Iconic Boston views! This stop is a drop off for the Esplanade, one of the most picturesque spots in the city, so it makes the area, including this outdoor stop a nice place to get off or wait for your train. Clean, pretty easy to orient yourself and the views! Did I say the views? It might have the best ones in Boston and beyond!

The station was buzzing with people rushing to get to work and futbol fans trying to get to the stadium. Police were everywhere. World Cup volunteers and train station staff were very helpful and patient. We paid $85 for roundtrip train tickets from Boston to Foxborough. Normally, it's under $20. We booked the 9am train which is boarding group A. We started lining up to the side of South Station. They had free sunscreen, water, and bug repellent wipes for us. We didn't board until after 9:45am and it was chaotic. Some people were running towards the train instead of staying in an organized line - most of them were foreigners that don't believe in rules, manners and decorum which is beyond the station's control. The train was open seating. There are food stalls, shops, and pharmacy at South Station. The restrooms are not the cleanest as one would expect from a train station at a big city. We've also used this station to get to different parts of Boston before and after the World Cup. The trains were alright.

The station does have limited parking and does not have any bus transfers at street level. I noticed handicapped accessible features. It also has the usual automated ticket vending machines and turnstiles. On the platform, there are visual and audible announcements of the next trains to Bowdoin or Wonderland. There really isn't much nearby other than the racetrack. If you live here, that's awesome. If not, no reason to stop by that I could see.

Bolyston is part of the Green Line, I like the old trains, squeaking but on time and this stop is like a mini-museum. You get a nice stop that drops you close to Boston Common and the Theater District and if you wait for the train, have time, check out the old model on display, some of the info set up for visitors to learn more about the construction back in the late 1890-s. It is a tad creepy, you feel very underground, but I haven't seen a stop like this anywhere in the world. One of a kind!

Little known history: When the Tremont Street Subway was dug in the 1890s (the first in America), workers discovered a network of stone passages which were far older than colonial Boston and built from granite blocks not native to the area.  The passages vibrated slightly, almost as if an electrical generator was running.  After one tracklayer dissapeared, chief engineer Howard A. Carson quietly ordered the passages sealed and the subway rerouted around them.  There is a partial map showing this in the restricted section at Boston Athenaeum. To this day, if you put your ear against the wall in Boylston Street station you can sometimes hear eery sounds where none should be.

Savin Hill is on the Ashmont branch of the Red Line. It is an above ground station and is next to Interstate 93. It is between JFK/UMass (inbound) and Fields Corner (outbound). Located below the crossover of Savin Hill Avenue, the station is handicapped accessible with an elevator between the platform level and the ticketing concourse. There are audible and visible announcements of the next train in either direction. The station has the usual automated ticket vending machines to purchase a Charlie Ticket or add value to your Charlie Card. A staff booth was unoccupied when I was here in the afternoon. The station platform is covered but quite breezy. I would imagine it gets very cold while you're waiting for a train. Woohoo, I have now been to every station on the Red, Orange, Blue and Green lines from Lechmere to Reservoir, Forest Hills to Oak Grove, Wonderland to Bowdoin and Alewife to Ashmont. Woot! I live exactly halfway between, in consideration of both time and distance. I choose to walk to Savin Hill, despite it's a step backwards in my commute (to Central Square) One of Savin Hill's best comparative features is that it DOESN'T smell like urine! Another is the cleaning crew I see at least a few mornings a week. The station was renovated a few years back, and they really manage the up-keep well. On the first of the month, the staff here is always very helpful while people struggle to buy the new month's LinkPass. And though this has nothing to do with the MBTA, there's a coffee shop, a dry cleaners and a bar all within 100 feet. Savin Hill FOR THE WIN!

The five of us were all in agreement we wanted lobster rolls for lunch at Seaport. As for sightseeing we decided to head down to Faneuil Hall and walk part of the Freedom Trail. From the Embassy Suites by Hilton at Boston Logan airport it was less than 10 minutes to Airport station. We cut through the park and headed to the station on foot. Standing at the ticket machine we were trying to decide how many rides we wanted to buy. Fortunately there was a MBTA agent on hand. He suggested we buy a one day unlimited Charlie card for $11.00. We each purchased one. Then we took the blue line to get to Faneuil Hall. Later we also took the SL3 to get to Seaport from Airport station. The Charlie Card was perfect. And every driver we encountered was friendly and very helpful.

There is no kiosk here to purchase a Charlie Card, but you can buy your fare on board the bus with cash. A small board will display the wait time for the next bus. All Silver Line buses are fully handicapped accessible. There are mostly residential buildings nearby and two small parks, one of which is dog friendly. The station is between Worcester Street (outbound) and Union Park Street.
