I've been living in Long Beach for years and had no idea how much history was right outside my front door. This tour taught me so much about my own city and that's saying something from a know it all like me! Haha. And the food! Wow. Why didn't I do this sooner?! The tour was so much fun! Layla (food guide extraordinaire) has so much knowledge about every place we visited. She even shared historical facts about Long Beach. I knew I was in for some treats but the added history was a major bonus! The food portions were generous and delicious! We even had delicious beer & wine pairings with our food! One of the things that I hate about organizing a staff event or a group event is the lack of responsiveness from the organizer. Well, Layla and Beach City Food Tours is the exact opposite. She was very responsive from the first call I made, answered all my questions about the food tour, AND she was very flexible regarding the time and the number of people attending the event. Oh, and did I tell you I only gave her 4 day advance notice? How it works: 1. After you contact Layla (her contact info is on their website), you let her know when and how many people are interested in the food tour. She will say if there is availability or not, and if there is, you coordinate the exact time and place to meet. 2. Payment is made in advance, but she was understanding about adding on a couple of people on the day of. 3. She takes you on a restaurant tour of DT LB area, 3 savory and 3 sweet/dessert. The whole tour takes about 3 hours. 4. You can add alcohol option for $15, and that was either beer or wine at 2 out of the 6 places. 5. Tour was about $65, and I thought it was a very fair price for what we got. Food-wise, we had some appetizers, fish taco, pizza, some pasta, and dessert at the end. There was a coffee tasting and raw juice place as well. I was very full at the end, and I didn't think I would be. 6. You get a little tote bag! It was a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon (this was our staff motivational event), and I got to try a few places in LB that I would've never known about otherwise. So what makes a great food tour? The first thing has to be a gracious, passionate and knowledgeable tour guide. Check. Layla was so informative and pleasant and really made the tour. She has such a love for Long Beach and its history! Next, there needs to be some great stops and food. Check and check. 7+ tastings and everyone leaves sated and happy, and with a discount book for future visits. George's Greek Cafe The Flaming Cheese was so good... sooooooooo good! I might have dreamed about it... Just maybe! And they truly make you feel like family! Definitely want to come back here for a full meal! Pier 76 Fish Grill The Smoked Fish Tacos were some of the best I have ever had, and paired perfectly wiht the Pineapple Cider! I need to try the Lobster Roll on the next visit. Michael's Pizzeria The Margherita Pizza was fantastic and had the charred crust just the way I like it. House-made mozzarella, tomato sauce, basil, extra virgin olive oil, and tomato sauce. The Pasta was homemade and the ragu was so right on! And the Calabrian chili oil on the table was a nice touch. Rainbow Juices Everything is so fresh and delicious... and you cannot help but feel like you are drinking to your health! The Kale Mafia was my fave and features Kale, Apple, Lemon & Ginger. The Bohemian was also great and is orange + carrot + lemon + turmeric + ginger. Blanking on the other ones we tasted... Argh. I was having too much fun to write it down. Recreational Coffee Was really not sure what to expect with the Iced Basilfruit, but this drink was totally unique and surprisingly delicious! Iced coffee with homemade grapefruit and basil reduction. The Pie Bar Laurie's Key-Lime Pie in a cup was spectacular. Loved this little shop! Romeo Chocolates The drinking hot chocolate was comforting and so tasty! This place is small and charming and again, they just took great care of us. My wife and I have went on many food tours and this was by far the best one! It unexpectedly ended up just being us and Cassidy the tour guide and we had so much fun and Cassidy made us feel like we were great friends, not just customers throughout the entire tour. We chatted about everything from our shared love of food and cooking to architecture and history of Long Beach to crazy things we eat that make our significant others think we are insane. We even got to give Cassidy some news about the availability of shared favorite midwestern foods in AZ where we live. The food on the tour was also fantastic and we plan on going back to many places that we stopped at. We have also been on food tours where you leave hungry in the past and this was definitely NOT one of those tours. We had everything from Saganaki "flaming cheese" to pizza and chocolate and left very pleasantly full. My wife and I took the East Village Craft Cocktail tour with Lisa Mendoza and we loved it! The charm of this part of Long Beach is evident. We stopped at five locations: James Republic, The Blind Donkey, District Wine, Padre, and Mezcalero. My wife enjoyed our first stop James Republic, and I really loved the last stop Menzcalero. Each place we went to was great, and you cerean't go wrong with any of the cocktails. They were all delicious. Our tour guide Lisa was fantastic! She is definitely a people person. The conversation was easy and natural. She told us the history and bits of trivia about each place. We also played this fun game in which she gave us a different card at each stop, and after the fifth stop we played a hand of poker with our cards. If you are looking for a fun and charming time with a friend or loved one, and you like to drink, you should try the East Village Craft Cocktail Tour. Highly recommend! I highly recommend Beach City Food Tours. Yesterday, we celebrated my wife's birthday with a private group tour. I had a group of 10, ranging in age from 16-55 and everyone had a great time. Layla, the owner, was very helpful in all stages of planning. Awesome tour. You get to explore the downtown Long Beach area. The tour provides a few locations and its a good variety, it can meet a majority of people's needs and wants. I'm a Long Beach local and discovered some places I wouldn't have gone to up until I did this tour. I took the east village cocktail tour, and let me tell you, it was one of the most interesting and fun experiences I've had. Both Cassidy and Lisa, the tour guides for the night, were super friendly and had loads of information to divulge about the history of buildings, businesses, and drinks. Our guide, and owner of Beach City Food Tours, Layla, was interesting and enthusiastic. We made 8 stops starting with savory offerings from George's Greek Cafe, Pier 76 Fish Grill and Michael's Pizzeria, then on to sweeter offerings. Along the way Layla discussed the history of the restaurants and historic buildings in the area. In between food stops we visited MADE by Millworks which offers a wide assortment of locally made products. I thought the tour was a great value for the money, with seven tastings and substantial portions at each stop. I had a BLAST from start to finish. Layla is charismatic and passionate - not just about food but also about the stories behind the venues you will see on the tour, the surrounding history, and Long Beach itself. She tells you about local art along the walk and the history of the buildings you see. She describes the founding stories of the restaurants and really brings you into the local, bourgeoning food and drink culture! It's so great to support a local businesswoman and the relationships she has built with local business owners. The highlight of the trip for me was a tie between the visit to MADE by Millworks (self described as Airy showroom featuring clothing, jewelry, home decor items & more made by local designers) and the visit to Rainbow Juices juice bar. The best thing, though, is the way that she has the tour scheduled is a perfect crescendo of fullness and buzz (for the alcohol drinkers) with a fresh infusion of juice at the peak which spills into a caffeine, chocolate, sweet and coffee buzz at the end. read more

We took the Downtown Long Beach Walking tour recently with Lisa. We lucked out with having her all to ourselves. Really nice to have a tour focus on foods that locals eat, and get a little history on the restaurant and the area. We had the flaming cheese, smoked taco (really liked this one, as it was unique and not something I've had before), pizza, fresh pressed juice, coffee, vegan donut, and pie "shot". Sadly the chocolate place was not available that day for the tour but we got an extra pie sample to make up for it. Overall, had a nice relaxing time, and a great way to spend a few hours. I was so happy my friends and I decided to take this food tour! First of all, it's a great alternative to going to a basic brunch on the weekend (I love mimosas and food as much as the next person, but I am not a fan of the champagne headache/crankiness that seems to follow it.) Second, you get to try so many different kinds of food and meet other people while doing it. We had a really fun group and really enjoyed getting to meet everyone. I'm not a fan of the term "foodie," however if you identify with this label and love food, then I highly recommend venturing out with Beach City Food Tours. Layla was such a great guide. We were given the itinerary at the beginning of the tour so we were highly aware that we had 6 locations to visit. Bottomline: I did not feel rushed at all. Sometimes I feel rushed when just eating at one single restaurant, but Layla's pacing was really solid and kept me engaged the entire time. There was such a great variety of food on this tour. We had everything from Greek food at George's Greek Cafe, to fresh fish tacos at Pier 76 Fish Grill. Both spots were really delicious, and they were such a great start to our tour. Layla took us over to Ocean Blvd. and shared some of the city's historical facts with the group which were really interesting. Afterwards, we made our way over to Michael's Pizzeria where we had both their signature pizza and homemade pasta dishes. The pasta-as I said, made in house-was served with a Chianina bolognese. Layla informed us that Chianina is an Italian beef that was once served to Roman soldiers during the time of the Roman empire. Michael's Restaurant Group is the only establishment to serve 100% Chianina Beef. It was a real treat. We also had a great taste of Sicilian wine to go with this making the experience even more beautifully executed. The last three spots really hit is home for the tour. We were able to try a large variety of juices at Rainbow Juices, as well as a delicious coffee/tea blend at Recreational Coffee. Recreational Coffee also served us a delicious homemade vegan donut. I'm not a vegan, but the donut was delicious and I could have eaten 13 of them-a baker's dozen, naturally. Layla then showed us over to MADE in Long Beach where we were given the opportunity to see some local Long Beach products. The last stop was the Pie Bar. This solidified the entire experience for me. We were given 2 pie shots-pie in a shot glass, see picture for visuals-that were simply amazing. I fell in love with their key lime pie and have since returned numerous times to indulge in some of their other desserts. All in all, I am so grateful for Layla. For those unfamiliar with downtown Long Beach like myself it's a great opportunity to learn a little bit about the city and try out some delicious food. Layla, the tour guide, did a great job guiding us through the tour and she's very hospitable. It was cool to learn about the background of each stop before we sampled the food. It's nice to have some context about the city you're touring and people who run these local restaurants. Most importantly the food was great! There were 6 stops (3 savory and 3 sweet locations). I have a sweet tooth and I wasn't disappointed. We loved our tour! Layla, our foodie guide and owner of Beach City Food Tours was incredibly knowledgeable about Long Beach's food offerings and history. This was an awesome food tour. Before this, I didn't even know some of these dishes existed. It was a wide variety dishes from Mediterranean to Italian, and even some different juices!!! Our guide Layla was amazing and very much a foodie!. Honestly, when I signed up I thought it was going to be just food. East Village is a very non commercial area with many small bars and restaurants with a unique flair. The price is right and I will bring friends back and also visit the pubs that we went to.
