Loved our stay here, nice and relaxing. We opened our shades and fell asleep with the sound of the ocean waves. Enjoyed the pool and hot tub mostly the beach. Our room was not ocean view however we got lucky to have the room on the corner you can actually view some of the ocean. Its a communal balcony basically a hallway with a small table you can sit out, this was the only thing that bothered me at first. The second night I sat outside and enjoyed the sunset, going to the beach at night was amazing. Complimentary breakfast, mostly breakfast sandwiches I actually enjoyed them coffee, fruit yogurt. Sat outside while having breakfast beautiful view, can't wait to be back for sure an ocean view room. read more

Location on beach is pretty awesome and the staff is really great. Hotel was under renovation during our visit and construction sounds were constant from 9-5. I do think the rates should have been lowered to reflect the construction happening. It's relatively expensive compared to the other options in the area. You're paying to be right on the beach. Walls are pretty thin and you can hear everything going in. But that oceanfront location drowns out most of the noise. Complimentary breakfast was very good. I stayed here for two nights with my family. All of us had a great time. We had an ocean view king bed room. The room was very large, and the bathroom and shower were spacious as well. Our room directly faced the beach, with the balcony directly over the sand. Every employee we interacted with provided excellent service. The guy who checked us in was polite and helpful. The woman working the pool/beach area brought us towels while we were sitting in the hot tub, and brought some sand toys out to beach for our kids to play with. The continental breakfast was very good for a continental breakfast. They offered several types of fruit, cereal, oatmeal, coffee, tea, various types of bread, bagels, and muffins, some pre-made breakfast sandwiches, yogurt, etc. Breakfast is served in a room full of windows overlooking the beach, with an adjacent balcony that also has a beach view. The only small negative is that there was no elevator to get to our room. They have some rooms on the street level, but I had to carry all of our luggage up and down two flights of stairs. So be aware of that. I did see an elevator but I think this only served part of the hotel that we were not in. Overall my whole family loved the Beach Terrace Inn and we would definitely go back. read more

We had a great mini getaway here. My husband and two kids (2 and 4 years old) stayed in room 12 and it's literally on the beach. We could step on the balcony and jump into the sand. The room was spacious, nicely decorated, and clean. We went from the beach to the pool. Thomas the attendant was very nice and accommodating. In the morning there is a continental breakfast which the kids enjoyed. Really nice attendants there too. They didn't mind me filling up 3 bottles of milk for my daughter. Lol. They serve pastries, cereal, oatmeal, toast, bagels, yogurt, coffee, tea, juices, hot chocolate, and probably a few things I'm forgeting, and all in a nice, clearance dining area inside and out, with an amazing view. At night you can hear the waves crashing... I found it relaxing. It's within a short walking distance to tons of eating places. Just loaded the kidsup in the stroller, and it was a stroll to eat, shop, and take in the little beach town. One day we went to LegoLand. LegoLand is about a 10 minute drive. Super close. Kids enjoyed that as well. We needed a target run at some point too. Found one just 10-12 minutes drive away. Overall, it's a great place to beach bum it and eat at yummy places. We stayed at this hotel or our anniversary weekend and we already can't wait to return to the Beach Terrace Inn. The hotel was amazing, right on the beach, perfect location! It was very clean and the rooms were of excellent standard, they did a fabulous job on the remodel. It is walking distance to the Village (restaurants and shops). The staff is very friendly and they really went above and beyond our expectations to make us feel comfortable. The hotel offers a complimentary (this should be verified as we may of gotten this based on type of room reservation) continental breakfast which was very good and it's located in a private dining area that overlooks the ocean on 2nd floor of building. What do they say about real estate....LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Located right on the sand, Beach Terrace Inn's location cannot be beat. I highly recommend paying a little extra for the balcony view. Sitting out on the balcony to watch the sunset was worth every penny! The rooms themselves were larger than most 3 star hotels I've stayed at, including a very large bathroom and shower. They have a continental breakfast in the morning (7am - 11am). What a tease a one-night stay is at the BTI...... Fortunately and/or unfortunately, I stayed here just one night. I loved it, but it really was like a sad/mean joke to have to pack up and leave the very next day. My traveling companion and I checked in after the standard 3pm check-in time and were greeted by a friendly employee in the small but chic lobby area. Very pleasant (clean) vibe going on so far. so good! We made our way to our room (ocean front pool view king) which was huge, clean, contemporary and had an amazing, open view of both the beach / ocean front as well as the triangular pool and hot tub. They do have a straight up ocean view rooms, which are in a separate building, avoiding the pool area, but those were a tad more $$ so we stuck with this one - and we were both very happy with it. The room had its own private balcony with two sitting chairs and a little table - perfect setup for sunset or sunrise (yeah right....) watching. The bathroom was large and updated with sleek looking decor, dark countertops, and a roomy open shower. Dare I say, it was a sexy bathroom. We left our windows open at night so we could hear the ocean waves all night long. It almost got to be too loud at points (for me, anyway), but still was wonderful to us midwesterners. [ My only complaint about the room was the huge pillows. I'm a pillow snob, and these suckers were massive and all pretty much the same size. ] In the morning, we enjoyed the comp breakfast (bagels, pastries, hard boiled eggs, juice, coffee, fresh fruit, cereal, etc.) and then strolled along the beach. We didn't have time to swim in the pool, but we did sit out on the pool patio for a while, enjoying the ocean breeze and sunshine. We also spotted several dolphins and even a whale! Bonus! Ah... Check out the pictures of what the property used to look like and you will understand the remodel 4 years ago which completely transformed this former 70s property to this unique 48 room hotel. Hence, the original layout with refurbished rooms. We stayed here to celebrate our 10 year anniversary and had wine, baguettes, cheese, and snacks in a cute wicker basket ready for a beachside picnic ready for us in the room. We had reservations at Addison at the Grand Del Mar, but we were able to enjoy this wonderful surprise the next day on the patio. These are the top 10 memorable, unique, and beautiful aspects of the BTI: 1. Great Room for Breakfast with yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, pastries, and beverages were perfect. 2. Proximity to walk to Carlsbad Village, shops, bike rentals, surf, sand, water, etc. 3. Two beachside parking lots !!!!! 4. Huge rooms with large bathrooms. 5. Shower pressure 6. Sliding shutters doors to the patio 7. Organic beach decor with sea glass, shells, rope, natural textures, and natural lighting to enhance the property 8. Dorothy, so sweet at breakfast walked me through the unique history of the hotel and shared how her son got married on the lawn across the street. She made it feel like a B n B. 9. People are beachy down to earth here. You see the sand toys outside the rooms, as it should. Little hooks to hang the wet items on the patio or outside your room. Great details in design. 10. Room - standard King room w/partial ocean view room 42. When I booked the room & called about how much I could see the ocean I didn't think it would be this much! It's practically an ocean front room you just can't see the sand. It was to die for!The room was insanely nice. The bed was extremely comfy, the room was huge, & the shower was magnificent! It had a nice big couch with 2 other chairs to lounge on in the room as well as a desk area. We had a balcony with two chairs and a mini table so we were able to watch the sunset every day without going down to the beach. Even without keeping the balcony door open, we could hear the waves crashing at night which was extremely peaceful. The bathroom was one of my favorite parts! The shower was HUGE and everything in the bathroom was so nice and elegant. The shower comes equip with conditioner, shampoo, & body wash in a dispenser! None of that tiny bottle stuff at other hotels. And bath robes, super cool! The toilet had its own separate are w/a door which was nice too. The room had a sink & a refrigerator the only thing is I wish it had a microwave. Other than that I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this room! Parking - The parking could be better but there's not that many people staying at the inn so you'll always have a parking spot. There's an additional "garage" area behind the first one, Don't be fooled like we were & thought we had no where to park! Area- the beach is the reason why people come but the little town of Carlsbad is really nice! Restaurants & shops are walking distance from the inn which is always a plus! There's no "name" brand restaurants it's all local restaurants & fast food places but they were really good! It felt very safe too so most of the time we walked around at 10 or 11 at night. If you wanted regular fast food names that you're comfortable with, Oceanside has it all & it's about a 10-15 min drive. But we preferred to stay local! The hotel rents out boogie boards, beach chairs, toys, and towels for free which was really nice! Right down the street there's a little shop that rents surf boards & bikes for good prices as well. Staff- the two ladies at the front desk were very nice & friendly, very welcoming! I even forgot a bag in the room when I checked out and they were kind enough to mail it to me for free since I live about an hour & a half away. Fantastic location, rooms are clean, bright and big. Breakfast is cereal and stale bread, but it's included in the hefty price. Face it, you pay for that ocean view and sea breeze, unfortunately the breeze come with a constant smell of cigarette smoke. The hotel is supposed to be smoke free, but no enforcement or care. the staff is non existent, No security. It is basically a beautiful Motel on the beach. The rooms are great, if you pay for the ocean view or oceanfront-here, the view and the oceanfront location are amazing. Don't get a room that isn't an ocean view or you'll be in the dark (facing the inside hallways). The breakfast is store bought stuff, but still nice, with fruits, pastries, etc. My husband and I travel down to southern California from San Francisco on weekend trips often, we stayed here once, and really liked the location. I ended booking another two trips there, but had to cancel because our plans changed. We called a week in advance to cancel, but never received the cancelation confirmation code (supposed to be sent via email) so they ended up charing us $500! I couldn't believe it. Stayed one night last July. I had requested a view room and one in a quiet location. Only room left? The one right next to a constantly slamming gate leading to the pool. No way. So I upgraded to a full ocean view. Interesting room. Huge...really too big almost. It was nice but tooo dark. Of course the view was great, but for $425 I would hope so, considering the hotel offers no services whatsoever. It really is a 3 star joint at best. The receptionist at the front desk was this rather strange fellow who was anything but friendly. I just can't think of anything I liked abt this place but the view. The town was boring and dead. I won't be back. I would have been ok paying what this room was actually worth....not a cent more than $250.00. read more

A few of us girls decided to head to the beach for a 24 hour getaway. This was a perfect spot cause it was on the beach with a view and we didn't mind splurging for one night ($650 room). I was told when I booked that they were going to be having their grand opening after some renovations on our check in day. I confirmed the facilities would be available for us, explaining we were coming for only one day. I even confirmed the beach/beach valet would be available as that amenity was a selling point. Got there at 11am, not expecting to get our room, but to be able to use beach/pool/bathroom. Construction was still there painting, sweeping, moving furniture around etc. we were told we couldn't use ANY of the facility, even the umbrellas/chairs that were already set up on the beach for their "guests". They said they'd call when we could. We walked through the village and kept busy (even tho our plan was to lay out and relax at hotel). At 3pm we walked back and they said we could check in (no call). Let them know my concern and was basically told we were lucky we could have access to the property before 4pm as they don't guarantee access for their guests till 4pm which was check in time. Mind blown. I called Monday and spoke to an "office manager" who was unapologetic but said he would check with his manager to see if there was anything they could do to compensate us back for the loss of services/access we were told we would have. No call back. Called Wednesday to follow up and was told he stepped out but he'd call me back in 15 minutes. No call. Called again Friday, no return call. NO concern about the customer or consideration. If you want to be here between 4pm-11am, it's a nice spot. If you plan to actually enjoy the facilities day of check in or be heard when there's an issue/concern, look elsewhere. Really disappointing, especially considering the cost. We got married in Vista and decided to have the after party in Oceanside and stayed here for the wedding night. My wife stayed here the previous night and the day of the wedding. It was very spacious and had more than enough room for her, her sister, her mom and a friend to do their hair and makeup. The bathroom was very nicely appointed and clean. The bed was large and comfortable. Everything was very clean and the balcony had a nice view of the ocean. The continental breakfast in the morning was your standard spread of pastries, fruits, juices, etc. The only tiny disappointment was the lack of a waffle maker at the continental breakfast. I'm a sucker for waffles! We actually forgot a steamer thing in the room she used on her dress when we checked out. They were extremely nice and held on to it until we were able to pick it up a few days later. Will definitely be coming back, maybe for an anniversary or two! read more

Not a great experience. For over $500 a night I would've hoped for better quality. The property is under a 2 phase renovation and when booking you have no way of knowing if you are booked with the renovated side of the property or the old side. Our "ocean view" was the entire top of the roof of the building in front of us, which was absolutely hideous to look out at. Lighting in the bathroom makes you feel like you're in prison. There was also a maintenance closet right out side the bathroom window which constantly had people going in and out of, which made you feel pretty uncomfortable taking a shower or even changing in your bathroom. Internet was out the night we checked in and was told to "go find an internet cafe if we needed wifi". Also the air conditioning wasn't working first night. No one showed up that night or next day when I had to call again to remind them, then still didn't get it fixed till late in the afternoon the next day. I was told there was no room cleaning, if we need linens we have to find a plastic bag to put the old ones in and set them outside the door and wait till we get new ones? What a nightmare. I also asked for more towels and never received any. So over $500 a night for no clean linens and the same 4 towels. Also, the roughest towels I have ever used, felt like sand paper. Toilet stopped working on the second day, called down to the office and was told 5 minutes for someone to be up. 1 hour later the "POOL BOY" came up to look at our toilet and said "Sorry I am the pool boy, the maintenance guy is on another property, I will let him know you need him". So, the office sent the pool boy for our maintenance request. For breakfast you leave a card on your door and they collect your menu order and bring the next morning. When our breakfast didn't show up next morning the lady in the office said "you must've not filled it out correctly". BTW the breakfast was not worth the trouble, so skip it. So disappointed and could've spent less on a lot nicer places we have stayed at before but considered splurging and trying something new in the area. read more

Don't stay here! The hotel is overpriced and the management is extremely rude! We checked in about 12:30pm to use the pool and go down to the beach. This is a beach front hotel with stairs down to the beach for access. The front desk took our luggage for storage and charged my credit card $756.00 for the one night pool cabana room and resort fees. We were then told we could not enter the property at all or use the facilities including the pool until the room was ready at 4:00pm due to insurance reasons. Even after they just charged my credit card for the stay and resort fees? We were also told If we wanted to go down to the beach we needed to walk down the street to the public beach entry and we were not allowed to use the hotel chairs or beach towels. We have stayed in all types of hotels and resorts around the world and this was a first. We have never been treated with such disrespect and felt so unwelcome. There is no hospitality at this hotel. There are way to many stairs to carry luggage and the hotel is aged and walls are not insulated so you will be up all night hearing kids running around. To top off our stay we were awakened by a fire alarm. Please avoid this hotel! read more

If you are visiting San Diego, or even a local...you need to stay a night at this place! Literally ON THE BEACH, the pool, deck and jacuzzi sit right on the sand (but have a nice glass fence to keep the flying beach balls and sand off you, if you so desire). This is one of the few beach hotels down this stretch that is fairly new and or updated. The room I was in felt new and not run down. I noticed that the amenities like the beach side shower and such were clean and shinny and not rusted over like many of the fixtures that are this close to the waves. I was a bit reluctant to write this review simply because I am selfish and didn't want to reveal what is probably San Diego County's best kept secret. Believe it or not, this inn-on-the-sea was owned and operated by the Best Western chain for many years. In fact, it was only recently that the property was sold and renovated into a boutique hotel. I still have to wonder how a low-budget motel chain was able to get their hands on such a prime piece of coastal real estate in the first place... ...but I digress. Anyways, the selling point of this hotel is its location right on the beach. All you have to do is walk down a couple flights of stairs, open a gate at the rear of the property, and voila, you'll be standing on one of the most pristine sections of the Southern California coast. The shops and restaurants in Carlsbad Village are only a block or two away. The property consists of three buildings: ocean front, ocean view and poolside. Over the years, my family and I have had the chance to stay in all three. I would absolutely recommend staying in the ocean front building; it's a bit of a trek from the parking lot across the street, but your balcony will open up right on the water and will offer impressive views of the Pacific Ocean. During my most recent stay (in 2008) the hotel was in the middle of being renovated, so I can't really comment on the condition of the rooms. What I do remember is that the staff was exceptional and made sure that every guest was enjoying their stay. This hotel deserves 5 stars for its unrivaled location, attentive staff, and lots of fond memories over the years. read more

We went here for our 10-year anniversary for the weekend. This was our first weekend away from our kids. We've never gotten to do a hotel stay, so this was a huge treat for us. I'm so glad we finally got to do it and so happy we went to Beach Terrace Inn! On our bed, they left us an anniversary note with some tasty chocolates and swans made out of towels. It was such a sweet gesture and so personable. We truly feel like they value their guests. We absolutely loved our stay at Beach Terrace Inn! This hotel location is unbeatable (walking distance to all the shopping and restaurants), has its own parking, has amazing views, it's literally right on the beach (exactly what I wanted!), and the king bed room is very big. We were surprised at the size of the room, bathroom, and a huge shower. It was so relaxing and wonderful to hear the waves when we had our door open. The view from the our balcony was breathtaking. The staff is amazing and so helpful. The desk clerk Cassandra is so sweet and accommodating. If you want to stay at a hotel right on a great beach, with amazing views, walking distance to all the restaurants and shopping, with its own parking, complimentary breakfast, big rooms with awesome views, and a great staff...then this place is an absolute must for the best, relaxing stay at the beach money can buy! There's nothing worse than reading those reviews that are filled with useless, redundant information... like this entire sentence. For that reason, I'll keep it simple and to the point: The Beach Terrace Inn is absolutely fantastic. We had our wedding on the stretch of beach behind the property (9/22/13), and hosted our reception inside their amazing Lounge and Patio Terrace. The facilities were a nice mix of modern and beachy (not to mention well maintained), and the ocean views were some of the best I've seen in this area. The staff was pleasant and easy to work with, including Constance, who helped us plan what turned out to be a really amazing wedding. We had several guests who stayed at the hotel, and they had nothing but great things to say about their experience. My wife and I stayed for one night (after the wedding), and were highly impressed with the room, how comfortable the bed was, and the incredible ocean views from the patio. Overall, this was a really great experience, and I would highly recommend the hotel not just for the location (you can get ocean views in a lot of places), but for the cleanliness, staff, and most importantly for my wife, how comfortable the bed was. :) read more

They have beach equipment and all you have to do is step off the deck and you are on the beach. My wife and I had an amazing time at Beach Terrace. We showed up to the Inn a little earlier than we expected. Our room wasn't available yet, but they gave us keys to the pool and near-completely-private beach. Once we were able to get into our room, my newly-wed wife and I found an awesomely romantic and relaxing honeymoon experience waiting for us. Our room overlooked the private pool and beach. It had deck that we could sit out on and stare at the waves. The room had a very comfortable bed and perfect bathrooms. Wifi: I had zero troubles. AC: I had air conditioning. It was awesome. Staff: I had zero complaints about the staff. The only thing was they said they would call me when my room was done and they didn't. But that wasn't enough to drop an entire star. Breakfast: free breakfast with exactly what you want and expect. But no terrible eggs or fake meat. Who wants that anyways? Cereal, bread, juices, and perfectly adequate coffee. read more

the renovated rooms are nice. the beach chair setup is very nice. however my stay fell short when it came to the coffee maker in the room not working properly, the TV not working properly and followed the instructions to put the breakfast request out before 9P on the door so had it out at 730p at 8a the next morning it was still there. called the front desk they said we'll pick it up. by 1015 still not picked up and no breakfast. and the light breakfast is done in lobby by 9am so didn't get that either. now i get to be hangry until i check out and go somewhere to eat. read more

I love the vibe of the city of Carlsbad. for a beach community, its pretty quiet and calm without all of the noise and hoopla that you find in all of the other beach towns nearby. I was a little worried when we first checked in. My wife had found this place through a Groupon and had booked a king bedroom with a partial view as a nice overnight getaway for my birthday. We showed up and the receptionist told us that we were assigned a room with two full size beds. I don't think i should have to say this but there is nothing romantic about sleeping in two different beds, of trying to squeeze into one full size bed. We asked for available upgrades and they offered us a single King room with a full ocean view that overlooked the pool for an additional $60. We agreed to that, even though we thought that this should be comped, but we got our room keys and took off for our room. When we got to the room we were so surprised! The room was huge! it was clearly recently remodeled and was beautiful. The bathrooms was huge with upgraded fixtures and shower. The bed was big and comfy and everything was really clean. The windows and slider door to big balcony let in a ton of natural light, as well as an amazing view of the ocean! My wife and I took advantage of the direct beach access near the pool deck and walked around the beach for a while. After dinner we returned to the pool deck to enjoy the sunset from a comfy covered cabana-esque lounger on the pool deck. It was really nice. One of the other highlights was when we went to check out we were told that the upgrade fee wouldn't be charged. That made us so happy that we didn't settle for the Groupon two double bed room. I'm glad we had a chance to stay with here and we are looking forward to coming back again soon! read more

We stayed at The Beach Terrace in during June 2010 for 3 days. Our room was nicely decorated (the bed was a bit hard) and the amenities are nice. The shower is large but I really would have enjoyed a bathtub. We got a king room with an Ocean view and it was everything we wanted. The balcony area is wonderful for napping on while listening to the ocean. They have dedicated parking. It was a VERY short walk to the beach. We had some challenges with the room next to us being so loud. Would love to go back!! read more

One of the best locations in Carlsbad and on the SoCal coast. Right on the beach with a chill, no hassle vibe with highly attentive staff when you need them. Huge rooms and bathrooms in the King bed rooms that can comfortably accommodate couples and families alike. It's an older Inn, so it has its expected wear, but it's aging well and clearly well cared for. Add-on parking option across the street is super convenient and the walkable proximity to Carlsbad town can't be beat. read more

GREAT location!! I stayed here over the weekend with my now husband for our wedding weekend. We stayed in room 20. The view was perfect, and leaving the sliding door open to hear the sound of the waves was so peaceful! The bathroom was nice with great water pressure in the shower. I wish we had more time to spend at the hotel to check out the pool and the beach. My only complaint is the lack of service. If you are going there to "get away" then this wont be a problem haha, you can also connect to the Wifi but sometimes it drops you and you have to reconnect! I would love to come here for a staycation once the vacation season and vacation prices go down! read more
