gross for the brand. read more
