Loved this place while it lasted, but the cancellation process was a mess. I emailed ahead of my renewal date to cancel my membership because I was planning to leave the city for a while. They acknowledged my request and said it wouldn't be a problem -- but I still got charged on the renewal date. That was frustrating, but I figured it could be resolved with a refund. The owner responded and said they'd issue one, but after that... nothing. It's been over a month with no follow-up or action, despite multiple attempts to follow up. I've been coming to The Tanning Spot for a while now, and honestly the staff here deserves way more credit. Every time I walk in, they greet me right away, they're super friendly, and they always help me pick the right bed or lotion based on what I'm looking for that day. The place is always clean, organized and smells good. You can tell they actually take their time wiping everything down and making sure customers feel comfortable. I've never had an issue getting buzzed in or checking in. The girl at the front desk is attentive and helpful, and she always explain everything clearly, especially to new customers. I bought a package at The Tanning Spot through Groupon, and they outright refused to provide the service. I confirmed with the front desk before purchasing, and the app even allowed the transaction, yet they still denied it. I tried visiting multiple times, but they were closed before their posted hours. The machines are terrible, the facility is a mess, and the service is nonexistent. This is not a deal--it's a scam. You pay for what you get, and what you get is a complete waste of money. This place used to be so AMAZING! But the past few months some of the staff either got fired or left and things have gone down south ever since. The hours of operation are NOT what they read on Yelp or the door!!!! They're open all different hours and when they feel they want to be open. The hours they post are fake!!! The door bell is broken, so there is a line of people standing at the front calling their business phone or pray the door buzzes people in. Which never happens lately. If you spend money on their membership good luck getting in to tan because they're never open and the new blonde lady that works there has no clue how to operate the joint. Assuming nobody taught her because she seems like a good person. Just stressed out. Whoever the owner is, if you're reading this please fix your door bell to buzz people in so we can tan. I came in today for a tanning, as I saw on Google that your operating hours on Sundays are listed as 10 AM to 10:30 PM. However, when I arrived, I noticed that the posted hours on the door indicated 12 PM to 6 PM. I arrived at 11:50 AM and waited for 20 minutes, no one answered the phone or opened the door for me. STAY AWAY. I am putting 1 star simply because 0 stars is not provided as an option. The old blond lady at the reception is exceptionally rude. There were three clients in front of me and she managed to pick a fight with each one of them. When it was my turn to be berated she aggressively informed me she can't hear me and then proceeded to tell me that I need to give her a second. Mind you, I was not even asking her for anything but was patiently waiting for my turn. I can't say anything about the quality of tanning or the machines as I left before trying. I signed up for 3 month's membership. Cancelled it mid-may. Came in today, May 30, as my last tanning visit. My lotion was gone. Ok, no big deal I thought. I politely asked to either find my lotion or find a solution. Front desk was new , I haven't seen her before. She called her manager. Manager, in raised voice, said , in summary; it's her day off and she want to get back to her daughter". She deny my rights for service and hang up. What a "lovely customer service" I thought, totally puzzled on attitude given. Well, I , also, came on my day off and wanted to get my tanning session". Instead of looking for a solution I hear bunch of nonsense like contradictory "you trust us with lotion and we keep it" to "we are not responsible for items left with us" to "you forgot you took it with you" to " we don't give free lotion"to "your bottle was extremely empty". Just give me mine so I can get my 8 minutes of tan and be gone. Gone till winter most likely. Thats is all. But no, It started turning into rather ugly one-sided quarrel, so I walked away after I been denied to provide service. I got no service, no lotion, ruined mood. Pretty much I came to look at the tanning booth and went home. Most likely, they probably throw bottle away assuming I wont show up for remaining days. I hope manager enjoys get time with her daughter completely ruined my day off for no reason. Solution aka small bag of lotion for single session would cost 10$-12$. She did not try to understand I am cool that they throw it away, I just need this particular session to happen. I was NOT asking to replace expensive bottle they throw. It be expired by winter anyway. I needed service which I did not get. Service aka my right to use tanning booth even with or without lotion. Oh, well. Also, one my think, unlimited monthly membership with 3 months minimum contract would cost identical amounts each month. Nope, you are wrong. What was 50$/month promotional deal with 3 months minimum turned into $79.66 , $68.69 and $71.41 . even adding tax to $50 does not solve this mystery. read more

Been here a few times for the spray tan. Staff have always been nice. Only peeve is the little fan to dry you off after the spray tan. Need a bigger one. My tans have always turned out great but don't have any plans for right after the tan or that night. You look like a oompalumpa. I will go back with Groupon. read more

Hey Tanning Spot. I just met you, and this is crazy. But here's my credit card - charge it maybe? No seriously, if you are looking for THE tanning salon on the island of Manhattan, stop looking. And stop HERE. To give you an idea, I just about had it with getting screwed by the establishments on the Upper West Side (I'm looking at YOU Portofino Sun and Beach Bum), that I decided to think out of the box. I was mostly looking for a place on the UES but this one came so highly recommended I decided to take a look. Now, I live on the upper 90s. My husband asked me, when he found out where this place was, if I was still on the island. That is how far I am willing to travel to come here. You can't beat it. This is what happens when I walk in...nice day, very welcoming atmosphere, the attendant looks up and actually GREETS me. I was nearly blown away (customer service is a dying art form and when people are actually nice, I get surprised). I told her I'd never been here before, she said the first tan is COMPLIMENTARY. Well butter my butt and call me biscuit!! I rocked that free tan! But I knew once I was done (all stand up booths, btw) that I would be back. The staff is super nice, the booths are good and all in all just a pleasant experience. I did give them my credit card and they did charge it...I got a package. So I guess I'm headed to Guam once a week to get tan. It's worth it here though. Only gripe? The doors on the booth don't seem to close properly. It takes a bit to close them, and there are signs that say "don't slam the doors," yet you kind of have to in order to get them to close. It's a catch-22. The receptionist was beyond rude. We arrived at 12 pm because we wanted to get in right when the spot opened as we had a reservation soon after. Upon arriving 5 min late to open the door, instead of apologizing that she was late as we had been clearly waiting, she said "i need 5 min" in an extremely condescending and dismissive tone. I asked that since we had been waiting and had plans after if she could possibly get us in sooner since the salon was supposed to have opened 10 Min ago at this point. Worst spray tan I've ever had. I've gone in twice for a spray tan (once on a medium and once on dark) and being a spray tan veteran I exfoliated and showered before and kept moisturized and didn't shower for at least 12 hours after. After both spray tans, as soon as I would take a shower again the color would completely rinse down the drain and I would come out exactly the same color as before I got the spray tan. Did not even last two days. Waste of money. read more

Definitely not the strongest beds or the longest allowed time in the beds, but definitely worth the money. I went here for a few months and I never felt SUPER dark, but I did feel like I had some color. And you can't beat the price, its like $40-50 for an unlimited month. I prefer lay down tanning and they only have stand up, which is a small downside for me personally. But if I thought the ability to lay down was worth the higher price, I could go somewhere else. The price is perfect...free first tan for new customers...and then you can do single tans for $10 each time...or, for a way better option...sign up for the membership deal...it's a minimum of a 3 month commitment but...it's $30 a month charged to your card at the beginning of each month...and you can tan as much or as little as you want!! Honestly...if you go 3 times in one month it's paid for...how is that NOT a great deal?!?! Know this: they don't do mid-month to mid-month so...if you were to go today and sign up...they would pro-rate the rest of Feb and then you would be committed to 3 full months on top of that!! No big deal...just know it before going in :) Know this too: you need to verbally cancel the membership BEFORE the end of the 3rd month...I think like the week before...just tell them you don't want to continue and your card won't be charged...or, you can continue tanning for just $30 a month even after the membership has "expired"! All the girls behind the desk are sweet...and outgoing. All the beds are stand-ups. Yes they get hot, they are tanning beds...duh haha...the earlier in the day that you can get there the better...and avoid the 5-7 time frame if you don't want to wait but the longest I've waited was 5-10 minutes. I get eczema during the winter and this year it started earlier than usual due to the cold. I've read about tanning as a cure and decided to try it since I couldn't bear to take steroids all winter. After doing extensive research I've found Tanning Spot offers the best option for what I need (i.e. eczema relief and not color). For eczema sufferers like myself, don't go to places with tanning beds b/c it could irritate your skin and aggravate the condition. Also, you shouldn't use the tanning lotion because, again - it's an irritant. After doing extensive research of all the tanning places in Manhattan, the Tanning Spot fit my needs perfectly. Another location I called tried to sell me the high pressure, lotion and something about extra bronzing that I repeatedly said I don't need. I tried it and all the other reviewers were right. It's cheap, clean, friendly and efficient. If you want some eczema relief this winter, definitely give this place a try. Why pay extra for the bells and whistles that you don't need? I started with 6 minutes and already my eczema feels better. I may increase the time to 8 minutes next time depending on how dry and cold this winter gets. I didn't get hot as the other reviewers did. In fact, I didn't even break a sweat after 6 minutes but I have pretty high tolerance for heat. Ultimately nothing beats sun and sea water but Tanning Spot is a much cheaper and more time efficient alternative to fly south. I do have to warn that the American Skin Association does not approve of tanning for eczema relief due to the obvious skin cancer risks but compared to the alternative (high doses of steroids and antibiotics) or endless nights of no sleep and discomfort - I'll risk some UV damage. The cost of tanning in nyc was the only thing stopping me- now i can afford it! Very nice, clean place. The girl at the counter is really friendly and helpful. Great Location right off the 6 train or a 15 min walk from union square. The only con would be that they only have stand up booths which might be a problem for some people (not me). like another yelper said, it can sometimes be hot in the booth especially if it was recently used, but this hasn't been a huge problem for me either. if u get too hot u can open the door for a sec to let some of the hot air out or take some water with you. Update on my previous review: At first, I believed the regular amount of bulbs out(avg 5 per visit/bed) was excusable due to their reasonable prices. As I already stated in my previous review, they HAD great customer service and comp'd you a tan if there were bulbs out. This is NOT the case any longer. Today, I was put in a bed with an ENTIRE PANEL OUT. What? Seriously? I am paying for a service - a tan- and am not even able to achieve that with this unacceptable bulb upkeep. I don't care what the rooms look like, the bathroom, the workers, anything....all I want is a FUNCTIONING bed and the tanning spot does not provide that. In addition, i told the front desk girl and all she had to say was "oh sorry" Also- the other day I mentioned that there were about 8 bulbs out in another bed and the girl said there are bulbs out in EVERY bed and that's just how it is. If you want a tan, I would pay more at a different place, so that you are actually getting the service you are dishing out the cash for. read more

And as a Califronia Girl who is used to free tanning, like in my own backyard, I hate to pay for mediocre tanning beds and crappy customer service from guidettes in training. The staff here are very friendly! Always smiling even when there are tons of folks waiting for a tan. The beds give a seriously quick all over tan. I am a lovely toasted goddess in just 6 minutes. I have never had to wait more then 5 minutes for a bed to open up and even if you do have to wait there is a large comfy waiting space. Unlimited tanning for $25 a month??? What??? I have no idea how this place plans to stay in business in NYC but with those prices, I'm sure as hell going to take advantage of that deal. This tanning salon is alittle bit of a trek from my apartment, but even if I went as little as once a month, I still feel like i'm getting my money's worth. Because this place is new, it is EXTREMELY clean! My only complaint is that the machines are extremely hot AND poorly circulated. I felt so suffocated at one point that I had to open the door to stick out my head to gasp for air. This has NEVER happened in the 10+ years i've been tanning. I have a very high tolerance for heat and love really hot tanning beds, but this was different. Feeing super hot and not being able to breathe are two different things. They have 15 booths (give or take), so i'm hoping i'll have better luck in another booth. But just to be on the safe side, next time I go back I will defintely be bringing a bottled water to keep right outside the door, just incase I endure the same experience. I recommend others to do the same. On the up side of things, I defintely got color (tan) on my very first session. The staff is nice, and for any complaint I may have listed above, for $25 a month...to expect perfection is just silly. Stopped in today for a tan and got one free since I am new customer. I liked that There was no pressure to buy more. Didnt like having to climb the stairs to get to the store and the booths are a bit small but hey it gets the job done and for the price they charge its worth it. You can choose either $29.00/month for unlimited tans (3 month minimum) or $10 per tan. Perfect for a quick lunchtime tan. Update: I will not be going back here again. I got stuck inside one of the booths and one of the attendants had to get me out. Plus, midway through tanning the fan stopped working. I told them to cancel my membership but they charged me anyway and refused to refund.
